Anyway, hats won't have such a major impact as they have on TF2.
After all, you're only playing multiplayer with one other person at a time, and it's also highly unlikely that you'll play the co-op campaign more than several times until it gets repetitive and boring.
Which means, actually buying and trading hats in Portal 2 is even more useless than in TF2.

That is, unless Valve either add a lot of new co-op maps/challenges or even some new game modes.

The Mortal Kombat demo is seriously impressive shiznatch. It's exactly what the franchise needed -- incredibly high-production-value presentation featuring over-the-top gore of such magnitude that you actually notice it again, and a return to majorly oldschool gameplay, complete with the old every-character-has-the-same-uppercut-and-sweep-kick bit from the first 3 installments. The shortened Fatalities are pretty nice, too, more accessible to your average player instead of only being used by registered wizards, without being a neutered and flavorless wreck like they did in Armageddon. It's like both a reinvention and celebration of the real, oldschool original Mortal Kombat.

The X-Ray attacks are the real attention getter I think, though. They're these super-strong cutscene-style attacks where it'll show cutaway views of your unfortunate victim's skull shattering or organs being stabbed or whathaveyou. Like I said, over-the-top in a way that's just visceral and well-done enough to be awesome somehow. Some of them are shown off in the preview video they have up on the website (www.themortalkombat.com).

Well that would depend what all is running off it. Add up the power requirements of all your components, and if that's less than 430 you're good.

I'm pretty sure they put some margins in for the recommendation to make sure nobody can complain that they met requirements but it doesn't work. they want the requirements to be such that if you meet them, it will work no questions asked, and if you're below spec their asses are covered because they told you so.

ah, bummer. i'd recommend looking around and seeing if you can find an old desktop for cheap or free. someone recently got rid of a computer. i took it off their hands for free, threw an nvidia 9600gt in it, and i was able to play portal 2 at 1280x1024 with all settings on high at a reasonably constant framerate

A Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset. It's basically designed to run your OS and movies and not much else. I didn't really buy this laptop for gaming anyway, but Source engine games are usually really scalable so they've never been much of a problem before. Portal 2 just seems to have way more eye-candy that's hard to disable than the older Source games.

I'm pretty sure the anser is nine. That's basically 6/2*3, and you perform operations left to right, so the division is done first, then the multiplication, so it's 6/2*3=3*3=9.

If you treat ÷ as mod you get 0, like I did at first glance :P

It's because of the order of operations, brackets first, then multiply and divide from left to right. It's basically a trick question anyway, if you were actually trying to write it down properly you'd make it damn clear what you wanted and write it as (6/2)*(1+2).

The trouble is, the order is somewhat ambiguous*. I actually hate any use of the ÷ operator in arithmetic.

This is obviously a trick question.
The problem is, that the ÷ symbol when used to write down formulas in a single line will produce this paradox when not rectified by the use of additional brackets, because there is no standardized rule if the division or the implied multiplication is to be done first.
AFAIK, the "left before right" rule isn't international.

When notating formulas, you should always use fractions for divisions.

Now the issue in our original problem (a÷b×c) isn't really covered by this.
There is not, to my knowledge, a strict order in how you perform multiplication and division. If we treat division as the multiplication of a reciprocal then we're liable to read the above as:
a×1/b×c = (a×c)÷b which corresponds to (6×3)÷2 = 9.
But when you write the problem as a÷bc, it's very natural to read this as a÷(b×c) which is were all the 1 answers come from.

I intentionally worked right-to-left whenever I could. The point is, you have to resolve all brackets (or powers of, or divisions, or whatever) indepedently before you start merging them together - e.g. x^2+y^2 - doesn't matter left-to-right or right-to-left because either way you do both powers before the addition - and in the case of x*y*z/a - then there's ambiguity in the order but only because it makes zero difference what order you do it in.

As for brackets, you do the innermost first, of course. Each bracket has a new BODMAS rule from the beginning.

I guess Terraria is more combat oriented, or something? Your character can be upgraded, so there's some metroid style elements.

I dunno, maybe in a year it'll have been updated into something that I'd want to play myself.

Now this is the real greatest thing.

Terraria:

+ More gamelike, still a sandbox but closer to GTA than GMod, greater sense of progression to new areas.
+ More features, seems to have a smarter and more flexible design/programming philosophy. Greater sense of "functionality", less reliance on the modding community.
+ Can carry a character and their inventory over between singleplayer/multiplayer and different worlds and servers.

Minecraft:

+ More open world, focus very much on making your own entertainment - which, as our elders are always quick to remind us, can be a very good thing.
+ More scope for player creativity and doing "art for art's sake", easier to just mess around in.

I'm always skeptical of open world games, because so few ever manage to do it right. DF works great because it's still a very focused game despite the vast scale and jumbled assets/stats. I've never plaued adventure mode though. It's just really hard to make a huge world intrresting. Terratia looks like a fairly focused game though so It may very well be fun. But it looks really uggly :p (not beatiful like Dwarf Fortress!)

I discovered two player mode in Lemmings! Me and a friend were playing emulated snes version, but it's slightly broken. Can anybody recommend a better version for two player?
Problem with the snes version is that you can't reset levels or surrender. Both players need all their lemmings be cleared from the map before the game ends, including blocker lemmings. And there's no nuke button.
I had wasted all my bombs on suicide bombing my opponents bridges because I most of my lemmings had gone to his goal, and then I had no more bombs to remove my blocker lemmings, so the game was stuck and we had to reset the entire game.

Still, works great with two players. At first we just tried to sabotage each others progress, but it became really random who won. You always need to cross each others paths so trying to play cooperatively but still win (by not sabotaging too much) made the game more fun.

Edit: Maybe this should go into the dedicated Lemmings forum. But post outside OD? Blasphemy!

I think there is a nuke button, but both players have to activate it at once - have both players hover over the blue/green boxes above the toolbar.

I just bought a Nikon D3100 DSLR camera today. All I need now is a tripod.

Cool. Make sure you can get it pretty steady though Even with a tripod, a long exposure shot on a dark night can turn out quite blurry. So get a heavy tripod or find a way to weigh it down. You could also just experiment with setting a timer and placing the camera down on something.

Definitely get one of those camera remotes!

I've been getting into old film stuff, been setting up some darkroom stuff in my bathroom. Bought a photographic enlarger the other week. I'm not great at it, but it's a fun hobby. :)

I heard that even Bjorn Lynne finally realized how great Shake Your Coconuts is and how it boosted 3DW in every way imaginable.
I guess they will soon add a patch that'll retroactively add that masterpiece of a pop-song and video game theme song.

And, who knows, maybe they even add a fix to 3DW, that'll permanently disallow to add patches that retroactively add the Worm Song.

The only thing you need is a valid US zip code during the creation of a Dr Pepper account. Last year you also needed a street address. Not sure if that is still the case.

I'd love to know how they know its only one line of code... have they analysed the entire game code itself and determined what's wrong? If so, they should probably be told to post said code to help the bug-fixing process.

The thing I really miss most about msn's handwriting tool actually working is illustrating my Nethack games. All Nethack stories are better in comic form.

Seriously, they moved the window titlebar icons to the top-left, the topbar works as a menubar and the sidebar works like the Mac Dock.

I don't. :p And I thought Linux's whole point was to be this open holier-than-thou different-from-everything-else system. Pandering to Mac of all things seems rather off.

I'm not saying "omg they're stealing from apple the thiefs!!!!" but "wow this is a completely radical change out of nowhere for no apparent reason". For those unfamiliar, this is what it looked like before:

It had its own distinctive interface and suddenly it works exactly like the Mac interface, at least I don't know any other system that has a top system bar that also acts as the active application menubar and has window titlebar buttons on the top-left and has a dockbar with auto-expanding application shortcuts with content menus and little LEDs indicating the running applications which are no longer exited by just closing the window.
