I did a couple of random acts of kindness today. I feel so special. You go, Zeor! And condolences on the first anniversary of... you know what.

I've probably been doing a few too many directed acts of kindness... I've come to the conclusion that given I can't be in love with someone owing to them loving someone else, I'm going to have to direct all my energies and feelings for them into being friends with them as hard as I can. So I'm kinda feeling happy but exhausted.

I suppose I'm cursing my luck a bit that I have a friend who's a woman of my age who I know well and is really interesting, who I can make laugh and who considers me sensitive, and that presumably there's someone else who fills these criteria and more. But ah well, as the old saying goes, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Only probably not as bad. That was something else. A year ago, specifically.

I just started reading The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. My brother got the book at his college's library.
Fun!
It seems to be all the books in one, but I'm not entirely sure. It has a nice intro in it with a lot of explanations and history of how he got the idea and stuff.

Edit: Oh so that's where Babel Fish comes from!

I've read The Restaurant at the end of the Universe through So Long and Thanks for All the Fish several times, but I only read the original HHGG once, and I didn't take much of it in. I should see if the library has it.

This seemed vaguely appropriate for the current board mood, and also to tie in with all the Star Warsyness. I picked Sarge and Run because they've been around ages, and actually are from the "old community". Nutter's there because, though he hasn't been round for ages... who else would you have as Yoda?

Woah a 9 year old hacker. There is of course a difference between a nine-year-old hacker and nine-year-old who thinks he's a hacker. "Script Kiddie" taken quite literally, possibly.

Or even worse. Aged 11 I thought I was good with computers because I knew how to get into the games on an Acorn (right click on the cross in any of the directories they'll let you look at to go up a directory level, keep doing that till you hit the root directory, then go hunting for games), I could get into the Acorn's equivalent of a DOS prompt (and more importantly, get people out who had got stuck in there), and I knew a fair bit of BASIC. I was actually made school computer monitor (yes, I know that's ambiguous, and I appreciate that if someone else had said that I'd be the first to make an awful pun based around it) and, in fairness, Acorns are so simple that most of the time I could cope with whatever they threw up (and when I couldn't, SIOASIBOA could). Now I just get confused when people talk computer jargon at me.

Heh, I've just found something online that allows me to emulate an Acorn on my PC. Pity it costs £149.

Wouldn't it be simpler though if the boats were different colours, and had a correspondingly coloured score? Make it easier to tell who was who.

EDIT: Oh, wait, they are different colours. Very subtly different shades of brown.

EDIT: No, I was right. That's just a measure of how sunk they are.

Can't attach. Too big.

I pushed one of the boats on top of the other. When I fire the top boat's thrust, it spins in a circle (the boat). This propels both boats in spirals!

besides, there's something wrong in it. since it compares the sizes as uncompressed (and my NTFS partition is compressed), values can vary a lot. for instance, my p2p client's Temp folder (incomplete downloads) takes up 136gb (bigger than my hdd!). compressed, it only takes 5gb.

not counting that, it's not too bad. it clearly shows how my biggest folders are "Jogos" (games), "MyDownloads" and SupFiles (my work. as well as p2p downloads).

POST OF THE WEEK

It just gets more and more insane as it goes on. And it starts off pretty mental.
Really? You liked it? Well in that case, how about there is this particular cursed statue, which, you MUST NOT harm or touch in any way. If you do, then all but one of your worms are loaded into a flying pelican blindfolded.
The pelican 's mouth is on fire on the inside, so your worms are being burned and crunched in a terribly twisted painful way with screams of anguish.
The pelican drops the first worm in a burlap sack into the sea where he shakes about and drowns. You can use the movement keys to try and manouvre him onto land before he sinks forever.
The second worm is savagely beaten by a koala with a pineapple (on the pelicans back) and you must try and dodge his fierce blows and jump off the pelican without getting stabbed by the trechorous marsupial with the pineapple. Try and jump onto some land.
Your third worm is thrown by a proffesional hammer-thrower out of the pelican's mouth towards the statue you befouled. The statue wields a tremendous kebab skewer which you must not fall on or you will be skewered. At this point you can use any of your existing weapons to manipulate your fall, but the enemy worms will be tossing slow-moving harpoons at you. These are poison tipped and will make you poisoned.
The next worm is stretched out on the ground into the shape of a trampoline by sharp pegs. Feathers from the pelican bounce up and down on your worm with pneumatic drills, thus drlling huge holes into the poor worm. You must click on each feather to remove its evil spirit and let it float away. Try and get rid of all the feathers before you get so many holes you snap.
The next worm is stretched out by two koalas and fired like an elastic-band. For moments you can adjust the trajector slightly, thus attempting to land on the terrain.
The next worm is continually burned and chewed in the buccal cavity of the bird. You must try and get him to fall down the oesophagus. If he does, he will fall and wake up from his horrible nightmare, with his original health and weapons in his starting place.
The sixth worm simply falls on to the ground somewhere. The seventh is teleported to a far-away land where he becomes a slave and must pick coconuts from tall trees for his masters throughout the rest of his life.

How's that for a malfunction? Oh my... did I really type all that? What was I thinking... well anyway I'm sure I win the award for the best/worst malfunction possible. Hope to see it soon in the next worms game.

In fairness, though, squirting someone with water basically isn't funny once you pass puberty. It was barely funny when it happened to Kilroy, and that was opportunist. Premeditated squirting is just... boring. And he's right; he does ingdulge press and public more than most.

I think he got what he deserved. I mean the same channel 4 team did it to sharon osbourne and she ran back after them with a bucket of water! And captain cruise had the nerve to say "you are a jerk, im out here working hard giving you people interviews" Of course working hard mate. So, hang on, now you're advocating shooting bricks at people?

Fair game if you think he deserved bringing down a notch, but he's hardly going to get much work with his face all messed up by masonry catapulted at point-blank range, is he?

Edit: Idunno, I mean, I'm all for some lighthearted jabs at people who deserve it, but he didn't have to talk to them, did he? He chose to, for reasons of his own, and effectively got punished for it. It would be far funnier to me if they'd found someone who was hiding in a huge mansion and not coming out for less than $100,000 a day and squirted them somehow. That would serve them right.

MY DELL XPS ARRIVED!!!

WOO-HOO!!!

It's too big for my desk...

I was going to buy an Inspiron XPS to replace this ageing iMac. I decided to go for a Powerbook :p Hopefully, we'll order it in about a month or two.

Reasons for choosing the Powerbook over the Dell:

COST!! Despite what people think, I kitted out a 15" PB with the same specs as the top-of-the-range Inspiron XPS. Although the Inspiron had a bigger screen (17") and a faster processor, it came out at over £500 MORE than the PB - that didn't include MS Office (you can get a student edition for Macs, which costs £100, the only version for Windows is the full version which costs £300*)
Size. The PB is thinner - a lot thinner. OK, it has a smaller screen, but even the 17" is thinner than the Inspiron or XPS. I felt I could put two PowerBooks on top of each other (closed) to match the thickness of the Inspiron (closed)
Weight - My friend brought his Inspiron into school and when I lifted it up, I thought I was lifting a desktop. It seriously felt almost as heavy as this 5 year old iMac I'm sitting in front of. When I looked on the Dell website, I found out it was 1.5Kg's heavier than the Powerbook 15" and over a kilo heavier than the 17" Powerbook
OSX - I like Mac operating systems. They are more secure and imo look nicer than WinXP.
The PowerBook looks a lot sleeker and generally better than those horrible black Dulls. (intentional typo)
It would really annoy my friends if I got a Powerbook instead of a Dell - they love Dell's (I would also go as far as to call them dell fanboys)

* The student edition is identical to the standard edition for mac, apart from it can be installed legally on 3 computers, and it can't be upgraded. For some reason, there isn't a student edition for windows.

lol.

I got the XPS desktop. I got it for a few reasons:

1) It's cheaper than building a PC here. I'm serious. Inflation here is horrible. As well as that, my mom works for UCD(http://www.ucd.ie), so she decreased the price by €200. Which is serious money.
2) It runs all my games
3) It looks very, very good. Unlike the other Dells.
4) It has enough space to upgrade to high heaven. There's enough space for 1TB. I'm not sure of whether that's for RAM or HDD. But it's a lot.
5) It's cheaper than a Mac.

If a Mac ran more games, and was a bit cheaper, I would buy it very quickly. Macs look MUCH cooler(soz) than PCs. Most PCs, that is.

I'll agree with you there - it is the best looking of all the Dell's. Trouble is, when placed next to a PowerBook, no Dell laptop has a chance on looks

4) It has enough space to upgrade to high heaven. There's enough space for 1TB. I'm not sure of whether that's for RAM or HDD. But it's a lot.

I'm assuming you have the Inspiron XPS Gen2 ( http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=305&l=en&oc=N07XPS5&s=dhs&sbc=inspn_xps ). Based on that, I can't see how you could have 1000Gb of HD space. 1000Gb is RAM is impossible - desktop computers only recently cracked the 8Gb barrier. The only way I can see that you get 1Terabyte of storage is to have a load of external hard drives - as far as I know, laptops only have one HD bay.

5) It's cheaper than a Mac.

I disagree on this point, sorry.

Internal 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet NIC

European - Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth 2.0 Module

Total Price: £2,037.25 (including VAT at 1.5% and shipping

The only differences spec-wise are the processors (Intel processor = faster, but probably much cheaper than the Motorolla G4) and graphics card. The PowerBook graphics card can power a 30" monitor, which has well over 4Megapixels. The graphics card is probably the only thing that might make the Dell cheaper. But only slightly. If you put the fastest processor in the Dell, that bumps the price up by another £149 - making the Powerbook (which had the fastest processor) a very nice deal.

I realise this isn't a totally fair test, but its as close as I could get - both computers were top-of-the-range models.

If a Mac ran more games, and was a bit cheaper, I would buy it very quickly. Macs look MUCH cooler(soz) than PCs. Most PCs, that is.

That's the one downside of macs :)

Macs look MUCH cooler(soz) than PCs
That's only because you lack imagination. PCs are so preposterously customisable you can have them look more-or-less however you please. You could make a beautiful wooden case for one if you liked. I've seen a couple made entirely from LEGO, and one made with a little model bride and groom and a lot of bunting inside, with a glass side engraved with the words "Will you marry me?" apparently made by a geek for his (hopefully equally geeky) girlfriend. I don't know what she said. You can't do that with a Mac, at least, not half as easily.

Mac desktops are more expensive in comparison to PC's. But, the top-spec laptops seem to match quite fairly to Dell, as I proved.

Yes, but that still doesn't mean you should boycott a worthy cause just cause of one a**.
Well, for him it seems to be a good enough reason. You can't change other people's point of view. You can just get rid of them or cripple them if they are too much a problem for you :p

I'm glad Radiohead said they couldn't go
They offered Radiohad a place, but they refused because Jonny's wife had recently given birth.
I must say, Coldplay dissapointed me. :(Yeah, the crowd-participation thing Chris Martin tried at the end of In My Place worked great at Glastonbury, but it just failed at Live 8.

I know. That's why I said I'm glad they didn't go because then two of my favorite bands in the same place and me not being there would make me sad.:p

I want people to see my new page, and I don't want to spam to do it. So I come here, to the Unspammable Thread to say:

http://apathy.freeownhost.com -- my new "hub" page for my twin sites. With added bonus: there are six (at the last count) randomly-appearing "extra" characters and things that take you to other parts of my sites.

I didn't watch Live 8, as I didn't see how watching it would help anyone.

Mr Bob Geldof.

Mr Bob Geldof.

Google him.

I just saw him on TV talking for a sec on the news. He seemed sensable when talking about politics, but it was just a few words so I can't really judge him by that.

This guy is playing CS:S, and suddenly finds himself inside the game. It's like RL Counter-Strike, looks awesome. :p

From the people who brought you Max Payne: www.alanwake.com (I recommend browsing gametrailers.com for the trailer, as it tends to be faster and more reliable than any of the links on the official site).

Those graphics make it look like a Half-Life 2 killer. I'm scared just to THINK of what the required specs must be.

It does look fantastic, but I wouldn't call it a HL2 killer. HL2 will get prettier with the HDR stuff that will be released soon.
Altough this one's got more detailed scenarios. I'll certainly get this one once it's out.

Just saw the video, the landscapes are AWESOME. The whole sky stuff is also AWESOME.
The only thing that didn't impress me was the player model and the animations of this.
But the landscapes kick ass :p

The landscapes look breathtaking and awesome, I'll probably spend most of the game time just looking at the Landscapes in awe, taking pics using print screen.

Specs?

Probably P4 2.8GHz +

AMD Athlon 64 3200+

512MB Ram Minimum/ 1GB prefered

Radeon 9600 and above/ Radeon 9800, X800 prefered

GeForceFX 5700+ and above/ GeForce 6 series, GeForce 7 prefered

I'm just guessing :p
