sorry to interrupt your conversation, but I need suggestions.

I'm making a map of geekdom. on this map I have sections for everything from Nintendo to Magic The Gathering. in the nintendo section I've drawn out the world maps for Ocarina of Time and Super Mario World, as well as some features like a landing pad for samus's ship and a dreamland fountain from kirby. now I'm trying to brainstorm for Sony's area of the map and I can't think of any series that's really well-known for being sony's. I also can't think of any particular symbols that are very sony specific aside from the square, circle, triangle and X shapes.

can anyone suggest some landmarks for sony? the bigger the pun the better, and be as abstract as you want to, I just need ideas.

Resident Evil, Ridge Racer, Metal Gear Solid and God of War all spring to mind as Sony classics. Also there are the Crash Bandicoots, Spyros and Ratchet & Clanks to consider. Was Banjo Kazooie Sony?

The 3D T-Rex which came on the PS1 demo disc is another Sony icon.

Buzz, Rollcage, Wipeout, Uncharted, Okami, LittleBigPlanet, Disgaea and God Hand also spring to mind.

I've only just woken up so this post might contain inaccuracies.

I've only just woken up so this post might contain inaccuracies.resident evil crosses over to all platforms, as does crash bandicoot, Okami and Disgaea if nothing else.

Uncharted, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and Metal Gear are ones that I'd use but I don't know the series enough to know of anything large and iconic I can draw. any suggestions?

LittleBigPlanet is another in that category. I'm working with tiny pixel-art for this project, and I'm just baffled in terms of ideas of what I could draw for LBP. I'm thinking about maybe just putting a sackboy face in a forest or something along those lines.

Spyro was on the dreamcast or sega before the playstation, wasn't he?

Vader
11 Nov 2009, 14:05
Resi crosses all platforms now but it started as a PlayStation exclusive, didn't it? Same with Okami (although that's now more of a Nintendo game, Ill grant you). Crash Bandicoot is a Sony game, I swear.

Disgaea is only on PS2, PSP and PS3, is it not? Oh wait, they brought it out on DS too. Idiots.

I dunno about Spyro. Never had any interest.

As for things you could draw to represent stuff, have you tried doing a Google Images search? Crazy idea, I know. :P

LBP you could have some of the stickers (see the boxart). Wipeout you can have one of them floaty bike things you race about.

Gah, **** you HP. I was checking what games the new PC comes with, and I was surprised to see a list of 41 games on the Games folder. I was even more surprised to find World of Goo in there, along with stuff like Peggle, Zuma, Bejeweled etc. So I figured there was something fishy. Indeed, this are all demos that run through WildTangent, I get a free try or a demo, and then it seems I need to buy "WildCoins" or purchase the games to play them. Thing is there is nothing that explicitly explains this until pretty much when you're about to run the game, and even then it's just hinted by a large coin that says "Free Pass" above the "Play" button and the text "Enjoy your free pass!" to the right.

That's just mean.

That and Driver, Gran Turismo and Kula World.driver was ported to PC and even then isn't something I would be able to use for my purposes.

I took the advice given, though, and added an umbrella corp logo, a sackboy sitting on a world covered in stickers, a racetrack with the Gran Turismo logo on top of it sitting next to a city, and a Mako Reactor.

I figure that's enough iconic stuff to get the idea. now I'm finishing everything up and trying to decide what to fill the empty space I've got between the regions devoted to Manga and american comic books. as well as figure out what to put in the section devoted to warhammer.

Well you're gonna have a hard time because Sony has never aimed to have a mascot per-se, but rather be more mainstream by just having a huge variety of franchises available. Best to just go with what makes people think of Sony, whether exclusive or not.

At most you have Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet & Klank, LittleBigPlanet, God of War, Uncharted (and Final Fantasy to a fair extent).

philby4000

If you want some stuff to represent sony why not think about how important the characters were at the time rather than worrying about wether later games got ported to other platforms.

Some important playstation icons-

Crash bandicoot
Spiro
Lara croft
Jill valentine (or any of early resi characters)
Solid Snake
Cloud Strife (lots of FF characters to choose from but he's the most iconic by a mile)
Ratchet and clank
Jak and Daxtrer
Killzone
Katamari
Ico and Shadow of the collossus
the dude from god of war
Drake from uncharted
Wipeout's always been a strong sony brand too.

As a non-Playstationer I'd say Solid Snake/Metal Gear Solid, Lara Croft/Tomb Raider, Ratchet & Clank, Crash Bandicoot, LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo are the best ones to pick from the bunch. Resident Evil is a big name too I suppose.

Final Fantasy is far bigger than just Sony so I don't think it fits. Tekken and Ridge Racer appeared in arcades first. The rest I don't really know/hear anything about apart from their name.

Shame, because I'd've stuck Cloud in even though Final Fantasy isn't exclusively Sony, because a) the characters change every game anyway, b) dude's* pretty emblematic of the PSX and c) he also represents one of Sony's first major coups, snaffling FF from Nintendo.

You could always balance it by sticking a character from an earlier FF game on the Nintendo team.

Made a few changes to the Grand Wyvern (http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/2009/grandwyvernv2.jpg). I didn't like the smog-belching extra turbines (they seemed so two centuries ago next to the pollution-free drives already on the back of the ship) or the cliche beep-boop-I'm-alien-technology-pew-pew blasters I shoehorned onto the thing, so I got rid of those and replaced those forward lamps with those claw-looking weapon thingamabobs, which are more appropriate to the wyvern theme anyway. Also a little color tweak on the engines and a little decorative touch on same.

I'd be putting all of this in the Spore thread in Online Orgy, but that's dead with everything else.

i have no idea if this is what you're looking for but pinball machines have a lot of coils in them and you can buy replacement coils at any online shop that sells pinball parts

That's very close but not quite what I need. Those could theoretically work, but they're too bulky. We need something that's basically just an exposed coil around some ferromagnetic core. We're going to arrange them in a ring as part of a rim-driven motor we're making, kind of like in the hybrid engine of the 1st gen. Honda Insight: (there's a ring of coils around the bottom right facing side where the driveshaft should emerge from)
http://greenz.jp/en/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/honda-insight-engine1.jpg

We're making a rim-driven propellor, something like this: (but WAY smaller)
http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/attachments/technical-discussion/12237-rim-driven-propellers-rdt-2.jpg?d=1142018972

Each motor needs 12 coils, and we're using 4 motors for an unmanned submarine, so that's a lot of coils. (plus the prototype propeller which we probably won't use on the real thing) We can try to, and we'll probably have to, coil them ourselves on a lathe or something, but we're worried about quality and consistency, and it would make everything easy to buy them.

We're making a remotely operated submarine for a competition. It can't be huge. We're mostly doing a rim driven propeller for coolness points. These engineering competitions are just as much about showing off what useless and cool technology you put in your device as they are about completing the objective.

We found a supplier for the coils though, apparently.

edit: It's like a ROV with robotic arms and it has to open hatches and stuff. We're not trying to make a public transit system for mer-people.

edit2: hell, the competition takes place inside a swimming pool. The goal is NOT to be big enough to drive along the bottom.

I saved and quit because I wanted to reply, and I thought the whole "receive messages in-game via friendly demon" thing was surprisingly enjoyable, so don't think I had a massive panic attack when he came up to me, or something.

On a similar subject, my current NetHack character is moments away from grabbing the amulet of Yendor and starting an ascension run, which is far further than I've gotten with any other character (I hadn't even done the quest before), so it's all rather exciting.

Don't suppose you saw that here? (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3222410&pagenumber=33#post370207121) ;)

Oh wow, I love you for linking to that. I remember my over-sensitive younger self getting so freaked out by the gory pictures in Dreamcast magazine's preview article that I taped that section of the pages together so I could browse without seeing Mr. Banballow's creepy mug. It's wonderful how see just how silly that game actually is. That the LP itself is so well made is quite a bonus, too.

And that whole experience was back in 2001, so it's a perfect way to end the decade, actually.

i don't think that pigbuster reads or posts here anymore

You thought wrong.

Seriously, though, what's up with this forum being so quiet? There's a thread that date's back to July on Fan Art's first page, for the love of Criminy.
[EDIT] Wooowwww, this forum is more abandoned than I'd thought. I'm kind of sad, now. :(

The idea is that year 1 is the first year, not that 1 year has elapsed, 2 is the second year, meaning 1 year has elapsed, etc. Thus this is the 2010th year, and 2009 have elapsed, so this isn't actually the decade.

If you ask me it's a load of horse-sh*t and there should be a year 0 with the decade starting now.

I think that's true. When the modern dating system was created (over a thousand years ago), the concept of 0 hadn't entered Western mathematical thinking; hence we started with the year 1, not 0.

I'm pretty sure this is right. But I'm against it and think we should switch to something where it works properly. A bit like they tried to switch from BC/AD to BCE/CE only it'd do better because it'd have an actual practical advantage over the wholly silly BC/AD system.

Actually, screw it, lets set zero at 13.7 billion years ago and not worry about BC and AD. Kelvin time!

I've thought of this before and like the notion, but we just don't know the age of the universe accurately enough to call this the year 13700002010 or whatever. And what if we find we were 2 years off?...

With significant digits we could just call every year 13.7 billion, but that might get a little confusing.

Alien King
4 Jan 2010, 11:58
The only problem with the current system is a lack of the year 0. I don't really mind to be honest.

Any new system should have a recent, arbitrary date set to the year 0. The initial guess of the birth of a Christian/Jewish Prophet is as good as any other, even if it was guessed wrong.
I myself might be tempted to pick something closer to the fall of the Roman Empire.

Met her on Deviantart or something. Oh Plasma when will you learn.

In fairness, that's a totally legitimate way to meet someone.

Well, you know, the more respectable parts of Deviantart are. The parts with actual artistic merit in them.

Edit: I have in the past been guilty of the crime outlined by Mr Kcd, and feeling bad about that, overcompensate by pointedly not mentioning any new relationship until it comes up naturally. Although in reality, this is the same principle thought through better: rather than make a big song-and-dance about any fleeting affair, I deliberately underplay it to demonstrate how routine and unremarkable it is that I might be seeing someone.

I ruin this slightly by self-effacingly mentioning my lack of success in love as often as possible, but this is of course a secret ploy to make sure people still know about it when I am seeing someone.

Which I am self-effacingly not at the moment. Not that it would be in any way unusual if I wasn't.

I am the very picture of cool egomania.

I feel pretty proud of myself for some reason for bending PuTTYtel (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html) to my will -- I was using the Windows telnet client for alt.org play, even though it tended to exhibit some weird glitches, especially while trying to spectate, and didn't support all of Nethack's colors. However, I didn't like anything's appearance in PuTTYtel, so I managed to identify the font the windows one used (Terminal, incidentally) and then nethack's IBMgraphics setting didn't work, so in a total shot in the dark, I somehow managed to find the setting to make that work too. So now basically it's exactly the client I've wanted, ideal for alt.org purposes. As a neat little bonus, I even set it to say just NetHack in the title bar. ...Also switched Dungeon Crawl settings over to Terminal, too. I just like it better than courier new or whatever the default was.

PuTTYtel is a pretty great telnet client if you can fiddle with it just right.

It didn't even have the App Store and could only run a few basic apps from Apple. The second iPhone came out and suddenly it became popular.

Well yes, there is potential behind this form factor. My problem with it is that, as it stands right now, it's a completely retarded piece of product. At least the iphone wasn't that far behind what other cellphones did back when it first came out. It wasn't as offending as the iPad is at the moment.

Simple, its for a load of Apple fanboys to say "oh my god I MUST have that, its the best designed, most beautiful tablet ever, and I don't care how much it costs!", and then rush out and buy five eat; thus ensuring Apple make even more money this financial quarter than the last.

Incidentally, I won't be buying one - not yet at least. Mind you I said I'd never buy an iPhone, but the second generation iPhone changed that... To be honest, I don't really have a need for a tablet (certainly not the one Apple designed), as I've never really had any need for something between my iPhone and my MacBook Pro.

I get the impression Steve Jobs has never used a decent netbook, and doesn't know what they're for. The new ones are cheap(ish), have a decent screen, and a powerful enough processor to run windows7 and some simple/old games. And can fit in your bag. This thing is merely small.

2. Utterly disappointing announcement
3. Becomes the source of every joke
4. Sells like hotcakes and becomes a new technology standard anyways
5. Flame wars
6. Apple release a much, much better version with many more features 8 - 12 months later (that to be honest they should really have released as the first version), and all the early-adopters start sending loads of hatemail to Apple.
7. People moan that this new, second release still doesn't have features that other, lesser products have had for ages, or totally stupid features that are of no real use to anyone.

Or,

1. Internet users with no design experience imagine a thing they think would be great.
2. Apple ignore them and release a gadget.
3. Internet users with no design experience and who haven't actually used it mock it on the internet.
4. Everyone else buys it because it's fine.
5. Internet users with no design experience and who haven't actually used it refuse to accept that their uninformed opinions are not universal facts.

"The Apple Cycle" makes a lot more sense if you assume that everyone on the internet is an idiot.

So you agree that people with design experience also think it's a useless device. Thank you.

I wanted to use electrical tape, but I was at work and we don't have electrical tape there. Well, we do, but since we are remodeling the office everything that is not commonly used has been tucked away in boxes.

Anyway, the "fix" didn't last long, the tape didn't hold it together well enough. :p

And aside from that, everyone has some design experience, even if it's just being able to recognise when something works well and when it works badly.

I dunno. Touch screen technology sounds exciting and stuff, but I can't see how this machine can really exploit it. I cannot imagine wordprocessing being much fun with an onscreen keyboard, it's going to be limited in a "graphics tablet" sense by the lack of power, the screen's going to get greasy and seems liable to breaking, a lack of USB ports is going to seriously hamper its flexibility... it just doesn't feel right.

i don't think that's true at all. cameras would be a lot of fun for videoconferencing apps and other stuff like that. hell, the dsi has a pair of cameras and all it does is play games - why not put them on a device that can do something worthwhile with them?

I can say from first-hand experience, as an owner of a tablet PC, that I would not find the iPad nearly as useful as I find my current computer. No Stylus? Seriously? Tablet PC's are so you can draw on them, take notes, annotate PDF's, etc. Fingers aren't as accurate as a stylus, and never will be. Yes, there will surely be 3rd party styli, but does the iPad have a slot for you to store it? I have a little clicky deal in mine like the nintendo ds has, so it's out of sight, out of mind, until I need it and it's always there.

I don't think it takes any design experience to realize that not putting a full operating system on it is a waste. Yes, there will be apps for things, but it'll never be the same. And no multi-tasking? My current tablet multitasks quite well, thank you very much, and it functions as my primary computer. Any tablet computer should be able to do anything any other computer can do. I am typing this on a tablet that can do everything I need it to do for my engineering coursework at the same time. I can run Solidworks, Satellite Tool Kit, Matlab, and Excel, all at the same time, and then I can take it to class and write my notes on it. It's 3-years old, and it's still more capable than the iPad.

With a choice between "tablet that can do any computing task" and "tablet that can't" it's a clear choice in my book. I just see the iPad as a half-assed version of what I already have.

It would be an awesome machine to play Starcraft on though, if only it had the operating system to do it...

Yeah, I'm sure most people can work out whether the iPad would be any use to them in only a few minutes. But 99% of the iPad criticism I've seen has been people whining that it's missing features their laptop has. So what? Maybe it's not aimed at you. Or maybe you're thinking about it wrong.

I didn't think I wanted an iPhone until I got one. There was no slot in my life it would drop into. It carved a slot, and if I lost it there would be a gap. I didn't think a hard-disc TV recorder would be much better than a DVD recorder, but it revolutionised how I watch TV. Maybe I'm just a moron, but I suspect everyone thinks this way. How many people do you know who love Twitter? How many thought they would?

The iPhone is a lovely way to check emails or do Twitter or do light web-browsing. The biggest problem with using the iPhone is that it's so small. The iPad solves that, making it ideal for messing about if you don't want to wait for a laptop to boot, or for people who are bad with computers or whatever. You don't need USB ports or 100GB of space or video-out for that.

Twisting Steve Jobs' quote around so that it sounds like he's comparing netbooks to the iPad when in fact he's comparing them to laptops doesn't change that. Also 'aren't' is spelled wrong.

I don't think the iPad will take off at all. Apple seems to have tried to cater for too many markets and has missed all of them.

So, you want to read eBooks (or whatever they are called)? Too bad, the iPad is too bulky. When I was coming back from home in January there was a girl on the train with one of those Kindles. It was a decent size (about the width and height of an actual book. You'd need to carry a bag if you were to take an iPad with you. At a display size of 9.7", it's more like a netbook without a keyboard.

And that brings me neatly onto my next point - the netbook market. Netbooks are pretty popular - a nice portable computer that you can take whereever. You know what's so great about a netbook? You can sit at a desk, type normally and view the screen at the same time. Choose the iPad and you can only take 2 of those 3 options.

what I don't agree on, though, is your "never take off" bit. I damn near guarantee that by the next iteration of the product, it'll find a niche where it works well and will be catered to that. what that niche is will be decided by the few who DO buy it now and what they use it for most. couple years from now the iPad will very likely have evolved into something useful where-as now it's a worthless pile.

Yes, but a product is supposed to already have a niche by the time of its production. You're not supposed to make a product and then hope that by the time the second version comes out someone will have found a use for it.

After sleeping through my phone alarm a few times, I'm looking for a proper alarm clock. I'm quite fussy however: I don't want one that ticks (which rules out analogue), and I don't want one that lights up the room like a fireworks display (which rules out most digital ones). What I want is a digital alarm clock with no bright lights, on which I can see the time during daylight, but at night-time I need to press a button to turn the light on to view the time. Can anyone recommend anything?

Pure digitial clock radios? Quite pricey though.

To see the clock at any time you just touch the handle and the display lights up (its not really possible to see the time during daylight without touching the handle). It has two alarms and can be set to either wake you up with the radio or wake you up with quite a loud bleeper - or both!

After sleeping through my phone alarm ... Can anyone recommend anything?

The radio-controlled ones (set by the Rugby atomic clock time signal thing) are good for that. Some of them emit a high-pitched whine only the young can hear when the backlight is on but they don't tick or light up when you don't want them to.

More extravagantly, my last alarm clock was Clocky, which fulfils all your requirements as well as a custom snooze time, bizarre R2D2-style alarm tone that's very hard to ignore or incorporate into a dream, and the ability to drive away on wheels if you don't get out of bed after it goes off the first time.

Currently I'm using an iPhone app which uses the accelerometers to judge when you're only sleeping lightly so it can wake you reliably and quietly. This seems to work okay. Also fun is the kind of alarm clock that attaches to the ceiling and retreats up its string every time you hit 'snooze' so eventually you're standing up. No idea when they light up.

SargeMcCluck
16 Feb 2010, 13:20
My wife's mother bought her a light lamp thingy a few years ago. The alarm can either be a buzzing, or load sound from an SD card. The time (and date) is a backlit LCD, and then there's a light that can be dimmed on the top of the clock.

Turn the light on, then push the alarm button, and the lamp will slowly fade (simulating a sunset). Then, before you wake up, the light will slowly fade in, and once at full brightness, the alarm goes off. It's great (especially in Sweden in winter, when there's a distinct lack of light).

A couple of days later, the card is active, so I try again, except now MAGICALLY there is no option to transfer from a credit card, instead it only tells you how to do it trough a bank transfer. Then I find an option to link a credit card to that account, and after a week of waiting for a confirmation number, I finally succeed in linking it, but there is still no option to add money from the credit card. So I decide to settle for a transfer trough the bank's website. But then, I cannot access the feature because I need that stupid security machine the bank issues that gives you a unique code every x ammount of time, and my dad has it with him, and I keep forgetting to ask him for it. So now I finally remember to ask him to leave it home so that I can use it, I arrive from work today around 4Pm, and decide to give it a go... but the stupid goddamn bank website is acting all retarded and won't let me access the transfer-to-another-bank feature. Basically, I click the link for this feature and it loads for like 3 seconds, and then automatically redirects me to a completely different and totally useless feature. WHAT THE ****. And now it's 4:42 PM and I can no longer do transfers.

One of this days I'm going to carry out my revenge against the universe. ONE OF THIS DAYS.

So, are you suggesting that you are in some way separate from the universe?

Probably won't help, but did you try it in different browsers?

Well, you know I did an awful lot of *****ing about having to do time trials in Mario Kart Wii to get a lot of the unlockables, but I figured sooner or later I'd just shut the hell up and do it. I just did. Armed with a better understanding of lots of different vehicles and more characters to choose from, I just got done knocking down time trials left right and center, and now I've unlocked every vehicle too.

Last time trial to unlock the last vehicle was N64 Bowser's Castle, using Dry Bowser on the Flame Runner (the most overpowered vehicle, period). Take that... some...body. ...Anyway, I also got some pretty impressive times on the Dolphin Dasher, even with fairly sloppy performances.

I could unlock Mii Outfit B, which would be the very last unlockable, by going back and getting every single remaining fast ghost. But I don't really want the thing. Can't guarantee I'll never bother to get it, but yeah.

Edit: That last middleweight kart I wanted so badly is black and red with the Mii colors. So worth it.
