From the people who brought you Max Payne: www.alanwake.com (I recommend browsing gametrailers.com for the trailer, as it tends to be faster and more reliable than any of the links on the official site).

Those graphics make it look like a Half-Life 2 killer. I'm scared just to THINK of what the required specs must be.

I went to see The Fantastic 4 yesterday... quite dissapointed at it. The story was way too cheesy. And I noticed a ton of defects in the special effects. The only thing that made it worth looking was, well, the Thing or however you call it (here it's La Mole). And a couple of funny scenes.

Also, I can't see why people think the War of the Worlds was not a good movie. I found it quite awesome, specially for the effects. It's a very realistic approach of how powerless humans would be against an advanced alien race that decided to take over our planet.
I've heard people say it's absurd how the aliens are defeated, but almost all movies are absurd so why complain in this one? And what other ending would they want anyway? Tom Cruise taking the aliens down with a crowbar? The human race anihilated?

On another note, I'll have to go back to my old work at the market because two of my aunts are going to hawaii. Just for 10 days. And after that me and my brother are planning to go on vacation to a ranch that my grandfather has on Arramberri, NL. For just a week. But we are planning on taking an Snes and an N64 with us. I'll also have to buy all my favorite games again since they have misteriously dissapeard (AKA, my dad threw them away...). So any recomendations are well taken :p

Fantastic 4 was awful. Horrible story, cheesy dialogues, and the characters were retarded. As for War of the Worlds. I liked it. It was very enjoyable, and the special effects were no doubt amazing.

General photos. Yes. Descriptions can be displayed by hovering the mouse over the thumbnail.Except if you're using Opera (yes, i know i can just disable images to read them, but that kinda defeats the point) :-/
I really wish webmasters would use title instead of alt. I mean, alt was intended as an alternate display when the image isn't there, not for image descriptions.

I never really thought about the fact that the Vatican supported Hitler before. But to me, just because the Roman Catholics murdered millions of people, doesn't mean they are any less Christian than any other Christian church. Because humans are not perfect so you can't expect any of their religions to be perfect.

Now I can see why people would want to deny the holocaust, if they're Catholic that is.

I don't really know what to say about religion... it's kind of a compromise between being ethical and murdering everyone that disagrees. I have no idea what it's like to want to be religious, I'd rather stick to my own individual beliefs and opinions.

The main thing that made me angry about this site is that the guy who made it is actualy making money out of his hateful cartoons.

A little exploring of the site led me to a comic in which a gay man realizes that he is in fact evil in the eyes of god and is going to hell and promptly stops being gay. He has this fantastic revalation because a vicar/cameraman tells him a story from the old testament.

The author encourages his readers to by his comic books and leave them lying around, so that non-christians will read them and be converted.

AND PEOPLE ACTUALY DO IT.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of those given away in churches and stuff. Well, similar to those at least, not sure if they were from the same guy.
But they are indeed incredibly stupid.
On other news, I finished my first painting, used acrilic for the background and oil paintings for the character, it's an original painting by Brom (http://www.bromart.com/), a really kickass artist.
It's called Stringer, I took it from this book (http://www.therionweb.de/books/darkwerk.htm)
I can't show it off right now cause I can't scan it, I already had a photo taken from it by my aunt but her pc isn't working so she can't upload it until she gets the computer to work.

A game called "Thundra": http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=207
Daikatana: http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=205
Deus Ex: http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=208
KOTOR: http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=1604

Interestingly, they hated the first game more than Daikatana, and DE and KOTOR got their highest scores. In fact, only four games had positive scores: KISS: Psycho Circus, Soldier of Fortune (Demo) and the last two I listed above.

And here's some other stuff:

It's easily fixed.

Seriously. Doing that makes the page appear to the vast majority of users as a huge white void with a slight hint of thread in the middle. It's impossible to read and annoying, and I will delete anything that does it. There's a special hack to stop you doing it installed on the forum -- well done, you've found a way around it, but kindly knock it off now.

You know what we need to do? We need to create a sticky thread in the Fan-Art subforum with a link to The Gimp. Maybe that'll reduce the volume of MS Paint comics. I also got a N64, two controlers, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, like 3 Star Wars games, Starfox 64, 2 racing games, an NFL game, Zelda Ocarina of time, and Donkey Kong 64.
I wish I had gotten some other games, but that's all I could find** :(

Then I started discovering just how desensitized to everything he is (probably to a level similar to that of Splapp [no offense]). I should've sensed something bad coming about 20 miles away, but I guess I can blame my lack of sleep for that. Anywho, right in the middle of that chat he managed to say something that actually eclipses everything else I have seen and/or heard of as the most disturbing thing on the 'net. After a few straight lines of screaming in mental agony, I blocked him. Then I spent the next 5 minutes or so twitching slightly and clutching a pillow.

Before long, Iguana popped up in a conversation he'd obviously asked SuperBlob to start so he could bypass the block. It went a little something like this.

It was just an incredibly weird thing in a nationally syndicated comic; that's Paddy the brilliant pad of paper. There's also Penrod the Pen, but I didn't include him. Anyway, I thought, "Huh. That's an incredibly weird thing in a nationally syndicated comic," and thus it was put in my signature.

Paul.Power
2 Aug 2005, 11:12
http://bash.org/?522860In the case a != b, we have a cancellation error:<prepared>Theorem: All numbers are equal.
<prepared>Proof: Choose arbitrary a and b, and let t = a + b. Then
<prepared>a + b = t
<prepared>(a + b)(a - b) = t(a - b)
<prepared>a^2 - b^2 = ta - tb
<prepared>a^2 - ta = b^2 - tb
<prepared>a^2 - ta + (t^2)/4 = b^2 - tb + (t^2)/4
<prepared>(a - t/2)^2 = (b - t/2)^2
<prepared>a - t/2 = b - t/2
<prepared>a = b
<prepared>So all numbers are the same, and math is pointless.a - t/2 is being cancelled from one side
b - t/2 is being cancelled from the other side.

---

In the case a == b, we then have that 2a = t, and 2b = t.

Therefore in the highlighted step, you are dividing by zero, a grave error.

And thus, maths is saved!

AndrewTaylor
2 Aug 2005, 11:14
There are loads of these. They're usually divide-by-zeroes somewhere along the line, but it's a good exercise to spot them sometimes.

Paul.Power
2 Aug 2005, 12:09
Yeah, I'm familiar with a few of them. That one wasn't one I'd spotted before (and it didn't rely on a simple divide-by-zero error, but something a little trickier to spot), so I had to work a bit to solve it.

My personal favourites are Horse With Hussein (even funnier if you're familiar with A Horse With No Name), Osama Got Run Over By a Reindeer, and the Banana Man Song (the one used in that old Cards-n-Toons Flash animation). Well, I am back. The place is not as uninteresting as I tough, there are several caves around hidden in the mountains, and some appear to have stuff. Like paintings and arrows and stuff.
We talked to a man who found some small stones carved like skulls in a cave, and he said there were even more stuff there. Apparently, that one hasn't really been explored at all(mostly because the caves are hard to get to).
We got to another cave, and man that was one hell of a tour. It was like 2 hours walking to get there, and another 2 hours to go back, going up and down some mounts... And we only took 2 bottles of water with us, which only lasted half the way :p. The cave itself was quite uninteresting. It had some paintings, but it was only some red lines and circles. And it was filled with cow poop -.-
But the way to get there is quite nice, there's a spot where 2 rivers get togheter, and the general view there is quite pretty.

Also, when we just departed from here, around the middle of the way there, there was a donkey's head, intact, with only part of the spine and some ribs, in the middle of the road. It looked so awesome :p And just about a hundred feets away, there was a dead cow's body, which had been decapitated, and the head just a couple of feet away.
I would have taken a lot of photos If I had a camera, cause there were really a lot of cool stuff around there.

Also, I got hooked on Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time... but didn't got to finish it:p
I managed to get 9 hearths of life, 31 skulltulas(And got a stone to find secrets, a big wallet and a bigger wallet for that), I sold 4 masks (The fox, the skeleton, the spooky mask and the rabbit ears) and got the mask of truth or however it's called, I got all the spiritual stones and the ocarina of time. I got 3 bottles, ability to carry a lot of each thing(deku sticks, deku seeds, deku nuts, bombs...) and planted all macic beans but two(can't find the location for those two). I also won the archery game, the bowling like game(and got a pice of hearth), and the treasure chest game... I also fished an 8 oz. fish and beated the 6oz record on the fishing place. Is that all I can find before making Link a grownup?

double post edit

Oh, and there's satellite television over there, so I got to watch that. There seems to be a new channel called Animax there which shows nothing but anime. Saw an episode of Hellsing, which I quite liked. They were also showing Hack, which seemed interesting, but I never got to watch it.

England score 400 runs in a day against Australia, at over five an over, with exhilarating knocks from Trescothick (90 off 102), Pietersen (71 off 76), Flintoff (68 off 62 with five sixes) and Strauss (48 off 76), and ten sixes in the day's play.

On the other hand, they're all out. I guess there's a question mark over whether they'd've got more than 500 with a little more restraint, and Tres at least should probably have gone on to three figures, but at least it's put down a marker about positive intent.

Baseball is similar to cricket in quite a few ways. It basically ripped off cricket. And by run I don't mean around the diamond. If I remember correctly when you hit the ball you try to run as many times back in forth to score points before the other team gets the ball to the wicket you are running towards which is on each side of the straight line where you run (don't know the name). Paul, correct what I have said if there's something wrong, haven't played this for more than 4-5 years.

How the heck do you score Cricket?

For that matter, how is it played? It seems the most confusing game I've ever seen.Question 1. How is cricket scored?

The basic units of scoring in cricket is the run. A run is scored if the batsmen manage to reach the other end of the wicket without being dismissed somehow. There are at least three meanings of the word wicket (so pay attention), but in this instance I refer to the 22-yard long brown strip in the middle of the field. If the batsmen manage to achieve this twice (getting down the other end, then coming back), two runs are scored, and so on.

Around the edge of the pitch is the boundary rope. If a ball reaches the rope but bounces en route, four runs are scored. If the ball clears the rope without bouncing, six runs are scored.

The batting side are looking to score as many runs as possible (within the limit that they don't take so much time out of the game that it becomes a draw). The fielding side are looking to restrict the runs, and there are two ways of doing this: by fielding very well, or (more importantly) by taking all the batting side's wickets (And here is the second usage of the word "wicket": before it meant the pitch, now it means a dismissal or an "out" as a baseball fan would describe it). There are many ways of being out, the most common five being bowled, caught, the infamous LBW, stumped and run out. More on how these work later. Each innings requires ten wickets to fall (compared with three in baseball, but then there are typically only one or two innings per side in cricket compared with nine in baseball).

That's the scoring, now onto the mechanics of the game, which is essentially: The bowler ("pitcher", if you insist) bowls the ball to the batsman ("batter"), who looks to do two things, usually (though not always) in this order: stop himself getting out, and try and score some runs by steering, smashing or otherwise hitting the ball away from any of the fielders.

The first notable tactical difference between cricket and baseball is that in cricket, there is far more of a bias in favour of a batsman. The batsman is under no obligation to run if he hits the ball, and there is no limit to the number of balls he may leave alone should he wish to (although if he leaves the ball and it smashes into his stumps, then he has committed a rather gross error).

The second is that there is far more tactical freedom (and a corresponding rise in fascinating but confusing terminology) in cricket for both sides. In baseball, the pitcher is only allowed to pitch the ball within a small rectangle from (correct me if I'm wrong) the batter's shoulders to his waist. In cricket, the ball can bounce at the batsman's feet, rear up at his head, into his ribs, wherever, so long as he can play a "legitimate cricket stroke at it". Even then, that's not it. The ball can be fast or slow, it can do funny things off the pitch when it hits it (either "seam bowling" or "spin bowling", different methods that produce similar effects), in can do funny things in the air ("swing bowling").

To give you a clue, I will give a list of all the types of delivery I can think of off hand, and the type of bowler they are associated with, and show you the basic richness of terminology we have to deal with here.

Fast bowler: Length ball, bouncer, yorker.
Swing bowler: Outswinger, inswinger, reverse outswinger, reverse inswinger, straight ball.
Seam bowler: Off cutter, leg cutter, straight ball.
Off spin bowler: Off break, arm ball
Leg spin bowler: Leg break, googly, flipper, slider... go ask Shane Warne and I'm sure he'd reel them all off with pride.

The batter in baseball is similarly limited. If he doesn't hit the ball within a ninety degree arc, it's called a foul ball and he has to have another go. Cricket batsmen can hit the ball wherever they damn well like: straight back down the pitch, away from them at right angles, behind them over their shoulder, even over the top of their head if they feel supremely confident.

Again, a selection of terminology: cover drive, off drive, on drive, straight drive, square drive, square cut, late cut, upper cut, pull, hook, sweep, reverse sweep, slog-sweep, clip, slog.

With all these different shots, it's no surprise that the fielding is far more flexible, too. In baseball you've got your pitcher, your backstop (or whatever), four basemen and three outfielders. In cricket they're all over the place. The bowler and wicket keeper are fairly fixed, but the other nine can go wherever the captain wants them (with one restriction: no more than two fielders behind square on the leg side. This prevents the tactic of packing that area with fielders and bowling a succession of dangerous balls at the batsman's body, hoping he will fend the ball off there). Usually there are some slips, standing to one side of the keeper and assisting him to take catches if the ball is edged towards them. Then there are the gullys, slightly squarer. And then you get the likes of point, cover, extra cover, mid off, mid on, mid wicket, square leg...

Anyway, the dismissals. You can be bowled: the ball hits the wicket (the third type of wicket, this one being the thing that looks a bit like a toasting fork without a handle, standing behind the batsman) and breaks it. You can be caught: the fielder catches the ball from the batsman's bat (or gloves) without the ball bouncing in the interim. You can be LBW, leg before wicket, a complicated rule that can be summarised as "You're only supposed to use your bat to protect your wicket, not your legs". You can be stumped: you go outside your crease to get a better shot at the ball, and fail to get back in time before the keeper breaks your wicket. Similarly, you can be run out: the wicket at the other end is broken before you reach it safely.

I've probably missed a lot, but hopefully I've cleared up a few questions (although chances are I've left you with even more)

There's a new rule in Twenty20? You mean the "if you don't bowl your overs within a certain time limit (before everyone gets bored and wants to go home) then you'll have 20 runs knocked off" or something?

AndrewTaylor
5 Aug 2005, 14:28
I'm not sure, because I don't follow cricket, but I think it's something like: for five overs twice a game (whenever you feel) and ten at the beginning of the game you have to have all your feilders stood in an imaginary circle drawn on the pitch for some reason. It may not be Twenty20. It could be ODI. Could even be something else entirely, but I don't like to think there are more than three types of cricket.

It may not be Twenty20. It could be ODI. Could even be something else entirely, but I don't like to think there are more than three types of cricket. It's ODI, and you speak of what have been officially named Powerplays (much to Jonathan Agnew's chagrin, who keeps calling for someone to give them a "proper cricketing term").

Basically, the old rule was this: For the first fifteen overs of an ODI innings (which last 50 overs), there must be at least two of the nine "outfielders" (i.e. not bowler or wicket keeper) in catching positions and no more than two outside the said imaginary circle. The idea is to give batsmen the opportunity to play aggressively and hit boundaries more regularly rather than having spoilsport fielders out in the deep sweeping up balls that would otherwise be fours. For the other thirty overs, the only restriction was at least four inside the circle (or equivalently, no more than five outside it)

The change now is that there are twenty overs like this, the first ten and two other five over periods which the fielding captain nominates. The idea was to spice up the middle of the innings.

The trouble with ODIs is that they very much tend to be of the formula "start out aggressively to try and take advantage of the fielding restrictions, consolidate in the middle hitting singles and keeping wickets in hand, then have a mad kamikaze push at the end trying to make as many runs as possible". It's an effective strategy, but it makes the middle twenty overs rather unspectacular, even more so that a Test match (where at least there'll be a good number of attacking fielders and a few gaps to hit fours through)

So sticking a Powerplay in the middle should do a fair job, right? Wrong. In the recent England-Australia three match series, for example, most of the time the fielding sides decided to have all three powerplays on the trot, getting the fielding restrictions out of the way when the ball was still hard and shiny and the chance of a wicket higher. It might work better on the subcontinent, where the new ball is mainly there for the quicks to rough it up as fast as possible so the spinners can get to work, but in English conditions the new ball is your best chance of picking up wickets: it bounces, it swings, it seams.

To be frank, I would mind if, over the next couple of decades, one-day internationals were phased out in favour of Twenty20, and internationals from then on consisted of Tests and Twenty20s. ODI cricket is fast beginning to resemble a chimera of the two that isn't as good as either. If you want the excitement, watch Twenty20; if you want the strategy and intrigue, watch tests. ODIs have a bit of both, but bits-and-pieces won't get you to the highest standard.

England 1st innings 407ao
Australia 1st innings 308ao
England 2nd innings 182ao
Australia 2nd innings 175-8

Australia need 107 to win with two wickets remaining.

It's just not letting up this match, is it?

Wickets tumbled for England early on on day three, but Andrew Flintoff thumped a potentially matchwinning 73 with four sixes, and shared a crucial tenth wicket stand of 51 with Simon Jones.

Australia lost wickets steadily and at the close are on the brink of defeat, with only Warne, Lee and Kasprowicz left to bat.

Pff. They're down to tail enders, they need a hundred runs, and they're going to be starting the day, which isn't a good thing for tail enders becasue they need longer to get into the swing of it (if you'll excuse the pun). We should be able to finish them off nice and early, with any luck, so that Channel Four can show their alternative non-Cricket schedule, which I believe is a Frasier marathon.

I don't think the Aussie team will complain that much, though (although maybe the fans will). They're pretty fair minded, and they admit England deserved this one.

I may never get bored of seeing Warne kicking over his own wickets.Well, it's one way to get them out. Reminds me of Graeme Smith back in 2003, where he'd scored a double century and we were all wondering how on Earth we were going to get him out, and eventually he trod on his stumps after going further and further back to a series of Flintoff short balls. England 341-5 (Vaughan 166, Trescothick 63, Bell 59no)

The skipper's back in form again! His fourth century in eight Tests against the Aussies. I knew he couldn't face Australia for too long without it clicking again. Astonishingly, it's the first century of the series so far, and we're in the third match.

Although Australia dropped an astonishing number of catches today. I don't think Glenn McGrath will want to remember the over where he had Vaughan dropped by Gilchrist, then bowled him off a no-ball next delivery. Vaughan was in the forties at the time, and he went on to make another of those towering centuries we got so used to in 2002 and early 2003. It was slightly absurd the way he got out though, smashing the part-timer Katich to deep midwicket off a full toss.

Aus stole a bit of momentum back at the end of the day with a few wickets, but if England play well tomorrow a big score's in the offing.

Old Trafford, Day 2.

England 444ao
Australia 210-7 (Warne 45no)

Australia trail by 234 with three wickets remaining, and need a further 35 to avoid the follow-on.

With dropped catches and batting collapses, Australia seem to be rapidly turning into the '90s England side. You should not have to rely on one of your premier strike bowlers to dig you out of trouble with the bat and top score as well (Although come to think of it, that's exactly what Flintoff did at Edgebaston :p).

Still, all to the good for England.

My £15 computer arrived.

It's a bit slow, but pentium II's where never meant to run windows XP.
I'm going to miss windows 95, but I'm not going to miss not being able to use USB devices. :p

Plus my extremely legal (honest guv!) copy of photoshop works on it. As does The tiny WACOM tablet that my dad bought (and never touched again after 10 minutes of scribling in paint).

Warioware also arived today, all the way from Hong kong. I realy was enjoying it until I found out that the save function doesn't work. DAMN YOU EBAY. Still, when you buy a game for £1.50 you can't realy complain when it isn't in mint condition. :p

Still a great game, even if I do have to play through the levels in order and watch the intro animations every bloody time. :p

Just discovered the YTMND archives today.

I think this (http://keepontruckin.ytmnd.com/) goes under my list of "favourite webpages of all time". (If you can't get the sound playing in Firefox, seriously, try it in IE. It's worth it.)

Edit: This (http://floor.ytmnd.com/) one's pretty funny too.

I think that is a defunct, deleted forum. You get the same message when you try to look at forums [60 (http://forum.team17.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=60)] and [61 (http://forum.team17.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=61)].
