Right, so that would include agnostics. Heck, the way you've phrased it would include most Anglicans.

Well ok, agnostics would fall under that. I fail to see how Anglicans would though, they're not free of the delusion of a god.

They're planning on porting it to other frameworks eventually.

What is Silverlight for and why is it better than, say, Flash?

Microsoft's marketing strategy thus far has been 'keep offering to install it until Andrew caves'. That's not how you get me to install something.

Moonlight is the open source alternative to moonlight, what mono is to .NET

Silverlight is basically .NET but in a browser. So anything you can do in .NET (that wouldn't compromise security) you can do in silverlight. I suspect though there are probably ways to slip viruses through Silverlight because you can't have anything as complex as that and made by Microsoft without there being 50,000 exploits.

CyberShadow

Uhh, well actually Silverlight is just Microsoft's Flash. It doesn't really have any advantages, except using an already widely used framework (.NET).

Microsoft's marketing strategy thus far has been 'keep offering to install it until Andrew caves'. That's not how you get me to install something.Just an alternative, really, a web outlet for Microsoft technologies.

The only advantage is if you work with Visual Studio and .NET languages, Silverlight slides right in, instead of completely switching frameworks for Flash.

It probably won't go even near Flash's popularity, but at least it keeps Adobe from monopolizing.

So instead of implementing all the nice HTML 5 canvas, video, etc stuff in IE8 they made their own proprietary plugin. Go microsoft.Well it's been around since IE7 (yes it's been a while now, hasn't it), it's just nobody really cares. :p

So my keyboard decided to spontaneously die last weekend.

So after a fit of rage and cursing the old thing, I got a Logitech G15 Keyboard:
http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2007/08/G15_CTG.jpg

This thing is awesome. Even though it's not available in a Portuguese layout (you'd think "not enough demand" but pretty much every store here is sold out!), it is just as functional and swanky as all of Logitech's products. My particular favorite features are:
- It uses the standard button layout, unlike most modern keyboards that try to change and tweak the layout with tons of useless multimedia keys, changing button sizes and places, and more crap.
- It's very comfortable and the illuminated keys are very handy. (I know I know even though any pro PC user won't ever look down at this keyboard :p)
- The LCD screen. Even though it's got a completely open SDK, very few programs (specially games) actually make use of it. :( But, Miranda IM has a plugin that lets me chat JUST USING THE KEYBOARD AND ITS LCD SCREEN HOW IS THIS NOT COMPLETELY AWESOME?!?!?!?!

So... my first attempt, unsuccessful. :(

Installed Half-Life: Source, attempted to run directly from Steam, got a white screen. Can hear the sound from the little Valve intro, but can see nothing but white. Closed it, tried windowed mode, no dice. Tried with -novid, still no dice. If I move the window outside the edge of the screen and pull it back it goes black and displays some info on fps and other stuff, although it seems frozen. Restarted steam, and now it gave me that annoying "This game is not available right now" message.

I'm in the process of re-downloading. Is there anything else I should get/configure before trying to run games? Should I install directx, drivers for my graphics card, something else?

Look in the AppDB on www.winehq.org to see if there are any special things you need to do.

You can run winecfg if you want to fiddle with the config. Probably the most important thing there is that you can change the Windows version it pretends to be.

It's the same as with child abuse or rape.
If someone doesn't consent to various sexual activity, it should be illegal.
And children as well as animals certainly can consent to it.
In addition, the authority is abused, because an animal tied to a post doesn't really have an option.

Zoophilia becoming a new sexual revolution is just ridiculous.
Because with the same arguments you could call child abuse a sexual revolution too.
It'll always be cruelty to animals.

In fairness to Rich and to researchers who back her bill, it can be difficult to find zoophiles — it seems they prefer to find you. In March, after publishing a blog post that questioned whether bestiality was really linked with rape and child molestation, as Rich claimed in public remarks, I began an email correspondence with a zoophile who had found the article online. He soon decided I was open-minded enough to discuss the subject, but he insisted on some unusual conditions to protect his anonymity.

James (not his real name) was wary of a prosecutor's subpoena for New Times phone records. So he insisted we talk only through secondlife.com

No surprise there.

i certainly hope you meant can't consent

Edit: Scratch that, I see what you meant, obviously it was a typo. (I first though you were debating can't vs doesn't).

Also, in Sweden, bestiality is actually legal, but 99.9% of cases are classed as animal abuse and you get prosecuted via that route. There was a huge movement quite recently to get it made a crime, and I believe it's happening shortly (or may have recently happened).

Sweden also had a short stint in the 70s or 80s where child pornography was made legal, which brought up the following doom: there's a library in Sweden that must carry copies of _all_ literature produced in the country. This includes the child pornography produced while it was legal. Anybody can than request copies of said literature.. ugh. There are now things being implemented to prevent that from happening - a journalist brought it to the attention of the country after successfully managing to repeatedly borrow the literature.

It's not the same as child abuse or rape. There is no evidence to say that the animals suffer in all cases. The people speaking out in the article are not advocating animals tied to posts, they are giving the animals a choice. In some cases the animal is acting as the dominant one and/or expressing enjoyment.

If you actually read the whole article, what they are suggesting is that animals may consent. From page 4:
Based on her interviews with zoos, Miletski suspects that animals consent to sex with human partners. But she concedes there is no sure way to know.

Ron, the zoophile from the western United States, points out that critics of his sexual practices "can't agree if animals are sentient or are dumb. They can't be both. If [animals] are sentient, [critics] would have to admit that animals can decide for themselves if they want intimacy when and where they choose." Ron believes this to be the case, as do the other zoos interviewed for this article. If animals are not sentient, he continues, "they don't know the difference, and what is it hurting?"

Zoophiles say they act upon the same nonverbal cues for sex as humans do. Brenner, the zoophile from Southwest Florida, asserts that humans having sex are acting on their own animal instincts. And if so, it's silly to deprive another animal of those instincts on the grounds that the animal has a less developed brain.

So I just got done shaving with a conventional razor rather than an electric foorrr maybe the 4th time in my life or so. Took about 10 times longer, but I think the result is, predictably, superior. Of course, my skin isn't used to it, but I'm using snooty shave products loaded with aloe and all that junk, so it isn't like my face is on fire or whatever. I'll probably have to make a habit of shaving the old fashioned way. I think a little bit of razor burn is worth the closeness and, you know, not having every other whisker just yanked out of my face.

I did manage to inflict a very neatly-spaced series of fine cuts in the upper layers of skin on my thumb and forefinger, though, from stupidly trying to clear the overgrown shmutz out of the blades, before figuring out that the same result could be achieved by running water through the back of the thing. Also worth mentioning is that that was the least shaven I've ever been, about 3 weeks since the last one. Felt like a hobo. Should have taken a before picture.

If you get razor burn, I'd recommend an after shave balm (as opposed to cologne, eau de toilette or "aftershave", which is just for fragrance) - I use the "Nivia aftershave balm" and it's excellent. Without it my face goes bright red and is extremely painful. Also put on something that lathers and is for shaving before you shave, and don't go against the grain of your hair - it's better to go with the grain of the hair several times than go against it once.

Also, doing a traditional wet shave (with a badger bristle brush, a lathered up soap or cream and a safety razor that doesn't use disposable cartridges - Google image safety razor if you don't know what I mean) is, from what I've been told, much nicer on the skin and I know nobody who gets razor burn with one of those. Of course, it requires more skill to perform...

My beard grows slowly. I shaved about 2 or 3 weeks ago and my facial hair is probably 0.5-1cm.

I shave every few months because I really hate shaving. I always use my crappy £5 electric razor. It's quite alright at the time (yields a nice close shave) but the following week is itch-hell. :(

I can't be bothered with grooming products. I'm a lazy, furry kind of guy. Plus the hobo look kinds suits me.

Yeah, I was using a good foaming shaving gel with, like I said, buttloads of aloe and all that. Worked pretty well. Even going against the grain didn't bother me much, just as the razor itself had advertised, so yay for that.

Really improving the comfort and ease at which you glide, allowing you to remove more hair without having to reshave a particular area, and completely eliminating any kind of burn or pain.

http://www.monopolycitystreets.com/I can imagine that would go on for ages... I roll a 7... oh look another street I haven't visited before... now I own 11 streets in the world, only 8918053789 more to go!

Though I'm guessing it's just Monopoly with renamed streets. At least they're not doing that voting process again... it was possible for people to vote an unlimited number of times... no wonder Exeter and Keele got the top spots.

Leading up to this the press didn't understand what the test was about and presumed the IAAF thought she was a man.

So what was up with Derren Brown's lottery prediction show? Was it really 58 minutes of nonsense about DEEP MATHS and his usual tricks dressed up in another form, 2 minutes of "haha you guys thinking I fixed the lottery you are dumbasses" and one sentence of "C'mon guys it was just a trick"?

So was it just a camera trick? I feel a bit disappointed.

Can I just say that, without even watching the show, that would be exactly what I'd expect from a Derren Brown show simply going on the basis of what I've heard about him in the past?

Saying that, I'm predisposed to like someone with Derren Brown's attitude. A good dose of scepticism never did anyone any harm*.

* this statement is blatantly not true when you consider, for example, Galileo. Oh look I'm being sceptical about scepticism. Fun times.

The DEEP MATHS wasn't nonsense, to be fair, it was just monumentally irrelevant.

The rest seemed to be fairly standard Derren fare. I'm not really disappointed he didn't reveal the real method, because I'm pretty sure we, the internet, have it figured anyway, but the 'wisdom of crowds' explanation was obviously nonsense and I didn't like the way it was presented as The Answer.

Some top class Derren funny in there, though.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting a real explanation on how to predict the lottery (because it's impossible), but every other time he's gone on to explain how he does things (like using extremely good memory to cheat at cards, or beat people at chess, etc.) they usually seem plausible (or maybe even are the truth in those two cases), but the "explanation" in this show wasn't plausible in the slightest and none of it seemed in the slightest bit relevant.

I usually love everything he does, and know all his "magic" boils down to is tricking people, but this is the first time I felt that he was treating the viewers as being complete dumbasses and I just felt like he was insulting my intelligence. I felt it was more like Uri Geller than Derren Brown.

It was just a lame trick with a screen. They froze the side with the balls and changed them as they came up.

I'm not a fan of Derren Brown. Many of his 'tricks' are just a case of repeating them several times until they work, and using that as the clip on the programme. Such as the horse racing betting, the 10 coin flip.

There was also one I saw where he invited 3 or 4 people into a room, and each took a chocolate mini-roll and sat down. He predicated where each would sit and which chocolate they would take (they were all the same and lined up in a row). Now, I know he would be able to have a good guess at those, but he makes out that he knows for sure - which is impossible. There's too much randomness in the system. He then asked them to eat the mini-roll and the one left over had a blade in it.

Then there's the russian roulette episode - the gun wasn't loaded (fair enough).

It's all just a gimmick. I just wish he would use proper illusions. I like his mind trick stuff where he influences people to do things, but half of his stuff anybody could do.

I really like it, but the first third of the book is definitely the most interesting part. That's when he discusses the methods used etc. After that it gets a little repetitive as he plows through the list of species, it's still interesting but you feel that you've gotten the point.
