I gots me Lego Chess, Lego Loco and Lego Creator.

The first was a decent chess game, but no customisation. Two sets were minifigures. The third was a stylish recreation of the traditional Staunton pieces in Lego.

Loco was a bit irritating. Like Sim City, but was useless without internet, really.

Creator was fun, but there was a weird bug where the pieces would all suddenly slide off into infinity.

None of them work on XP or Win2k, since they don't work on NT.

I have Lego Creator, Lego Racer and Lego Stunt Rally.

Lego Creator was too damn slow and screwy the time I got it. It was fun blowing stuff up though.

Lego Racer is a pretty good game, there's not many of the sort nowadays, it's all realistic and crap.

Lego Stunt Rally is a kids games. Or at least, even a kid could beat it, since it doesn't require much more effort than accelerating and braking. Yes, you don't even need to steer, the game does it for you.
Oh, and you get to unlock track pieces and make your own tracks.

Yeah, it's ok. Not worth the $40 though. Maybe when it goes down to $20.
Get this- the princess gets...omfg KIDNAPED.
Why don't people make up more origanal story? They could simply change it, like having the Mushroom kingdom go to war with another. Mario could lead the way or somthing. I don't care, anything than "omfg teh pinsess iz kidnap'd an iz in anoter casel." for the 100th time.
And why does Sonic have to get the chaos emeralds every game, If he got them all in the previous?

Meteos?
Advance Wars: Dual-strike?
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow?
i just noticed that both of the subtitles have the acronym DS. How clever.

That's what I'd start with.
Though I'm not quite one to lecture someone on game choices. I'm all over the place, usually. And I doubt that many people love Meteos as much as I do...

And hell, it's a better selection than the PSP. I know of a whopping 2 games I'd want for it.

And for the record, I thought Super Mario RPG is vastly overrated. Say what you want, I didn't like it nearly as much as most people do...
Maybe I should play it again. See if my opinions have changed since then.

Where'd the fun be in that?

The whole point of the game is that it's nothing more or less than a new Super Mario Brothers game. Almost everything is as it was in the original NES/SNES games -- from the flagpoles and castles right down to the distinctive way Mario stands. Why change the plot? It's worked well enough for slightly over two decades -- Mario Brothers I and III are the top selling two games of all time -- and it's as distinctive a part of the series as collecting mushrooms or going down pipes.

Anyone who plays Mario games for the story is an idiot.

SupSuper
17 Jul 2006, 13:05
Well Mario Forever (http://www.softlab.gda.pl/~buziol/english/viewpage.php?page_id=17) changed the story and it's still the best fanmade Mario game ever.

AndrewTaylor
17 Jul 2006, 13:23
That's just it -- the plot doesn't affect anything. If the game had a totally different plot it would be no worse and no better. You'd just be changing it for the sake of changing it. Why should it change? There's no reason. Why should it stay the same? Because it's a Mario Brothers game -- it's supposed to be the same as the old Mario Brothers games, but portable, and with new levels, and new powerups, and new enemies, and improved graphics, and so forth. The game concept is exactly the same as it was back in the eighties -- and that's the beauty of it.

It's New Super Mario Brothers, not Mario DS.

Odd. It was quite fun, it actually showed the personality of the characters, showed a more humane side of Bowser, and had some pretty neat graphics, not to mention characters... Oh and the music was awesome too... And it had a great storyline.

I didn't realy enjoy SMRPG much at all.

The story was poorly explained, the characters charmless and the graphics lifeless. The enviroments, beyond a few boxes, never realy felt like they belonged in a mario game at all, as did most of the enemies and bosses.

In fact even mario didn't feel like he belonged in a mario game. He didn't jump right and the isometric viewpoint sucked the fun right out of the platform elements.

The actual battles were workable, but in no way fun. Although the action comands where a nifty adition (nifty enough to be carried over to the paper maios and mario and luigis) But in this game they were poorly implemented. The game gave no indication as to the correct timing.

The problem was that I played it on a crappy emulator, as nintendo decided not to release it over here. I also played it long after I played the sublime Paper Mario, which in my opinion blows SMRPG out of the water in just about every aspect.

Yes, even plot. I found the whole star rod thing a lot more interesting than the big sword thing and all that forgettable crap in SMRPG.

And yes, The koopa bros are miles better than the overused axem rangers.:p

So there.

BTW, I am quite a big RPG fan.

Well, it must be the fact that you played it so long after and in an emulator.
I had the fortune to play it right when the N64 came to existence(went to blockbuster and rented the game thinking it was the one advertised in tv, which was actually Super Mario 64 :p), and I loved it, even tough I wasn't quite an RPG fan, and even tough it wasn't the game I was specting :p.
3 days passed and I had to return the game... So I asked for it in Christmas and lo and behold, I got it. (My family loved me back then).

Back then it was truly the best game I had played so far, and that's probably why I still love it so much, even tough it may indeed be flawed.

About the graphics being charmless, I agree that the characters might be stiff, but I just loved the style they implemented. Watching Mario trying to explain things was truly hilarious. They made the best out of the fewest animations.

On a slightly or perhaps not so related note, did you know that a meter is defined to be the distance traveled by light in 0.000000003335640952 seconds, as messured by a cesium clock?

Plutonic

Having been about to say that that sounded right but that I didnt beleive it to be the correct definition, I have wiki'd it to find that its the 17th re-definition of the metre... doesnt seem a very usefull way of defining it though, the original based on pendula is at least something that can be worked out with a watch and peice of string. (you know for those lost-on-a-desert-island-with-a-watch-and-some-string-and-having-an-argument -over-the-length-of-a-hammock sort of moments)

The speech bubbles are not unnecessary or complicated. The story wouldn't make sense without them. How complicated is a picture of what the character is suggesting and an exclamation mark? The words that are used are few and short. If a kid can't read he can learn those words. A small child isn't guaranteed to fully get the meaning of anything they see when they're that young, anyway.

When an ODEON came to your town all those years ago, it did wonders for it. Now all the mums, kids, old people and everyone else will have to trudge to a retail park a few miles away. I dislike night clubs and the **** wholes they attract. Plenty of people have been stabbed outside Brannigans (that's probably why they keep refitting and rebranding it).

Fair enough. Maybe it was a bit unfair of my to infer that American TV shows are inferior and that's the reason we tend not to watch them. I thought it was a pretty heavy implication but I guess I could have been wrong.

There can't be "lots" and "few" of the same thing. Come on, you're meant to be a grammar nazi.

There are lots, as in a large number, of good American TV shows.
Relative to the total number of American TV shows, the number of American TV shows which are good is low.

Well, no, it isn't. Not least because Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is made there too, so logically the worst of American TV must be at least as bad as that.

Did it originate there, then? I thought they nabbed the idea from us. If they did then that's bad British TV being shown in America, not the other way round. If not then it's just a bad example in an otherwise valid point.

Then don't watch those programmes!

I don't. That's my point exactly. There are often American shows I'd rather watch than those. I was countering your claim that "we don't tend to bother actually watching them".

You don't judge TV by the worst of it, you judge it by the best. This is because they best is probably aimed at people like you and the worst is probably aimed at people wholly unlike you.You can't say "I don't like a programme that I'm not supposed to like therefore the producers are bad". It's like criticising a car for tasting bad.

You've lost the point of what we're discussing. The best of TV is sometimes American, sometimes British. The worst of TV is sometimes American, sometimes British. It can even be both at the same time but again, that's beside the point. The point is we get a lot of American shows and often end up watching them because it's either the best thing on or it's something we actually want to watch in favour of something from somewhere else.

Well, looking at it it was. I should have been clearer, but I didn't expect a sort of Spanish Inquisition. But I still hold out that American TV is far, far worse than British TV, based largely on the facts that (a) I can think of at least as many good programmes we have as they have and they make more, (b) Americans tell me this is true.

But...Did it originate there, then? I thought they nabbed the idea from us. If they did then that's bad British TV being shown in America, not the other way round. If not then it's just a bad example in an otherwise valid point.
No. That's just flat-out wrong.

If an American company spends American dollars making a programme in America for American TV and an American audience, that is American TV. Yes, they might have bought the idea from us, but all that proves is what we already know: Americans are rubbish at thinking up quiz shows. That's why there are probably less than five US quiz shows you can think of and more than fifty British ones. It's a programme made in America and shown on American TV. You can't say it "doesn't count" (and if you can, please stop blaming Britain for Big Brother, which was an idea devised by Endemol, who are Dutch). Americans made the decision to buy it, and to make it, and to show it. Any alterations they made to the format were also their ideas. Buying a bad idea is no better than concocting it.

If it was just our show being shown in America then you'd be right. But it's their own version. I believe they've launched an even tackier version where the top prize is two million dollars. I'm not taking the blame for that, nor for their godawful Red Dwarf pilot.

Vader
5 Aug 2006, 14:10
Buying a bad idea is no better than concocting it.

Exactly. Britain came up with the idea, America bought it. The show is as **** here as it is there. It was invented here and it is ****. Besides which it's a moot point.

I'm gonna boil this discussion right down:

Yes, but we have the BBC.

We get a lot of American shows, but we tend not to bother actually watching them.

We do indeed get the BBC and a lot of us actually find ourselves watching American TV shows in favour of British. Sometimes we even watch American TV shows on the BBC, such as The Simpsons.

What you said is a bold, sweeping generalisation which, at the very least, does not apply to me. I just thought I'd point that out. I didn't expect a debate over it.

I'm not sure that's quite it. I meant to say that while crap American TV shows like Walker Texas Ranger are frequently shown here they're rarely watched, becuse we have so many programmes made here that are better, and because we have ITV cooking up home-grown crap, so why would anyone watch them, other than to laugh at them?

And this is true -- you can't argue that "we tend not to watch [crap American shows like Walker Texas Ranger]" is not true, because viewing figures repeatedly tell us that it is. That's why it's not shown any more. The misunderstanding was that you thought I meant that this was true of all American shows. I watch some American shows (although in the case of 24 increasingly just to laugh at them).

Oh, and it wasn't a "bold, sweeping generalisation" because it included the word "tend". It doesn't include everybody or all American imports. To be honest, we tend not to watch the majority of American imports anyway -- just look at Sky's channel guide, we get things like abc1 and FX, which show nothing but American TV, and damn near nobody ever watches either.

And you didn't get a debate over that. You got a debate about the fact that you said "Besides, even the bad American TV is better than Big "**** OFF!" Brother, How Messy Are My Fat Child's Top 10 Fashion Victims, Who Wants To Be A Quarter-of-a-Millionaire and Noel's House Party", all of which is wrong. The worst of American TV is **** like King Of Queens and nobody, not even those involved with the production of King Of Queens and their immediate families, could say that was better than Big Brother or Noel's House Party or Millionaire. Those were all good shows until they were run into the ground or ruined by comittee thinking.

Fair point. Most people would probably rather watch Top Gear than Texas Walker Ranger, I agree with that. As I said before, your post implied that all American TV was crap. I was simply disagreeing with that. We've already gone over that, so let's just leave it be, OK?

And this is true -- you can't argue that "we tend not to watch [crap American shows like Walker Texas Ranger]" is not true, because viewing figures repeatedly tell us that it is. That's why it's not shown any more. The misunderstanding was that you thought I meant that this was true of all American shows. I watch some American shows (although in the case of 24 increasingly just to laugh at them).

Again, you're right. Most people would probably rather watch a bad British programme than Texas Walker Ranger. Again, it was your initial implication which lead me to say what I did. See above.

Ah, I thought you meant nobody has a tendency to watch American TV. I just thought your comment sounded a bit anti-American TV. I don't have a problem with the good stuff, which I happen to think there's plenty of. Unfortunately I often have to watch British rubbish and wish Scrubs was on. They show that on abc1 - it's great.

How is that wrong?

Either it counts when it's nicked or it doesn't. Make up your mind. If it counts, then Big Brother is an offending British programme. If not, then it doesn't count that America also show Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

I don't see many programmes coming from America with a pair of old tarts telling people how to dress, how clean their house is, how to raise their kids, how to spend less money or prodding their faeces. All these types of show fall under the category of "How Messy Are My Fat Child's Top 10 Fashion Victims".

Anyway, I think this is all pretty silly. I thought you were saying all American TV is bad and you weren't. You were saying the bad American TV is worse than the good British TV. Of course, the reverse is also true. It just seems like the comment said nothing if it wasn't commenting on the quality of American TV so I assumed that it was.

My bad, I guess.

AndrewTaylor
6 Aug 2006, 00:33
How is that wrong?
Well, because none of the (real) programmes you listed are anything like as bad as the worst of British or American TV. They're pretty insipid, but they're watchable. They don't make me angry when I watch them, like The Simpsons does these days, and like The Weakest Link does. I'd rather watch any of them than watch the blank screen, and that makes them better than a lot of shows I could mention (if I could think of them right now).
