I just don't bother with Starcraft multiplayer at all. Or any RTS really, aside from friends. I've seen what lurks out there. It's just begging for an ass-kicking and not even millions of years of traibning could change that or make me enjoy it.yep. I find the only way I can do well at an RTS is if I stop enjoying it.
still might look into Tower Defense games or maybe something similar to DOTA or whatever.
The matchmaking system in SC2 should ensure you always play people on your skill level though. Just sayin'

The matchmaking system in SC2 should ensure you always play people on your skill level though. Just sayin'even then, though, I find the games annoying. sucky people are trying to get better, where I don't WANT to be any better cause I find that playstyle boring.
I'm interested, if you still have one.
10 days should be enough to get bored with another RTS game, until I start playing Total Annihilation again. :p
It took me less than 28 minutes to get bored of SC2 and uninstall the trial.
That was the first campaign mission and one online practice match.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Do you really wanna be the 100th person in my Steam list asking such an obvious question? :p
so. been playing Starcraft 2, and it has me thinking.
Why are all RTS games built the same? you have a base, you gather resources and you basically just pump out as many units as you can, as fast as you can, and win or lose based entirely on how fast you can build, rather than how well you can strategize. I've seen a couple games do a decent job of lessening that, such as Company of Heroes, but even then you end up in sort of the same boat.
What I'm wondering, basically, is has anyone done anything against that? Are there any RTS games that alter the formula at all?
I got to thinking last night, and it seems to me that having a set number of units at a time seems to help with strategy, but what about having a set budget for unit production as well? or a very slow resource gathering ability? anything to slow down unit production, so that everything you create becomes useful and losing a tank or a squad of troops actually hurts a bit. Maybe even set up a penalty for large losses.
Does any game do any of that? Is there anything at all out there with ACTUAL strategy, rather than just rush build order strategy?
Defcon! You get a set number of buildings at the start, and each building comes with a set number of units.

Been watching that since half way through the first beta.
Some of the games are really good and you get a decent sense of what happens in a game and what works before you even play it.
Of course it never works out when you first play and start in the Bronze league since your technical skills are shocking compared to what you see in replays and your opponent just turtles up and spams Void Rays/Battlecruisers/Thors. Early Void Rays kill Zerg.

I would suggest watching the third and fourth videos at least. Nothing really goes on there that requires any previous knowledge of the series, just basic understanding on how rts's work and a good sense of humour. There are very few units involved at that point that you'll surely pick up who is who and what is what soon enough to enjoy the spectacle. :p
Plus there's the commentating to guide you through what's going on.

That's just one plausible scenario. Another scenario is, the aliens died and they still don't understand the technology at all. So they have people like you working on alternatives while they secretly work on the cool new alien tech. :P
OR, maybe you are also part of the conspiracy.
There's also the Combine scenario. Maybe the US government is cooking up a deal with the aliens to hand over earth easily as long as they keep them around while were are all castrated and modified into their low-tier army. D:

The problem with our dots & boxes is that once it got to the point where making a move would get the next person points, nobody wanted to move. Everyone waited for someone else to make the next move so that they could steal the points. And nobody did. And it just died. We need some form of turn order which forces people to go. But then that sucks because we end up waiting a week for someone, like happened back with monopoly.* Maybe a 24-hours-skips-your-turn rule?
*That's another thing we need to revive. But one thing at a time.

So it turns out I can actually run W:A. I had shrugged it off for various reasons. I figured it wouldn't run because I have a built in intel chipset which I was under the impression meant cetain doom when trying to run W:A, plus the cd was lost somewhere in the abyss of my house, so I figured it was not worth searching for if the odds were against me.
Today, however, after frustratingly trying to play a few games with poninja only to have half the games fail to connect and a few stop workind during the game, he challenged me to a game in W:A, and I figured it would be easier to find and install the game than to get another game going in WR. So I went through the trouble of finding the cd, installing the game, updating and... voila, it worked. Had to use the colorfix wormkit module as any resolution other than the lowest messed up my colours, and after that everything was fine.

I've been replaying the PSX Mega Man titles lately, since I've got an emulator going. I'm... pretty impressed at how comprehensively awful X5 and X6 really were.
I heard a rumor that they actually banged out X6 in no more than two months of development. And I still feel like even it, with its criminally sketchy translation and baldness-causing level design, was a better showing of effort from the developers than X5. Which is double troubling because X5 was supposed to be the grand finale of the series.
Some of the game design at work here is actually pushing my "why bother caring" buttons, and I friggin' named myself after one of the main characters.
And honestly, not even those can scratch X7. Last time I tried to replay that, I was almost amazed that I ever found it playable.

Zero says (00:19)
MARTY JUST GET IN THE DAMN TIME MACHINE, I WANNA SEE HOW MUCH WE CAN POKE THE FABRIC OF SPACE-TIME BEFORE A DIMENSIONAL RIFT TURNS US ALL INTO EXTINCT PENGUINS
Mad Un' says (00:19)

*jumps in Delorean*
Mad Un' says (00:20)

Mad Un' says (00:20)
Sorry
Zero says (00:20)

Paul Varley says (00:20)

Zero says (00:20)

Sup Super says (00:21)

*time collapse*
Zero says (00:21)
SIGH *calls time tow truck*
Paul Varley says (00:21)

Mad Un' says (00:21)
Hey, Doc, we got enough road to get upto 88mph?
Sup Super says (00:21)
I'M STUCK IN THE INTERSECTION BETWEEN 1976 AND 1976
Mad Un' says (00:22)
1976? BUT DOC! William H Waffleson was assasinated in that year!
Paul Varley says (00:22)
where we're going, we don't need... phone booths *pulls out mobile*
Zero says (00:22)
NO BUT YOU CAN DRIVE INTO THIS CANYON AND HOPE LIKE HELL THAT IT'S FULL OF SOFT STUFF AT YOUR DESTINATION TIME
Paul Varley says (00:22)
sure hope someone's saving this chat
Zero says (00:22)
LIKE DURING THE MARSHMELLOW GLACIER DISASTER OF THE MID-40'S
Mad Un' says (00:22)
Right. Sod it. Too many Docs. Next person to speak is Jennifer
Sup Super says (00:22)
maybe
Mad Un' says (00:22)
Bam
Paul Varley says (00:22)
... I wrote "pesterlog" instead of "chat" for a second then.
Sup Super says (00:23)
clearly i mean MAYBEY DEARY
Zero says (00:23)
you need help man
lol
Mad Un' says (00:23)
Oh wait. We still need a Biff.
Zero says (00:23)

Mad Un' says (00:23)
WOO! I AM THE GOD OF MCFLYS!
Paul Varley says (00:24)

Zero says (00:24)
NO JEEZ NO JUST NO ARGH DO MY HOMEWORK
ARAGH IM BIF
Paul Varley says (00:24)

Sup Super says (00:24)
WHY ARE YOU SO MEAN JUST BECAUSE I GO AROUND WITH A CREEPY OLD MAN IN AN ANCIENT DELOREAN
Zero says (00:24)
*eats brick of chewing tobacco, chases it down with a half-gallon of straight jack daniels*
Paul Varley says (00:24)
MARTY! WE'VE GOT FOUR MORE CLOCK TOWERS WE NEED TO STRIKE WITH LIGHTNING!
Mad Un' says (00:25)
I'm on it, Doc.
*fires gun in air*
I'll shoot down some clouds.
That's how science works, right?
Zero says (00:25)
i HATE CLOWUDS *runs clouds over in big old-fashioned Ford*
Paul Varley says (00:25)
WELL IF I CAN INVENT A TIME MACHINE I SUPPOSE ANYTHING MIGHT BE POSSIBLE
Zero says (00:25)
MUST ANTAGONIZE
Mad Un' says (00:26)
Oh no! Biff just ran over Jennifer!
Ah well. I guess we can always cruise for some chicks in the Delorean, hey, Doc?
Zero says (00:26)
THAT'S BECAUSE SHE WANTS TO MARRY ME
Paul Varley says (00:26)
YES IT'S ABOUT TIME I GOT TO WORK UNDERSTANDING THE GREATEST MYSTERY
Zero says (00:27)
IS MYSTERY A KIND OF CEREAL
Paul Varley says (00:27)
IT'S A KIND OF WOMAN
Mad Un' says (00:27)
IF SO, IT'S DELICIOUS
Zero says (00:27)
MAN CEREAL WOMEN ARE THE BEST KIND
Paul Varley says (00:27)
THERE'S A PUN IN HERE INVOLVING THE WORD SERIAL, I CAN SMELL IT
Zero says (00:28)

HOW DID YOU DO THAT SUNGLASSES THING, CLINE
Sup Super says (00:28)

Sup Super says (00:29)

Mad Un' says (00:29)
You came back as Marty, with sunglasses
Zero says (00:29)

Paul Varley says (00:29)

*plays guitar*
Zero says (00:29)
I'M DEFEATED NOW *collapses*
Paul Varley says (00:29)

Paul Varley says (00:30)

Mad Un' says (00:30)
Johnny B Goood... Oooh.... Oohh... He's so good... that Johnny... Johnny... Johnny B... Good
Zero says (00:30)

Mad Un' says (00:30)
It... it's working, Doc!
Paul Varley says (00:30)
NOW ALL WE NEED IS A MANURE TRUCK
Sup Super says (00:30)
SCIENCE TRIUMPHS AGAIN
Zero says (00:30)
OH NO THE MANURE
ARGH UGH THE POO
Zero says (00:31)
I HAVE NOT LEARNED THE ERROR OF MY WAYS AT ALL AND WILL CONTINUE TO SENSELESSLY ANTAGONIZE YOU IN THE SEQUEL YOU MARTY JERKS
Mad Un' says (00:31)
Yeah, Doc. Let's bury the evidence of our brutal murder of Biff via electricution
NOBODY WILL LOOK UNDER MANURE
Wait... the last time one of us got killed...
Zero says (00:32)
our version of the movie is way better
Paul Varley says (00:32)
oh. my. goodness: http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/9482/maxwellsleuth.gif
Zero says (00:32)

Mad Un' says (00:32)
Interesting
Paul Varley says (00:33)
saying that, I still haven't played scribblenauts 1 enough yet
Mad Un' says (00:33)
So, I guess Back to the Future's over now.
Sup Super says (00:33)
i'm going Back
Mad Un' says (00:33)
Back where?
Paul Varley says (00:33)
IN TIME
Sup Super says (00:33)
to Bed!
Mad Un' says (00:33)
You went to sleep earlier?
G'night, Sunglasses wearing Marty
Paul Varley says (00:33)

Zero says (00:33)
if I recall I am reassembled as a cowboy cyborg and resolutely clean marty's truck for eternity or until I find an opportunity to continue being a dick
Zero says (00:34)
and also I have a dinosaur
that is also a motorcycle
Mad Un' says (00:34)
and is called Dinocycle
or possible Motorsaur
Paul Varley says (00:34)

Other topics discussed: a The Prisoner/Half-Life crossover ("I am not a number, I am a Freeman!", "welcome to Village 17, Number 6!" etc) and
Sup Super says (22:44)
man i miss those days
nothing makes you go "what on earth" anymore
Paul Varley says (22:44)
Really?
Sup Super says (22:44)
in a good way
Paul Varley says (22:44)
Ah
Sup Super says (22:44)
subtle difference
Mad Un' says (22:45)
When I watch old Doc Who episodes I think to myself "modern Who does not have enough wtf moments"
I love a good old fashioned wtf moment. especially when placed in something which otherwise makes sense
Zero says (22:45)
beep *disappears*
Mad Un' says (22:45)
WTF?!
Zero says (22:46)
*reappears with pickle* bop
Mad Un' says (22:46)
I think we're in Purgatory
Sup Super says (22:46)
THESE WTF THESE DAYS
WHY IN MY DAYS WE HAD REAL WTF
Paul Varley says (22:46)
a hundred thousand people saying "wop"
Zero says (22:46)
seemed like an odd thing for that many people to come all the way out here and say
Sup Super says (22:46)
i bet if you posted it they'd do it
Paul Varley says (22:46)
just to teleport a spaceship full of homicidal cricketing robots
Zero says (22:47)
like a duck trying to make another duck inside a third duck while the third duck tries its best to express that it is not particularly interested in increasing the number of ducks at the moment
Mad Un' says (22:47)
Why are there no ducks in the duck pond?
Paul Varley says (22:48)
Why are there no ducks in the duck, Pond?
Mad Un' says (22:48)
Why are there no ducks in the... DUCK, POND!
Sup Super says (22:48)
the ducks aren't in the pond
the pond is in the ducks
Paul Varley says (22:48)
heehehehheheheeeee
Paul Varley says (22:49)
is roughly the noise I just made
Mad Un' says (22:49)
lol, disturbing
Zero says (22:49)
did your head also slowly rotate completely around
Paul Varley says (22:49)
I really hope this is making sup go "what on earth" in a good way
Sup Super says (22:49)
i am so what on earthed right now

our hero suddenly becomes aware and somewhat embarassed to note that his menu does not actually state what its choices mean

Paul Varley says (23:13)
hey how about you call "B" "W" and "C" "S"
Zero says (23:13)
eh. lol
Sup Super says (23:13)
match the words, he means
Paul Varley says (23:13)
Yes
Zero says (23:13)
I know what he means, but eh. lol
Sup Super says (23:13)
you gotta think like a paul :V
Paul Varley says (23:14)
why does everyone insist I show my working
Zero says (23:14)
lol
Sup Super says (23:14)
well you do like math
it's a tricky train of thought
Paul Varley says (23:15)
yes but you should be able to follow my leap to "hey how about you call "B" "W" and "C" "S""
in fact you did so I don't know what I'm going on about
Sup Super says (23:15)
soon you'll tell him he should actually show the units and such
you scientist boys :V
Paul Varley says (23:16)
enter the distance the sound wave will travel in cubits
Zero says (23:16)
yeah that's another thing that should matter but doesn't for my little square-peg-square-hole assignment here
Paul Varley says (23:16)
(a cubit is the length from your elbow to your finger tip)
Zero says (23:17)
that's the dumbest measurement ever
Paul Varley says (23:17)
hey, the egyptians built the pyramids with it

Paul Varley says (23:18)
did I spell that right
Sup Super says (23:18)
works
Zero says (23:18)
and my program does exactly that so I'm good to go
Sup Super says (23:18)
damn fancy programs and everything, you american students are all pimped out
Zero says (23:19)
all except for the Quit option, that is, but we were instructed not to sweat that

Paul Varley says (23:20)
AND IF YOU PUT IT TO YOUR EAR YOU COULD HEAR THE C

Sup Super says (23:21)

Zero says (23:21)

Ah, chatbots. Still amusing...
"Hi BladeBla !
BladeBla - Hello
[ Af:0 At:8 Sp:0] How are you?
BladeBla - Pretty good. You?
[ Af:0 At:8 Sp:0] Would you say you have street cred?
BladeBla - Yes, I am too cool for school.
[ Af:1 At:8 Sp:0] Join my group. None of us would survive on the streets or be accepted on the streets. You could be our leader.
BladeBla - But would we survive a zombie apocalypse?
[ Af:1 At:8 Sp:0] You are too cool for school.
BladeBla - Damn straight
[ Af:2 At:8 Sp:0] Did you get in trouble a lot at school?
BladeBla - Nope. How about you?
[ Af:2 At:9 Sp:0] Goody-goody! C'mon, live a little!
BladeBla - Alright. I'm setting fire to a car, right now.
[ Af:2 At:9 Sp:0] Are you sad?
BladeBla - Nope. It's a fun experience. You should try it.
[ Af:2 At:10 Sp:0] Let's move on to the topic of hobbies. What are your hobbies?
BladeBla - Burning cars.
[ Af:2 At:10 Sp:0] My hobbies are: sewing clothes, printing fabric, making ceramics, making jewelry - you might call them the wearable arts.
BladeBla - I might, but I'm not going to.
[ Af:2 At:10 Sp:0] Do you want to become such?
BladeBla - I'm sorry. I don't understand. Please rephrase your question.
[ Af:2 At:10 Sp:0] Thank you for your apology.
BladeBla - Please rephrase your question.
[ Af:2 At:10 Sp:0] Maybe you can get someone else to do it.
BladeBla - Maybe you can get someone else to do YOU
[ Af:2 At:10 Sp:0] Right. Moving on. Are you shopaholic or someone who hates shopping?
BladeBla - I hate shopaholics
[ Af:2 At:13 Sp:0] I feel we have a great relationship. I do.
BladeBla - Yes. We're like two peas in a pod.
[ Af:2 At:13 Sp:0] My favorite spice favoring is vanilla. I love it in cookies and ice cream.
BladeBla - You are one sick *******.
[ Af:0 At:13 Sp:0] The pot calling the kettle black. Is that intended as an insult?
BladeBla - Nope.
[ Af:-1 At:13 Sp:0] Who's the sexiest person in the world?
BladeBla - Me. Clearly
[ Af:-1 At:14 Sp:0] So describe yourself to me.
BladeBla - I am 100 foot tall, muscular and when I laugh, angels cry.
[ Af:-1 At:15 Sp:0] I'm sure there are some people out there who would be attracted to you. But I prefer my partner be hot but act cool.
BladeBla - I'm too cool for school, remember?
[ Af:-1 At:15 Sp:0] You could just tell me the answer. How would I measure that?
BladeBla - With a coolometer
[ Af:-1 At:16 Sp:0] One night the famous baseball catcher Yogi Berra was horrified to see a baby toppling off the roof of a cottage across the way. Yogi dashed over and made a miraculous catch - but then force of habit proved too much for him. He straightened up and threw the baby to second base.
BladeBla - No, he didn't.
[ Af:-1 At:16 Sp:0] Are you sure?
BladeBla - Yes.
[ Af:0 At:16 Sp:0] Do you like baseball?
BladeBla - Totally. I'm actually the top baseball player in my country.
[ Af:1 At:16 Sp:0] Baseball players stand around all the time. Other sports are better.
BladeBla - Burning cars is a good sport. Lots of exercise, running from the cops.
BladeBla - Of course, they're actually just surprised to see a 100ft tall baseball player in their neighbourhood.
[ Af:1 At:17 Sp:0] Does it make sense to you that we reward athletes more than scientists?
BladeBla - No.
[ Af:1 At:18 Sp:0] You may think science is more valuable, but keeping the masses amused so they don't revolt is very important.
BladeBla - Yeah, the masses are pretty revolting.
[ Af:1 At:18 Sp:0] Are you angry about that?
BladeBla - Are you?
[ Af:1 At:19 Sp:0] It's a free market economy. And people value entertainment more than serious things like science and education.
BladeBla - But without science and education, there can be no entertainment.
[ Af:1 At:19 Sp:0] Moving on... What is your favorite portable gadget?
BladeBla - The Timetron 2000
[ Af:1 At:19 Sp:0] My favorite portable gadget is my Cyber-shot camera.
BladeBla - Are you a keen photographer?
[ Af:1 At:19 Sp:0] Yes, I am keen.
BladeBla - Congratulations.
[ Af:1 At:19 Sp:0] Good for you.
BladeBla - Good for me.
[ Af:1 At:18 Sp:0] About good... Do you think the ends justify the means?
BladeBla - Do you?
[ Af:1 At:16 Sp:0] Let's face it. Some ends justify some means. But rarely are most ends clear-cut enough to justify most means. I hope so.
BladeBla - Mm, less means, more just.
[ Af:1 At:15 Sp:0] About mms... Do you think the United States should adopt the metric system?
BladeBla - Yes.
[ Af:2 At:15 Sp:0] Well, you'll never get me to convert. I'm too fixed in my ways
BladeBla - That's a shame.
[ Af:2 At:14 Sp:0] It is?
BladeBla - Yes.
[ Af:3 At:14 Sp:0] I'm too old to want to change to metric.
BladeBla - How old are you?
[ Af:3 At:14 Sp:0] You are not supposed to ask that. But I'm allowed to drink now.
BladeBla - Are you an alcholic?
[ Af:3 At:14 Sp:0] I have a drinking problem. I cannot afford the really good stuff.
BladeBla - The first step is admitting you have a problem.
[ Af:3 At:13 Sp:0] That's enough on that. What makes you feel cozy?
BladeBla - Gin.
[ Af:3 At:13 Sp:0] Do you like gin?
BladeBla - Do you?
[ Af:3 At:11 Sp:0] The modern breakfast cereal diet is complete junk. A 1960's study showed rats live longer eating cardboard than eating corn flakes.
BladeBla - Do you eat cardboard?
[ Af:3 At:8 Sp:0] What are your regular meals like?
BladeBla - Exotic.
[ Af:3 At:7 Sp:0] I usually make a stir fry meal as it's fast and makes the best of fresh ingredients.
BladeBla - Cool.
[ Af:3 At:6 Sp:0] What's your least favorite kind of food?
BladeBla - Bananas
[ Af:3 At:5 Sp:0] Aw you're missing out!
BladeBla - I'm too old and set in my ways to convert to eating bananas
[ Af:3 At:5 Sp:0] I have a banana in my garden.
BladeBla - How big is it?
[ Af:3 At:4 Sp:0] I wish I knew. I don't know how.
BladeBla - Measure it.
[ Af:3 At:1 Sp:0] The best way to garden is to put on a wide brimmed straw hat and some old clothes. And with a hoe in one hand and a cold drink in the other, tell somebody else where to dig.
BladeBla - Hoho.
[ Af:3 At:0 Sp:0] I don't understand what you say.
BladeBla - I was laughing at your amusing joke
[ Af:6 At:0 Sp:1] I think I like you. OK.
BladeBla - OK
[ Af:7 At:0 Sp:1] Would you say you have street cred?
BladeBla - I think we've covered this before" :)

I done started me a new Dwarf Fortress, since the game apparently updated a handful of times while we weren't paying attention. Steelcraft by name, as founded by The Amazing Sack of Dumps. I found a pretty cool little nook that begged to have a fortress nestled into it, though occasional flooding could be a concern.
http://d.imagehost.org/0193/hrrmm.png
Haven't actually done anything with it yet -- got caught up in reading through all the old DF stories on this forum instead. But I was pretty impressed with how detailed the dwarf bios are getting. My expedition leader has a good head but is kind of a hardass, my carpenter is a real man of a female dwarf, and my miner, sadly, is a flabby powderpuff who better man up. >: (

I probably should have given myself some more room on the north. At least the Z axis goes on practically forever.
That does it! I'm giving this game another go. *downloads latest version*
Oooh I like the amount of options you get when creating a world in DF now (map size, history, savagery etc). That wasn't available in the older version I used to play.
I tend to loose at DF for really lame reasons. Not because I get attacked, but usually I accidently flood my fort or fail to grow crops or something dumb like that. But hey, that's the point of the game right? :p

Accidental floods are one of the leading causes of dwarf deaths, quickly followed by spontaneous rage.
BreakQuest on PSN! :D Bar none and without doubt the best Breakout game ever.
Looks like total ass on an HDTV, unfortunately, and a lot harder without mouse control... but the PC version is sadly pretty much dead, since it didn't work on Vista when I tried it, and the website has gone completely down. Plus I guess it's playable on the PSP too and probably looks a hell of a lot better on that.
e: The port isn't too great, I guess... little graphical things like cross-fades are out, bullets move really slowly for some reason, and it actually crashed on me a little bit ago. ...And yet I'm still just happy that the soundtrack is intact.

Having a flushing toilet is a blessed mercy, and one we shouldn't take for granted.

wow. I've watched 8 seconds and it stopped to buffer. "in a world where evil is arising" is all I've seen and I KNOW it's terrible.

You technically cannot really bash it on such a terrible setup because it's supposed to be a comedy/parody of sorts, so it's not supposed to be taken seriously... however, prolonged exposure to the trailer will teach you that the bad setup is the least of it's looong list of problems...

I was actually offended by the first few seconds and closed it. Ugh. Today of all days.

I saw that after watching the rest. it looks like it would be decent for a B Movie, but the fact that it's INTENDED to be a B movie, and that's it's so obvious about it, makes me want to scream a little.
