x^2(2+3x) - 5 = 0

so x = 1

There's still a "jump" here though. I mean, I can tell by looking at it what the answer is, but I could do that right after substitution too (at 3x^3+2x^2-5=0). Thanks anyway.

Well, if the answers are that simple then it has to factor. You know from your calculator that x = 1 is in the solutions, so "try" long dividing 3x^3+2x^2+0x-5 by (x-1). I'll bet the other two roots are complex, but that's not the issue as long as you show that they're complex and therefore not of interest. And once you have x, y is a walk in the park.

Oh, why didn't I just do this, huh. Thanks!

I love how much math is involved in figuring out the answer to that problem when both equations equal 1 at first glance and that essentially turns out to be the answer.

and yes, yes, I understand the need to be sure and such as other answers may be present given the original question asked, it just amuses me :p

I love how much math is involved in figuring out the answer to that problem when both equations equal 1 at first glance and that essentially turns out to be the answer.Yeah, but the question isn't "work out these specific equations whatever way you like" (if it was, then Pikkul's calculated answer would be acceptable), it's "use some general methods for solving these specific equations, but we're giving you nice numbers to make the calculations straightforward".

I understand, it just amuses me that so much work went into discovering the apparent answer was correct :p

I just noticed on my tip box in the lab (basically an empty tub that used to contain some compound), it says that the purity is 99.9% - 100.1%

It left me wondering, how could a chemical be over 100% purity (for that matter, anything)?

Simple - the purity needs to be within tolerances, and those tolerances are 100% ± 0.1. The average purity is probably 100%.

I don't have one to hand, but do you mean when they put "Made using Xg amount of tomatoes per Xg of product"?

You mean "Made using Xg of tomatoes per Yg of product", where X > Y.

The average purity is probably 100%.

How can the average be 100% unless every sample they test is 100% too? For every sample under 100, there would need be one over, which doesn't work. I do agree though that they probably meant 100% ± 0.1 which makes sense, and they probably should have written it as such.

thomasp
18 Nov 2008, 00:17
I have no idea what I meant by that comment :p

They probably wrote it as 99.9% - 100.1% because they couldn't find the ± key/symbol :p

Yes, but I used capital X instead of lowercase, which in my world doesn't donate the letter x used in maths :p

so, due to maintainence on dA I found a section of dA that I'd missed. it was simply an announcements page and looking at it listed something called the LOL corner. I figured "oh what the hell, 20 minutes till my food is done, no reason to play L4D yet. may as well see if it's any good". well apparently some of these quotes are abso-friggin-lutely hilarious. you guys should check it out http://news.deviantart.com/article/62641/

but the reason I'm here is to quote one that I couldn't NOT share. I pity this kid:

<Kungfugenius> so a guy i work with named his kid Attila
<Kungfugenius> which is fine...but then i found out his last name is Hunt
<Kungfugenius> Attila Hunt
<As-Death-Becomes-Her> Kungfugenius:
<Kungfugenius> but it gets even better
<Kungfugenius> cuz his middle name is Daniel
<Kungfugenius> so his name is Attila D. Hunt
<Kungfugenius>
<As-Death-Becomes-Her> Kungfugenius: Joe...please tell me you're kidding
<As-Death-Becomes-Her> BAHAHAHAHAHAH
* As-Death-Becomes-Her is laughing so hard
<Kungfugenius> sadly im not

I'm genuinely impressed at these wonderful new skins and at Google's will to do things like this. Why not make email more fun and enjoyable? It's like employing someone to look after a garden. One might consider it pointless but in a way it's necessary to keep the house looking alive and loved.

Some of those skins take in to account your location and the time of day, and change to reflect that and the climate in your area. I admire the photographic themes; they really lend a professional edge to the GMail application.

One might consider it pointless but in a way it's necessary to keep the house looking alive and loved.http://www.incredimail.com/

I'm not saying it hasn't been done before. Incredimail came out with that premise initially but is used by tits who like to use far too many emoticons. GMail is something we already had that became more fun and enjoyable without us asking it to be, but it's not as horrid to use or as offensive to recipients as Incredimail. I commented on the fact Google took time to do what they did and I defended their decision to do so against not doing so. Google's design principles haven't been compromised by the introduction of themes - the client is still simple and nice to use, without slowing down the user.

Neither, really. It's just really, really annoying that someone would dedicate that much time and brainpower into something so obnoxiously pointless. They could be doing so much with their lives. But they're doing that.

Although I don't actually own them, I doubt you can go wrong with any of the models by these manufacturers:

http://www.gradolabs.com/frameset_main.htm

http://www.plantronics.com/europe_union/en_GB/products/computer

http://www.sennheiser.co.uk/uk/icm.nsf/root/products_sennheiser_headphones

The main concern with them is whether or not you, or the people buying you gifts, are prepared to shell out as much for headphones, but all three still sell older models that shouldn't be that pricey anymore. And of course, it's always a good idea to try headphones out yourself before buying them, though I guess that could be hard with the looming deadline (http://pbfcomics.com/?cid=PBF032-Todays_My_Birthday.gif)...

Edit: While I'm linking to comics, might as well wish those whom it may concern a delicious Thanksgiving (http://truckbearingkibble.com/comic/2008/11/26/the-night-baster/).

do you want headphones that are actively noise cancelling, or just closed (thereby blocking out a lot of sound)? if you just need closed cans, the hd 280s (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280-Pro-Professional/dp/B000065BPB/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227828818&sr=8-1) are apparently quite good, or the hd 202s (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-202-Headphones/dp/B000065BP9/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227828818&sr=8-6) if you're at a lower price point

I'm quite miffed that they include "gay/lesbian" as one of their criteria. It's like that's seriously the worst thing their children could be exposed to. Heaven forbid their kids aren't as bigoted as themselves...

Seriously, the reason prop 8 passed in California is because of crazy TV adverts that claimed that if prop 8 didn't pass then children would learn in school that homosexuality is OK. I wanted to throw my television out the window every time. The proposition simply inserted one line into the constitution which said only heterosexual marriage would be recognized. It does nothing to education, and teachers can no less say that being gay is OK than they could before. But people freaked out, and considering the low voter turnout around here, if you can actually rally up your base to vote on something, you win, no matter what the actual population believes.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Protester Richard Claxton, who was d-locked to the fencing at the time, said, "I was terrified: you don't expect to be attacked with a snowplough on a peaceful protest."

A bit of background...

Plane Stupid are a group of idiots who are, well, plain stupid who do things like break through airport perimeter fences and run across runways or set up blockades on airport taxiways in an attempt to protest about air travel being a pollutant. Running onto active runways when a jet is landing is quite stupid.

This morning they set up camp around a load of chain-link fences at Stansted Airport (my local airport). BAA, the airport's current owners decided to take action against the - with a snowplough. The runway was closed at the time for maintenance, since it was 3am.

I just find that quote quite funny...

It's such a shame the British Police give criminals too many rights. They should have just got the fire trucks and hosed them off the runway. Stansted's fire trucks are capable of turning over a 737 with their water cannons, so they should at least be able to shoot the protesters into Hertfordshire :p

bonz
8 Dec 2008, 14:07
IIRC, on Vienna International Airport there is a cheetah or leopard patrolling the perimeter fences to scare off/hunt down birds, so they don't get sucked into the engines.
They should introduce some feline predator like that in Stansted too, except leave out the animal keeper. :)

Alternatively, let those idiots onto the runway and have them blown away by the jet blast.
That'll save some water at least.

thomasp
8 Dec 2008, 17:09
Somehow I think the locals would object to a cheetah/leopard patrolling the perimeter more than they object to the proposed second runway (which is going pretty much halfway between the airport and my house )

I should like to add that in a straight line I am 8 miles from the airport.

And, said new runway if built will barely be used, since the biggest airline at Stansted (Ryanair) will pull out if their landing fees go up, which they will to pay for the new runway.

Paul.Power

I can't help but feel that Plane Stupid have a point, even if their style of protestation leaves something to be desired.

thomasp
8 Dec 2008, 18:40
Air travel only accounts for 2% of the UK's annual CO2 output and 3% of the global CO2 output. Granted air travel is set to increase over the years but engine and airframe technology is seeing reductions in CO2 emissions. I really don't see the point in targeting such a small percentage of the world's pollution.

The current shorthaul flights (particularly inter-UK) aren't the most efficient methods of transportation, but next generation engines will see to that. However, if you need to travel long distances (over about 300 - 500 miles), by far the most efficient method of transport is the aircraft.

And for the record, I am totally against the expansion at Stansted Airport, but that wasn't specifically what Plane Stupid were protesting about, they were just protesting about climate change due to aviation. And they probably contributed more CO2 to the atmosphere than they "saved" by grounding those flights, since the planes would have flown off empty later in the day so they could be repositioned and the schedules not too badly disrupted.

You need to factor in just how stupid people are though. For example this whole palava over MMR, GM crops, and plastic bags. GM crops are fantastic tools but unfortunately scaremongering has probably put that back another decade or two. Selective breeding is arguably more dangerous than GM crops. People seem to have got it into their heads that crops are natural plants and that they are extremely well adapted for survival and that they want us to eat them. To the contrary, they are extremely poor plants (which is why you only really see them in fields). They have been aggressively bred to give bigger seeds, less branching etc. Regulation is now ridiculously high - the dangers of GM are actually extremely low and the benefits are extremely high. Places like the USA and Argentina are controlling things sensibly (yes, I did say the USA were doing something sensible). People seem to treat crops like wild plants - they are nothing of the sort. People also seem to think that the countryside is beautiful because of the fields. Fields are what destroy the environment.

The same really goes for MMR - scaremongering. As for plastic bags - yes, they are unpleasant to see, but as they are effectively inert, they don't do much damage at all to the environment. Instead people have jumped on the bandwagon that plastic bags are evil. They don't damage the environment, but unfortunately the public base everything on what they can see.

I've come to despise the way things like this are controlled by public feelings, often brought about through the media, when they have little knowledge of the facts involved. Decisions should be made by those who have knowledge of what the decision is about.

I also hate how there seems to be a new craze to be a pseudo-scientist. Such as programmes like The One Show. There was a survey they did a while ago with 12 people divided into 2*6. 6 were told to make a decision on a car instantly (which as cheapest, or something), the other 6 were given more time. Anyway, 2 out of 6 in the first group got it right. 3 out of 6 in the second group got it right. Therefore they concluded that you should have spontaneous decisions. It's ridiculous. What happened to common sense, and why do people claim to know everything about anything, like global warming, or obesity. A lot of people think it's just 'you're fat because you eat too much'. There are tons of factors involved like gut bacteria, genes, diet, exercise. It's not as simple as eating over the RDA. I have a fast metabolism and probably eat more every day than the RDA says I should. Hell, if I ate 2000 kCal of laxtives each day a week I'm sure I wouldn't put on much weight.

I dispair, I honestly do.

Aviation should surely be the last fossil fuel based form of transportation, as it'll be near impossible in the nearer future to switch to an alternative, environmental-friendlier form of propulsion.

Land and sea-based transportation on the other hand could be easily switched to something else even today.
Reducing individual transport while enhancing public transport and forcing the car industry to drastically reducing CO2 output and eventually stopping it altogether.

I'm also totally for a revival of nuclear power as a transitional solution for the switch to cleaner forms of power production (solar, wind, water, geothermal), if it can stop fossil power plants.

Ethanol based propulsion systems are bad too, as they kill the food production in poor countries where the production has been outsourced.
Fully electric and fuel-cell based propulsion is the only feasible solution at the moment.

BTW, I think I recall that we had this discussion before...
Somehow I think the locals would object to a cheetah/leopard patrolling the perimeter
The cheetah would of course patrol within the perimeter fences.

BTL fuels are being looked at quite intensively - biomass is converted using the Fisher-Tropsch process and this gives what is essentially a synthetic kerosene that has better properties than the current Jet-A1

Airbus have already flown an A380 on a 100% blend of GTL - gas to liquid. Basically the same as BTL but it uses natural gas instead (which is unfortunately a fossil fuel :p)

Hydrogen and biofuel/biodiesel are totally unfeasible for aviation and most likely will be for a good many decades.

I'm also totally for a revival of nuclear power as a transitional solution for the switch to cleaner forms of power production (solar, wind, water, geothermal), if it can stop fossil power plants.

Nuclear aircraft?

Ethanol based propulsion systems are bad too, as they kill the food production in poor countries where the production has been outsourced.

Here's an interesting stat: to run the American-based domestic air fleet (so no longhaul flights, just inter-USA flights) for one year using a biofuel/jet-A1 mix that is 15% biofuel and 85% Jet-A1 would require an area the size of Florida to grow the biofuel.

Fully electric and fuel-cell based propulsion is the only feasible solution at the moment.

Boeing have done that with a light aircraft. It runs on hydrogen fuel cells. Currently fuel cells and electricity only seem feasible for light aircraft.

BTW, I think I recall that we had this discussion before...

Have we?

The cheetah would of course patrol within the perimeter fences.

But engine manufactuers only test for bird ingestion tests, not cheetah ingestion tests :p

Edit:

If anyone's interested, I've just written a report on CO2 reduction from aircraft engines. I could upload it if anyone's interested.

I think all the food-based ethanol has given ethanol a bad name. Yes, making fuel from food is terrible, but there is an alternative method for making ethanol called Cellulosic Ethanol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellulosic_ethanol) which is when you make ethanol from cellulose. Which basically means you get fuel from the corn STALKS, and grass clippings, etc. Things we don't eat - things we normally waste. (compost prices might rise a bit, sadly, but it's not as bad as food prices IMO)

Also I think hydrogen fuel cells are a bit of a waste. We currently get hydrogen from fossil fuels, and even if we did produce it from electricity, it's so much easier to put the electricity through a wire and put it in your car than to convert it to hydrogen and then truck it around. We already have the infrastructure for electricity. And so instead of trying to find a better way to produce hydrogen, why don't we just try and find a better battery.

I'm all for plug-in hybrids that use cellulosic ethanol as their backup, which will allow us a smooth transition into all-electric vehicles. The big difficulty is with big rig trucks and aircraft. And rail can take some of the weight off those, so to speak.

The most hilarious:

Which basically means you get fuel from the corn STALKS, and grass clippings, etc. Things we don't eat - things we normally waste.
But things our livestock eats.
Fuel from biomass just won't work in the dimensions we need it. Simply not enough caloric value per volume/mass.
We currently get hydrogen from fossil fuels, and even if we did produce it from electricity
Of course, hydrogen only makes sense if the energy to produce it is made from non-fossil fuels. Geothermal energy in countries like Iceland with its volcanic activity and many geysers is likely to work best.
it's so much easier to put the electricity through a wire and put it in your car than to convert it to hydrogen and then truck it around. We already have the infrastructure for electricity.
Yes, wires already work well in more densely populated regions. Just look at the railroad, subways, tram ways and trolley-buses.
And so instead of trying to find a better way to produce hydrogen, why don't we just try and find a better battery.
The energy density in a battery is much less than a fuel cell with a compressed hydrogen tank.
The big difficulty is with big rig trucks and aircraft.
Big vehicles can more easily carry their own fuel cells. Aircraft and spacecraft are really the only real difficulties.

I think maglev trains will make a comeback to substitute the railway. Probably in low-pressure tubes.

I mean, it would still need to be fixed shortly there-after, but we'd have plenty of wiggle room after cutting down THAT much pollution. enough to research solutions to what fossil-fuel-using vehicles remain at least.

Apparently some companies are looking into Nuclear Aircraft to enter into service by 2050. To be honest, I don't think that'll ever happen due to public acceptance. We're more likely to see open rotor unducted fans before we see nuclear aircraft.

Also, batteries & hybrid cars are a bit of a dodgy area. According to research the Toyota Prius is more polluting and more environmentally dangerous to the environment over its lifespan (so from obtaining the raw materials to make the car to scrapping the car) than a Land Rover Discovery. Bearing in mind one is an apparent tree-hugging baby fox-kissing hybrid and the other is a 3 tonne 4x4.

I've heard that before, and I don't buy it. Considering all the crack-pots that claim Einstein was wrong, or who have their ways to break the 2nd law of thermodynamics, I want to see a really good paper on the subject, and I haven't found one. It's like the Plane Stupid people you were criticizing earlier - they make outrageous claims, and you don't even know how to respond.

Maybe if you use the car for a week before you wreck it... Or if you dump the batteries into a creek. But people forget that batteries are for the large part recyclable and can be handled properly. And given the vaste amount of energy that a car uses in its lifetime.

The only thing people really have to say is that the Nickel plant in Ontario is terrible for the surrounding environment. And then they cite that parts are shipped all over the world. Well welcome to our world, where everything you buy and probably a good portion of your food comes from overseas too. I've never seen anyone bring up the long-term environmental ups of the Prius, the fact that even if it's more polluting to make it saves energy over its lifespan, etc. They say it takes more to make, and that's where they all seem to end.

It's like the people who diss on recycling and say that it costs more to recycle, and somehow equate that with being bad for the environment. People also talk about how it's polluting because you have to transport all the recyclable materials. They say that it's bad because we have to transport the paper all the way to a recycler, and then we have to turn it into pulp, and then form that into new paper, and then ship it again to sell it. Well, consider fresh paper - you grow the tree, cut it down, all requiring energy, transport it, mill it into paper, transport it to stores, and people buy it. Then they take the trash, and transport that to a landfill across the country or in a different country for that matter. If you look at the transportation, it's pretty much the same amount both ways, it's just that instead of cutting down a tree, transporting it, and turning it into pulp you take paper, transport it, and turn it into pulp, and all the steps after that are the same.

Because of the economic downturn, not as many ships from China are coming over here. Which means not as many are going back. Therefore we aren't sending them a lot of recycling, so it's building up here and councils don't know what to do with it.

With many small recycling plants spread over the country, instead of a few large ones, mostly in a distant country where labour is cheaper.

Particularly in the aviation industry, it's not the "here and now" pollution that is of concern, it's the "life cycle" pollution - so the pollution from the day the materials are mined for the aircraft to the day they finish scrapping it.

For example, gas and biomass to liquid fuel emits less CO2 than Kerosene when burnt, but they have a very carbon-heavy manufacturing process that emits a lot of CO2. However, despite the same manufacturing and combustion process for GTL and BTL, BTL has a net lower CO2 output over the fuel's lifespan (from a gas/plant to a fuel then to products of combustion) than GTL since the biomass absorbs carbon dioxide while it's growing.

If you don't intend to type much on that laptop (which I guess you don't have in mind with a tablet computer), you could get one of those foldable rubber keyboards.
When storing the laptop in a bag - and I suppose you have or will get one where you can open a flap and leave the laptop inside - you could put the soft rubber keyboard on top of the display and save space while not damaging the display and even protect it some more.

Not oxygen-free at all!
At a refreshing pool temperature of 20°C, there will be 7.6 mg/l of Oxygen dissolved in water.

Not to mention all the oxygen atoms in the water molecules.

has my position as top team17 macloser been usurped??
I hate the touchpad mouse on pretty much every MacBook ever invented, and the one on the newest MacBook (Michelle has one) is probably the worst one so far. I can't stand it.

and i hate the trackpad on every pc ever, so i guess we're even! ho ho ho

I think you're the first person I've ever heard say that :p Although I do tend to find some Windows-based laptops have rather unsensitive trackpads..

There's a setting for that, but I find everyone turns it down while I turn it all the way up. Drives other people crazy though.

I really dislike how the touchpad on my my HP Pavilion laptop feels. I think it has to do with it's friction and texture rather than the responsiveness. I just feel very annoyed whenever I use it.

It already uses WINE's codebase. :p

So I found out after a bit of reading. Still don't see the point, it relies heavily on WINE, which isn't finished, and is trying to re-write Windows' core with a handful of people when the original was written by teams of paid people. WINE is far more realistic, the OS it runs on is mature and it's 'only' got to provide the windows API, not the whole kernel too.

The idea is a worthy one, just a bit un-realistic.

Seems to me that pushing Linux is far more sensible.

Large chunks of Windows are arcane, secret, and/or proprietary. If they manage it they will be sued and I wouldn't like to call that result. Besides which, I don't see what it will achieve. We have Windows: it's called Windows.
