Labour won't have much luck at the elections. Let's see: Financial ruin of Britain, MPs' expenses, Gurkhas not being allowed in, and to top it all off the petition with the highest number of signatures on number10.gov.uk is asking Brown to resign.

Go figure. I sure as hell am not voting Labour.

According to the two best sources when it comes to politics, the Daily Mail and The Sun, Labour, and specifically Gordon Brown were solely responsible for plunging the country into recession, doom and gloom, mainly because they spent money. But if they hadn't spent money then the same two papers would be moaning that they hadn't done anything for the country :p

And given how the majority of the voting public reads those two papers, therefore it's Labour's fault :p

I don't understand that gold chart. What does it mean?

It cost us billions because if Brown hadn't have totally misjudged the time to sell the gold (from what I've heard at least the first couple of times there was no real need to sell it), or at least not sold as much, the gold he then didn't sell would have risen in value and we'd have had more money to spend later on, when we needed to.

That chart is basically saying that without fail, every time Brown has sold gold, the worldwide price of gold has then risen.

And I'm pretty sure the pound is now weaker than the dollar, and possibly even weaker than the Euro.

Despite what most Americans think, the UK is actually one of the worst-hit countries during this recession. Mainly due to an incompetent chancellor who then went on to be an incompetent prime minister. And a new chancellor whose eyebrows and hair don't match. :p

And doesn't selling stuff mean we get money for that? And with what industry are we going to sell anything with? Jobs are outsourced to other countries such as India and we import much of our goods.

The pound is still stronger, but now it gets you $1.50 instead of $2. Secondly, the cost of living is more expensive here. Even before the recession, what might cost $100 in America would probably cost about £80 here. If that's something being imported from America then it costs more to buy it, meaning prices rise. It's nearly on par with the Euro now.

Notice how other countries like Ireland and Iceland have been crippled by the recession after they witnessed some of the biggest booms in Europe.

Poor exchange rates are good for exporting but bad for importing. We import far more than we export.

I have a friend like that on Facebook. Not full-on, normally, but it's all-pervading and the very odd week it's every other update. It bothers me, because I don't think there's a polite and honest way to respond, not least because we don't talk much these days and I'd hate to start criticising her beliefs out of the blue. I mean, she's very much asking for it by adding me and then posting the stuff, but nevertheless if I ever have good reason to broach the subject I wouldn't like it to be our first contact for a month. Ironically I suspect this awkwardness is one of the reasons we don't talk much in the first place.

It's not even as if her religion is totally harmless. I mean, now she's happy, but I've known her end a good relationship because of it. I really fancied her at the time, and I think she might have liked me, but I never did anything about it, partly because I knew it couldn't work out with her being so devout. Now she's married to another Christian, so that's okay, except... if I did point out all the little flaws in Christianity, I might convince her to give it up (which is of course the aim), which might ruin her marriage. Although maybe then I could go out with her myself. It scares me how plausible that is.

You see? You see what happens when people base their life on total ****ing nonsense? It shouldn't be possible to wreck someone's life by educating them.

I feel better for that (although to be honest I felt pretty good anyway). Vader is right on Facebook-fu.

Well if it's dewy grass that's going to be a pretty low coefficient of friction.

Vader
22 May 2009, 13:00
Well, the grass won't hold much weight on its own. The earth beneath it will be causing most of the friction, plus they're gorillas, so they have a rough surface on them.

The landscape is chalky, so the dew will likely be drawn into the ground below quite quickly, too. Given the time it takes to push a pile of gorillas up a 25 degree slope, I'm not sure the dew will have much, if any, lubricating effect.

Ah, but the force required is going to change over time on account of the friction changing over time.

Are we talking about a single impact force applied for a short time, or a constant force applied throughout the duration?

Vader
22 May 2009, 17:58
I'd have thought that was obvious from the context, AK. It would be continual friction which increases slightly as the ground dries. But only a slight increase of maybe 3-4%, let's say.

edit: misread that completely. It would be a continual force as you'd be pushing them up the slope and over the cliff rather than knocking them.

Alien King
22 May 2009, 18:18
In which case, the force required will be any amount above the sum of the friction with the ground and any air resistance. Air resistance will vary with velocity, though air resistance is probably insignificant enough to be ignored.
Friction can be modelled by having a limiting value equal to the reaction force from the ground on the forumers x the coefficient of friction. I don't think this will change given the below.

The rate of change of friction according to your scenario will also be insignificant and can probably be ignored, unless we're really, really slow at pushing these forumers.

If we are to take the change of friction into account, then calculus is going to have to get involved.

Actually, i = ±sqrt(-1). It's the imaginary unit.
The fullstop is just a symbol for multiplication (ie: ×). Often, instead of an x, mathematicians use a dot.

It is, yes.

In any kind of formal writing, x is a variable, × and . are distinct forms of multiplication, and * is convolution. Unitalicised 'x' doesn't mean anything.

In code and general typing, * is usual for various obvious pragmatic reasons.

so it can be a dot, an x, an asterisk or in some cases nothing at all:

Yes, but it's not really an x but this sign: ×
Also, the dot is not a comma . but actually this sign: ·
Otherwise you'd confuse them with the variable x and the comma.

Leaving out the multiplication sign completly is normally only used when natural numbers multiply a variable. Numbers other than natural numbers are normally noted as fractions with the · sign multiplicating the variable.

So, when typing on computers, the asterisk is the most convenient sign.

When handwriting it's the dot.
At least in German, where the usage of , and . is switched around in number related things.
In English the × sign is probably the better choice to avoid confusion between the dot and comma.

Edit:
Bleh! There was already another page with explanations.

I don't think I've talked about Worms much since when Worms 3D was in development and shortly thereafter. There's not much more to be said I think.

Hmmm, it seems Rather Than Capitalising Every Word Which Lets Face It Is Quite Annoying the forum now just makes all letters lowercase. It never used to do that... Quoting a post was always a way around the caps filter.

It feels like blogging and twittering is more of an American thing. Nobody I know in real life here in Sweden blogs, twitters or myspaces. It seems extremely rare. But our newspapers often write about how trendy it is to blog. But even then it's usually about people blogging for someone else, like a company or their political party..

I think Facebook is the only real exception here. But I can't stand it, it asks so much time from you to be active there. I'd rather just use msn to say what I want to say to someone when I'm at the computer.

@FutureWorm you'll have a slightly lonely time if you don't have any followers who follow less than a thousand other people.

@Akuryou13 It's also quite good for turning a boring evening watching bad TV alone into a more social discussion of whatever's on.

I never really understood the point of Twitter. Seems to me to be a Facebook-like site that only allows updating your status.

@StarWorms I think Facebook's slightly crap implementation of @reply-like functionality has probably put people off Twitter.

@Xinos I know a few bloggers in real life. It's not cool, but it's not nerdy either. Newspapers have no idea about the internet.

Twitter struck me as: "LOOK I AM TYPING ON TEH INTERNETS, LOL"

What you say is true, Andrew. Using Twitter is like using a forum in that we can all type and discuss things. The difference is that if I join this forum and post something, everyone who is a member of this forum can read it and reply. I don't have to wait for people to come and 'follow' me once I'm a member to force my words into their eyes. Same with Facebook, I guess.

I think either Facebook or Twitter. It seems doing both is pointless and personally whilst I don't like either I prefer Facebook because I already have a bunch of 'friends' on there and it has much more functionality (albeit mostly annoying apps and "what type of thing are you" quizzes).

edit: Also, this thread would've been too long for Tw@tter.

AndrewTaylor

I use Facebook because my friends use it. But its messaging system is worse than email and much, much worse than Google Wave looks like it will be, and the email alerts that go with it leave a lot to be desired. Its 'wall' system is neat, but the implementation, particularly your 'status' and the comment/reply functionality is confused and badly built (because both evolved from two distinct attempts at the same thing). My friends' shared items are a nice feature, but I read them on Google Reader, not Facebook. A few changes and it could be great, but it's very slow to update its service. If Facebook dies, that will be what kills it. If it doesn't, its massive established userbase will be what saves it, more than anything the developers do.

Twitter just replaced MSN Messenger as my primary online chat portal thing.

Edit: that and Google Talk, which is too much nicer than MSN for MSN to survive.

Vader
30 May 2009, 14:18
Fair enough.

I mainly use Facebook because it has the Zombies app and for some reason during my stint of unemployment I've found clicking the quest links therein quite entertaining. I've now written a very simple browser in C# which basically clicks the links for me every 10 minutes, so I barely use Facebook at all anymore other than checking up on my zombie. It's not so bad, though. You're right about the statuses and comments but y'know, at least I can link to my LEGO blog in a comment (and get a fair amount of traffic that way). I can't do that on Twitter and even if I could nobody would see it.

As for replacing MSN, I prefer to keep my chat between me and whoever I'm chatting to private, so a webpage dedicated to archiving all my stupid chatter doesn't suit me at all.

Oh, the other thing that irritated me about Twitter was that even with a friend's real name and his Twitter name I was unable to find him. Eventually he found me but that's beside the point.

AndrewTaylor
30 May 2009, 14:29
Yeah, the people search thing is rubbish. The other day I got a 'welcome to twitter' email for someone else. I had his full name and email address and still couldn't find him. Never found my ex, either, despite having all the same information on her. Twitter has private messaging, by the way, but most of what I discuss on Twitter is semi-public anyhow. I like that it's publicly accessible because it means anyone can (and might) butt in with interesting and relevant information.

I've got traffic from Twitter before now. Somehow I've amassed 220 or so followers.

Vader
30 May 2009, 14:35

I can see the appeal in that, I just don't imagine it happening very often on account of how difficult it is to find someone on there. Although, I suppose if someone was looking for someone else they might happen upon your twitterings and chip in... I suppose.

I have something like 120 Facebook friends and I usually get about 20 hits on LFK from Facebook. Not a great proportion, really, but enough. I get very few hits on LFK anyway which is probably my fault for not updating it more often.

I still don't see why use social sites for instant messaging. Surely that's what instant messengers are for? They've had years to perfect the magical art of sending messages instantly. And in the end people just wanna go back to a glorified forum?

I mean, if you wanna use them as a forum, that's fine. They do a fine job just storing up messages. But that's not instant messaging.

Twitter is terrible for instant messaging. (assuming you're not using an app to magically fix it for you, but then that's not Twitter doing it). The reply-to feature was only introduced because people came up with the convention, it was never intended. All it does is make sure each side of the "conversation" gets the message. Multiple conversations will easily clutter up and get mixed with regular tweets, and to go back a few messages all you can do is keep clicking the "reply to" link. And in the end you don't even know if the other side intends to reply at all, in fact I've rarely had anyone ever reply to my tweets. It's not an instant messenger, it's no different from e-mail or SMS (in fact it's pretty much just online SMS). It's just a clutter of loosely-linked messages.

Aside from that, Twitter just becomes a chore for me. Even if you're just following a few people and even if you're using every app possible to clear it up for you, you'll still get tons of messages every day, whether you like it or not. Unless you pick your followers really carefully, I doubt you'll be interested in 100% of the nonsense people feel like spouting out. But there's no control, no filtering, so you just have to keep scrolling through message after message. It's no better than chain mail, with people showing off every single link, pic, or thought they think it's interesting. And unless you check it every single minute or so, you'll probably end up missing anything important anyways. It's like keeping up with an IRC channel or a forum, with everyone just shouting into thin air hoping to draw attention (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN2HAroA12w).

...well, I'm not sure how revolutionary it really is, but it is convenient. To try it out, here's all my MP3 (http://home.supsuper.operaunite.com/media_player/), password is "cheese".

Even though you don't know her too well...

Why, exactly, would you not have picked her? And where are you going with this?

For anyone not from the UK, PC World is a place where things either "don't exist," or they "do exist and Maplin definitely sells them." For example, you cannot purchase USB to Serial adaptors from PC World because no-one makes them, but Maplin sells a lead to go from HDMI to SCART for about £10. Both of those are bull****.

AndrewTaylor
18 Jun 2009, 01:19
I have it on good authority that there is no combination of plugs that Maplin don't sell a cable with. Last week I bought a lead with a mini headphones jack on one end, and a 13-amp mains plug on the other end.

I just really needed something to make my stereo emit a really loud bottom G and then explode.

AT: You get a 13-amp plug to normal-sized headphone jack with the ZX81 (by normal size I mean the size you get on computers - not the mini size you get on phones, nor the big size on amps)

Who the hell comes up with these stupid forms?

I have to fill one in and one section asks about people who live with me.

I quote:

Please tell us about:

Relatives who live with you
Friends who live with you

Do not tell us about:

Relatives or friends you live with

What a load of b******s.

AndrewTaylor
23 Jun 2009, 17:37
That's fairly straightforward. If you live with them, don't write it. If they live with you, do.

I'll hear no complaining of Western forms while Japanese bureaucracy exists. There have been multiple occasions where I've been required to write quite in-detail personal detail about myself 2 or 3 times on the same sheet of paper, for the same questions, just under different sections. As though my address was likely to have changed while I was filling in the first bit.

I have also seen forms asking for the date on no less than 5 dotted lines, all on one sheet.

CyberShadow
23 Jun 2009, 18:48
Maybe they cut out that form by sections, to be filed in different places?
