does mac make a tablet laptop? I'm looking into an art college and the one I found mentioned the need for a laptop and that they have a deal with apple to provide a discount. as you guys know I don't have a mac. in fact, I know nothing about macs, so I ask those who do. does such a thing exist?

We were talking about the second most expensive laptop you could get from them.
Their cheapest, factory-fresh laptop is $1100, which is still a lot, I suppose. They last through pretty much anything, though. Every Mac my family has owned still works, which was why I was so surprised when this Macbook's harddrive failed. At least I got it replaced for free.

Okay, I went and made a .php script that would rotate my avatar on every reload, but then I noticed that it won't work because all of the avatars are actually uploaded onto Team17's server and used from there.

That seems like a waste of bandwidth. We should be able to load up the avatars from imageshack to give the forum a load off. The IMG tag was implemented because of that, right? Why not avatars? Meh. I just want to be special with my rotating pictures. :p

Rotating avatars remove the whole point of having avatars. How am I supposed to recognise people if their face changes every time I see them?

A small change here and there is fine, but that's not what would happen -- it's not what your script does, for example.

But if they're not uploaded onto the forum server, how would the forum know how big each avatar is? It'd have to pre-load them itself before delivering them to you, thus essentially resulting in each avatar being loaded twice, ever time a page is viewed.

Well, you're basically made of water and the amount you sweat, excrete and exhale (and more), I can see how two wouldn't cut it. But I would check before endorsing a figure, since most well-known dietary advice is made up by celebrity quacks.

The fact is that you eat almost all of the water your body uses anyway.

Woo, ripples!

On an unrelated note, I've been thinking of buying a new tablet, for two reasons. One is that I need a larger one, because with the one I have now I have to set the drawing area to a very small portion of the screen otherwise whatever I draw ends up all shaky. :P

And the other, more important reason is that when I'm under MacOS X the thing hiccups a lot when I'm making several consecutive strokes... which is incredibly annoying. The odd thing is that this does not happen at all when I switch to Windows XP, but I'm seriously tired of having to restart to XP whenever I want to draw something...

But it worries me that I'll have the same issue if I buy a new tablet...

This is the tablet I have right now: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3106/2478062061_0a2b837461.jpg?v=0

Yes, but I rarely find myself wanting to drink 2 litres a day (unless I'm doing a lot of exercise). I'm not sure how much water I take in through food, but 8 litres seems a lot in total.
Just looking at the Wikipedia, it mentions something about 3.7 litres including water in food being recommended.

8 pints is either 3.75 litres or 4.54 litres depending whether you're American or use proper pints.

Just looking at the Wikipedia, it mentions something about 3.7 litres including water in food being recommended.the research I heard (on the radio for the record, so I don't actually have a link or anything) simply said that when you're thirsty you need to drink something. some people will likely have gotten into the habit of ignoring their thirst and so those are the ones who the "drink __ glasses a day" rule was made for, but if you're really looking to help yourself, just pay attention and grab some water when you're feeling thirsty.

Alien King
3 Sep 2008, 14:42
Yeah, but I'm not sure how your post actually links to the fact that I was doubting it being 8 litres. Apart from the fact thirst is obviously linked to water.

8 Litres is a huge amount of water to be taking in.

8 pints is either 3.75 litres or 4.54 litres depending whether you're American or use proper pints.

Which ties in pretty much what I read earlier. So I'll just assume Paul got the unit wrong.

But I'm not sure I could bear to lose all those wonderful swearfilters for nonregistered users. It wouldn't be the same without "what the gently caress".

They have just watched too many bad sci-fi movies...

The only reasonable thing I think could happen is that some scientist gets rendered invisible but also crazy.
He then gets out of the CERN labs and starts eating diplomats' heads at the Geneva UN compound!

I'm not sure they do. Most are just making fun of it. Others are questioning why we are taking the risk, even if it is a 1 in a million chance or less.

There's always an exception though: http://www.stuff.co.nz/4690263a12.html

Perhaps some Hindu rebirth thing?
If you're sucked into a black hole and pop out in another dimension you can't get reborn because the Gods are still in the old dimension.
Although, where does she think she'll be reborn on if the Earth gets sucked away?
Also, it's questionable if you get reborn after a suicide.

________Black hole______no black hole

Suicide____no rebirth_____rebirth??

Live______no rebirth_____life, yay! +rebirth later

If she really believed in the black hole occuring, then she'd be doomed anyway.
Logically, suicide would be useless and she should have rather hoped for no black hole to occur.

I may have spelt the Welsh word for weather wrong, I dunno. It's been a while.

EDIT: Yeah, sorry, the Welsh word for weather is "tywydd", not "tawedd". Darn phonetics.

William Hill gave 10,000/1 odds on the LHC destroying the world on start-up day, and have made £500,000 out of it. There's a lot of stupid people. Once you get past the fact they think LHC can destroy the world, and that they think it can do this on start-up day even though no particle collisions happen for a few weeks yet, How do they expect to collect if they do win?

Find two and you can use them for data encryption.

The point is rarely as clear as it seems. Many major discoveries in maths and science -- maybe even most of them -- are made by accident. But you have to research something to find anything. As long as 'blue-sky' research is done, it will turn up useful and interesting results periodically.

Finding large primes is probably more use as a tool for other researchers than anything else.

(incidentally, having a new largest Mersenne Prime also means we have a new largest perfect number: (2^43,112,609 - 1)*(2^43,112,608). Perfect numbers are entirely useless, just so you know. And it's awesome).
