Here is a thread. It is for ALL video game related stuff. The PS3, Wii, X-BOOKZ660, whatever.

Mainly because there are a lot of threads started that don't actually have a lot of subject matter to go on past 20 or so posts without getting really offtopic.
Then they CLUTTER UP THE ONLINE ORGY.

But in THIS topic, you can discuss WHATEVER. As long as it is videogame related somewhat.
Otherwise it is offtopic. INGENIOUS?

If you want to introduce a new topic for discussion, give your post a title. This will make it noticeable. People will see it and think "HEY. A new topic. Let's talk about that until it runs out of life, then we can talk about whatever else."
Let's see if this works. (It won't! Maybe.)

NOTE: Anyone who starts a "My system is better than your system" argument is dumb and poop. :)

LET'S START OFF THE THREAD WITH...
Oh my god did you hear about the what with the thing and the WOOOOAAAH!

It is gameplay. If you've played the original 3 games you'd know (The bit where he hits the two robots with his wrench is definately - as is the rail grinding bit.) Also, all cutscenes in Ratchet and Clank are done real time using the in-game graphics. Plus, they said it was ingame on the preview on 1up where the video came from! :p

Oft99
21 Mar 2007, 19:32
Now...just to point out.

Of all of the Spore videos there is a perticular one that whets your apetite the most which everyone should see. It's the one that gives you the best idea of how the game is played and what it'll be like.

It's HUGE, and takes you in great detail through all of the main phases of the game (with the exeption of the so called "molecular" stage which I personaly think doesn't exist.) It goes into great detail on the creature editor and the possabilitys of creativity (it looks to be INCREDIBLY easy to use. I love the bit when he makes a care bear.)

So of all videos this is the one everyone must see.
Oh, and do you want to know the best part? As some may have noticed, this video is completely outdated in the game version.
To think that Spore nowadays is EVEN BETTER than how this video shows! Oh, the mind wobbles.

The video itself?
To access it. First open THIS (http://www.xspore.com/spore_videos.html) page.
Scroll down to find the picture of the media player with LAUNCH PLAYER written on it. Click it.
Then go down to the dropdown menu in the bottom-left corner of the media player and click the one that says "Will Wright GDC 05"

Enjoy.

PS: I heard quite a sad rumor (that looks to be quite true) that theyve axed out the underwater bit at the start of the creature stage shown in the movie. Shame.

The graphics look great, what with the shadows moving as the sun moves during the day and all that (at least, I got that impression from it) but my guess is that the game is going to be nearly identical to the other ones, like how San Andreas and Vice City were identical to GTA 3.

Is that a good thing? Meh. The game's fun, but I personally found that once you'd driven round Liberty City smashing stuff up and having a laugh for a few weeks, the rest of that game and the others just weren't quite the same.

I think Crysis is the first game that creates really realistic looking vegetation.
And also FarCry was one of the better games in that field.

Vista optimizes a lot from what I understand, so it'll be easier to run better games on lesser equipment....granted, for Crysis you'll still need a top-of-the-line rig, but hey, you get what you put into it. Crysis looks to be worth it.

Just came back from a weekend away with two new games.

Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 for PC and Mario Vs Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis for DS.

March of the minis is great! you can complete the storyline in 3 days but the level editor sure is nifty and fun and adds tonnes of replay value.

EDIT: Just finished making a rollercoaster in RCT2 called "The Rocket"
It has 18.something intensity rating. No one ever goes on it. :)

I wasn't really talking about making a HARD boss, I was talking about making an impressive boss. They aren't the same thing.

For instance, the nearly-final boss fight against Greg Nightmare in Killer7 is technically easy, but it's one of the most surreal bosses I've ever seen, and it left quite a large impression on me.

The nice thing about actual Scrabble is the rule that you can't look at a dictionary to think of a word, it can only be used to check correct spelling.

Doubt there's any such rule on the internet.

Xinos
24 Apr 2007, 22:52
You're not allowed to use scrabble software to find words for you. It's still harder to cheat on online scrabble since it's much stricter on how you can "bend" words. Not sure what you call it in english. You can write "Use" but not "Using". Is it called basic form?

Betapet follows the rules established by international community, this also decides what kind of word list that should be used. This means words can be conjugated depending on the word list used. Betapet uses the SOWPODS and OSPD word lists.

Probably the Daily Mail, but still, you can't really make up something like that. There's such a thing as libel law. Although it turns out they made up the bit about the goat being live: it was dead already.

But yeah, Sony's PR department have gone from worse to even worse (they went from bad to worse a while back). Distastefulness aside, how could they possibly think this would generate more good PR than bad?

EDIT: The silly thing is that the theme behind this, the topless dancing, etc., was "how far would you go to get a PS3?", when they still have them on the shelves. Wouldn't "how far would we go to get you to get a PS3?" be more appropriate?

pilot62
29 Apr 2007, 21:53
Now, I'm pretty sure it's true (I'm also pretty sue the mail didn't fabricate the two page spread of it in Sony's magazine which they showed) but I think putting it the front page, and the way they reported it, was a bit OTT, even by the Mail's standards. It was a whole front page too, something they normally save for *important* news.

Yea, it was distasteful, but I can honestly say it didn't bother me. Let them be objectionable if they want to, what happened to that goat probably wasn't any worse to the lamb we eat. I mean, they killed a goat (so?) decapitated it (which is usual when an animal is butchered) gutted it, and fed people the offal (nothing wrong with offal). The only thing which, in my opinion, makes it objectionable was the way it was presented.

I don't know why people hate the Mail. I mean, I know it's right wing (although that really doesn't bother me) and it's not the most reliable rag in the world, but that's hardly a reason to hate it.

Well, I guess the Wii's dead in my eyes. The concept had the potential to be amazing and it still does. Unless third party developers start taking it seriously, I doubt I'll ever get one.Posted "audition" reply. Hopefully they liked it:

I would like to offer a different viewpoint again. As far as I can tell, the battle lines are drawn here between "hardcore" gamers who have been fans for years, even decades, who love their difficulty and cry out when dumbing down is mentioned, and "casual" gamers and their supporters who want to broaden the market and encourage new gamers, even if it means sacrificing some of the purity of gaming.

Well, how about this: I've been gaming for 13 or 14 years now. I'm passionate about gaming, I read and write about it with a fierce pride, I've put in thousands of hours on PC, handheld and console. And yet, I'm not very good at it. Be it poor hand-eye coordination or timing, or an inability to problem-solve quickly and consistently enough, I simply do not have the talent. I persevere, because of my love of gaming, but the fact remains that I will always try easy mode first, I rarely play online because more often than not I get my backside handed to me, and I tirade at the relentless increase of the number of bottomless pits in Sonic games.

I therefore feel somewhat insulted when I read comments about "if you like easy/kiddie games, if you prefer fun to art, then you aren't hardcore". Over 200 hours on Advance Wars: Dual Strike, nearly 100 hours on Meteos... the games may be "kiddy", but the players certainly don't have to be.

On a different subject, games as art. I'm going to go with the late Douglas Adams here: "I always get very suspicious of anything that thinks it's art while it's being created". The best things in life are things that have been made with good craftsmanship in mind. Good books, the ones you get a buzz from reading and give you the best insights into the human condition, are ones that have been written to be literate, not literary, that look to create something people will enjoy and hang the critics. If it turns out that it's art after the fact, that someone wants to come along and stick a rosette on it, then there's nothing wrong with that. But anything aiming to win such a prize... well, it's just not going to be as enjoyable to read. And it's the same with games. I don't care much for the idea of art. Drawing, writing, designing, sculpting, sure, go to it, but you should be looking to make something good, something well-made something you think people will enjoy. Please don't do it because you want to make a work of art.

It annoys me that people assume easy games are for kids. Kids have way more patience than the rest of us. And at that age their minds are tuned to learning everything, unlike adults who will have a much harder time getting the hang of gaming.

As for graphics.. it all depends. Loco Roco is super awesome because of how cute it is. I think it's more in how the game adresses you. If the game treats you like a kid then it's a childish game..

200 hours?
Damn. I only have a tiny 100 hours into it.

Why does everything has to be ungodly difficult to please some people.
Easy =/= Childish

I don't like how people seem to want to go back to the "Nintendo Hard" days. The original Metroid sucks because you never know where to go, what to do, you can't easily save, and you always start out with very little health, no matter how much you should have.

The Metroid series has now fixed all of those problems, and it's much better because of it. Easier? Yes. Entertaining? Yes, in fact, even MORE so.
Constantly being faced with a game over screen because of a ridiculous challenge does not make something fun, even though some people seem to enjoy breaking controllers in frustration.
Easy things can still be fun. Killing 1000 Heartless in Kingdom Hearts 2 was really easy, but damn was it awesome.

I honestly don't care much about difficulty being dumbed down.
STORY being dumbed down, however, is simply inexcusable. I'm one of the few people who highly values a game's story (Though I do value a game being fun, too :p ). I adored Killer7.
I hope to god that No More Heroes is going to have as good a story, but I'm not sure if it will.
I want a Wii game that'll break the mold as much as Killer7 did.

Originality is something I adore, and in an industry full of sequels and same-old-same-old, it's something I do not see enough.
Probably a big reason for that is that it's practically impossible for indie developers to make console games. It's just too expensive. The underground scene has helped practically every art medium grow. We need more of that.
The indie scene for COMPUTER games, however, is awesome. There just needs to be a way for consoles to reach out to those developers.

First Metroid Prime was alright, I beat that and then got near 100% on the second run on hard, but MP2.. Impossible. MP2 gives you beacons that show you where to go (if you have that turned on).

That's better than not even trying to show you where you're supposed to go next in a massive, confusing, repetitive maze.
So yes, it HAS gotten easier. Even if it's still hard, it's still easier than the NES version.

another thing is that people always assume that any game with "cute" or cartoony graphics is easy or a kid's game.

I mean, the original Mario bros is still quite hard (only have one hit point... and you can easily fall off around spinning obstacles)
