Again, I wasn't talking about Shazans, or "fixing" any commandment - I was stating my real life views
Well I know, but you offered your view in the middle of a discussion of Shazan scripture. I was just making a distinction between your presumably-Christian stance and what was actually being discussed.

Although, while we're on the subject, I think you state your view badly.

I assume you don't really mean "omnipotent God" at all; you mean "infallible". Omnipotence is purely power, and I have sufficient power to decide if people live or die. If I decide my housemate should die then I have more than enough power to pop downstairs, find that knife we have that can actually cut things, and slit his wrists while he sleeps. What you are presumably saying is that I don't have the knowledge or authority to decide he should die in the first place.

If you use the word "infallible" then you can say "nobody is infallible, so nobody can make that decision" and that's fair enough, because it doesn't imply that anyone or anything is infallible. But if you say "They are not God, they are not omnipotent, they do not deserve to make that decision" that that, to me at least, implies that there is an omnipotent God out there somewhere who does get to make that decision.

As a Shazan/atheist, I find that to be a rather lazy viewpoint, because it suggests that there exists somewhere a moral code -- the one God uses -- which is Right and all the others are Wrong, or at least A Bit Off, and I don't like that. I mean, clearly MtlAngelus is pro-death-penalty and you are anti-death-penalty. So by your logic, one of you is Wrong. And if my presumption that you are Christian is on the money then it's probably you, since the Bible is choc-full of death penalties, of righteous smitings and cities being destroyed and all the rest of it. God states repeatedly in the Bible that the penalty for sin is death. As a Christian, you can't be anti-death-penalty at all; merely against people meting it out. (After all, there was that case a couple of millenia ago where they accidentally had the son of God killed. That was a bit of an embarrasment all round, if it was true.)

But what I really hate about it is the idea that if I live my life to my own moral code, which I have developed myself and which I believe in, then that's almost certainly Wrong, but if someone else sits down and takes their moral code from some book written a millenium ago, blindly and unquestioningly, that that's intrinsically Right.

That, to me, is really stupid. Aside from anything else, it means you can effectively go to Hell purely because you never happened to read that book. If there's an infallible God then he by definition wouldn't inplement that system because it's up patently unfair.

(And no, I don't believe Shazanism (?) is a real religion. >_>)

It's called Shazanity, and I don't see why it shouldn't be a real religion. It makes more sense than Catholicism, it's founded on a nobler goal than The Church Of England, it has never been involved in terrorism or holy war, and it preaches that creationists are wrong. And it's democratic.

Sounds to me like it's not onle a religion, but it's one of the best.

The only stumbling block is the fact that we just made up all the scriptures and we only have a small number of followers, but all religions started off that way.

But yes. Shazanity is mostly a way to make a point. It's not intended to be a serious religion, although frankly it would do a lot of good if it was.

I never break that one. It is natural for me to mash space twice after every period. Annoyingly-enough, HTTP-based stuff fails to display my proper number of spaces unless I use  .

Two spaces are wrong. (Well, the second one is.) It was convention on typewriters (as was using the letter "l" instead of the number "1" and using apostrophe-backspace-period instead of an exclaimation mark) but modern computer fonts are designed specifically to work with one. All (at least, practically all) professional publishers use one space.

Not Christian, sorry. I don't believe in any God, any Hell, anything. I just believe that we are alive, and should enjoy life and make it as enjoyable for others as possible, and then die.

As for my quote, I wasn't suggesting there is an omnipotent being/God "out there" - I was meaning that there is no such thing, no person or thing (Or, so I believe) *has* the right to kill, for any reason excluding defence (Because I'm sure as hell not sitting there as somebody kills my girlfriend, for example). But I didn't expand this much (And I could expand further) because I was just trying to tell Mtl that there are other viewpoints, and that I don't think he has the right to decide some people are allowed to die. Not enter a long discussion about a made up (like all, mind) religion.

All (at least, practically all) professional publishers use one space.Double-spacing after sentences allows one to read more easily by denoting the end of a sentence more clearly. It feels nicer to me to read a document with double spaces after sentences. I have a logical reason for liking double spaces after sentences, regardless of the logic of conformity (which I support quite a lot, in most cases regarding writing style!). It allows me to read faster and more comfortably.

Huh? "Thou Shalt Use But One Space After A Full Stop." Doesn't that mean you break the commandment if you use two spaces? I interpret "use but one" to mean "use nothing but one" or "use only one".

It's like saying "I have but one wish before I die". It means you have only one wish, doesn't it?

I don't know why I prefer to use only one space. Maybe it's because it takes up less room and less typing, and I've always done it.

Well there are people who do decide to take people life's, and often for petty reasons. By their same logic, I would have the right to take their lives for a whatever reason too. So basically they themselves are giving me the right to kill them.
You may say this makes me a candidate for dying too, but then again, I wouldn't just be killing them for petty reasons, I'm killing them because they are threatening other people's right to be happy. All I say is people should be judged by they way they execute judgement on other people.

I think self-defence is entirely acceptable. I doubt if there is anyone who seriously thinks otherwise, aside from overly literalist religious types. (Shazanity's Commandments feature a disclaimer against this kind of interpretation for the benefit of that kind of person, and followers are encouraged to break the rules "on the rare occasion that they fly in the face of all common sense". I think defending yourself or a loved one qualifies there.)

But in the case of people who "don't deserve to live", who gets to make that call? Heaven knows I don't want to.

Slick, the kids' minds are corrupted the moment they set their hand on the mouse. We set the benchmark in being childish, and they follow suit, blindly. Then when they get to sixteen they accuse everyone else of being trendy and conformist and put themselves above it. Then at 20 they realise how foolish they were and start using the internet constructively.

What we need is a digital ID system so we can securely block out kids from areas of the internet we don't want them to be.

England have eased into the Super Eight at the Cricket World Cup. Nothing spectacular: they lost to New Zealand, didn't exactly dominate Canada and barely left cruise control against Kenya. However, considering the events that have befallen Pakistan and India, it could've gone a lot worse.

Teams in the Super Eight

Group Winners: Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, West Indies

Runners Up: South Africa, Bangladesh*, England, Ireland

* Probably. They have to beat Bermuda tomorrow, which given Bermuda's results to date should not be difficult. If they do lose, India go through instead.

By the way, I've been working on the personality of those little hopping box creatures.

Here's what I got so far...

They're called the REVENGE (translated to english).
They're incredibly advanced, and have discovered how to look into the afterlife.
Whatever they saw, it was so beautiful that they all wanted to commit mass suicide in order to travel to the "new world".

However, they decided to make it the very duty of their species as a whole to help other people travel to the afterlife- by killing every mortal being of the world.
Whenever they are about to spread their "love" to another creature, they recite the words of their species:
Through death we create life.
Through murder we create beauty.
Through blood we create happiness.

For those who hath come seeking our love, do not be afraid.
For soon you shall be reborn into the new world.

This is what I do in my spare time. :p

Not seen Hot Fuzz yet, but I'm going to.

Though Shaun Of The Dead has a lot going for it beyond jokes. As ever, I find myself far more emotionally attached to characters in comedies that dramas, and Shaun Of The Dead did a great job there. Also, it's one of the better horror films I've ever seen. (I'm not what you'd call a fan of the genre.)

I'm not sure how well the premise of Hot Fuzz would lend itself to that, but I'm more than willing to give it a chance. I can't see it being a bad film.

Perhaps the current forum for "look at my great drawing I did" and a subforum for "please help me draw because I'm rubbish"?

Shot putt, swimming, maybe the long jump (though I'd back Knuckles to take that...)

Kirby takes the Long Jump, I'd reckon, as he can fly. I don't think the rules of the longjump preclude flight as it's usually assumed athletes can't fly. Hammer Brothers take the hammer throw. Swimming certainly, because Sonic can't swim, although there's the question of whether Mario is allowed to wear his powerup suits...

Paul.Power
29 Mar 2007, 11:03
Sonic and swimming has always puzzled me.

He sinks straight to the bottom, so he must be wearing lead boots.

But then he runs really fast outside the water.

Maybe he's so DAMN FAST that, if he didn't wear lead boots, he'd go into orbit.

Although that doesn't explain Sonic Labyrinth, where the Doc tricks him into wearing slow-down boots.

Anyway, Tails and Knuckles would also both have a chance in the swimming: Tails' flight translates to a kind of doggy-(foxy-?)paddle underwater, and Knuckles' gliding something similar.

Mario does still have the advatage though that he's Batman and he can breathe in space he can breathe underwater.

I'm just wondering why EA Canada are top.

Traveller's Tales are the leading UK-based developer on that list. Blimey, they've come a long way since Sonic 3D. I guess having Lego Star Wars helped rather, though.

Aren't they responsible for the constant rehashes of EA Sports games?

edit: After a quick poke around their website, yep. They make FIFA, as well as NBA Live, NHL, and a few others. Looks like they're also responsible for NFS Underground, James Bond, and the EA Sports BIG games.

I find it more interesting that Yuke's is at 8 (ahead of EA Redwood Shores and Ubisoft Montreal), given that the only English-language games they've developed are D1 Grand Prix and the WWE wrestling games. I certainly can't imagine that the latter has much penetration outside of America, so D1 Grand Prix must have been insanely successful in the UK last year.

The point is not "the internet has no grounds to complain"; it is "isn't it pleasingly ironic that the internet is angry at an artist for stealing their work?"

That's not AGP or PCI-E, that's VGA and DVI. AGP and PCI-E are two ways how your card hooks into the computer; VGA (blue) and DVI (white) are two monitor hookups. VGA is analog while DVI is digital so they are incompatible, but most video cards will include an adaptor that will allow you to hook up a VGA monitor to a DVI port.

You have to do some massive diluting to say that 'the internet is angry that an artist is stealing its work'. The picture wasn't under the GNU License. The picture wasn't open source. It's still copyright theft. It's exactly the same crime, say, from a legal standpoint, as downloading someone's song for free. The internet, famed stealer of copyrighted works, is angry that its copyrighted works have been stolen.

Well, I don't know. I think it's quite different.
If you download music in MP3 format and haven't bought it and don't own an original CD, you're actually using the music unlicensed.

That guy obviously committed plagiarism and made money from it.
Same as all those bootleg brand clothing or Rolex watches that use cheaply made and often easily recognizable labels.

Not the same I'd say.
Because if you load the webpage with the original artists work, the browser actually has already downloaded the image for you to be able to view it.
And this sort of downloading definitely isn't the same as if you download an MP3 file.

(Although, AFAIK, here in Austria downloading stuff isn't technically illegal, only providing the material is.)

Nope, it's true.

The paragraph "Sonderproblem Tauschbörsen" (special problem file-sharing) here:
http://www.internet4jurists.at/urh-marken/urh01.htm#Werknutzungen
(It's in German, but I won't even try translating juristic texts, so you'd have to believe me.)

Only the uploader is infringing copyrights and is distributing copyrighted material.
The downloader on the other hand is legally allowed to make "private copies" of almost any material (musical notes are an exception for example), if he does not distribute it and does not use it commercially.

In 2003 the right for private copies has been limited in Germany to adapt to the more popular file sharing networks, but this has not been done in Austria.

This means that if you disable the upload in your P2P client, you are perfectly fine not doing anything illegal.
Most of the time it's not possible to do that, thus the legislator believes that it's irellevant, as completely passive users don't seriously affect the author.

Practically, only large-scale uploaders are prosecuted anyway.

FutureWorm

Yes, I'm aware of that. I was really referring to the online community, which is a group capable of doing stuff.
I don't understand where you're trying to go with this. Are you saying that internet communities are not notable for enforcing copyright law? Something Awful, the community that has been responsible for most of the spread of knowledge about this, has strict rules on not discussing illegal filesharing and so forth (as I'm sure you well know). And in terms of the artwork, Shmorky is much too talented of an artist to plagiarize like that.

Copyright is irrelevant, though; it's mostly a matter of integrity. If you burned a CD by your favorite artist for a friend and said that you made the music, the greater tresspass - in my mind, anyway - is the dishonesty. And if you make money off it, that's even worse yet.

Exactly. Using that kind of resolution is ridiculous -- you can't look at them in that resolution, can you? Except a tiny bit at a time.

I think this man is insane.

I hope he didn't take a picture of you with it.

Because if so, you've got a pretty good map of your pores right there.

We've had an awful lot of Lovely Sunny Days here lately, haven't we? I can remember about one wet day in the past two to three weeks, and that was a half-hearted drizzle.

It's making me wonder whether someone's picked up Swansea (wettest city in Britain - it's official (http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/0100news/0200wales/tm_objectid=14140027&method=full&siteid=50082&headline=soggiest-city-in-britain-pays-high-price-for-rain-name_page.html)) and moved it to East Anglia while I wasn't looking.

You should try actually being in East Anglia. Try digging a hole here - it's bad enough that we're on clay (which is hard even when it's soaking wet), but dry clay... you need dynamite to dig down more than a few millimetres.
