Go Plasma.

Is it really 0.333333333... or does it stop somewhere? Like ...3333337 for example? That would mean it does come to 100 when multiplied by 3, wouldn't it? Just that we can't comprehend it all because the number is so long, so we just assume it. Does a computer have a limited character memory, which is why it multiples back to 0.999... instead of 100?

You appear to be missing the fundamental principle of mathematics, and the fundamental difference between it and science.

Science: The universe is complex, and therefore we can never get a precise answer.
Mathematics: We need a precise answer. Let's simplify the universe.

The mathematical concept of 0.333... cannot end in ...3337. Why not? Because we said it can't when we described it as 0.333... . It's not a case of assuming that it goes on forever. This isn't a complex physical object. This is a simple, abstract number that has only the properties we give it, and no others. We tell 0.333... what it is. It doesn't tell us.

When you're attempting an impossible task there's really very little difference between the two.

Maths is. There's no why, or how, or when. There's just is. You can't apply questions like "what if" to it (except in lemmas, which are a very different kettle of fish).

There are always some things that haven been proven or disproven, and of course there's always the spectre of Gödel's theorem.

However, 0.9~ = 1 is something that is proven, straight from the axiomatic definition of a limit.

I would say my job isn't really quite bad, but oh boy they really do try.
In addition to having to deal with stupid customers witouth being able to tell them they are stupid, we are being requested to use some "phrases" that I happen to think are just completely idiotic, and quite redundant.
When opening the call, it's "I'll gladly help you with ___ during this call!". If I don't say "during this call" it goes against my score. Not so bad tho.
Then at the end of the call it's "Is there anything else I can do for you today, because I'm interested that you are satisfied with this call?". Boy does that sound fake when I say it.
If "no", then "Did we resolve your issue/question during this call?" which is quite redundant to ask: -"Is there any other question?" -"No." -"Did I resolve all your questions?" -"DOH?"... I mean, seriously.
If "yes", then "Did we resolve it in your first call?"
If "yes", then "Thanks for calling ____ where we resolve your issue on your FIRST CALL!"

Really, that's too many questions. The customer usually ends like "yeah yeah ok yeak good bye... yeah yeah... goodbye... no really that's everything goodbye OH FOR GODS SAKE JUST LET ME HANG UP"... well they don't really say that, but you can really tell they are thinking that...

Angelus: I can relate entirely. When I worked for NTL I used to have to say some really, really stupid stuff. I also had to:

Remind customers about a non-Direct Debit charge.
Remind customers about the Late Payment penalty fee.
Remind customers about possible restriction of services if they don't pay their bill on time.
Promote Direct Debit! Would you like to set up a Direct Debit? Why not? ...Oh, the threats I just made? Oh, those weren't... hello? Hello...?

There was also a point where we had to start giving out our full names at the start of the call. That stopped after an irate customer B4USearch'd someone in our call centre and beat him up on his way home from work. Although having rung Virgin Media again recently it seems this policy has been reinstated...

MtlAngelus
28 May 2007, 08:01
It's suposed to be this way because we are low on first call resolution scores and stuff, but seriously, how is this gonna help at all? How about, I don't know, properly train people for their jobs? 99% of the calls are billing complaints, half of them because someone either screw up the account or provided wrong information.
"Yes sir you can roam in Mexico, your plan has roaming included!"... no really, this happened once.
Not much I could do there, the charges were ridiculously high, he did make the calls, and even tough he was missinformed at store, common sense dictates that international roaming will never be included with your plan, and just that general spread information [bill, web, ads, etc] indicates that roaming included means INSIDE the US... plus it's the type of thing you'd rather double-check before you go on and use.

On another note, I was watching some internet videos with high use of profanity and double entendres, just having general fun, when my dad starts getting all ****ed. Then he starts rambling that I should turn the volume down. Which was set high only because he had the tv volume ridicously high(Seriously, he does that a lot, gets home, turns the tv with stupidly high volume, then wanders off and does something else. I turn the tv off and when he notices the tv is off, comes back to turn it on, and wanders off again...). Which I pointed out to him. Then he rambled something about how I shouldn't be watching this type of videos, to which I replied "It's just sound, get over it.". He then rambled something about it being the same as drugs, and something that I could interpret as me going to hell for it. So yeah I had some fun today. :D

In a related topic, I think it was good for Google to agree to China's rules just so they could get in. There are bound to be ways the censor stuff can be circumvented. And when the country builds up dependence on the service it'll have more bargaining power.

EDIT: In something vaguely related, Chester's going to have this special camera that recognises signs of body language indicative of dodgy behaviour. Some people think this is an infringement on privacy rights and it's another step closer to 'the nanny state' and Big Brother, but I say if it weren't for things like these, some of us might not be here today because of armed robberies gone wrong, muggings and Terrorism. And it keeps dodgy people like drug dealers and users out of highly-populated areas. Put face recognition in and proven criminals and suspects can be found more easily. Sometimes I wonder if books like 1984 and similar fictional real world-based work didn't exist, if some of us would be as paranoid as we are.

I think people would be less paranoid, because if people didn't have phrases like "big brother", "1984", and "little nazi hitlers" they's have to construct their own sentences, and that would mean opening their brains for a moment to think about the things they're saying. That along would probably help.

That's what I think, anyway.

Changing isn't curing. There's a world of difference. I can change someone whom has cancer's health status by stabbing them in the chest, but it wasn't a particularly good cure. (Terrible analogy, but I just woke up damnit).

So I got a message today when I arrived to work. Either someone's trying to play a prank on me, or I have a fan. :p
Basicaly, we have this internal website to check your schedule, for breaks, lunch time, and stuff. To login you use your employee number both as Username and Password, and it's not hard to find out someone's employee number, so you can check any persons schedule just by knowing their employee number. You can also change useless things like colour layout and the greeting name( a message that displays "Hi, [name]" on the top right corner)
I had my name set as "Bye", so it displayed "Hi, Bye" and a blue-ish colour layout(no black :().
So today I login to check my schedule, and my colour layout is all pinkish and the greeting displays "Hi, I Like you!"... I'm guessing it's just a prank tho.

Anyway, I changed the message to "No you don't". :P

Jumpin' Jack Flash in Hard ROCK mode on Elite Beat Agents is by FAR the most insanely difficult challenge I have ever come across in any game ever.

I must have attempted it WELL over 100 times at this point, possibly even 200. I still haven't beaten it.
It is damn lucky that the song is so good and that I can skip cutscenes. If it wasn't and I couldn't, I would've thrown my DS against a wall by now.

Basically, the game designers made the WONDERFUL decision to make the life bar constantly decrease, EVEN WHEN YOU AREN'T DOING ANYTHING.
It's manageable on the earlier stages, but by the last one, it decreases so fast that even after perfectly completing a number of sections in a row, your life bar is still in EXACTLY the same position, and then it decreases even more.

It makes it almost impossible to win unless you play perfectly.
Oh, and all of the beats are small and fast, too.

And I loved the game up to this.
Difficult is not fun. It is the polar opposite. What infuriates me is that if there is a sequel, I'm guessing the last stage is going to be even harder than the one now, because no one is going to call them out on this and make them get rid of that damned life-bar decrease rate.

WHY do people like things to be hard?
I think I need to write another essay-type-thing on this.

I've been looking at transport to get me to Heathrow on the morning of my flight. I compared the rail service with National Express, and while National Express is cheaper they don't get me to the airport as early as I'd like. By train, I can get there at 7:10am, which is ideal. My flight leaves at 11:30am and there's a 2.5 hour check-in but I want to make sure that I'm there and checked in and I can sit comfortably knowing that I'm at the right terminal waiting outside the right gate for the right plane.

The closer I get to the day I go, the more nervous I get.

Well, the nosegear has its own two-wheeled bogey, and on most aircraft that retracts forwards into an unpressurised area either just behind the radome or just beneath the cockpit (or both!).

So yes, aircraft do have bogeys up their noses.

Paint won't run, and GIMP keeps throwing up weird error messages and won't display thumbnails.

EDIT: And now GIMP quit randomly on me. And it won't restart: clicking on the icon does nothing.

EDIT: Notepad won't start. Same error message form as Paint:

"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

'Cept I have no idea of how to go about reinstalling Notepad or Paint.

I was just about to produce a new MAPP and all.

Oh, well, maybe a restart'll cure it.

No where near as many as you'd think. I only have 71 reports in my trash (which I last emptied on the 4th of March '07) - on average it seems about one every other day. But sometimes we can go weeks without getting any, then get a dozen in a day.

Because sometimes I feel like "Aw, someone else will report that", but then I wonder if someone WON'T, because they are thinking the same thing I am.

Just report it - I'm sure neither Andrew or I will mind. Andrew uses GMail, and I doubt he's near his 2.8Gb limit, and I have about 40Gb of storage left on my hard drive, so that's not a problem :p

Plus if people report posts, it means we actually know the post report system is working!! Had a period once where we had about a month with no post reports - we didn't know if the system was broken or not.

*plays more Wii Sports Baseball*

...

I'm sorry, but I just don't seem to get baseball. I've tried, I've been as patient as I possibly can (and I'm a cricket fan. No-one can outdo us for patience). I appreciate that it is basically cricket with the advantages reversed in favour of the fielding side rather than the batting side so that everyone can go home at a timely hour. I appreciate that, like cricket, it can be a game that is interesting on a wide variety of levels - skilful, tactical, psychological and strategic. I appreciate that, like cricket, it has a large number of juicy stats, always a good thing in a sport as far as I'm concerned.

But... most people agree with the idea that the exciting part about baseball is the batting, right? And yet as far as I can tell:

70% of the time, the batter misses the ball.
70% of the time he hits it, it goes behind the "foul ball line" (easily the thing that frustrates me most about baseball)
70% of the time he hits it legitimately, it goes straight to a fielder and he's out, caught or run out, because it's a ridiculously long way to first base and the fielders have giant gloves on to take all the pain out of catching.
70% of the time it doesn't go straight to a fielder, he scores a single or a double, which doesn't count as an actual point on the board unless he gets all the way round, and that requires at least one of his mates to go through the same series of percentages.
The remaining 0.81% of the time, he gets a home run.

This does not seem to me to be a rewarding process.

I've just played through three games of Wii Sports Baseball, the equivalent of a full match, with an aggregate of 0-0 at the end to show for it. I did get the occasional run against the AI when I started out, but when facing opponents in the 200-300 Skill Level range, this is pretty much how it always ends up. Oh well, at least I'm a good pitcher (well, I was Random Sport's "leading" rounders pitcher for three years...).

Yes, test match cricket does drag on a bit, this is true. You have to adjust your brain to a very slow and lazy pace to appreciate it fully, and not everyone has the patience to do that. But take one of these new Twenty20 games of cricket. They're about the same length as a baseball match, and more stuff happens. The ball goes out of the park more often, runs come off every ball, bowlers and fielders have to come up with yet more inventive ploys to stop the onslaught and batsmen have to get more inventive to beat them. And you're still more likely to see a bowler take a wicket than a baseball batter to score a run.

I'm almost certainly going to get shouted at, particularly for the 70%s which are more what it feels like than what's actually accurate for the top level of the game, but still. I'm not saying the sport is without merit, it has many admirable qualities, but it just seems set up to frustrate at every turn.

EDIT: A typical innings of me playing WSB, as narrated by That Annoying Voice:

"Strike!"
"Foul Ball!"
"Foul Ball!"
"Foul Ball!"
"Foul Ball!"
"Foul Ball!"
"Strike!"
"Batter Out!"
"Foul Ball!"
"Foul Ball!"
"Foul Ball!"
"Foul Ball!"
"You're Out!"
"Foul Ball!"
"Strike!"

I think you missed the joke. :p

AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!

300 Game Mechanics dies after 50 :( (http://www.squidi.net/three/index.php)

I was going to write a RealVG article about it at some point and all.

Oh, well, I guess I still can.

EDIT:

baseball rant

Okay, I just had another go at Wii Baseball following some time in practice mode. I managed to hit double, single, home run with the first three batters. The rest of the game was scoreless (aside from hitting an unconverted double and an unconverted single at some point) and I won 3-0.

I still don't get it though.
