Having been told many times to "get back on topic", I felt it was time to react :). So presenting the Forums' first, totally off topic thread!

Post about anything and everything. The only caveat I make is that every so often someone goes off at a tangent, to maintain the thread's random, spontaneous nature.

Speaking of chocolate, aren't chocolate vending machines - dumb? If you tap them, even gently while waiting for the chocolate to be dispensed - more than one bar will often come down. They should really do something about that as I'm sure it loses them money. Another interesting fact - if you type 110 (I think...) into a Cadbury's chocolate vending machine, it tells you if anything is wrong with the system, groovy :p

I made an apple pie in Food Technology once (first it was Cookery, then Home Economics, then Domestic Science, and now it's Food Technology), but my favourite thing there was making pizza. I'd have tons of bread dough, then a tiny smear of tomato, then tons of cheese. It tasted great.

Hey, did anyone here know I'm a fish breeder? Well now you know. I breed Rosy Barbs. (Barbus Conchonius) In my breeding tank there was an outbreak of Fin Rot, a fungus which attacks a fish's fins. The fry (baby fish) wheren't strong enough even with medication (I prefer Mela Fix) so there have been casualties. Fin Rot is a terrible disease that mainly attacks long-finned fish. I'm breeding a long-finned variety of Rosy Barb so the disease is even more devastating.

I have a 3600 gallon (3.79 liters=1 gallon) pond in my backyard. I dug it myself. Actually I haven't finished digging it yet. (damn this forum) The dirt is piling up behind and I'm going to put all sorts of flowers and a waterfall on the hill, which is already quite big.

Ah, an excelent question. The probability of me existing is 100%, because I am. So if you would be able to look every where you would see me 100% of the time. But these 100% are spread across the universe (Jai guru de va om...) and most of it here (whereever that is) and very little there. But I either am or am not, I can not 1% be, and therefore behave as a quantomized object. Which in english means that if only 10% of me are in the given point, then you will have 10% chance of finding me there if you look. If you keep searching for me arround and you can't find me, that means very little of me is there. Unfortunatly it works backwards too. There is simply too little of me in UK to participate in that Focus Testing.

There is nothing that kills anything. You have to narrow it down. If you mean life on this little rock that you like to call "Earth" for what ever reason, then it is the beginning. Do you consider viruses living. They aren't, but some people do. You also said small. How small. One cell or many. If you will be a little more specific I can try to think of something.

There is nothing that kills anything. You have to narrow it down. If you mean life on this little rock that you like to call "Earth" for what ever reason, then it is the beginning. Hmm... That is a tough one. Kill bacteria, don't kill fish. It would be easyer other way arround. You might try some sort of bacteriophage. Might kill bacteria needed for fish to survive though. Not sure if effective on fungi either. I don't know enough about fish to know what is harmless to them. Sorry.

It can kill fish. The chemical is in the filter only; I should be able to use activated carbon (not sure if it's actually carbon...:p) which absorbs a lot of chemicals out of water including medication and urine. Unfortunately there's a bacterial colony which converts Ammonia (NH3) to Nitrate (NO3 [I think]). Luckily the bacteria colony (located in the filter) and the activated carbon are in separate cartridges. I might be able to absorb the chemical in a sponge and stick it between the cartridges... (water goes through the bacterial cartridge before the carbon) If you can't help it's not really a big deal.

edit: That's it! I'll introduce viruses which only attack the bacteria! It took me this long to realize what you meant by 'bacteriophage' Maybe even some other virus(s) that kill the fungus!

Be careful chosing the right bacteriophage. Some of them might turn out to be harmful, some useless. Make sure you research the virus, at least on-line, before using it.

You can always geneticaly engeneer one.
Genetical engeneering is fun. We once had an assignment on Bio to engeneer a bacteria that would glow in the dark. We of cource had the source of the RNA that allready contained the required gene. The whole chalenge was to put it into the bacteria's dna. It is not as dificult to do as it sounds. It is however much more dificult to place a gene into the DNA of a multicelular organism.

But realy there should not be any problems. Nobody except biologists are interested in bacteriophages for the same reason you are interested - most of them are harmless to multicelular organisms. (AFAIK, but you can never be sure with viruses) There might be one more problem with phages, they have the lysogenic state where they exist as the part of bacterias genetic code while allowing it to live and multiply. You need to find one that would spend only a few divisions in this state and then always go to lytic state in which it destroyes the bacteria.
