What I intended to do last night:

Get some shopping done, do some concept sketches for my new project, finish a couple of things on RealVG that I've been meaning to do for ages, and get an early night.

What I actually did last night:

Got some shopping done, then, with the help of my housemate Adam, watched The Usual Suspects, completed the Sunday Times Mensa Test DVD with full marks, and gift wrapped everything in my other housemate's cupboard, as well as some of his refridgerated foodstuffs in shiny Christmas wrapping paper. also, attached gift tags saying "happy unbirthday", "happy January 9th", and "merry Tuesday".

Pictures to follow, assuming survival.

Edit: My favourite part was that as well as gift wrapping his box of Weetabix, I gift wrapped the individual "tubes" of Weetabixes inside it. It'll take him ages to have breakfast.

Is there any story about a positive mutation anywhere?

One of the things about evolution is that it's mostly common sense. If an animal has a positive mutation, then it has a greater chance of survival than it's un-advantaged kin... and so on.

I've only heard about negative mutations, though. Either we haven't observed any positive ones or I just haven't observed the observations.

Now I WANT to believe in evolution, since I think it's a nice theory that doesn't rely on extraordinary things (Intelligent Design) so if any of you could direct me to a story about something having a positive mutation (even if it's a small one), that would seal the deal for me. Possibly something other than an immunization to some disease, please.

Personally, I don't totally disbelieve the ID theory, either. Sometime, far, far into the future, our technology may advance to the point where we are able to create our own universe.
I think that could make a good movie. :p

AndrewTaylor
11 Jan 2007, 11:19
Is there any story about a positive mutation anywhere?

There are loads, yes. The thing about mutation is that if you take, say, a computer, and randomly chance bits of hardware then 99% of the time you'll make it worse, but just often enough it will be improved, just as drinking random chemicals will kill you 99% of the time, but some will make you healthier. The same is true of mutation: almost all random mutations are detrimental, but not all of them.

Setting aside all the mutations that made mankind and the other creatures, there are a few more recent cases of positive mutations, sickle-cell anaemia being a case in point: usually it's classed as a genetic disorder as it reduces your capacity to get oxygen to your muscles, but it also confers a certain degree of immunity to malaria, so in parts of Africa it is a positive mutation, and is passed on to children. Similarly, colour-blind people (paradoxically) have better perception of certain colours, and autistic people often have astonishing skills in other areas. (If autism was the norm and non-autism was uncommon then there's every chance not being autistic would be considered a disorder.)

There's very, very rarely a mutation which is unequivocally positive because so many things depend on environment; rats are pretty well evolved (i.e., lots of positive mutations), but if you put one in a desert it won't last very long.

Edit: There's a theory I heard a bit ago that's similar to what you said at the end there. it goes like this:

One day, computers will be powerful enough to simulate a whole world, right?
One day, we'll do it, right?
We'll probably do it more than once, right?
The inhabitants of this world won't know it's a simulation, right?
So logically, since there will be more simulations than there are universes, the statistical probability is that this is one of the simulations.

We also have to look at the key difference between Darwinian natural selection and saltationism as the driving force for evolution.

Saltationism is "evolution takes massive, single step positive strides", which is what you seem to be saying.

However, the majority of mutations are tiny, and this is what evolution relies on.

Let's see if I can think of a good analogy everyone here will get. Okay, take Worms Armageddon. I think we're all agreed (certainly on these forums) that it's a good game. Worms World Party is a small modification of the Worms formula, and it is also a good game (you can go on about it being unoriginal and a wate of money if you have W:A, but it's still just as much fun to play).

Worms Blast is a very large deviation from Worms Armageddon. Opinion differs on whether it's any good, but the fact remains that, because Worms Armageddon is a good game, Worms Blast is less likely to be a good game than Worms World Party.

Something similar happens with life. Your average organism is pretty good at living. A small mutation will produce offspring that is also pretty good at living. It might be slightly better, it might be slightly worse, but the difference is small enough that it becomes a question of overall population statistics rather than whether one particular animal is more successful than another. Once you're into this territory, with a large population, natural selection can have a greater effect than random chance.

Large mutations take a good thing and turn it into... no-one knows. It may possibly be good, but it's more likely to be bad, and it's certainly more likely to bad than a small mutation would be. So large mutations tend to be weeded out. Good small mutations, however, build up: after a while, courtesy of natural selection, a good small mutation will become the norm in a population, and then the stage is set for the next good small mutation. It takes time, but we seem to have plenty of that.

Star Worms
11 Jan 2007, 19:48
Speciation only occurs when a population is split. Imagine your town is split in two and from the rest of the world. You can only breed with others on your side. For a start, you're all different to begin with. Some mutations may occur now and again on your side and different ones on the other side. Over a long period of time the two populations may become different species.

It doesn't take a large pressure to make a difference because it happens over many generations. Even just a single gene causing a slight disadvantage would be gradually removed (or thereabouts) from the gene pool.

Positive mutations do occur but it's unlikely going to be very noticeable. It will probably give a very slight advantage and that person or animal wouldn't stand out as being a mutant. Most mutations don't make a difference because they will code for the same amino acid. Those that do are far more likely than not to cause a hiderance to the organism or even death because our genes have been perfected over time through natural selection.

Paul.Power

THIS IS A F**KING JOKE. Why do they even offer the option of store-bought time cards, then? I was under the impression this was around as an alternative for those with no access to a credit card. This... just.. buh... what the crap. See if I ever try their lousy game now.

Drawing stuff like that is so much quicker and easier with a scanner, it really is. £40 it cost me, and it has a printer and two ink cartidges in it. The ink alone must cost almost that much.

MonkeyforaHead
14 Jan 2007, 03:40
The ink alone must cost almost that much.

You have no idea how right you are. My mom's developed a strategy around printers; whenever one of a decent brand comes on a good sale, she buys it and sets it aside until the present one runs out of ink, then ditches that one (read: offloads it to someone who has some sort of need of it) and sets up the new one.

Why? Because the ink costs more than a printer on a good sale around here.

AndrewTaylor
14 Jan 2007, 11:30
I know, it's ludicrous. Printers are sold for a pittance like consoles and photocopiers so they can overcharge for ink later on, and the upshot of this, basically, is that HP have stupidly subsidised my scanner on the rather bizarre assumption that I'll have to buy a lot if ink for it. And I will, in theory, but that'll come from WH Smiths inside pens.

A scanner on its own would have been double or treble the price I paid.

I've put another strip up at http://apathysketchpad.com/henchmen/preview.html (#4)

It's pretty paradigmatic of the sort of freedom I never really had with Apathy. I liked Apathy for that, in a way, because it made it unlike almost every webcomic there is, but it did make it harder to write for extended periods without repeating myself (which I did once or twice, I think).

This is partly why I've gone with a slightly scruffier font and variable panel size/number. I've not yet decided if I'm going to allow repeated (though probably usually implicit) physical violence against the characters to be immediately resolved in the next strip.

I picked up an iTrip, which is a little dongle that attaches to the docking port of an iPod and broadcasts it on a local FM frequency that can be picked up by... well, anything that can pick up FM radio, such as my car radio. And, theoretically, the radio at work, but I'm not too anxious to go prancing in there with my iPod.
If you're thinking of overriding a ****ty radio station, you're out of luck. It's designed to not be able to override existing radio signals.

Well I finally decided, what the hey, I've got a computer I know will run it now, I'll try out the 14-day World of Warcraft trial I got in the Diablo II Battle Chest. So I spend an hour or so installing the game because it is HUEG LIEK XBOX, go through the account creation process, and find that they require a credit card for account activation.

THIS IS A F**KING JOKE. Why do they even offer the option of store-bought time cards, then? I was under the impression this was around as an alternative for those with no access to a credit card. This... just.. buh... what the crap. See if I ever try their lousy game now.

That does seem illogical. I believe one of my friends pays with timecards, I'll ask him about it. I play World of Warcraft, and it's awesome. Although I would not recommend getting addicted to it unless you have more free time than you could shake a stick at - it's murder on homework. Taking into account that they have 6 million? subscribers, it's no surprise they haven't updated an old trial set.

Right now I have them in folders organized according to how I recieved them, but I'm thinking it might be a better idea to organize by type/genre. AndrewTaylor

Hmm. There are a couple of Apathy-looking people in there. The Health and Danger representative could be Gary if he gelled his hair up, and the henchman-with-hair looks like a more chiselled version of Jack. I didn't mean either to be the same character; they're just easy shapes to draw and distinguish so they're good for recurring characters. Not that I particularly know who will recur yet -- I've just been drawing whoever the strip seems to require. I can't see Health And Danger going away, though, and the guards are always useful people to have in the case.

I think I'll have to add some canteen staff and Dr Malevolex into the mix at some stage. Also the characters might acquire names. If they're lucky.

Mostly because this just doesn't seem like any way to treat an iPod. I could just create different playlists in iTunes, but that'd probably be even more work.
I had my MP3s sorted by genre for a long time. It proved to unflexible though, as I got more and more music that isn't easily describable and I got more and more genre folders with only a handful of bands in it.

I then sorted them alphabetically, ignoring the "the" in all the "the"-bands, except for "The (International) Noise Conspiracy", with a folder for each band and chronologically sorted (year of release) subfolders for each album therein.

I also moved single, non-album songs into a "miscellaneous" subfolder and ditched all other single songs from bands that I don't have at least one album.

I usually make playlists of a band's whole chronologic discography and listen to their opus at once.
Also the characters might acquire names. If they're lucky.
I think henchmen in an evil organization must not have names. One could relate with them too much then. And as we all know evil henchmen are very replaceable and usually die like flies.

At first I thought the drawing was a bit of a step down from Apathy, but now I don't mind it, and I like its rough and sketchy style.
I'm in two minds. It's less "polished" than Apathy was because it's scanned -- so there's a few random flecks of black in coloured areas and of white in the black lines, and that also means that I can't repeatedly undo something and redraw it. But I've taken to sketching out in pencil before applying my big, chunky, variable-line-width pen, so I think generally the composition is better. Personally, I prefer the overall look this way gives me, and it's a lot more fun to draw because it's quicker and more natural and because I get to draw a bigger variety of stuff.

Edit: Also I've been doing bigger facial features, and I think that helps a lot.

But I don't know about "relatively quickly". The way I've been doing it is to scan it at high resolution, flood-fill it, then resample it down so the fills are antialiased nicely. Obviously it's not a problem at the resolution you work at. It's probably not a problem at the resolution I work at either, but I can't stand having white (or even transparant) pixels dotted about.

Usualy I select all the lines I want too keep, invert selection and clear to remove the flecks of black, then I select all the areas of white, invert selection, clear then flood fill the selected area black (with the contiguous setting turned off) to get of the white flecks.

Note: the following post only really applies to British people.

I rarely read The Sun, but occasionally if there's been a certain kind of news story going on and I want a laugh I'll pop over to www.thesun.co.uk and see what they've got.

This has to be one of the most biased articles ever - it's a "great" read: http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,11049-2007030346,00.html I find it quite frightening what kind of image they paint of Jade Goody - and the scary thing is a lot of people read The Sun - and believe it.

Note, for non-British viewers, The Sun is an often highly-biased tabloid newspaper giving "less than accurate" news reports. It is also the highest-circulated newspaper in the UK.

Big Brother as I'm sure most of you know is a show where members of the public (or in this case, Celebrities*) are locked in a house for a number of weeks. This is the 4th (I think) Celebrity Big Brother in the UK, and there have been 7 general-public ones, each one getting progressively worse. BB is seen (well, in my eyes) as the lowest-of-the-low of British TV

*Jade Goody is only a Celebrity due to Big Brother. She was in one of the earlier "public" shows and was known for her general stupidity and making it very well known she was severely lacking in the IQ department. She didn't win but became famous as a result.

Gaussian Blur doesn't seem to do the job.

Save it as a low-compression JPEG?

I know it won't achieve quite the desired effect, but close enough :p

I used Paint Shop when I did that same effect earlier in this thread, and I used the cunning ploy of working at a higher resolution than the final image. Failing that I expect dilating and eroding an anti-aliased selection ought to work.

Oh well, I ended up using Sobel Edge Detect.

Thing is, I did resize... but I added the text and bubbles after the resize...

How are you getting your selection in the first place? If that's antialiased then the eroded/dilated versions should be as well. If not, then they won't be.

I can't remember how good the GIMP is as getting selections from (presumably) text.

Why is it that when you breath in normally your stomach goes out, but when you take a deep breath, it goes in?
If you breath normally your diaphragm extends downwards, in the process expanding your lungs for breathing and at the same time pushing away your intestines, thus your stomach goes out.

When you take a very deep breath, first the above mentioned happens, followed by an expansion of the rib cage adding additional volume to the lungs.

But you're right, sometimes if you are also stretching your shoulders back at the same time, your stomach doesn't extend much.

That's why scientists (at least, material scientists and engineers) distunguish between "hardness", "brittleness" and a few kinds of strength. Words that people use without really thinking about suddenly become very hard to define in science, so science adopts a conventional definition for each.
