YOU FAIL! Eat epilepsy! First you're making it look like Teletuby land, then you're forcing people to have to drive out in to the country to recycle their ****, meaning there is more fossil fuel consumption, more carbon dioxide emissions, the grass is destroyed, there is more traffic than normal, all this providing people can be arsed to put in the effort!

What does one do with used condoms if one cannot flush them down the toilet? Does one put it in the plastic bin, and if so, does one have to wash it out first and leave it to dry on the drainage board?

Here in Austria recycling is even more sophisticated.
We have bins for:

Plastics, composite materials and packaging materials
Metal (basically aluminium and steel cans)
White glass (transparent)
Colured glass (green, brown,...)
Paper, cardboard,...
Biodegradable waste

All of these are recycled.
Some communities don't collect biodegradable waste though.

Also, in some regions there is a collection system solely for milk/drink cartons (tetrapacks).
It's managed by private companies though and there were a few scandals, where it was found out that they simply dug the collected boxes somewhere instead of recycling them, but still collected the subsidy monies.
:/

Residual waste

That's the only waste that gets dumped on a landfill. In theory.
You know, sometimes I think all sci-fi that deals with the terrible future where human beings are scattered across space in hundreds of colonised worlds, forced to leave our home planet due to war or total environmental disaster won't be too far from the truth.
The problem is that our overpopulation and pollution efforts are progressing faster than the one for space travel, let alone extraterrestrial colonization.

There might be some secret colonisation plans. You know, hand-picking the best and brightest for the new world.

I don't know what all to make of the CPU temperature readings I've been getting

Intel Thermal Analysis Tool says
ACPI Thermal Zone Temp: 42C
CPU 0: 47C
CPU 1: 46C ( I have a core 2 Duo processor, I take it these are the temps of each core)

However, I wanted a nice readoud next to my clock, so I tried SpeedFan, which tells me the following (they both change like crazy - I just quickly wrote down all the values of both programs at once)
Temp1: 42C
Core 0: 32C
Core 1: 31C

Now, TAT"s ACPI is the same as SF's "Temp" so I'll assume these to be the same, whatever they are, but then why are CPU 0 and 1 in TAT different from SF's Core 0 and 1? I'm certain that all units are in centigrade, so there's no C vs. F confusion... Also, ACPI and Temp1 don't seem to change often if at all - both have been 42 for a really long time...

Seriously, stop messing with sacred stuff, Hollywood!

Also they are filming some of the stuff here in Mexico, in Durango.

I was just playing ut2004 on my laptop, because I haven't played video games in a really long time. I don't really feel the heat on my legs, but then I touch the bottom of the computer and it's too hot to touch.

According to Intel Thermal Analysis Tool, my cpu was just now running at 98ºC. Centigrade, not Fahrenheit. As in nearly the boiling point of water. Can NOT have been good, but she's still running, so *shrug*. Now she's gone down to about 60ºC (I normally have my power settings set so my core 2 duo is running at 50% max - I changed that to 100% (which was the factory default BTW) to run the game, and Glod did it get hot...) Next time I'm going to try setting the cpu to 75% for playing games and see how that goes.:p

Of course it is -- "laughing out loud": it's a phrasal verb. Whether one should append verb endings to it or just say "lol" for everything and assume the initial "L" changes meaning is another question. Personally, I'd append if lower case only.

More specifically it's a participle phrase. Saying "lolled" is like saying "runninged" or "eatinged." "lolling" is like "runninging" or "eatinging." Really, what you're saying is "(laughing out loud)+ed", and does that become "laughinged out loud", or does the adverb "loud" somehow gain an "ed" by some miracle of language?

I propose LOL LedOL and LingOL for the general "laugh out loud," the past participle, and the present participle thereof respectively.

Interesting note: if you say "lol, I went to the store" lol is used as in interjection, but if you expand it to "laughing out loud, I went to the store" then suddenly it becomes an adverbial participle phrase implying that the speaker laughed as he went to the store, which is entirely different from the intended meaning...

well, we've had $1 coins for a while now, dating back to the first silver dollars in 1794

in terms of real circulation, though, the mint has only tried to bring the dollar coin into common usage twice before: from 1971-1981 with the eisenhower (and later anthony) dollar, and then in 2000 with the sacajawea dollar

both failed miserably

I am ashamed......ok guys, I've enacted the first stages of detox. I purchased the 15th anniversary collection of the first 8 megaman games, and since she's on a leave of absense from work (she fell off a step going into our house and banged up her foot), she has no reason not to indulge in the greatness of megaman.

hopefully I'll have this disorder of hers corrected within the week, but please send me all your prayers for a speedy recovery.

If you got the Gamecube version, you use A to shoot and B to jump and there's no way to change the controls.

Not necessarily a bad thing once you get used to it (the bigger button being used for most of the mashing) but if it's your introduction to Megaman it's just gonna make it confusing as all get-out if you play any of the other games afterwards.

On the other hand, I do believe the X series and Zero series generally feature remappable controls. So... yeah, maybe not such a problem after all. :p

I'm thinking there's absolutely no way he's going to use this thing, and she mentioned the same thought when we looked at one of the litter boxes in wal mart. so knowing that I wouldn't agree to buying this over-priced monstrosity, she apparently went and bought it without my knowledge from a place that we can't even return it to even if we CAN'T use it...and if I say any of this when she gets home then I'm going to end up getting yelled at... 'stay here for a minute whilst I go get some ice creams'. (http://www.the-broken-mirror.net/files/story/comic.php?id=39)

The author aparantly has an english degree.

Although the comic is not yet very far in, we estimate it will conclude in around 750 pages, divided into four parts, or volumes

It's been going for a year and a quarter. THe latest page it it's 119th. thats roughly 100 pages a year, so you'll have to wait a further six and a half years for the end. to put that in perspective, the comic is currently set in the near future, when it's done it'll be set in the near past.

This epic length wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't for the snails pace the comic is moving at. the author describes it (IIRC) as a 'sci-fi romance story'. 100 pages in and we're only just being intoduced to the virtual world (the only vaugely sici-fi element so far) in which the actual plot is going to take place. everything up untill now has been backstory.

The broken mirror is based on a 300 page novel. It should not be this long.

It's a damn shame too, as the art isn't bad and the colouring's quite nice really. The last comic the artist and author did was Between Two Worlds (http://www.between-two-worlds.net/index.html) which is actually quite good. The dialougue is less obnoxiously wordy, the story's pretty nice and it's a little over 300 pages in length (although it's been waiting for the rest of the epilouge for a long while).

AndrewTaylor
12 Jan 2008, 19:03

Paul.Power
12 Jan 2008, 20:14
Saying that, the more I read of this, the more absurd I find the dialogue. And the constant drama bombs that never let up.

The funny thing is:

even an educated mother****er like me doesn't use "furtively". It's not just being incapable of writing dialogue for different people, it's being incapable of writing dialogue entirely. People don't say **** like that, it's not how they talk. They don't even use stupid words like that if they're trying to be epic. Now I do say words like "furtively". I say them without thinking. Not trying to be epic, just casually picking out an appropriate word from my internal thesaurus.

But I still see what he's getting at. IMHO, some characters can say that. It's actually believable that Galen (lol, Galen) would say that, given what I know of him. But all of the characters speak like this, bar one or two who are supposed to be "obviously lower class".

I'm quite sure that even the characters that are meant to be lower class talk like that too.

In fact I think it's Galen's stoner neighbor that uses the word furtively.

It's also depressing that I spend more time talking about bad webcomics than I do talking about good ones.

Very nifty stuff indeed (the solar flare video).

In fact I think it's Galen's stoner neighbor that uses the word furtively.Hang on, I'll go check.

...

Hey, you're right. Sorry. I think several higher portions of my brain had shut off by then.

My guess would be that he's supposed to be mocking Galen's style of speech there. At least, if I'd decided to write a character like him saying that, that would be my reasoning. I can't account for Elanor Cooper.

It would also indicate that LOUD GUY was smarter than he looked, and that hidden depths would eventually be revealed. However, he appears to be a bit-part character designed to emphasise Galen's rubbish life, so yeah... actually, if you interpret it that way, Cooper has, in about four strips, inadvertently created a character more complex and likeable than the protagonist, who's been around for goodness-knows-how-many.

I'm quite sure that even the characters that are meant to be lower class talk like that too.

It's also depressing that I spend more time talking about bad webcomics than I do talking about good ones. It's odd how enjoyable it becomes. I read SA's Your Gaming Webcomic Sucks and so does CAD thread everyday to keep up on the never-ending bottomless barrel of despair.

I came to a horrifying realization about myself fairly recently that I don'tfeel comfortable blogging about while my personal website is getting its fifteen minutes of fame, so I'll post about it here for now.

I'm fascinated with the inner workings of the mind. Had I the time and the finances I'd quite happily study Psychology and Psychiatry, not so I could pursue it as a career but more out of personal interest. I recently discovered that people who are left-handed are more susceptible to neurological disorders such as Bipolarity, Schizophrenia and the like, which is weird because I have such a bizarre fascination with neurological disorders it's scary... and I'm left-handed. This is probably largely irrelevant, but even so it intrigues me.

I've always been incredibly aware of how my mind works. I had to stop playing The Game is because my brain had actually associated the act of remembering things with The Game itself, so whenever my mind linked one thing to another I would instantly be reminded of The Game and thus would lose, rendering the entire exercise even more pointless than it already is. Why did my mind make that association, though? Why was I quite able to play The Game for over three years before my brain said, "Hang on a minute..." and decided to spoil it for me?

I'm constantly analyzing everything I do from a psychological point of view, perhaps excessively. I know why I choose to do certain things, and I have strong hypotheses for why I choose to do others. Matty made an observation a couple of months ago that my writing - fiction, editorials, forum posts, the lot - fits certain patterns as if I've pieced the sentence together like a jigsaw puzzle, and I think the reason I do this is ebcause I latch on to particualr phrases and sentences I hear/read in other people's work and assimilate them into my own method of speech. In short, everything I have ever said or will ever say can be pieced together from things other people will have already said.

One of the things I've long known about myself, though, is that I'm an emotional parasite. I need other people to be happy for me to be happy. I feed off of it, draw energy from it, and if I'm the source of that happiness then all the better. That's probably one of the reasons I write comedy. But I realized last night that this parasitic nature is the very reason why my relationship with Amy was the way it was; why I was quite happy to be Under the Thumb. The reason, simply put, is although it caused me no ends of stress and financial woe to do so, making Amy happy made me happy. That Amy was a selfish, self-obsessed control freak didn't help the matter either.

Now, that I eventually broke up with her is proof that I can break out of this cycle, or at least proof that I have a level of tolerance for that sort of thing. But what's worrying is that I may well find myself getting into exactly the same sort of relationship in the future and making the exact same mistake simply because I need other people to be happy - the person I'm with to be happy - in order to keep going.

That said, while it was a detriment in my last relationship, who's to say it won't be a positive in the next? It'd only be a real problem if I were to meet Amy's American Doppelganger, and i think I'm smart enough now not to get involved with that sort of person anymore. If I meet someone who is just happy to be with me, then I'll always be happy. Right? Possibly. Who can say?

I realize most of this probably doesn't make sense. But it's the sort of thing I think about. I have no idea why.

I don't see anythnig wrong with trying to discover what makes you tick. I find it hard to know certain things about myself, and I wish I could, because it'd make my life a hell of a lot easier. Also, I too tend to latch on to sayings and phrases I've heard or read, and who doesn't? Without such a trait, the world would be without dodgy catchphrase based sketchshows and moronic internet memes, of which there are OVER NINE THOUSAND!

I need other people to be happy for me to be happy.
There's nothing wrong with this. I find it hard to be around miserable people and I'd like to think I'm always trying to make people happy.

If you want to avoid a relationship like your last one, then at least by recognising what was wrong you're already halfway there.

Why was I quite able to play The Game for over three years before my brain said, "Hang on a minute..." and decided to spoil it for me?By 'The Game' you mean your relationship with Amy, right? One word for you: Voldemort.

You're not alone. I'm always questioning common behaviour in others and myself, asking myself why I should do it, why I'm doing it, what effect it has on other people and whether it's necessary or not. You could say it's a result of being sensitive to other people's view of you or because you want to be more efficient as a human in interacting and solving problems. At some point recently I decided it was best to go in to autopilot and let my personal standards, personality and level of confidence decide what to say, but still watch over my behaviour to stop me from getting unnecessarily worked up, by detaching myself from the situation. I see my personality and what I say as a combination of all the experiences I've had so far, and I believe it's the same for everyone else. Perhaps you do over-analyse and come out with what you do because you think people are used to it and will recognise it. Don't take my observation too seriously, though. Personally-identifiable writing and verbal styles are not unusual in any way. Do you like Derren Brown?

One of the things I've long known about myself, though, is that I'm an emotional parasite. I need other people to be happy for me to be happy. I feed off of it, draw energy from it, and if I'm the source of that happiness then all the better. That's probably one of the reasons I write comedy. The reason, simply put, is although it caused me no ends of stress and financial woe to do so, making Amy happy made me happy. That Amy was a selfish, self-obsessed control freak didn't help the matter either. You'll probably still be working things out like this for a while yet, it's part of the process. It sounded to me like you described insecurity and the feeling that you'd do anything to keep the relationship going. I wouldn't describe you as an emotional parasite, I'd say you were blessed or cursed with the tendency to care a lot. Some people might see this as a weakness but what you have to remember is that us humans learn from our mistakes, so you can carry on caring about things but you'll be more wary about starting to do it in the first place, which is natural.

This is why you have honest friends and relatives who are objectionable. Just put some trust in what we tell you, take things in to consideration. If you do get in such a position again, then at least you are better prepared for it. Don't put yourself down for taking a risk in order to achieve something great.

Right? Possibly. Who can say?No comment is necessary. Sounds like you made this point better than I could have done.

I realize most of this probably doesn't make sense. But it's the sort of thing I think about. I have no idea why.Because you are a normal, brilliant and stupid person and we love you. You're not an uncaring yob. You're a kind and considerate person. I'm told they're hard to come by.

I remember your dad talking about keeping a balance between the 'higher' self and the 'drake' self in one of his podcasts. I've thought about this now and again in spare moments, and what I think it means, or my interpretation of it is that you shouldn't allow yourself to be all instinctual or all logical. You should find somewhere in the middle where you listen to what your heart and guts are telling you and try to make sense of it with your brain. Again, nothing unusual about that :)

The reason, simply put, is although it caused me no ends of stress and financial woe to do so, making Amy happy made me happy. That Amy was a selfish, self-obsessed control freak didn't help the matter either.this is a problem? there's a specific way you need to look at this, and I'm going to do my best to explain it. ok, so you're an emotional parasite. you must make other people happy in order to be happy. that means that throughout your entire life your purpose in creating friendships and varying other alliances will be to make that person or people happy to the absolute best of your abilities. you're going to strive to be the best you possibly can be and make that person the happiest they can be. if you start to become abused for this, you've proven that you will exit from that relationship.

what I'm getting from this is that you're possibly the nicest person on the friggin planet and you will continue to do so for honest reasons that are entirely selfless. you are also mature enough to realize the naivite that comes with such a mental state and therefore work around it (in this case by posting it on a forum and self-analyzing along side friends). these are 2 of the best traits, in my mind, that a person could ever ask for. don't consider them bad things.

Right? Possibly. Who can say?you're an emotional leech. that means that selfish people, stuck-up people, and ass hats are going to leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. you may not realize it right off, but once you do realize the type of person they are then you can seperate yourself from them, and doing so will be best for both of you. some guys like to give selfish girls the attention they desire. they get some kind of emotional high from doing what the girl wants regardless of what they want and so it all works out with them. most people aren't like this. let her find a guy like that and let you find a girl who suits your needs better. thats just how life works by my experience. all you can do is realize what was the problem before and move on, which you have, so you're well on your road to living a happy life.

I started fiddling around with Fruity Loops, but I noticed the sounds constantly clicks and stuff.. I think I figured it out, and it's that my headphones power on and off at the start and end of every sound. I've never really noticed it before, untill it had hundreds of short sound files to play like that. That's what I get for using USB headphones I guess. I don't want to go out and buy a new pair just so I can play around with a music program..

Why do USB headphones exist?

worMatty
23 Jan 2008, 23:46
No clue. They offer no advantages. More disadvantages. Here's why:

When you plug them in, Windows will change all your settings to point to your headphones. If you have a mic set up it will automatically switch over to your headset's mic. If you leave the 'phones plugged in, you can only use those or the speakers and if you want to switch between them you have to go in to your audio properties. Not helpful for non-techies.
The sound chips in them are usually C-Media ones. If you want high quality sound it will push up the price of the USB headset, and headsets break a lot. Better to get a decent sound card and a decent headset that will last you a long time.
Software issues in different OSs. Jack plug headsets will work as long as your sound card does, and can be used in normal audio equipment also.

If you buy one because you can plug it in to the front of your computer, you need to get a decent sound card with a front bay. You might argue that they cost more than you're is willing to pay, yet you want decent quality. Sorry, it doesn't work like that! The only advantage I can think of is that the sound is not as susceptible to RFI because it is generated in the speakers rather than travels up the wire from your sound card. But IME it's not noticeable.

AndrewTaylor
23 Jan 2008, 23:57
You can get speakers with headphones ports in. Then it's even easier than a front bay. Just unplug them and the speakers turn on again.

Vista is actually a lot more forgiving of this than previous versions of Windows. The mic on my USB head has suddenly started getting very fizzly and poppy for no discernible reason, so I've started to use my high-quality USB recordin' mic instead. Vista asked me which one I wanted to give preference to when they are both plugged in.

Why do USB headphones exist?
1) For people that need a second audio device for voice chat?

Gives you much less problems when you want to use a voice chat program (Teamspeak, Ventrilo) while playing games.
I use my Soundblaster for the surround sound in games and my on-board sound card for Teamspeak only.

2) For people with broken analog connectors in a laptop?

That's the case with my girlfriend's laptop.
Her headphone connector is broken, which results in a loose connection and lots of static.
In addition, the mechanical switch inside the connector, which turns off the built-in speakers, is broken too, so the speakers are permanently turned off.

Although, a USB device like the one depicted below is better than USB headphones with the cable permanently attached.

Gives you much less problems when you want to use a voice chat program (Teamspeak, Ventrilo) while playing games.
I use my Soundblaster for the surround sound in games and my on-board sound card for Teamspeak only.I've never been able to get both Soundblaster and on-board sound working in parallel.

My Audigy 2 ZS works perfectly fine together with the onboard RealTek AC97.

Vista only lets me pick one.

You can create som interesting effects though..

Like if you are playing music on your speakers, then turn on/plug in the USB headphones and start a game, youll game the game sounds in the headphones and music on the speakers still.

Don't use Vista then.

Really? I have two soundcards in my machine and I'm using both of them in tandem.

Windows has only ever let you pick one output soundcard. However, you can choose a Voice output, but it's up to the application to support it.

Then my Vista installation is clearly broken, then - it's quite happily letting me output on both cards at once, or assigning a specific card to a specific program, or whatever.

I've been looking for a way to do that for a while now so that I can get my surround sound on games, but my stupidly-high-quality stereo sound for music. got them plugged into 2 different sound cards, and switching back and forth bugs me.

I'd like to know that too. All I found is an option to set a soundcard as default which switches all sound output to it.

Explain.

This character limit is silly.

I don't know. it's just there, in the sound settings.

I'unno! It just does it.

Edit: Oh, apparently it's program-specific, not Vista. GoogleTalk, for example, lets me select all available sound devices while Vista... er... doesn't. My mistake.
