People seem to have this obsession with building a stable Windows. It's weird - there's almost no demand for a stable OS X despite the fact that, from my experience, it's just as crash-tacular as Windows is. A co-worker of mine has both PCs and Macs at his desk and at last check (he keeps count, because he's a dork) his mac has crashed more times than his Windows box.

I have found it to be more stable than Windows, even when running both on the same Hardware.
Windows will usually give me strange errors(both on my iMac and on PC's I've had before), stop supporting the webcam at random times, and when a program or game crashes, it will take me a while to terminate the program. After running games it also tends to become stupidly slow. On OS X I have had Safari crash a few times, but the Force Quit option does actually do it's job, unlike End Task on Windows... :p

The OS itself has crashed a total of four times, but none while doing anything important. And restarting it is a lot less of a pain than Windows, since the startup time is a lot shorter than when running WinXP.

All in all, I have personally had a much better experience with OS X than I had with Windows. Coincidence? Maybe. But I suppose the reason you don't see people wanting a more stable OS X is because in their experience, it has been much more stable than Windows.

I have this small program on my Mac called iSquint, pretty nifty, allows me to convert videos so that I can play them on my iPod.
So it gives you an estimate time for how long it'll take the video to convert, and just noticed that it appears to get it wrong some times. But at least it has the courage to admit it, changing the status to "...Looks like I lied. File n will be done when it's done."

I would assume not, as they won't have permission to view OD - same as OD threads dont' show up in search results. Easiest way to check is to log out and see if the OD threads show up then.

Steam account phishing warning..

I was just playing GTAIV and i got this message over steam.
Hi, I need your opinion, out of 10, what would you give my friends profile pic? http://steamcommunitybeta.com/profiles/76561197985824851 We're having an argument and need some help...

Paul logs out from steam 2 seconds later.

Very suspicious. But nothing bad should happen just by going to that page, riiight? So I clicked the link. Steam warned me that it wasn't the official site. I went there with firefox instead. However I could not see the profile page and was prompted to log in. At the bottom of steamcommunitybeta.com it says "This site has nothing to do with Valve Corporation and is no way affiliated with the steam trademark."

How nice of them to warn me that it was fake before I give them my account details :p

I think the idea behind that program is utter tripe. I suppose it could be entertaining for simple mortals to hear it come up with inane, simple, boring background music for their similarly inane singing, but I just loathe the idea as a whole...

I do concur that it should be slightly amusing to see what it comes up to when singing classic tunes, but the fact that it's going to be easier to stumble into crap as the one presented in that ad trough the internet makes me wonder if it's worth it...

Pretty much, yes. You have two nearly identical robots shouting "helloooo!". The only difference (apart from a slightly different configuration of limbs) is the orientation of their mouths. And yet the characters react in an entirely different way to each of them. And there isn't much else to link the two strips together. Finally, you've got the author's comment below each picture.

Heck, I'd've thought the fact that I took it entirely out of context would have made it easier to spot...

Any help would be appreciated. Any unhelp will be met with an accute case of illiteracy. Yes.

Yes, the light source in optical mouse devices are quite energy hungry. More so if it's a wireless one. Even more so if it's a cheap brand with bad or no energy saving functions.
You should buy a good Logitech mouse with NiMH batteries and a recharging station.

I've got the Logitech MX 1000 Laser Cordless, which I bought for €50, but there are already cheaper ones for around €30 (Cordless Click Plus).
That'll probably amortise after a couple of months.

EVE Online player, Xabier, has recently made off with 80 billion ISK (the in-game currency) due to hosting a bank in the game and then running off with all the money in said bank. the EVE devs had this to say:

The most recent event and one which has caused the most controversy is surrounding Xabier. First and foremost I would like to point out that it is still not known for certain whether Xabier has, for lack of a better word, scammed. What we DO know is that he has missed a dividend payment on a personal bond, and his bio now states “Thanks for all the fish”.

I think it's fair enough.

It's only a game. People should put less time into single games. People who play the same game for 12 hours a day (when they could be playing 6 games for 2 hours each) are detrimental to the games industry.

Whilst said players will feed one studio for a lifetime, hundreds of other indy studios suffer from a reduced demographic, e.g. hardcore WoW players are unlikely to buy Super Mario Galaxy, meaning the target audience is reduced by a significant amount.

So yes, I think knocking people down a virtual peg or two should give them a bit of a deserved reality check. I might start an EVE account 10 years ago and do just that.

lol, completely agreed, vader. its really their own fault for trusting a player to run a bank.

also, I found out that apparently he wasn't even the owner of the bank. he was simply promoted within his corporation and made off with the money in response to this promotion. definitely not against any rules in my book. too bad so sad and all that.

Do they have charging cradles? My MX700 and MX1000 both suffered the same fate: the contacts on both the mouse and the cradle went manky. Basically it looks to me like Logitech don't put nickel between their copper and gold plating, allowing the air to get to the copper, causing oxydisation which later appears through the gold plating. Stupid Logitech.

Luckily my MX700 takes AA batteries, unlike my super-sexy ultra-ergonomic MX1000 and it's irreplaceable Lithium Ion job.

Hmm.
I have the MX1000 too.

The only problem I have with the charging cradle is, that it will only get contact in a certain position when I slightly let it slide in. If I push it down until the casing hits the bottom, it won't charge most of the time.

I had the very same problem with my previous two Cordless Click Plus mouses, which used the same cradle, so I guess it's the flexible electrodes at the bottom that cause the fuzz.

On a side note, I exchanged the first Cordless Click Plus after six months because the middle mouse button didn't work anymore on certain positions of the wheel.
Incidentally, that coincided with the first time I used Firefox and tabbed browsing, so I guess I wore of the thing with all the middle-mouse-button-tab-closing.

Even so, a mouse chord doesn't get moved around that much. Unless you're constantly changing wires around and moving things, then the chord should experience minimal movement.

I've just read through parts of a thread somewhere, filled with people arguing that 0.999... (recurring) does not = 1.
Can people not accept mathematical proof and plain logic?

I think the main issue is here is that people don't really understand just how abstract maths is. "Yeah but it wouldn't do that in real life" is not a valid argument in mathematics. The trouble is, saying "but look we can prove it mathematically/logically" is not going to make much headway with these people, because that's just piling on further abstraction.

For example, if you say "0.9 recurring has to equal 1 because it's a limit and we know that limits work because if they didn't then the structures of analysis and calculus would fall down", they'll interpret that as "analysis and calculus are bunk".

It's frustrating, yes. But speaking as someone who's training as a maths teacher, it's hard enough getting kids to understand decimals. Here, for example, is a list of common decimal misconceptions:

"Decimals are just like a different whole number, right?" i.e. "0.16 > 0.5 because 16 > 5"

"Oh wait no, they're like reciprocals" i.e. "0.45 < 0.3 because 1/45 < 1/3"

"Any amount of hundredths you have is less than any amounth of tenths" i.e. "0.51 < 0.5 because surely 51/100 can't be bigger than 5/10, they're only hundredths!"

"0.1 is one tenth. 0.01 is one hundredth. 0.11 is eleven tenths" i.e. "Sure, 0.05 < 0.5. But 0.16 is still bigger than 0.5"

"What do you mean, they're supposed to end in "th"?" i.e. "0.165 > 0.53 because 561 > 35"

"Oh yeah, it's just like money" i.e. "I'm fine with 0.16 < 0.5, but 0.161 = 0.16 because you can't have a tenth of a penny"

So yeah. You've gotta get past all this first before you can even think about addressing recurring decimals...

Plus that justification in itself wrestles with the very idea of infinity + 1 = infinity.

The infinite series proof is fairly straight forward and clear though.
The geometric series: 9*(1/10) + 9*(1/10)^2... = 1 is hard to argue against, so long as you accept the fact that s = a/(1-r), where a = 0.9 and r = 0.1. If they don't accept that, then their problem lies in their understanding of abstract mathematics and the concept of infinity.

Which, well, yes. That's the point I've been trying to get at. If they don't understand abstract maths and the concept of infinity, they aren't going to understand 0.9999... = 1

Trouble is, we tend to teach 0.9999... = 1 before we teach abstract maths and the concept of infinity.
