I've only Played Chrono Trigger on an emulator without proper sound. A decent portable version is right up my alley.

Aparantly CTDS is going to be an enhanced port (eg. FFIV GBA) rather than a super-dooper 3D remake (eg. FFIV DS). This is good thing.

Hopefully they'll release it in europe this time.

Also a PSP port of Chrono Crosss would be just dandy.

EDIT!
I've found something totally epic! Over at the Grim Fandango Network's forums they are working on a mod for HL2 that's got something to do with Grim Fandango. I haven't unearthed any more info yet, because I JUST saw it, but you guys can check out the link for yourselves.

Wow, I've been starting to get a little paranoid on them video games.

I just got Half Life from maybe a month ago, and the Source version with it. No real idea why I did got both versions. They're pretty much the same. But anyways, I wanted to see which mods I should get, and I immediately spotted Afraid Of Monsters. A horror game. So, I got the Director's Cut version, as it should be much better. I'm a scaredy-pants, so I was pretty uneasy about playing it. The first thing I played was the tutorial, of course... It was in that little bedroom, you turned on the light, went down the hallway, blah blah blah. Suddenly, I come to this little outside place. Gun and flashlight, It tells me to pick it up. Split second after I pick it up, it says there is something in the bushes. I immediately lodged myself into the corner. It's a little backyard like place. Some bushes, it's sorrounded by brick walls. I have my flashlight on. I wait a few seconds..

Then BAM. Holy sh-

He's right besides me, the monster.. The flashlight had a bug and didn't illuminate him until he was besides me. And the worst part was that it Illuminated him completely. I was so scared. I was extremely paranoid.. He looked like a guy with a bloody shirt, his face completely box-like, maybe it was mutilated, but to me it looked like a blood-stained paperbag.

Then today, i was playing Half Life. The Source version though, but doesn't really matter. I was going around in the chapter Surface Tension. Openin' some doors.. Shooting some bad guys. And then it seems like it's pretty quiet. I walk around and I see a door, which I try to open. And holy hell there stands a security guy, staring at me! I had my shotgun up and by pure reflex right clicked him. Instant death... Oops.

TL;DR - Stupid game story. I am very paranoid.

Heh, you need to play Hidden (a Source mod). That's multi-player paranoia :D

One of you is invisible, can move fast and has a knife with the ability to make someone explode into a shower of body parts if you use the slow attack. The others all have guns. You can be running along with your teammates on either side of you, then you hear a *whoosh* and the guy next to you explodes, the survivors go crazy and probably shoot each other.

So many fond memories of that mod :) Mostly from 4am.

.JeT
13 Jul 2008, 22:06

Ooooh, I love that game! It's not exactly a scary game, just a game infested with paranoia. The only problem is that it's too slow; especially if the good guys cluster together.
Also note that the Hidden isn't completely invisible, as there's a slight amount of distortion with his invisibility. Which only helps to increase paranoia.

Yep. The maps were designed with lots of things like air vents, fire, low lighting. You also had limited ammo, so you couldn't just shoot everything.

I'd never really noticed it being too slow, Plasma. Though I have only every played it at LANs in the early hours of the morning, when we're all sleepy. That might have something to do with it :p

New Wii add-on motion sensor thing.

http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/eMMuRj_N6vntHPDycCJAKWhEO9zBvyPH

Great, I guess.

Basically, the Wiimote hasn't been doing what everyone expected it to do; namely, tell the console it's exact position relative to the sensor. The ordinary Wiimote only has accelerometers and a pointer, so the console couldn't really tell where the controller was; only what it was doing. This will change that.

The potential for it is rather enormous. We might actually see games start doing interesting stuff with this instead of "shake the wiimote for extra points!"
Now if only they'd implement Johnny Lee's head-tracking technology... :p

Of course, this is something Nintendo should've implemented from the very beginning, but I'll let that slide.

I guess we'll know the details when E3 comes around tomorrow.

15 Jul 2008, 01:29
As far as I know the new sensor won't be able to track your exact position, but it will make the wiimote sensitive enough for 1:1 motion sensing.

It's not going to make the sensor bar obsolete or improve the pointer, so I don't see how this will really effect FPS games. First Person Sword games however...

It's not graphics making a difference in sales, it's graphic power making a different to the devolopers, just like GTA4 or whatever not coming out for the Wii because it's not doable. GTA4 wanted to be a top notch game technology wise, so its ambition was to exploit the graphical power of today's hardware, same with Devil May Cry 4 or whatever third party big name title.

You'd need around 100 more pounds to get to the PS3 level, though. Funny thing is, Devil May Cry 4 for example, is much better on the PC, even with a 50pound card, allows an extra difficulty that renders more enemies on screen, not because the PS3 can't handle it, but because the devs haven't figured out how to do this efficiently yet.

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention the 1.5 gig of ram and 1.8 GHz processor. But still, that's not too fast anyhow.

My card is the last of the AGP type, which for some reason is actually a faster bus than PCI-E which is what most gfx cards use nowadays.

According to internet graphs, Crysis on high settings with no AA, on 1280x1024 with your card, the 7900GT. Needs a dual 3.0ghz core, 3GB of RAM on XP to reach 10 FPS.

Even the 8800GT Ultra would only reach 30-40 FPS.

Seriously man, 60FPS is too much, and on high? Come on.

The bus difference I doubt makes that much difference, considering not even x3 you card on SLI would do what you claim, even less on your processor.

I've wanted to play this game since I first heard about it, and now I'll be able to, I suppose.
Not only that, but I really wonder how the Wii is going to be able to handle a game that was made for the 360. I don't know how it's going to be able to handle the crowds of zombies unless, you know, they remove the crowds of zombies. Hopefully that won't be the case.

So using the Sonic Jam's nine ways to improve Sonic games (http://sonicjam.wikidot.com/nssnsi:summary) page that Paul found (and made an article on at realvg.org), lets see what they did and didn't have:

1) More control over Sonic's speed:
-No, they still don't have that. Those friggin' Dash Pads are back too!

2) Less scripted events:
-Well, the video didn't really show any so far.

3) Make speed meaningful:
-I'd like to say yes, especially for the part of him running over water, but I know they're all done by using Dash Pads to get the necessary speed automatically, so no.

4) Restore pinball mechanics:
-Nope. In fact, they completely removed the Spin Dash move!

5) Include carefully integrated, slower-paced obstacle sections:
-Yes they actually did, by the looks of it! And I don't just mean the Werehog levels.

6) Increase player choice:
-Sort of. They've actually added in different paths to the goal, but by the looks of it they didn't do it nearly as much as they should've.

7) Remove bottomless pits:
-No. Although the fast-speed sections now have linear motion so that you can't fall off the edge.

8) Make challenges more forgiving.
-No.

9) Remove unnecessary play styles.
-GODLY NO! The Werehog mode is completely non-Sonic!

The Spin Dash and rolling into a ball were cut since Sonic 2006.
At least he still balls up when he jumps. That was more of his main feature than his roll-into-a-ball-when-on-a-slope. Well, as long as you're not playing as the Werehog form.

Meh, I care balls about Sonic games since they have been reduced to crap. They try to hard making it "fresh" and "new" and always have the games run very linear. In the Sonic Unleashed trailers, it shows it like in 2.5D. 3D, shown from the side. To me, all it looks like is for the player to hold right direction. (When they have to go right)

I want Street Fighter 4. It's actually the only Street Fighter game I've been seriously interested in, mostly because it looks so new, and diffirent. To be honest, in the giant pile of Street Fighter games, the only one i played was Street Fighter 2. And i had fun. But i seriously want number 4!

I wouldn't have an issue with it normally if it wasn't blatantly obvious that the protagonist was made a white male western on purpose, to let the game's target demographic relate to him more. That is unless there's a perfectly good explanation as to why they don't send over entire armies to deal with the threat rather than focusing on just one person.

Usually because they don't know it's there.
In RE4, Leon had no idea of the zombie threat, he was just there to search for a hostage.
I haven't finished the game, so I don't now if there were more reasons to this.
But there could perhaps be other reasons, like conspiring against the character(wanting him dead) or to keep it secret. Or because he's a Rambo/Snake/Gordon Freeman/Master Chief type guy that is freaking invincible and requires no help to get the job done.

I do see how it could be seen as racist. But I'm pretty sure Capcom didn't sit down and think "You know what I really hate black people. Let's make RE5 in Africa so we can only kill black people."

It just happens to be in Africa, meaning naturally the zombies happen to be black. Yes it's a bold step by Capcom, but god golly it isn't racist. And also to people saying well why did they choose to set in in Africa? This is the 5th game in the series... it's not like they've been attacking the black race exclusively for a while now. In fact in the other games I don't remember seeing any black people at all. Is that racist?

It's not racist to kill blacks if they're zombies. It's not even racist to kill a black man because you don't personally like him, surely it's insane, but it's not racial abuse by any means. It's just the media loves to make up stories about racism, because they sell.
It's only racism when an omniscient being reads your mind and concludes that you killed him based on the fact you think he's a lesser human than you because of his race.

That doesn't mean I don't believe per example that the many cases of cop abuse towards afroamericans isn't racism. I believe it is. I just think the society has changed the meaning of the term racism way too much to the point I can't tell my black friend that I can't see him when we're out in the night drinking or whatever because hohoho, it's racial abuse. Come on. He's black, why are we denying the facts to sound politically correct? There's no point.

I just think the society has changed the meaning of the term racism way too much to the point I can't tell my black friend that I can't see him when we're out in the night drinking or whatever because hohoho, it's racial abuse. Come on. He's black, why are we denying the facts to sound politically correct? There's no point.

I could never have put it better.

White people never had to deal with this kind of s*** (http://www.ferris.edu/htmls/news/jimcrow/traveling/grid/20.htm). That makes all the difference, and that's about as simple as I can make it.yes, but neither have ANY OF THE BLACK PEOPLE!

seriously, all the slaves are dead now. sure, the parents of the people doing most of the *****ing about a video game were almost definitely subject to the severe racism of 30+ years ago, but these days racism is nearly nonexistant. and don't a single fscking person say I don't know what I'm talking about cause I live in the south, the HOME of racism (literally, I'm in louisiana, one of the main places of delivery for the slave ships), and there's really very little of it left. that isn't to say that nearly every black person on the planet hasn't experienced it at some point, but it's really not all that bad anymore. definitely not bad enough that we have to call a game out for a racist statement when it obviously isn't one.

I mean, really. the main character is white? well logically he WOULD be, considering the rest of the series revolves around a single military-type person going into an infested area (normally unwittingly) to accomplish something. now, when you're looking for a random military person you tend to think of a hairy white man from america or europe. sure, the stereotype isn't necessary but it's where most people are going to start. and starting there makes sense seeing as they want a foreigner for this roll anyway. sure, the main character COULD be black, but really, what's the difference? if the people playing the game are racist they're going to feel exactly the same about the game either way and the same is true for those who aren't. the main character being black doesn't change anything except in the minds of those who are racist themselves (whether they consider themselves racist or not. if you think there is ANY difference between a white and a black person performing the same roll, you are racist. context is irrelevant)

also, white people HAVE been through the same kind of slavery and nonsense like that. the cajun french people I come from were subject to tons of this sort of "racism". they were kicked out of europe a long, long time ago and shipped to canada. they were then kicked out of canada and shipped into the middle of nowhere down here in louisiana. africans were also not the only types of slaves, they were simply the most common recently. whites were sold as slaves for thousands of years before anyone stumbled upon africa. the slave market has never cared what your skin tone was, americans were the ones who apparently had a preference. even then, though, I'd be willing to bet there were white slaves too, they were likely just treated better due to generally being more educated.

I'm spanish, and apparently, the Resident Evil 4 place was in SPAIN. The currency was "pesetas", our previous currency before the Euro. (Even though they dubbed us... as mexicans, that sound quite different :p)

OUR REACTIONS:

"Racism! they want us to kill all spaniards! we need to STOP THIS."
WELL NO! our real reactions were more like:

"HEY! Spain appears in Resident Evil! THIS LOOKS LIKE MY GRANPA'S VILLAGE! I can't wait for this"

To all people claiming this is racist, imagine this scenario:
-Kid gets punched and insulted in school, for no reason at all in particular (you know how kids can be), and so time passes, and that eventually fades off... But that kid, now grown up, still gets paranoid some times, and gets angry at some jokes other people make, because he thinks it was against them, but it wasn't about him in particular.

The situation is almost the same... Black people suffered, but the situation is pretty much closed (still considering particular people...), but people can't forget easily...

What if the main guy is sent there to save survivors? Is it still racist?

Some people were a bit annoyed due to the fact the voices had Mexican accent, but this has nothing to do with racism, more to do with ignorance from the devs, or the fact they used a stupid stereotype that makes no sense.

Like Splinter said, watch the videos. The create mode is ridiculously simple to use, and there is a limit but it's huge. Apparently, the story levels (like the one in that video) don't even come close to filling it up. However, you can place an infinite amount of stickers in your levels.

Is that even possible? I thought it was just random sticks.nope. it's entirely structured. it's actually a legitimate language. korean if I'm not mistaken :p I was, it's japanese.

the symbols are very closely related to the symbols of one of the oriental languages. there are differences but they are very close. the structure I'd imagine is exactly the same but I can't remember if it was or not. either way, it's close enough and there are fonts and such you can find that bring the symbols into usage for english-speakers.

The modern Hylian script is based largely on the Japanese katakana syllabary and functions in a very similar way. It also has a set of numerals and punctuation.

The Wii is technicaly the flipped version, btw. As the wikipedia article says: when the game first started developement it was being made entirely for the Gamecube. When they later on decided to make it on the Wii as well they realised that the remote you swing the sword with is held in the right hand, but the whole game was made with Link's left handed sword stance in mind. As a solution they flipped the whole game horizontaly.

I'm saying that Super Mario RPG is not a great game by any standards of the present and the only reason to like is by having it in your nostalgia chest of treasures inside your mind. It doesn't have anything that makes it remotely good, and not because it's old, you see, Fallout 1 and 2 whilst also old hold up in the sense they have a great story barely matched in today's standards, likewise its dialogue. SMRPG has nothing that hasn't been improved a millon times by present games, besides starring Mario, but that's only a reason to play it if you're a fanboy, or you've played it before, like I said. Nostalgia is a *****.
I'm sure that most 30 year olds wouldn't enjoy playing that game nowadays.

I can still go play the original mario and enjoy the heck out of it. all nostalgia aside it's just a great game. super mario RPG is the same. sure, it's been done since and it's been improved upon, but the original is still a great game. just cause twilight princess has more in it that makes the gameplay more interesting doesn't mean ocarina of time wasn't a better zelda game.

mario RPG kicks ass even now. sure, it's nothing special by today's standards, but it's still a good game and worth the $10 by any definition.

I'm just saying the game doesn't appeal to the general public anymore, and since you don't know the guy chances are he shouldn't be paying any attention to what you (or I) have to say, and stick to the fact, SMRPG is not a great game fellow, this ain't the 90s - and that's as close to a fact you'll get.

I agree however some games can be fun today, Super Mario RPG isn't really one of those, and this is when I do state my opinion, not only is slow paced but it requires the player to go through a really simple and boring story, that I would only recommend to people who have never played a RPG in their lifes or are 9 to 10 years old. Super Mario Bros is indeed still a fun plataformer because you boot it up and into the action, action you've been over a thousand of times before but you don't care because - well frankly I don't know - but given the choice, there's a million better time wasting alternatives on the internet. Super Mario RPG is to Chrono Trigger what Wiisports is to PES.
You take Mario and all his friends out of Super Mario RPG and like Miyamoto would say it's a crap game with pretty graphics.

Yakuza, "it didn't age well" is the phrase you're looking for.

That phrase is superficial. Super Mario RPG did age well, because there's games being made nowadays with worse graphics and harder interface. That wasn't my point.
This is why I cannot go around using gimmick phrases such as "it didn't age well" because you then get 10 people who struggle to understand and I end up having to repeat myself, like right now. Super Mario RPG was never a great game, it was just a game with Mario in it which allowed non jRPG fans to enjoy a game pretending to be a jRPG with half the depth, this isn't a bad thing, at all, but the game doesn't do anything remarkably well, seriously, and I liked the game, I even like it now, the same way I used to love "Hare Raising Havoc".

Unfortunately, your opinion is pretty damn wrong.
This game is actually a pretty great RPG that can be enjoyed even by people who usually dislike RPG's, since it's quite simple, without being too easy. It's long enough, it does have a good story to it, fun dialogue, features the characters from the Mario franchise everybody love, and for the first time ever featured Bowser joining forces with Mario, which was a pretty hilarious moment in the game. And it features enough hidden secrets to keep you entertained for a while.
The graphics are nice and the music is Superb, the gameplay is good enough for an RPG, plus it has platformer elements on it.

Like arguing about what YOU THINK is right and what is wrong? Generally speaking, if you really want to sound as clever as you are trying, at least link to an external homepage instead of digging/reel something up that you thougt sounded clever or plausible.

To stay on topic, 10$ is not the end of the world IMO, unless you are hit by the economic crisis and don't feel like spending 10$ dollars on a game which actually scored well(*) speaking of reviews - You should not buy it. End of story, no reason to over do your arguments. It's just the internet, not serious business.

Super Mario RPG is not by any means a great RPG, it lacks in all aspects that make a good RPG, the story is not by any means greats, seriously, this is like comparing the story in Little red hood with the story of The Da Vinci Code, both sold millions, both were loved by many, but one is a great book and the other one is a great tale for children. Chrono Trigger is a great RPG, Fallout 2 is a great RPG, Super Mario RPG is appealing to nintendo fans who have developed fanatism for the franchise characters and thus get all excited when Mario and Browser team up, like you. I enjoyed the game because I played it when I was 14, when I didn't have much RPG experience. I then played the Lufiias and the Secrets of Mana, and those were great RPGs. I don't think I ever disagreed with any of that, I know the game was great. I'm just saying that I don't know anyone who'd want to play SMRPG right now other than Nintendo fanboys, or nostalgic people that already played it years ago. You might think it's fun, but I'd have to disagree. Having Mario in a RPG with Browser as an ally was something that striked as very clever and fun 10 years ago, but now? We have Mario & Sonic in the olympics nowadays.
I fail to see what's exactly fun about that game anymore, the humor is not funny, the gameplay doesn't challenge one's reflexes nor mind and the story is not exactly a thriller. So I don't know, I just don't see how anyone would want to play that game today.

Enemy Territory, for example is a shooter game that takes everything from the battlefield series and improves upon it. unfortunately the game just isn't as fun. why? no idea. it's just not as much fun. tons of other games are the same. some games just FEEL better than other games. obviously this opinion differs from person to person, which is something you're having trouble grasping here it seems, but the fact remains that some games are just plain old fun regardless of whether or not there are games that do everything better.

fun isn't quantifiable. it just is. it's something a lot of developers of games these days have trouble grasping.

But is Super Mario RPG really fun if you aren't already prepared to have fun with it before hand? Unless you're a fan of the franchise I don't see how a guy in this present time could pick up that game, launch it on his new generation console, start playing and thinkg "wow, this is fun", because really, it's just an extremly tunned down RPG with a really annoying and slow paced story. If he's a fanboy though, he's going to enjoy seeing his loved characters in RPG situations like Mario and Browser together OH MY ****ING GOD, but chances are, your average gamer today, which is around 30 years old and has quite some cash to spend, is not going to spend too much time with Super Mario RPG. Hence my original comment you seem inclined to disagree with.
I hope you're not using Squirminator's father as an argumentative proof, because I'm sure there's 60 year olds out there who love Donkey Kong but what does that matter?

Can you link me to a source with the number of downloads in Wiiware?

Also, question: is Protoman worth getting for Megaman 9?

The pre-rendered graphics have aged terribly
I'm the kind of person that sets myself in a frame of mind equal to the era of a game. In other words, if a game had top-knotch graphics in its time, I'll still look at them with some sort of awe.

Thanks, but I already have Paper Mario 1 and Super Paper Mario, and having trouble getting The Thousand-Year Door. I'm in a second game of SPM, and didn't feel Paper Mario 1 was altogether worthwhile playing the second time yet because it felt a bit too slow.

The Lost Levels is NOT the japanese version (it is the american release on Super Mario Allstars.) so the cheats in the japanese one may be different to the U.S.A one.

Mainly because there are a lot of threads started that don't actually have a lot of subject matter to go on past 20 or so posts without getting really offtopic.
Then they CLUTTER UP THE ONLINE ORGY.

But in THIS topic, you can discuss WHATEVER. As long as it is videogame related somewhat.
Otherwise it is offtopic. INGENIOUS?

If you want to introduce a new topic for discussion, give your post a title. This will make it noticeable. People will see it and think "HEY. A new topic. Let's talk about that until it runs out of life, then we can talk about whatever else."
Let's see if this works. (It won't! Maybe.)

NOTE: Anyone who starts a "My system is better than your system" argument is dumb and poop. :)
