I didn't build that sail like I was planning to - that's the sail my dad bought for his sailboat. Just in case you thought I'd made it like I'd been saying I would.

Is that you?
Yeah.

Do you do a lot of building projects like this? Also, how does it run?

My friend is actually trying to build a sailboat from scratch, without any instructions.

My friend is actually trying to build a sailboat from scratch, without any instructions.
Yeah. I've built a stationary hovercraft, 3 potato cannons (a handgun, a shoulder cannon, and a fully automatic which doesn't work too well) and some other stuff that I can't think of. Next up: Potato Howitzer - black powder potato cannon with a cart and everything. Not very big though. And a long fuse, so you can light it and RUN! And then I'll finally get to Hovercraft Mk II, I promise...:p

I haven't tested it out in real wind yet, so I don't really know how well it works. The steering seems to work well. And, without me on it, the light breeze managed to get it moving at a slow speed, so at least it's capable of moving. In a good wind it should work fairly well, I think.

I think you can build a sailboat without instructions - I didn't have instructions when I built this thing. Although I did look at other landsailers for the basic design, I assume your friend is doing the same with his sailboat. (I never make things from instructions - it bugs me because someone else has already made it, so why bother? Maybe I'm just weird.)

The Internet is showing me more and more how people simply have far too much free time. Also, the new "in" thing to do seems to be to get everything to run on mobile devices: Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, Apple iPod and now get this, TI graphics calculators:
http://hardware.slashdot.org/hardware/05/08/21/1810245.shtml?tid=200&tid=137

Sure it's cool to get a movie to play on a calculator, but what's the bloody point?!? It's all just black and white pixels so you can't figure out much.

SupSuper

Iirc the TI-89 has 3d support, which would explain the "awesome games", and someone made a MIDI player for it once so I suppose it has sound too. I'd buy one but they're not accepted in high school due to "being too good".
Though all the other calculators support sound too, if you plug in headphones to the Link port and a program sends stuff through it, it sounds like a PC speaker.

Yup, it had 3d support, but I only played like, one 3d game in it.
I'm lucky that they didn't knew much about this calculators at my school, I remember I would just write down all the theory from maths and physics in my calc and use it on exams :p

I should have gotten an 89, but my parents got an 84+ Silver instead... :( Maybe I'll just purchase an 89 with my own money next year and give (or sell) the 84+ Silver to someone.

Brian: I should put that **** on my website
Brian: it's uploading
Brian: it'll be done in a few minutes
(Note: that isn't his actual screenname, I chose not to to reveal it. If you want it, hunt it down yourself. :p)

I'm a bit confused.

If x bits = 2^x, then 32-bit should be 4 294 967 296, right? But then, how come 32-bit colour is 256^3 = 16 777 216, which would be 24-bit?

AndrewTaylor
25 Aug 2005, 17:29
32 bit colour is a myth. You can have 32 bit image files, that contain 4 8-bit channels (RGBA) or you can have 32-bit screen resolution that stores 24-bit values in a 32-bit buffer because 32-bit processors like working with 32-bit registers and it runs faster but uses more memory.

I'm not sure if this is the case in C++ as well, but to print the apostrophe, you have to use this escape sequence in C:\'

That, and you'd have to type %% to get %. At least with C's printf function.

Here's my most advanced program so far, it's a calculator (reverse Polish, not infix) and would be crass to insert here what with the "ONYL OEN SPAYS @ A TIEM" rule.

Was there another one aside from that?Originally there were two Open Discussions, a Team 17 OD and a Worms OD. The Team 17 OD essentially functioned as today's OD when it was still around. It was the site of the first "What's The BEST Cereal?" thread.

Then, the Team 17 OD got deleted, without any of the threads being spared alas, and the Worms OD became the principal OD for a short while (so that's the old OD, whereas the Team 17 OD was the old OLD OD), before it split into Games Discussion and Related Discussion. Related Discussion died when the new, secret OD was established.

How can people be so stupid? I've seen 2 things (onw on a website, one in today's newspaper) asking for donations to help those hit by hurricane katrina. What's the point in handing money to America when they have the money to deal with it anyway. It's just a complete waste of money, which you might as well spend donating to Africa, which actually needs money.

Well, the need is that America isn't doing very much. It should bloody well foot the bill itself; the decision you have to make is: is it worth trying to save some people now if it won't change America's attitude? And the answer is no, because there are lots of other people out there who can be saved far more cheaply.

The whole thing is a shambles. The streets (such as remain) have descended into anarchy -- I realise it only takes a few people to spark that, but if those people weren't armed to the teeth with machine guns I suspect it wouldn't happen nearly so quickly. The aid workers daren't deliver aid because they'll be shot at by said nutters, so nothing very much is happening to save anybody.

And you know what caused this? A flood. A flood, caused by a hurricane they knew was coming days in advance. A flood that flooded a city that was several feet beneath sea-level anyway. This is not an unpredicatable disaster. This is something that should have been expected years in advance. Contingency plans should have been in place. Frankly it was a ****ing stupid place to build a city in the first place, a giant basin slightly below sea-level. They should have handled the evacuation properly when they had the chance -- laid on some buses and set up a system to control the flow of private cars out of the city so the buses weren't held up by everyone in the city trying to drive at once. And they shouldn't all have guns, either. Aside from everything else, legalised firearms leads to gun shops everywhere, and that's like an invitation to go looting, especially when everyone else has a gun. And I hear a lot of deputies quit and went home halfway through the crisis. You try to pull that kind of stunt in the military and you'd be shot for your troubles, and it would serve you right, as well.

The situation in the New Orleans is horrible, but I agree with you AT. The government was so f***ing organized. They send all these people to some giant stadium and don't even bother to supply it with enough food and water. Also, people have been predicting this would happen for your years. New Orleans tried to get bills to strengthen their flood control system but congress denied the bills. Another thing that I find is retarded is that Bush was on vacation for the first few days of this whole ordeal. If he declares something a state of emergency then why is he going on a holiday!?

SomePerson
3 Sep 2005, 17:56
Wasn't it the French who built the city where it is?

But yeah, our government is incompetant. I mean, even with that Russian sub ordeal, we got there before the Britts, but we did nothing. And then Britain gets there and immediately gets in the water and saves the Russians.

Star Worms
4 Sep 2005, 09:31
Even if the french did, it's the americans who decided to still live there.

I was surprised the government hasn't paid bus/train/whatever companies to make journeys free out of the area the hurricane would hit. The people left behind were the elderly in nursing homes and the poor who didn't have a car. Donating to help the victims won't help them at all because the government has plenty of money to deal with it. The only reason for donating after a disaster in a country is because they need the money to keep the people alive. If they already have the money to deal with the situation then donating is completely pointless.

And it wasn't because of that, it was because they were demanding the dubbing company to hire only people who were in some actors association(don't remember the name). The company had already signed a contract in which it was stablished they would only hire people from such association, but sometime last year they started hiring people who weren't in this association (with no experience in the job) for secondary characters in most of the seires.
They went on a strike, and the company just hired other people.
I'm on the actor's side on this one, they hardly get payed any good, and that contract was to assure jobs to people who've been doing this for a while now.

Sounds almost the same as One Fish Two Fish Blue Fish Blow Fish, though, in which he thinks he'll die because he ate a poisonous fish, but in the end he doesn't. There's no explanation offered, the viewer is left to assume that he in fact didn't eat the poisonous part and they were wrong.

TGS 2005 is getting geared up, where everybody suspects Nintendo will finally unveil some new info on the Revolution, possibly even its controller. You can bet I'll be watching IGN like a hawk until this wraps up.

Thank you.

It's a film based on the game Final Fantasy VII. Thus, the title Final Fantasy VII in it. Makes sense, no?

It's a film based around the characters in the game ffVII, probably the most loved console RPG of all time.

And thank you... two.

All I really know about War Of The Worlds is that it was presented as fake news bulletins, and people fell for it.

I wonder who would believe them if every major news channel claimed aliens had invaded. Would you? If every major news source reported it?

I'm making this programme in C. It's supposed to convert the input, which is a decimal number, into binary, and then into hex. For that, I need all the digits, hence the first loop, but I also need the entire number, hence the second loop.

First loop:

while ((dec[i]=getchar())!=EOF) {

--- if (i>=MAXDIG) {
------- printf("error: max %d digits\n", MAXDIG-1);
------- system("PAUSE");
------- return -1;
--- }

--- if (!(dec[i]>='0')&&(dec[i]<='9')&&(dec[i]=='\n'))
------- ++n;

--- if (n==2) {
------- printf("error: only digits 0 through 9 allowed\n");
------- system("PAUSE");
------- return -1;
--- }

--- if (dec[i]=='\n')
------- break;

--- decbin(i, binc);
--- ++i;
--- ++binc;

}

The problem is that in the second loop, it converts the input backwards. I.e, 1234 turns into 4321.

Second loop, 1st version:

while (i>0) {
--- dectem=(dec[i-1]-48)*(pow(10,i2));
--- dec2+=dectem;
--- printf("\n%.0f\t%.0f\n",dec,dectem);
--- --i;
}

Now, I tried the following code too, which worked at first, actually, but then it stopped working. Odd.

Second loop, 2nd version:

while (i2<i) {
--- dectem=(dec[i2]-48)*(pow(10,i2));
--- dec2+=dectem;
--- printf("\n%.0f\t%.0f\n",dec2,dectem);
--- ++i2;
}

Help, anyone?

Also, I'm fully aware of the fact that this program doesn't work on character sets other than ASCII, such as EBCDIC and stuff, and I know there's an easy fix for that, but I can't be bothered.

AndrewTaylor
30 Sep 2005, 12:44
The characters in a number-stored-in-a-string go from most-dignificant first to least significant last. You can get around it in one of two ways: you can change the second parameter on pow(), or you can dispense with the whole loop and use atoi() like everybody else.

Well, this is a first. I just experienced a contact flood on MSN, or whatever the term would be. Zeor had just signed off recently, when some seemingly random person had added me to their contact list. Well, I've met some interesting weirdos for at least one chat this way, so as I was finishing off something else and temporarily ignoring the request box, I noticed another pop up. And another. And several more.

Within a few minutes, twenty-eight strange hotmail addresses had been added and blocked in my list. Since then, I have strangely been completely unable to start XP, though it's probably just the computer having one of its random-effect fits. (Last time, it was determined for a good few hours that no internet connection was available, and then it wiped all my bookmarks in Firefox without warning.) I'm making do with 98SE right now, and I've also reinforced and thoroughlly updated my firewall and antivirus to be safe.

Fun.

That's not really my point. My general point was that it's one thing to merchandise the hell out of a popular franchise, it's another altogether to brand illegal substances with them. Doesn't matter if it's Harry Potter, Teletubbies, Garfield, or the freaking Smurfs. What's the merit? To strengthen the appeal to kids?

Mind you, I suppose drugs aren't the worst way of violating a franchise dear to someone. Family Guy porn, Hello Kitty vibrators (the latter of which are probably perfectly legit, too), yaoi, and so on. Pickleworm's blow-up-the-internet theory is sounding better all the time.
