And here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/3000728.stm) is an article that states, near the bottom, that Disney bought the rights to the book. Oh dear...

So... read any good books lately?
Nineteen Eighty Four. That's great. And now I'm reading the Python autobiography. It's also great, only it weighs half a stone.

I've got a song, not really in my head, but I'm thinking about it. I really need to know what it is, because i think it's great. Not entirely sure though. I don't know the title, artist, any lyrics, and i have very little idea of the age. All i know is that it sounds quite atmospheric and oriental (at least in the chorus). I could sing the chorus melody, it's quite simple. It's in 4/4 time, and they play it on Virgin Radio sometimes.

It is starting to kill me.

There's a UK service called Shazam, or something like that. You phone a number from your mobile, hold it up to the speakers while a song plays, and they text you back the artist and title.

Nineteen Eighty Four

Random fact: Nineteen Eighty Four is a rip-off of a little known book called "We". Everyone thinks that 1984 is amazingly original but in fact, "We" came first (can't remember the author's name) and contains the same ideas and basic plotline. I know this because I've read "We" and I talked to one of my college teachers about it (when I was at college) and they agreed with me.

So there you have it. Incidently, "Groundhog Day" is a rip-off of a little known film called "12:01"...

If I heard the song, I'd at least know the lyrics and could look it up. The fact is, it's hardly ever played anywhere.

Make two keyframes with the same symbol in the same position. Set one at alpha 0% and the other at alpha 100%. Then right-click the space between them on the timeline and choose "Create Motion Tween". (or set this on the Frame panel)

I read the new Terry Pratchett book, A Hat Full of Sky, recently. It's pretty good, and it has one classic character: Oswald the ondageist. A poltergeist uses psychokinetic forces to mess stuff up. An ondageist tidies everything up again. You can't see him, but you get the mental impression of a worried little man with a dustpan and brush.

WTF? What happened to the anti-double-post hack?It vanished mysteriously in mysterious circumstances.

What is an aneurysm?

An aneurysm is a dilation of a blood vessel (similar
to a balloon) that poses a risk to health from the
potential for rupture, clotting, or dissecting. Rupture
of an aneurysm in the brain causes stroke, and rupture of
an aneurysm in the abdomen causes shock. The abdominal
aortic aneurysm (AAA) is the most common, and the rest of
this discussion will focus on the AAA.

Hmm. Interesting move by Vaughan in the 30th over. Clearly he's thinking, "Well, Tresco scored a century, we'll let him have a bowl as well!"

Well... baseball... uh....

Well, it gets very violent in America. Like, fistfights break out over which team is better. In New Hamshire, it's particularly Red Sox vs. Yankees (I like sox. I mean, how random is that?), but it seems more people like Sox, and the Yankee fans are fighting an uphill battle. I mean, some of the teachers even (playfully) make fun of the Yankee-fan students. There was a lot of yelling in one class where one kid found out how to get live scores on the net and was yelling how the Red Sox drew up to a tie, then eventually beat the Yankess. And... uhh... well even this morning one kid brought like, 30 magazine snippets showing polls, and the Sox were winning every one. Although it's more of a running gag then paying homage, my cartoon charicters usually wear hats that say "Go sox". Although that was really just a threat, I don't follow baseball much, but it's nice to hear that the Sox throttle some other team violently. However, the Sox haven't won the whole enchilada since like, 1938 or something, the win like nearly every game BUT the most important one. Seriously, the fans know more then the coaches. Like, i think new hampshire moved three feet with everyone yelling at their tv to take out Pedro, but good 'ol coach didn't, so we lost. Uhhhh... yeah, that's pretty much all I have to say.

All PCs that are pre-assembled are overpriced. The cheapest ones usualy run at about +20% of the price of the parts. You have to be very carefull, however, when building your own PC. It is sometimes a good idea to take a look at one of the pre-assembled PC from one of the big companys to see which parts they use in combinations, so that you wouldn't end up buying a motherboard that doesn't run well with your CPU.

Edit: Potato cannon?I find the memory quite sufficient. That program only takes 78 bytes.

You know, that thing I posted a picture of the progress of a few pages back? A fully automatic pneumatic potato cannon. I have no idea how to do full auto mechanically, hence the use of the chip.

That's just a cut down version of BASIC. The chip is a BASIC Stamp 2 (BS2), and is designed to read a programme from an EPROM and execute it. When you buy it you can get a connecter for your PC (or Mac, probably; it's just an RS-232 serial port, and only one pin of it is used for anything) to programme it with, some software, and a board to mount it on with a breadboard so it can be linked to stepper motors, LEDs, switches, and the like. I'll see if I can dig up my old Electronics notes on the subject.

Edit: Can't find them. Sorry.

Actually it's the BASIC Stamp 1.

Had to get both the carrier board AND serial adapter. *grumble* Why can't they make those one unit?

Edit: And the serial adapter does NOT wieght a pound like it says. A quarter of an ounce, if even that.

Anyway, i was (oddly) sitting on 657 when I came back a few days ago and noticed all this 666 buisness. I didnt delete any posts.

I'm not going to keep it long, Vader deserves his fame. I'm happy that I'm atleast still the permanent newbie of this forum (and this forum's inventor of using avatars to fake a status).

I'm thinking of starting my own column, so I would appreciate some views on this "pilot column" I've typed...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Call that a hill? That's a hill! (09.05.2004)

I am in an annoying situation.

I wanted to start this column with the words "As regular readers will know...". The problem is that this is my first column: there therefore are no regular readers - or at least not yet. Maybe I should have saved this column up for later on, when (or if) I posess regular readers. But given that this is one of the few good ideas I've had for a column as of yet, I may as well start with it.

So, as regular readers would know if such regular readers existed, I have lived most of my life (14 years and holding) in Swansea, South Wales. Wales, as even non-regular readers should know, is a very mountainous country. Although Swansea doesn't posess mountains as such (it may do; I'll have to look this up), what it does have in abundance is hills. In fact, with its habit of producing rainy, misty fog and wind, Swansea could easily be the San Francisco of Britain. Pretty much anywhere in Swansea, everywhere you go you will either be on a hill or looking at one (sometimes both).

Now, let us compare this with the city of Cambridge, where I am currently at University. Cambridge is in the middle of the Fens, which are notoriously flat. If Swansea is San Francisco, Cambridge and its surrounding environs are probably Iowa. This is not to say that it is not a nice place - I love walking on the flat because there's less wondering when the torture will end and more scenery appreciation. Cambridge has abundant flora and fauna, and it's excellent being able to stand still for a while and (as I did yesterday) see a mother mallard with her ducklings, or watch a moorhen or two strut awkwardly about, with their cries reminscent as much as anything of the sound a clown's hooter being squeezed.

No, I like Cambridge fine, it's a wonderfully scenic city and a joy to walk around. What gets me is the rather optimistic names some of the streets have. As a case in point, let us take the small cobbled street known as Honey Hill.

I am a mathematician rather than a surveyor, and I wouldn't know how to use a theodolyte even if I owned one, but I estimate that Honey Hill can be no more than 15 feet higher than the surrounding land. Right. Every time I see that road sign, I so much want to do a Crocodile Dundee: "Call that a hill? That's a hill!". It wouldn't really work of course, because I can't borrow a hill from Swansea and take it to Cambridge with me. But it would be nice, and if I took the hill where I live, maybe I could get Mum to do my washing for me.

A hill is something you half-die trying to climb (bear in mind I'm not particularly fit), not something you can climb without breaking a sweat. Drumau Hill, the hill I live on at home, is, according to something I've just looked up on the Internet, 272 metres (884 feet) high from sea-level. That's a hill (Mountains begin at approx 308 metres [1000 feet], by the way).

Now how can I conclude this nicely. Ah, yes: Cambridge is a great city to walk in (bar the traffic) and it has some lovely scenery, but it shouldn't pretend to have things it doesn't.

So I'm plaing Mega Man Battle Network 2. And there's this PoisMask S chip I really need so I can trade it with this kid, right? But the virus that gives it to you is tough to come by and often appears in conjunction with other viruses and you're not even too likely to get the chip, which is ironic because it's not even very good. But anyway, I must've spent at least an hour last night running in a circle and beating viruses, and I got literally 8 useless PoisMask W chips. So I quit for the night. And now I just started the game this morning, and the FIRST virus I found was the one I needed and in the very FIRST fight I fought today, I got the PoisMask S chip. And I was all, like, HOYL SIHT OFMEG and stuff. It was cool.

Well, it's not all that difficult to counsel me. I'm surprised so many sudden mood swings over the years haven't broken my neck. :pYeah, well I'm an emotional rock most of the time, something that perpetually annoys at least one friend and (I guess) was partially responsible for me losing my first attempt at a proper girlfriend. I get sad but never depressed, worried but never angsty, annoyed and angry but never for long periods. How I've managed to get almost all the way through my teenage years without this occurring, I don't know. Maybe I'll pay for it with a giant mid-life crisis, but meh. Let's not turn this into another Teenagerism.

On another topic (but still amusingly with the word "teenage" involved): the Teenage Mutant Ninja/Hero Turtles! How about 'em! That was a good series.

One of them's paralyzed at the waist, though.Funnily enough, although I enjoyed the TV show, I only got two models (Leonardo and Donatello): most of my action figures were Ghostbusters and Transformers (ironically, I didn't watch Ghostbusters as much and I don't think I ever watched Transformers).

What really annoyed me about Transformers though, was that I really wanted Optimus Prime. So one birthday my parents (although I don't blame them, in fact it may partly have been my fault) bought me the stupid action figure one that couldn't transform. Surely that's the lamest toy ever...

Dammit, now I won't get the 4000th post. Ah well, I might get the 4000th reply.
