What thread was it on? was it deleted?
Whoever deleted it sucks.
It was a really really REALLY bad "avatar". It was 200x200 pixels, drawn badly in paint without spending any time on it - The text was written with the paintbrush rather than using the in-built write-with-a-font feature. It was god-awful in every way.

Hmm, I somehow managed to get a Nintendo DS for my birthday. However, so far I only have the Metroid Prime demo thingy, Polarium and all the old GBA games. And I've just found out that AWDS is coming out in September, which is ages away. Grr.
Still, it's very nice, particularly as I wasn't really expecting it. I've yet to find anyone to use Pictochat with yet, though...

Reading the Soviet Tokamak blueprints?
I'm learning Russian!
Here's the "story" as to why:.. A friend of mine has an alter ego with the last name "Barinson". I couldn't resist calling him "Comrade Barinson", for some odd reason or another. So, of course, I had to learn how to say "Hi" in Russian, so I could say "Hi Comrade Barinson!". I'd always thought Russian looked like a cool language (the alphabet is probably responsible for that) and, well, after figuring that out I decided I wanted to learn the language.
Good reason, I know...

If you'd actually learn something about Russian first, you'd know that Barinson cannot be a Russian name. In fact, the very ending of it, "son", tells you allready that it is from an english speaking country. Now, Barinov, or Barinski, or even just Barin, would have made a great Russian family name with the same root. Also, if you are saying "hi" in Russian, you should be saying "comrade" in Russian as well, and that is, arguably, even harder. Not to mention that "hi" and "comrade" really don't go together. If you are going with "comrade", you need a more formal salutation as well.

Babelfish seemed to think Comrade was "комрад", but it appears that it should be "Здравствуйте товарищ Баринсон!"
"Здравствуйте товарищ Баринсон!"
That's right. I think you need a comma after salutation, but other than that, this is the right form.

I used actionscript. It draws each shape vertex by vertex in solid green/pale blue, and then the shadowing on the sphere is done with a sneakily overlayed radial gradient fill. (To be honest, it's only shaded to mask some slightly dodgy projection around the sphere edges.) It's a projection, too, rather than a full 3D perspective view, so that simplifies things a lot. The hardest part was hiding the islands on the back of the sphere.
I'll upload the .fla file to the site in a second.

That does sound like a nice way of doing it. The site wouldn't let me download the .fla file off of it, but it doesn't really matter. Did you just extend the vetecies that fell on the back of the sphere (z<0 after transformation) to the edge circle with the radius of the sphere? In other "word", something along the lines of:
if(z<0)
{
r=sqrt(x*x+y*y);
x=x*R/r;
y=y*R/r;
}
I think that would clip the islands quite nicely, espetially with your shadow on the edges trick.
AndrewTaylor
28 Apr 2005, 11:50
That's exactly what I did, yes. There are two problems though, with that:
I've rigged it also to delete any landmass which has had all its vertices extended that way, otherwise an island on the back of the sphere can cover the whole circle. Also, any island that's more than 90ºx90º can still be made to cover the whole planet. Alas, Eurasia is longer than 90º. I could slplit it up easily enough, or else I could just increase the condition for drawing them at all, and have bits of Eurasia vanish if it gets too near the edge.

Need... more... equipment....
Need... money...
You can make some very nice amps and effect boxes out of parts you can get out of old TVs. Lamp amps are a lot better than most transistor amps. The effect boxes are a bit trickier, though. A lot of effects are digital these days. A dellay, for example, is much easier to make by converting audio to digital signal, storing it in memory, and then converting the signal back to analog. You can, of course, use the tape, as it was done back in a day, but digital box is going to be a lot smaller, cost less, and work better.
If your PC can handle it, you can use some software guitar effect programs. You can run your guitar to the microphone or line-in of your PC, use the special program to apply distortion, reverb, and whatever else you need, and then run a wire from your PC to your amp.

Less than 200 posts to 7000, interestingly enough.
I discovered something interesting a couple of nights ago: "-do" typically means the "martial arts" form of a fighting style, and "-jitsu" the "sod this arty stuff, let's just get on with killing people" form of the same fighting style. So we have judo and jujitsu, kendo and kenjitsu. The method of the ninja is apparantly referred to as ninjitsu: alas, there doesn't appear to be a "nindo", because that would presumably be the art of hiding and making as little noise as possible - which I doubt would catch on.
My conclusion to all this is that we need a Nintenjitsu - the art of killing people with computer games...

Are they really compititions, is that how they spell them?
With a Russian accent, what sounds do you substitute for the english "w" and "h"?
In most cases, you would replace "w" sound with a "v" sound. For examle, "what" would be pronounced as "vot" in heavy Russian acent. However, sometimes it can be replaced with a "oo" sound. Depends a lot on who is speaking and where they learned English. The "h" sounds will be replaced, in most cases, with the "kh" sounds, similar to a sound you'd get by reading the Russian letter "х". Sometimes, however, the "h" sound is simply droped.
Take a note that this is only true if you want to imitate a very heavy, Siberean acent, which is what is usualy considered to be the stereotype for Russian acents. Most people from Western part of Russia, espetialy Moscow and St. Petersburg, can manage a fairly close pronounciation of these sounds. There is, of course, still a very recognizable acent, but it is a lot stronger on vowels and the consonants such as "d","t","l" than it is on "h", "w", "qu", "th", and other sounds that do not exist in Russian language.
Finaly, if you want to imitate heavy Russian acent, you need to master pronounciation of soft consonants, which can be fairly difficult.

6 May 2005, 12:39
No. Just no.
Got any reasons? Or is this just a "Someone wanting to learn languages differently to how I did? No!" thing?
I know three people in real life and God-knows how many people online who learnt PHP and then went on to learn C because they found it easy due to the syntax similarities. NONE of the people who I'm talking about would have learnt C if they didn't already know the syntax - Because learning C at the start is incredibly dull.
Ok. I you insist on an explanation, here goes. Syntax has very little to do with anything here. It takes a day to learn a syntax of a new language, but it takes many months to really learn a new language. C is very, very different from PHP. First of all, PHP is a script language. When you write in PHP, what you are really doing is instructing the PHP's interpreter on what to do. The structure of PHP is entirely artificial. On the other hand, C code is compiled into machine code. When you write a line of C, it is associated with a segment of Assembley code. The way that the CPU reads the code is what determined the structure of C. The way that the function calls are made in C comes directly from how CPU processes functions in the machine codes. Same thing with variables, pointers, arrays, structures, etc. In fact, C is just a nicer way to lay down the Assembley code.
I will also say that anyone who says that PHP is similar to C doesn't know C. Many people think that they do, but how many of them have any idea of what they are actually doing when they are declaring main? The natural starting point for learning C is learning Assembley, because all C code is tied to Assembley code. Every function can be traced back to a segment of Assembley code. I could take any of the IO function in C and trace it all the way back to the interrupt calls in Assembley. In case of PHP, the best I can do is trace it back to the function call in the interpreter, and different versions of that interpreter might handle that call completely differently.
AndrewTaylor
6 May 2005, 17:08
It depends.
I think PHP is a good starting point for someone who wants to learn to programme and wants eventually to code C. I don't reccomend diving straight into C because it's a total ******* to debug.
Mind you, debugging PHP isn't exactly a barrel of laughs either.
I came at it the other way around: I was good at C when I learned PHP (ie, a couple of months ago). I found PHP was just like a Lovely version of C. It lets you get away with anything.
Declare variables? What for?
You can use strings as array indices, for crying out loud. I don't even know how that would work.
You can even access variables by putting their names in a string and using that.
It's madness, it really is. Madness on a stick.

Again, this is all how you think. You're not a normal person, and far from it - Especially when it comes to programming. Learning Assembly to learn C is *not* a good idea.
I have many friends that have learnt programming languages. And NONE of them managed to learn all the syntax for a language in a day. Hell, let's ask Carmack, or a Team17 programmer if they think you're right. But I think all of them will say the same comment as was made about you one time down the pub in Ossett "Bull****".
Andrew - I did the same as you. I learnt PHP after I'd learnt C, C++ and started DirectX and OpenGL.
In your case K^2, learning PHP to learn C wouldn't have been good. But you're far, far from the norm, and assuming that because you learn one way that everyone should is being arrogant, stupid, and is total bull****.

Madness on a stick.Warning: do not read that post while trying to listen to I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again. The laughter circuits of your brain may overload.

I just saw the butterfly effect, quite good of a movie.
I also saw Star Wars episode IV yesterday(they are gonna show all the movies on fox this month every tuesday). I've never seen those movies complete before.
And what's with Obi Wan vs Darth Vader fight? It sucks. It's like watching two kids fight with sticks.
Other than that, it's a nice movie :p

We're watching old episodes of SW with some friends to prepare for Ep. 3 that comes out on the 19th. And yes, the Light Saber fight in IV isn't nearly as impressive as these in I and II. I think the main Light Saber fight in V (I won't say between whom, just in case) is a bit better than the one in IV, though, it has been a while since I've seen V, so I don't remember exactly. We are planning to watch V and VI tomorrow.

I quite enjoyed the Butterfly Effect. It turned out better then I thought.
It was a good movie. Of course, as you probably expect, I have to add that time travel doesn't work like that. Still, a good movie with a nice refference to the Chaos Theory. Speaking of which, they are making the movie based on A Sound of Thunder.

Silent woman in the night, you came, Took my seed from my shaking frame.
Same old fire, another flame, And the wheel rolls on.
Silent woman through the flames, you come, From the deep behind the sun
Seems my nightmares, have just begun
Left me barely holding on.
With blazing eyes you see my trembling hand.
When we know the time has come
Lose my senses, lose command
Feel your healing rivers run
Is it every time I fall, That I think this is the one
In the darkness can you hear me call
Another day has just begun.
Silent woman, my face is changed
Some know in ways to come.
Feel my fire needs a brand new flame
And the wheels rolls on.... rolls on.

If you do not know assembley, you do not know how to program. It is as simple as that. Learning Assembley before learning C is as natural of a step as learning C before C++. C is not a programming language. It is an organizer tool for assembley. By itself, C has no I/O capabilities. All that pure C is capable of is performing arithmetical operations on numbers stored in RAM. In order for the program to be of any use it must communicate with hardware, which requires an interrupt call, which is done in C with an insert written in Assembley.
And no, this wasn't the way I learned it. I first learned BASIC on a machine which used it as an OS and had a line editor as its shell. Then I "learned" some C and C++. Then I took courses in digital logic and CPU architecture, which allowed me not to just learn Assembley, but to know how Assembley language relates to the op codes and how op codes are related to the CPU's architecture. After that I have re-learned C and C++ based on my knowledge of Assembley with understanding of what C compiler actualy does, and now, looking back at my first attempts of "learning" C and C++ I can say that it was a waste of time without learning Assembly first.
And hell yes, I'm being arrogant, but I have a very good reason to be this arrogant. I meet people who think they know how to program on daily basis at my University, and all but very few of them know jack about it. You can't be a good programmer if you don't know exactly how the CPU is going to interpret the code that you write. Sure, you can write some simple stuff. You can even grab some libraries and write 3D engines, but they will be crap, because if you can't give an estimate of how many CPU instructions your code translates into, you can't write efficient code.

Total bollocks. There's a difference between being a great programmer, a good programmer, and just a programmer.
Let's look at the definition of the WORD programmer:
pro·gram·mer or pro·gram·er (prō'grăm'ər) pronunciation
n.
One who programs, especially:
1. Computer Science. One who writes computer programs.
2. One who prepares or writes instructional programs.
You can write a program (however inefficient) without knowing Assembly. Nobody in my Computing class knows Assembly (except me). They all can write computer programs. Therefore, they are programmers. QED.
Yes, and the person who just mashes keys on a keyboard at random is techincally using a computer. A person who does not know Assembly cannot know C. That is all.
Edit: Simple test. Catch someone who knows nothing about Assembley, but thinks that he knows C. Ask that person why:
int x[10];
0[x+9]=1;
Is technically a correct way of addressing the 10th element of the array at x.

All I can say is, if it gets the right answer out, then I've programmed it okay.
But then I'm a mathmo. As long as it's got loops, branches, all the necessary operators and an input/output system, I'm good to go.
And C doesn't have input/output. :p
You can't be a good programmer if you don't know exactly how the CPU is going to interpret the code that you write.
On the contrary, you don't need any such things as a CPU or assembly to program. You are narrowly looking at a type of programming where efficiency is important. There are different ways of being a great programmer, eg. creativity.

Er, hello? Mister Khitrin, sir? I couldn't code "Hello World" in assembly and I know the answer to that question.
I know a little about assembly, and all I've picked up is that I don't want to use it, ever. You could just as easily argue that BASIC is just a convenient way of storing assembly instructions. It still boils down to object code once it's compiled, albeit bloated and inefficient object code.

DALEK GAME!

But this is allready getting into memory access which requires understanding of arrays as they are interpreted by the CPU. All that is missing is the syntax of Assembley, and as I said before, syntax isn't as important in the language as its structure. Furthermore, I could provide less trivial examples, which would require direct knowledge of Assembley, but none of them are as short and to the point as this one. (Edit: The idea was that most random people who think they know C will not know the answer. Exceptions do exist.)
And may I remind you that BASIC is an interpreted language? When you write:
PRINT "Hello World"
In Basic, you are instructing the BASIC interpreter to put that text onto a screen. When you write:
printf("Hello World\n");
In C, you are instructing the C compiler to put a call for a function which is part of your code. The fact that you have not written that function yourself, but instead just incerted it into your code by linking a stdio.lib into your executable does not change the fact that it is a call to a function written, at least in part, in Assembley language and compiled into a library. As I mentioned befor, C does not have any I/O. It all must be done in Assembley, though, most people just use the pre-compiled libraries for that.

If you are going to factorise numbers, you are more interested in writing optimized code than most game designers. In fact, you should be counting each CPU instruction, and you can't do it without knowing exactly what your compiler and optimizer do.

Why did I know I was just asking for trouble with that example? :rolleyes:
In fact the project had a couple of questions devoted to the whole complexity business, with the curious simplicfication that "all arithmetic operations take the same length of time as each other". I tried my best to waffle my way through those questions, and concentrate on what I consider to be the interesting bit, i.e. how to get the damn thing to work in the first place (Never mind that it's been done by different people lots of times before. I get a big kick out of discovering for myself extremely obvious things).
I had even more fun with my latest project, which involved writing a program to produce a lumpy bumpy* graph, cajoling Excel into confirming that this lumpy bumpy graph was correct and not a figment of either my or the computer's imagination, fretting over whether I should be using Excel anyway instead of an actual programming language, and working out why the heck my graph was lumpy and bumpy anyway.
* It appeared to produce a rather interesting fractal pattern, actually. See below

Not as important, no. Knowing the syntax doesn't mean you know the language, but if you don't know the syntax, you can never know the language.
Also, a good third of my past two years in education for Computing have been spent on Assembly stuff, but we've never *had* to learn the syntax - We were taught about how the CPU interprets stuff, about memory management, all at a very low level, but we never learnt Assembly. You do not have to know an Assembly language to understand how things work. What about people that were even lower level than Assembly and used physical switches? They understand how it works, but they don't know Assembly.
Way too on-topic. *dumps a bucket of hamsters and sausages into the thread* *sets things on fire*

For example, it is very important to know exactly how the jump to a function and return from it work in Assembley, but it isn't nearly as important to remember which registers are used to store pointer to local variables, return address, etc. That is the kind of stuff you can look up, and it is the kind of stuff that your compiler will put in for you. You just have to know how it works to know how many instructions you are going to lose if you do the function call rather than in-lining whatever it is that you are writing.
Perhaps knowing assembly also means knowing how to spell it correctly? :p

Knowing Assembly means just that - Knowing Assembly. If you know Assembly, you understand how it operates iwth the Computer, what each line of code does, and the syntax of the language.
If you don't know the syntax, you don't know Assembly. It means you know *how* an Assembly language (and so any language) affects data in the CPU.
This is almost as silly as saying that a person who does not remember the gravitational constant does not understand the law of universal gravitational attraction.
Besides, on the level of particular commands, there is no more Assembly. There is RISC Assembly, CISC Assembly, MIPS Assembly, and others, and all of these further subdivided into things like x86 Assembly, R5900 Assembly, et cetera. Of course, there are some major differences between architectures that are usefull to know when coding, such as the fact that in R5900 an instruction immediately following a jump or branch instruction is executed before the jump is performed, but for the most part, the Central Processing Units tend to have a lot of similarities from one to another, and understanding just one in high detail is sufficient for working with most of them, so knowing one Assembly is sufficient. This might easily change in the next few years, of course. The processors with parallel computation capabilities, such as Cell, will probably start dominating the market and change many paradigms of programming.

Umm... no. The law of universal gravitational attraction is a law of physics. The constant is just that - a constant. It's useful for the equation, but it's not part of the law.
If you'd said knowing how the internal parts of a computer work in reference to memory handling, manipulation etc. inside the CPU I'd have agreed with you. But to know Assembly you DO need to know the syntax, because Assembly (and so x86 Assembly etc.) are all programming languages, and to use them you need to know, amongst other things, the syntax.
A better example than yours is a real life language:

Japanese has over 100,000 words. A typical Assembly arround a 100. Communicating in Japanese using a dictionary for translations is impractical, coding in Assembly using a manual is. If you know how the CPU works, you know its Assebley, even if you don't know any of the names for the commands, because it is just a matter of opening a book and looking that stuff up. On the other hand, a person who doesn't know how the CPU works can spend days with a book on Assembly and still have no idea how to program in it.

No. No you don't. You don't seem to understand this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assembly_language
Assembly language or simply assembly is a human-readable notation for the machine language that a specific computer architecture uses. Machine language, a pattern of bits encoding machine operations, is made readable by replacing the raw values with symbols called mnemonics.
Oh look, Assembly is HUMAN-READABLE NOTATION. So if you don't know the syntax, you do not know Assembly. QED.
I don't like to use dictionary definitions, but I have nothing better, so I'll plea no contest on this one.
Nevertheless, you are not proving wrong my original statement, which is: You cannot know C without knowing Assembley.

Yes you can. Because you can learn C without knowing the Assembly syntax, and if you don't know the syntax you don't know Assembly. QED.
C relies on Assembly for I/O => Assembly is part of C => You can't know C without knowing Assembly.

C relies on Assembly for I/O => Assembly is part of C => You can't know C without knowing Assembly.
Not really. I do not have to understand how "cout" works to understand C, and saying so is total bollocks. If you don't give in soon, I'll ask a programmer who knows what they're doing (you know, the ones that said to M3ntal and I at the pub that everything you said was "bollocks"), and see what their opinion is. The ones who program for a living and have degrees in it.
You were just done saying that one must understand everything in a language to understand a language. Assembly incerts are a part of C. And if you cannot do I/O at all without a certain part of a language, it definetly is a very important part of it.
By the way, cout doesn't even work in C. :p
More than half of the people who program for a living know nothing about programming. I will not take a word of anyone who doesn't have a Ph.D. in some serious field related to CS. Preferably, a specialist in AI and/or Image Recognition.

Either Paul.Power can't subtract, or he is working in base 10.00151 in which 2005 is the same as 2006 in base 10, giving him 14 as an answer. Knowing him, it is the later and he has a perfectly rational explanation for using a fractional base.

Well, about a month ago we got rid of a lot of plants on our garden, this type I don't know how to call in english, but here's a pic of how my garden looked about that time.
So taking them all down was a pain in the ass because this things are extremely resistant. We then had to clean all up, which is now half done. And now we're suposed to remove all the roots. My mom called a gardner but he refused to do the job(...). So we're suposed to do it ourselves... and she doesn't want us to use explosives, which would be the most factible solution(I'll get a pic of the roots soon so you see why it's freaking impossible to remove with average garden tools).
Any suggestions :rolleyes:

Is there a difference between a CD-WR and a DVD+/-WR? I mean, can you burn CDs with a DVD+/-WR?
If it is capable of burning CDs as well as DVDs, it will say so on the box, along with the speeds at which it can perform the operations. For example, the box for my CD-RW / DVD+/-RW has the following info:
8X DVD+R
4X DVD+RW
8X DVD-R
4X DVD-RW
40X CD-R
24X CD-RW
12X DVD-ROM
40X CD-ROM
Unfortunately, it only burns CDs at the moment. I think it is a firmware problem, but I'm not sure.

A friend of mine(HUGE C&H fan) mentioned that to me. I'll prolly get it.
And K^2, I'm thinking of getting a PC with 2 optical drives. Should I get a DVD burner and a DVD drive, or a DVD burner and a CD burner? That's essentially why I'm asking.
I think it is a best to have one drive to be just for ROM, because all of the burning drives tend to be less dependable. I've gone through 3 CD-Burners in 3 years, and I'm still using the same DVD-ROM drive. Also, CD burning is much more stable than DVD burning, so it is preferable to have a CD burner. If you want a DVD burner and you don't want to or can't have 3 optical drives, it is best to have a DVD-ROM drive and a DVD/CD burner drive. I got mine for $100, but it is a piece of crap, so I'd suggest looking for something dependable rather than buying the cheapest one. Look on internet, ask arround the forums. I'm sure someone can reccomend a descent DVD/CD burner for a reasonable price.

Someone's been playing around with Garry's Mod.
That's a Rube Goldberg Device: http://www.rube-goldberg.com/html/gallery.htm. Check the link for clips of Goldberg Devices made by American high-school kids. And the original Rube Goldberg cartoons.
Garry's Mod is used to make tonnes of Goldberg Devices. Like a huge amount of metal, swingy poles and stuff to cause a beer to roll into a bath that a model is sitting in. I don't know where to find them. I've seen them on PCGUK DVDs. They're incredible.
