Notice that int a=3; line. It does a very important task in that program: wasting at least 4 bytes of memory and adding at least 2-5 nanoseconds to the execution time. Isn't that great? That also explains why the program uses iostream, which creates a bunch of useless objects, slows down the program, and adds at least 300K to the program's size. Since you are trying to go for dis-optimization there, you might as well add while(1); somewhere in the beginnning.

Actually that's the code Dev C++ displays when you edit the syntax colors. It's meant only to show an example of said coloring scheme.

Yes, but apart from the filesize it doesn't matter about the execution time on a program that small.

If he was writing an OpenGL engine or something you'd have a point, but as it is, that's just being picky and silly.

Nobody would trust a programme under about 500K anyway, so it is quite important.

Arrrg!!

Stupid outsourced-to-india tech support! 4 out of the 5 paragraphs were auto-generated and had abolutely nothing to do with my problem!!!! (This is only the latest bit...I've been struggling here for a while now...)

Dear FreeWebs User,

The two files looked almost identical to me. I believe that everything is working fine. You might be experiencing a browser incompatibility. Please view the information below. If the problem still exists, please notify us again, this time with more specific information about what you see when you click on index.htm as opposed to what you should see. Again, the files were identical on my computer.

We have found that the majority of our users have problems editing their site if they have Norton Security running. There is not problem with the software (we use it ourselves), but if your settings are not configured correctly, you will run into problems. Specifically, disable the ad-blocker if you have it active.

Furthermore, FreeWebs is built for PC's running Internet explorer 5.5 and higher and Macintosh/Unix computers running Mozilla 1.5 or higher. Users using other browsers may experience some difficulties with our site.

Also make sure you are not running any popup blocking software while using FreeWebs. Some users have contacted us about not having known they had a pop-up blocker that was linked to their Google Toolbar, but was restricting their editing capacity.

Another problem may have to do with your security settings. Open your browser, then click on: Tools -> Internet Options
Click on the security tab, and then click on the Red Icon where it says "Restricted Sites", then click on the "Sites" button. Browse through your Restricted Sites list (if there are any listed there) and be sure freewebs.com is not listed there. If it is, click on it, and then click remove to remove it from your restricted sites list. If you run SpyBot Search & Destroy, this list may keep getting repopulated every time you use their software.

Lastly, are you backing up your site content? If not, then you should be as a responsible Web Developer. Simply select File/Save on your browser for each of your site pages. In the event that content is lost, you will be able to quickly restore it.

Best Regards,
FreeWebs

Oh, they're easy. Basically, they store a memory address. You can set that to the address of any variable, an arbitrary one (though that tends to crash things if you're not VERY careful how you use it), or you can allocate some memory and point it at that. It's a good idea to free that memory later or else you'll get a memory leak, which is a Bad Thing To Have. Then you can use the pointer as if it were a variable located at the address it points at.

One upshot of this is: If you write a function that uses a pointer for one of its variables, you can pass it the address of any variable in your code (of the appropriate type, at least), and it can modify that variable. You can then pass it another address and it will modify that variable. They also make convenient arrays.

They're great.
I've been watching vast amounts of Peter Kay recently.
I tried that and it made me hate him.

Would you deem Celcius sensible, or would it have to be Kelvin for you?
Celcuis is far more sensible scale than Kelvin for most purposes. Water freezes at 0 and boils at 100. Let me tell you how Farenheit works:

0F is the temerature at which SALT water freezes. Very useful.
100F is the temperature of freshly drained blood. Go figure.

Using temperatures from -5 to about 40 is a lot easier for most purposes than ones from 268 to 313, so Kelvin isn't really useful for non-scientific purposes. But people should be aware that saying "twice as hot" doesn't scan in Celcius.

I think a temperature scale with 0 as room temperature and -1000 as absolute zero would be cool. Or maybe -500. The point is it's based on something sensible, and it'd be useful because, well, cold would be -, hot would be +.

Cool dream:

Sarah, (my little sister) my dad and I were at this rich party of some kind if in big city (like Chicago), and then we went into this room for laser tag, and there was this mean kid that was wearing a black shirt with orange writing on it. This laser tag room was on the outer side of the building and on the corner, so two of the walls were made out of glass. From the room, you could see this house was waaaaay up high on stilts, and suddenly, the attention of my dream snapped to Molly Elsworth. She was up on top of the house thing because she had forgotten an assignment up there. My music teacher, Mrs. Borton, was up there helping her get it. Suddenly, I was Molly, but I was still me. I had taken Molly’s place. Then we started trying to figure out how to get down. It was miles up high, and I was scared of jumping. Mrs. Borton started trying to persuade me to jump. Someone suggested parachutes and I said “No, I’ve heard it’s stupid to parachutes in big cities because of all the weird wind.” Then, Mrs. Borton told someone to throw up a parachute, but it didn’t go up high enough and slid back down the roof of the house. Mrs. Borton tried to persuade me to jump. I didn’t want to, and then someone threw up a parachute again. And it made it. It was one of those “traditional” parachutes. Suddenly, Mrs. Borton was my sister. She was Mrs. Borton, but she was still her. She got a more modern parachute. We jumped off the building, and we were flying, gliding, and it was so fun! Then my shoe started to fall off. I didn’t want to hit anyone, so I tried to angle my shoe so it wouldn’t fall. Sarah’s shoe was falling off, too. She shouted up at me “Help! I’m falling!” So a banked over to a parking garage and held onto the edge. She dropped her parachute and clamped onto my leg. Then she climbed up me into the parking garage. I pulled myself up, by using the various concrete ledges around me. I had lost my parachute, too. I noticed my parachute was gone, and Sarah told me when she was climbing up me, she knocked it out of my hands. Then this little kid “agent” dude came up and asked if we’d seen anyone suspicious. I said “Yeah. There was the kid with a black shirt with orange writing on it.” (I could tell what the shirt said was important in the dream, but I’ve forgotten it now.) The agent then helped us down into this hilly area just right next to the parking garage. There were some mood rings (somehow they were all mine and Sarah’s) in the grass. Sarah walked about 5 feet away, but was still “in” my dream. The agent asked “Why do you wear those mood rings? Integrated communication?” There were several mood rings. They were different colors, some brown and black, others green and blue. Some were chipped and worn and the color messed up, and I picked the best one and it was my mood ring. I said “There isn’t a logical reason.” Then I woke up.

Any ideas as to what this might mean?

Not really. I've *never* learnt C directly, I went straight into C++. Yes, I could quite easily write a C application, but I've always gone for C++.

Through learning C++ you will understand C. Any good C++ tutorial will teach you C stuff as you go along.

If you learn C, and then try to learn C++, some of it will seem awkward and you'll have to "unlearn" some stuff you have learnt because there's better ways to do it or it's deprecated or whatever.

And a good console app compiler would be "Dev C++" by Bloodshed. It can also compile C applications afaik. It should do.

Get GCC. ;)

The Microsoft offering, if you want it, is the Visual C++ Toolkit.

And if you're doing fairly advanced Windows programming, you'll want the Platform SDK.

Add a "press any key" delay. The MSDOS window is not, in fact, a DOS prompt but a Windows console, which is like a sort of Windows prompt. When the programme ends, it closes.

If you use XP you can open a console window and run the programme from there instead, and you will regain control when the programme ends but still see its output.

And by the way, it is better to declare all variables you'll beusing right away, so that you know how much memory you are using.

Ignore me, I'm just being picky. As is K^2. Admittedly, this will be good advise in the future when you're writing huge programs, so it might be a good idea to get used to it now.

Wow.

Last night I dreamt I was changing the water in my fishtank. :p

Adding extra libraries is never a good idea. If this is a DOS or Lynux program, I'd even recomend getting rid of all of the libraries and use ASM inserts for IO and the pause thing. And no, it isn't difficult to do at all, and your program would probably end up 10 times smaller. What is it now? 300KB just because you included the iostream?

Compiles to 252KB with Visual Studio .NET 2003.

And he's doing basic code K^2. If you start throwing ASM inserts then you're just going to cause confusion. I know you know more C++ than him, but starting with ASM inserts would be silly. And even if you did, I don't care - For the majority of people, it's easier to use iostream and cout etc at first, and then learn how to make the size and speed decent when it actually matters.

252KB is a huge ammount of space for a program, though. I've written OpenGL programs with 3D graphics which where smaller than that.

I think it should be illegal to teach people cin/cout without explaining how they work, and that is object oriented programming, far too advanced for the beginners. The problem is that a person doesn't really learn to program. I'm not sure what one learns, but it isn't anything of use. ASM inserts are the best way to go here, because it is easy to see what exactly happens: you ask the operating system to interupt the flow of the program to take input or produce output, and then the program returns to normal flow. Not completly transparent due to OS, but nothing can be done here, unless you want to code your own OS. Granted, this is no longer true under Windows, the interupts of which are burried somewhere deep inside the kernel32 libraries. However, at this stage in learning programming, it is better to forget completly the fact that C++ exists and learn to program in C, using C standart libraries. For IO, including File IO, that would be the stdio library, since it is the simpliest thing to understand, due to the fact that it only uses functions and not objects.

In short, forget iostream for now, learn stdio first.

The plane Π which has equation:

meets the line l which has equation

r = (3i+5j+k) + t(2i+6j-k)

in the point P.

a) Find the coordinates of P
b) Find the shortest distance of Π from the origin O.
The line m passes through the point P and the point Q, where
-->
OQ = 4i + 7j
c) Determine a vector which is perpendicular to both of the lines l and m.

I watched the presidential debates. Kerry crushed Bush like a bug. Bush said "It is a hard job" 11 times and he repeated just about everything all the time. He stumbled on his words and he paused many times. Kerry was by far superior and obliterated Bush.

Bush also said he knows he'll win because he knows he'd be a better president. What a stuck up turd.

I also noticed how Bush continued to accuse Kerry of being a flip flopper after Kerry had defended himself so well.

One might argue that public speaking and international negotiations are vital parts of being President and that Bush has managed to demonstrate a complete ineptitude at one, and by implication the other. For example, I might argue that.

I'd like to know what's wrong with being a flip-flopper, myself. Surely if a piece of evidence come in that contradicts your previous beliefs, then you should change your beliefs (after you've critically examined the evidence to make sure it's watertight, of course).

But this isn't a politics thread. Well, I suppose in a way it is, because it's a thread for everything under the sun. But this topic's lasted nine posts, now. Of course, I guess you have the right to continue discussing it, so maybe I'm just rambling (nothing new there then).

However, I got a fully biased review from the kids at school, who have had conservative politics shoved down their throats since Day 1 by their parents. Poor blokes.

Yeah, I live in a city which is full of conservative Christians. The people at school have no minds. My friends and I play Hunter games in paintball where 1 person gets as much ammo as they can hold and have 5 minutes to hide while everyone else gets 10 shots and tries to hunt them.

The first time I was hunted I decided "screw this" and just stood out in the open. They were standing back deciding what to do, when I charged them. I was hit with the last shot they had - if that last shot had missed, I'd have been able to pick them off. Or more likely, they'd have surrendered.

The second time, I used a very similar tactic. Where before I had stayed a ways away in the open, I hid behind a tree near the waiting point where they were not expecting me and popped out with gun blazing as they walked by. I didn't hit a single person then. All but one ran away into the far away bushes. The other dove behind a tree where he was trapped. It was a thinly leaved tree, so the occasional round could go through. Firing randomly I managed to hit his leg, but the ball didn't break. So I did the same, this time getting him in the crotch.:p The paintball didn't break this time either, so he was still in. But he was no longer holding his gun, and he was obviously in pain, so I had mercy on him and didn't shoot him again. So I went on to the others. I was in a firefight with them when I ran out of all 200 shots I had. I was about to go to the refill station when my path was cut off by the one who'd hid behind the tree. Being surrounded and with no ammo I had no choice but to surrender.:(

So far nobody has won a hunter game.

My dad played paintball on a corporate outing once, much to his chagrin. Apparantly those things really hurt.Once you're hit a few times they don't hurt so much. Except the hand shots. And you indeed don't feel the mask shots.

Do you get, as it were, boxes when you play?Err... Not really. It generally isn't a problem - usually only your hands and head are exposed. And sometimes your legs. He chose a sapling of a tree, so he was basically out in the open.

It's evil! One Kanji on its own can have one or two meanings - Example is the two Kanji that make up "Japan". (Nihon).

The first one means "sun", the second "book" or "base".

Put them together and the meaning changes totally.

Take in mind theres hundreds of thousands of Kanji characters, and I can see why it's bloody hard to learn!

It makes perfect sense in those examples, but I know that with some of the rarer Kanji (rather than the stuff used in day to day writing like my examples) some of it, although it will all in some crazy way make sense, is hard to get the meaning because they link them together in quite abstract ways.

Go into pratice mode and select a character and a female with a skirt (eg Cassandra). Select the map below the random map select and then start the map. When the map is started go into practice options and search throught there until you can find a menu with "guard, crouch, etc" and then select "Down"then "Facing Down". Go round the back of the character and use a move that can create a lot of updraft. After a few attempts Cassandra's skirt should be flying like a kite!

Considering wind power has finally reached the point making it cheaper than coal, we should ditch oil and gas for our homes altogether. We curently have enough useable windy area to power the country, and with new turbine technologies that can harvest wind blowing in any direction we'll soon have a good surplus of power.

It's my opinion it's worth going into more debt to invest the money required to switch to wind.
