Anybody else remember FatWhitey? Everett? Weird fella, occasionally a little sensitive, but looking back on our conversations he came across a nice enough guy whose heart was in the right place even if his social skills weren't quite up to the challenge.

The last thing he did before he dropped off the map was he mailed me a "spare copy" of Oblivion Collector's Edition he had. This was, I think, two or three years ago. I think that was his way of thanking me for mailing him a copy of the "Smashing... Live!" CD that came with a copy of Nintendo Official Magazine UK back in 2003/2004.

He's been banned from Facebook at least three times, though. Makes one wonder exactly what he was doing to elicit that kind of response from the Facebook admins.

I think I do. If I remember rightly, and I'm remembering the right person, either before W3D or W4, he also spent a lot of time in whichever IRC channel it was.

Must've been quite a long time ago as I can't find any chatlogs or remember it iin any detail.

Yeah I remember him, interesting guy, we always chatted whenever he got on and even played SSBB at some point. I haven't seen him in years now.

He was a bit socially-awkward though, got kinda creepy sometimes and I know that got on the wrong side of a lot of people (even here) so he changed accounts a lot so he could exclude himself from OD and MSN and what not. That's probably what got him banned from Facebook so much too.

MtlAngelus

Yeah, he used to talk to me fairly frequently. I talked back sometimes. :p... I pretty much agree with the assessment that he was a good guy, but sometimes I had a hard time talking to him because he was really awkward pretty much all the time.

It's possible to get banned from Facebook? ...I want to know more, too.

On the external drive now,
e:\Audiobooks < 40.4GB
e:\ISOs < 4.22GB // Pretty much just WA and AoE2 for the CD music (no drive)
e:\My Videos\Films\ < 218GB
e:\My Videos\TV Shows\ < 902GB
e:\Unsorted Rips\ < 186GB // This is mostly old films or TV shows where I have to manually join and split the videos to get one episode per file. Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) was the worst.

I like 3D films. Not every film needs it, but when used apropriately it's a nice effect that really adds to immersion.

Unfortunately most of the time it's going to be stuff COMING RIGHT AT YOUR FACE. Not to mention non-sterioscopic films remastered awkwardly to be in 3D. Episode I in 3d? Really George lucas?

Also if I hadn't seen Avatar in 3D I might have had to pay attention to the story.:p

I've only seen Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland in 3D.
That is, in "Real3D".

It basically felt like one of those flip-open diorama books.
A regular 2D movie was simply rendered on 3 planes, which gave the impression of cut out cardboard figures being moved around.
Only CGI animations looked believably good.

I guess a properly done 3D movie, i.e. IMAX, with professional shutter glasses (instead of polarized ones) could look good.
Not that most movies would need it anyway.

I really would like to be able to afford a good 3D system for computer gaming though...

Yeah Alice in wonderland was notorious for it's shoddy, added as an after-thought 3D!

Tron Legacy, now that was a nice looking 3D film.

Best 3D effect I've experienced was with nvidia glasses back when you had to use a crt monitor. Tried them out with Rome: Total War and Battlefield Vietnam, both were just released I think. I could consider getting a 3D capable monitor now for gaming, but movies feel pointless. There's just not the same need to feel like being in the same room in a film as with a game.

Killing Floor has updated with new weapons for what I'm pretty sure is the second time ever, and I'm thrilled. Really is a Christmas update for me; it's almost scary how much this weapon pack is almost exactly what I would have designed. It's all the stuff I never knew I always wanted in KF!

For Medic: MP5M, haven't tried it yet but historically speaking I love me some MP5
For Support: Combat Shotgun, a non-hunting-shotgun middle ground between the starter pump-action and AA12
For Commando: M4, same-cost alternative to the AK with less power but considerably greater stability
For Sharpshooter: .44 magnum (hell yes) - can be dual wielded, is exceptionally powerful at a cost of low ammo capacity and long reloads
For Berzerker: Claymore sword, very slow swing but unmatched power
For Firebug: Husk's arm cannon. Chargable! Results in a pretty significant blast.
For Demolitions: M4 203 -- M4 with attached grenade launcher. Not scoped, so I think it's intended more like an M79 that also shoots bullets than it is an assault rifle that also shoots grenades.

I really appreciate KF's business model. The awesome new content feels like a "thanks for playing," and the character skin packs are there for purchase if you want to show monetary support. Speaking of, there's a new steampunk one, if that's your thing.

bonz

It's an old toshiba, around six years old with integrated intel graphics. I don't have it with me at the moment, so I can't check right now. I think it does have 128Mb Video memory, but I'm not sure if it supports shader model 1.1.

SargeMcCluck
22 Dec 2011, 22:36
My laptop lags somewhat with Worms Reloaded on levels with 3D backgrounds, but is fine without. Terraria runs super-smooth.

WR demands a slightly slower processor (1.25 instead of 1.6) but demands twice as much RAM, and a similar graphics card.

Next time you're at the laptop check the details or give me the laptop's model number and I'll check for you, I was hoping you'd want it so I could return the favour for W:UR. It's very likely it'll run it though, some people with 8 year old PCs are running it. The new patch added lots of fancy new graphics features but they can all be toggled off.

I usually try to avoid treating this forum like tech suport, but this is the dumbest problem ever and google has been no help!

Here's the thing, I've got a Mictrosoft lifechat LX-3000 USB headset, but windows Vista has identified it as speakers. This results in the highest possible volume being barely audible (stronger signals would presumably blow out a pair of powered speakers) and the headset is basically useless. Reinstalling the drivers didn't help.

I tried them on my laptop, and they worked fine for ~half an hour before suddenly developing identical isssues.

Did you try installing the drivers from the CD that came with it before plugging it in? Even those might be outdated, though, so I guess give these a try, but first make sure you're uninstalling the device from the system completely:

I usually try to avoid treating this forum like tech suport, but this is the dumbest problem ever and google has been no help!

Here's the thing, I've got a Mictrosoft lifechat LX-3000 USB headset, but windows Vista has identified it as speakers. This results in the highest possible volume being barely audible (stronger signals would presumably blow out a pair of powered speakers) and the headset is basically useless. Reinstalling the drivers didn't help.

I tried them on my laptop, and they worked fine for ~half an hour before suddenly developing identical isssues.

Is there any way to force windows to recognise them as headphones?

The fact that the stupid things are manufactured by Microsoft just makes it even more agrivating. There's even a button that starts up MSN, handilly positioned just beneath the mic mute button.:p
What do you mean they're detected as "speakers"? Windows Vista/7 shows any sound device as "speakers" in the Sound panel if they only have one output, regardless of what the device physically is, so that isn't the problem. The only time you will see something as "headphones" there is if you have a soundcard with different jacks for speakers/headphones or something.

Does the device have the correct name in the Device Manager? If yes, then either the headset or the drivers are s***. If the issue wasn't present from the start, then probably something broke like a damaged wire (these mess up easier than you'd think), jack or channel that's messing up the volume output. Or if you think it's the drivers you can take it up with Microsoft.

Naturally, it didn't come with a CD and I've already re-installed the driver (after uninstalling from the device menu).

My soundcard does indeed label things correctly, and headphones get a completely different configuration menu. 2 in fact, one through my soundcard's software and another through the regular windows audio manager.

I can't believe this is how it's actually suposed to work! the settings or my Microsoft branded headset shouldn't ask me where the speakers are positioned on my desk. Arrg Vista is so ****ing dumb.

The device manager has the correct name, and the drivers are freshly re-installed so you might be right about the wires being buggered. :(

Getting easier to draw parallels between the business models of Spiral Knights and TF2, I guess. First, randomly awarded lockboxes which have to be unlocked with expensive keys to win a random accessory which are sought after on varying levels. Now, in-game bonus items for purchasing other games.

To be fair, though, the latter is for another Sega game, and it's badass as hell (http://www.spiralknights.com/), and can also be gotten by purchasing a noticeably more expensive energy pack. And also Spiral Knights is still updating in order to make itself better, and doing a good job of it, instead of stacking hats and buggy overpowered weapons and every other imaginable type of bull**** on top of itself in a further effort to dance the game's bloated purple corpse on puppet wires to wring more money out of the squealing masses.

I was going to link screenshots of myself wearing the suit, but Steam seems to be rather crunked at the moment.

Unrelated: I'm very disappointed that my machine can't seem to keep up with Dustforce. It seems incredibly up my alley.

So. I have to do a project for uni in a group. It has to involve hardware and software. Our project is a GPS tracker for a bicycle. My thoughts are that making one small enough to fit into the bike frame would be very expensive, and the metal of the frame would block the GPS signal anyway. Solution: buy a large bike light, strip out the insides and put a GPS device in (along with a few LEDs).

We've not got much electronic experience, so building all the chips from scratch is I think not an option. I'm thinking of using an Arduino with a GPS shield.

We need to be able to transfer data too, of course. My thoughts are to get a GSM shield for the Arduino and send/receive data via SMS. This also adds the benefit of GSM tracking if GPS fails to lock on.

My only worries are battery life, size (although a complete Arduino chip with the shields shouldn't be much bigger than a matchbox), and managing to mount everything (especially the GPS module) in the bike light safely. Anyone here have any ideas or suggestions?

Why not using an external GPS antenna?

As for battery power, how about using a self-winding rotor coupled with an electric generator, like the ones used in automatic watches?
Maybe you could also utilize the pedal's cranks to fit a generator.
Or maybe even convert a wheel hub motor into one.

SargeMcCluck
2 Feb 2012, 13:23
Problem is we've got a very small budget, and those things are all things I've looked at but would be out of our price range (and time constraints).

There isn't a huge need for a GPS antenna though - an internal one in a bike light would be fine (a thin layer of plastic doesn't ruin GPS). It's the battery that's the problem. I mean, we could run it on a 9V battery, but it'd die in a matter of hours, if not less.

Mmm. I suppose the smart thing to do is to ignore the battery problem for now, get it working and check what the power drain is, and determine the battery based on that. If we have to go over budget we'll have to, but that'll come out of our pockets.

Would Bluetooth be a better alternative to GSM?

I've got an external bluetooth GPS receiver to track flights when I go flying. That way I can tether it to my iPhone and not slaughter the battery by using the phone's onboard GPS chip. The bluetooth deeley lasts about 10hrs off its own battery.

SargeMcCluck

Wouldn't work though - bluetooth's range is far too limited. You'd pretty much have to be able to see the bike to lock on.

Does it have to be able to fit on any bike, or could you put it all in a reasonably large box and mount that on a carrier rack on the back of a bike?

If you really need it small you might be able to use a bare AVR rather than one in an arduino and use that to talk to the GSM shield. Have you got budget to produce your own PCBs?

What range do you need to be able to track it? There are other wireless solutions (don't know much about 'em mind) that might be simpler to interface with than GSM.

From the actual-solving-the-problem point of view: cheap android phone + app? I presume that would rather defeat the object of your project though.

I think the purpose of this is an anti-theft device, hidden in the bike, which is able to get the location of the stolen bike via GPS and transmit it to you via GSM, wherever there is coverage.
A big box mounted on the bike is the first thing that a thief would break open. :)

I've seen tests of such commercial devices (hidden in the bike's frame) on TV and it seemed to work very good, but of course, they never mentioned the battery issue.

IMO, the only solution to have maintenance-free, fit-and-forget device that is hidden in the bike and always operational is to have an independent power supply.

A battery couple with solar panel comes to my mind, but that would also look suspicious on a bike, if not done properly. Maybe a small wind turbine, but that has the same problem on a bike as a solar panel.

See if you can find a used wheel hub motor (or the whole wheel assembly) from a cheap/broken electric bike somewhere.
Here in Austria you can buy such bikes at supermarkets nowadays, for a few hundred Euros. There are also retrofitting kits available.
Try looking in the small ads or at a scrapyard!

Here are hub motors for $89:

Bonz is quite right. It's supposed allow the owner to find their bike if it's been stolen, hence needing to "hide" it (and why I like the idea of hiding it in a light - everyone has a light on their bike!)

Obviously this means we need to be able to communicate from anywhere - I can't think of anything other than SMS/GSM other than say, 3G, which would be far too much work, too power intensive and too expensive.

It's just supposed to be a prototype - it can obviously be rough around the edges and have problems (especially ones caused by the budget).

Having it be maintenance free would be the aim of a real solution, but I'm not sure if we'd manage in time. I'm currently just thinking we should get as large a capacity LiIon battery as we could fit into a bike light (I'm thinking one like the image below - that's a lot of space, and a few LEDs at the top would enable it to still be a light, albeit a poor one).

Solar'd be great, but yeah, very obvious (and too easily damaged, bikes get knocked over all the time).

Our entire budget is roughly €100, and just the various components for GPS tracking and communication would take up most of that, cannibalizing an electric bike is out of our league. :<

We could make our own PCBs if we wished, definitely. However, we can get an Arduino very cheap, and I can get an entire GPS system that is designed to work with an Arduino for less than €25. The expensive part, and the one we should maybe think about making, is the GRSM bit. There's a perfect one that would hook into our Arduino (and make the dimensions of the complete thing about 70x55x35mm, GPS, Arduino and all), but it's about €70. Ugh.

I've myself thought about just buying a cheap android phone, yeah, but it would be cheating. :<

The main problem I have is that we're a group of people (7 in all - four are studying various business/economy degrees, and the other 3, myself included, are doing comp.sci and/or electronics), but they're all incompetent. None of them have ever done any work with electronics apart from just sticking wires into places following tutorials (no soldering or anything), none of them have ever done any android programming, and they don't seem to have any good ideas, which means I'm going to end up having to do everything. Which is fine in a way, excluding the budget & power problems this will be easy, but I'm not allowed to do everything, so I'm going to have to tell them what to do.

I know! I'll make them do all of the UML diagrams for my code. I hate UML. Excellent!

Vibration-powered generator thing comes to mind as a possibility, specially for a bicycle. Suspect it might not have the power to drive much, but if the entire device was in an extremely low power stand-by most of the time, and turned on every few hours to send a text it might work. Hmm, ugly, large lights like these might be a perfect anti-theft device by themselves. :D

IMO, nowadays tiny, detachable LED lights seem to be the trend, as they can be removed to not get stolen, more so for popular mountainbikes and similar.
Lights like these you would only find on grandmother bikes, that also have a shopping basket attached.

If a thief finds these on a trendy mountain bike, he'll most likely rip them of and throw away.
(And steal tiny, detachable ones from another bike.)

(Sorry if you did make it a bootable drive, just going by your wording it doesn't sound like it)

Alternatively, remove the drive and put it into another laptop that does have a CD drive to do the repair on?

Yeah, tiny lights are the trend, but again, this is just a prototype. I mean, as we've already said, it'd be cheaper and easier to buy a tiny smartphone and just store it on the bike than to do this. We just need some way to get it working, and I can't think of anything you can attach to a bike that isn't obvious except for a light - and storing it all inside the bike really isn't an option because the metal frame will ruin the GPS.

Those battery-generator things would be great. Hah.

I made a level called YOU WIN and the description was YOU WIN YOU WIN YOU WIN YOU WIN YOU WIN YOU WIN YOU WIN YOU WIN YOU WIN YOU WIN and it was just a booster that sent you flying through a bunch of goal points so the fanfare played a bunch of times. I think it received two votes, one of which was 5 and one was 0. But I baleeted it.

Oh man, you were so close to the goal! Amazing!

Yes my level has some problems. The goal is to the right but there are multiple paths to get there. The main path is to get tossed up by the wrecking ball (the coins are supposed to be a clue). But since this was so unpredictable and requires more luck than skill, I turned the death trap to the left into an alternative route. I wanted each area to be fun to explore and to die in, but it's more fun when in editor mode since you can just spawn wherever you want :p

Ah, that explains it! Some kind of signage might be clearer. Also from my experience, once you fall off the main path it's nearly impossible to get back on because all your boosters point practically straight up, so you just keep bouncing up and down without being able to move sideways onto the path.

it makes no sense whatsoever to curate an exhibition by popular internet vote. they should have just left the game selection to a team of people who actually know what they are doing. it was part of the reason that the exhibit was so scattershot in terms of quality

That's easy.

He'll do a sequel, called WormsDC 2, followed by a very successful WormsDC Armageddon.
Then a less successful venture into the third dimension with WormsDC 3D, the spin-off WormsDC Forts and WormsDC Mayhem.
Later, he'll do a revival with WormsDC Reloaded, which is heavily rejected by the original hardcore fan Ben.
Followed by that, he'll make everyone happy with WormsDC Revolution, after being back at his former employer iBar.

But but but there's health bars... yeah I got nothing. :p

I'm sure it's just a sign of early-in-development that they don't have much to show, but... yeah I can't think of many characters that make me think "Sony". I mean recently there's... God of War and LBP? Maybe Uncharted I guess? They haven't really focused on marketable mascots since the PS1 days, and I dunno if they wanna dig that deep.

Rathcet and clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Nathan drake, sack boy, the guy from infamous, patapon, loco-roco, Ico, the guy from shadow of the colosus and about a billion characters from the Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Crash and Spyro went multi-platform, but they're still PS1 icons.

That they announced the game with such a lackluster lineup seems pretty telling of it's overal quality though! Although I guess unlike Nintendo, Sony don't actually own many of the characters their console is famous for.

Odd. I made this post, it accepted it but it didn't appear. Moderation queue perhaps? I dunno. If so, delete the first one please mods!

Anyway, I just wanted to add that this was inevitable, I am sure we all knew that Team17 couldn't keep hosting a subforum just for us forever. Sadly, times change and things end. This will be my last ever use of SargeMcCluck!

For anyone who didn't notice, there's a new 100% Off-Topic (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=57152) thread. Make it glorious!

Free Steam keys! Got them from the latest humble bundle, already own the games. Didn't want them posted in public so I've put them here instead.

Quote if you take one or both of them so people know they're gone.

It's all AT's fault. I honestly hadn't thought about it but now I'm totally stalking this place on judgement day and trying to get the last post in. For great justice.

My goodness, it's still open.

Feels like the last days of steam on BR (not that I was around for those, but y'know...)
