Captain Olimar is a character. and possibly the strangest character yet no less. http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/characters/pikmin.html

that should make for an interesting character. I now want to try him out.

In Nintendo games, some plant-based life don't cast shadows. See also, trees in Mario Galaxy.

It certainly looks pretty.

13 Jan 2008, 02:37
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Chronicles:_The_Dark_Brotherhood).

Evidently, you are Sonic and are embarking on a particular series of events. Somewhere along the line, a brotherhood is involved, the members of which are probably dark in some way, possibly relating to dark intentions or dark appearance.
Whether Sonic is a member of this brotherhood is unknown at the moment, but it is unlikely seeing as how Sonic has neither dark intentions nor a dark appearance. This may also be because of the dark brotherhoods inclusion in the game's subtitle, which insinuates that Sonic is going to interact with the brotherhood in some way, but will not be a part of it. Seeing as how dark things being evil is a common trope, the dark brotherhood could possibly be the main antagonists.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Due to delays in the completion of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, we’ve had to change the release date of the game to Sunday, March 9th.

I deeply apologize to the people who have looked forward to playing the game for so long and ask that you hold on just a little longer. Thank you for your patience.

And good thing it is too. Otherwise, it would pose a distinct advantage to friends that don't play the console regularly.it would be no different than any other game that lets you customize your abilities. sure, new players would have a bit of a disadvantage, but it wouldn't be overpowering. ever played call of duty 4 online? a level 1 player just dropping into a game for the first time lacks all but a couple of weapons and has no add-ons for those weapons. despite that, they still have adequate ability to play alongside everyone else evenly.

its all a matter of balance.

Personally though, I'd liked to have seen more arrangements, like the Angel Island Acts 1 & 2 one. I mean, I already have the original tunes. It would have been cool to see what they could have done with the same great tunes but with proper instruments (also interesting to see that Jun Senoue did the arrangement of the AIA1&2 music. Although contrary to that track listing, he didn't write the original tunes. Nobody's quite sure who wrote the music for Sonic 3. A lot of people did, but whether they all contributed to each song or whether each song was written by a different person, I've no idea).

Actually, there's good evidence that MJ did compose several of the Sonic3 songs that were included in the game after Sony had to leave him.Maybe. Maybe not. Certainly the work collated here (http://sonic-cult.org/dispart.php?catid=1&gameid=3&subid=2&artid=16) adds at least some weight to the theory.

Saying that though - by that article's own theories - if Jackson did contribute to the Sonic 3 music, Angel Island (and Hydrocity, and Marble Garden) weren't his work.

Ironically this means that the music I like more from Sonic 3 wasn't Jackson's work. Launch Base is okay, but Carnival Night's tunes really grate with me and Ice Cap, although it sounds good, is so repetitive it makes most other Sonic tunes look like Allister Brimble wrote them. Meanwhile, Hydrocity has awesome jazz in the best traditions of Star Light and Casino Night, while Angel Island Act 2's tune races along and builds to a really good climax.

Oh well. I'm probably going to attract much ire by saying that I don't think Ice Cap's music is that good, but there we go.

The thing I find odd about that is that they say the PC version of Sonic3 had the music changed, and said that there may be a PC/MegaDrive incompatibility issue somewhere. However, a much better comparison is how those songs, only those songs, were changed for Sonic3&Knuckles!

Hah I saw an ad for that the other day on soem website but I actually thought it was some sort of webcomic. :p

Hey, there's a thought. A webcomic in the style of an Usborne Puzzle Adventure book, with a puzzle to be solved by the reader at the end of every update instead of every page. Mind you, the updates would probably have to be of the "large and infrequent" form for it to really work.

This Professor Layton and the Curious Village (http://www.penny-arcade.com/) thing looks pretty cool, but I can't see any indication as to whether it's actually been released or is going to be released in Europe. Any thoughts?
I don't think it's out here yet, as it's only just launched in america.

The thing I find odd about that is that they say the PC version of Sonic3 had the music changed, and said that there may be a PC/MegaDrive incompatibility issue somewhere. However, a much better comparison is how those songs, only those songs, were changed for Sonic3&Knuckles!

You won't believe how different the music is on PC than on the Megadrive. Seriously, NONE of the tracks are the same.

I only thought it didnt have online play because Shockdude's post only mentioned online leaderboards and a chat function. I therefore assumed it didnt have anything else or he would've mentioned it. Evidently I was wrong, but I didnt know anything else about it because I have no intention of buying, and therefore didnt read up on it beforehand... which seems reasonable to me

Again, maybe Im just being too vague. I wasnt talking about the graphics, I was merely stating that the screenshots told me very little about the game, and were therefore (in my opinion) nothing to '**** my pants' about. Is this for sure? Mario kart DS had 8 cups, with 4 of them being new tracks, and the other 4, old ones. It'd be a shame if they had HALF the tracks than the DS version.

EDIT: I readed trhough IGN, and acording to them, there are at least 16, 8 new, 8 old. Don't know if they unlocked all, since they didn't unlock any character yet, and there was proof for playing as a mii, when it wasn't an starting option.

Mario Kart Wii has been confirmed to have at least 32 tracks: 16 of them being entirely new, while the other 16 are remakes of older tracks from prior games of the Mario Kart Series

That's 50%. A liiiittle bit too high for my tastes, especially since they chose courses I didn't especially like.

I am very interested in seeing what's going to be new in this game, even though I'm not really a big fan of the series. In the April/May Edition of the Games for Windows magazine, there is a 12 page review about the game [13]. This review explains that, in The Sims 3, your sims' houses and the neighbourhood will be entirely in one seamless, continuous map, and states that "what you do outside your home now matters as much as what you do within,". It also states that the typical bladder and energy motives will be overhauled, and replaced with "discrete moods".

But that game in particular angered me immensely. It did several things the original didn't.
For example; you could get crushed randomly by falling objects even if you were on top of them, if you were underwater the spikes would propel you 50 feet in the air, he runs full speed without you even touching the directional pad, it has a horrid frame-rate, the reverse thing in the Bonus stage keeps flicking between clockwise and anti-clockwise. You touch it and it keeps going back and forth.

Sega are mostly just publishers thse days. They dropped out of hardware development in 2001 and almost dropped out of software in 2003 with some buyover.

The only console development studios they have now are Sonic Team, United Game Artists, Sega Studios USA (Sonic Team USA), Mobile Content R&D and Sega Studio China (everyone else was dropped or shifted to arcade development). And we all know how Sonic Team has fallen. :p

Previously they had WOW Entertainment, Sega-AM2, Hitmaker, Amusement Vision, Sega Rosso, Smilebit, Overworks, Sonic Team, United Game Artists, WaveMaster Entertainment.

So, theres a new Sonic game in development.

It's called Sonic Unleashed, features 2 & 1/2D game play, and is apparently built on the Sonic Rush game engine.

It's in development for PS3, 360 and wii. Theres rumored to be at least one new character. Sonic is also a werewolf now. go figure.

mother of god! that video ACTUALLY looks good! it's like they took all the 3D sonics and realized sonic doesn't work in 3D then came up with a game that plays EXACTLY like sonic was meant to play...I may actually buy that one....

At least it has some 3D sections like "Sonic and the secret rings" so apparently, it'll have something different.

Anyways, it's still on developement... I hope they won't screw again.

Right. So W:aSO and Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution came out in Europe recently, Mario Kart Wii will be coming out soon, and Sup's tempted me to want to get Excite Truck, which I never bought.
However, I don't have a job, I need to save up to go to Canada in the Summer, and my final exams start in nine weeks.
WHY DO THE GODS TEMPT ME SO?!

Oh, also, I think I feel the need to try push cartoonish golf game Albatross18 (http://a18.ogplanet.com/main.og) on anyone whose interested. Half because my 'study time' is me unmonitored with a computer to 'help study' (don't worry, I'm well capable of getting the results necessary to get the college course I want), and half because people like Zeor have been playing for a year now, meaning that it really is one of those "doesn't get boring" games. (people like Paul, Melon and SupSuper only joined later)
...and anyone that's put off my the game "because they don't like golf" deserves to be shot.
(actually, the full list of people in the clan, most of which are from this forum, can be found under Member Info here (http://a18.ogplanet.com/guild_home/index.asp?gId=realvg).)

Edit: A new sonic game? Hang on, I'll ready my earplugs.

Re the new Sonic video thing: I dunno, that camera still strikes me as disorientating, particularly if it's going to keep switching from side-on camera to fixed camera to behind Sonic.

Sounds like another Teruhiko Nakagawa (Sonic Rush Adventure and the Blaze remixes for Sonic Rush) soundtrack. Not that this is a problem, simply an observation. I know my Sonic composers (although I still have no idea who did most of the music for Sonic Next-Gen)

Re Excite Truck: Awesome. Particularly with an SD card (I'm partial to using Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 music on it, but that may just be me)

Re Albatross18: Also awesome. That's not entirely fair to Dan though, he started playing some time before me. I just overtook him is all ;)

Re Audiosurf: What's not to like? You're turning music into a crazy coloured rollercoaster. The block puzzle games are just there to give your hands something to do.

Plasma
1 Apr 2008, 17:25
The best thing about Audiosurf is that the speed is synched to the song you're playing. Meaning that in slow, quieter parts of songs, the game slows down, and vice cersa for fast parts.

As for myself, I think I'll use Gamestop's "trade in two Wii games, get one for free", so I'll trade in FarCry Venegeance (it has a reputation of being a crap game, but it honestly wasn't that bad presuming you weren't only buying next-gen-quality games) and The Simsons Video Game (it was a good game, but really for it's humour, not for it's gameplay. Classic EA.) for Mario Kart Wii when it comes out. Because the exams are coming up, I'll put off buying Excite Truck until after them.

(fun fact: apparently Zeor's been playing Albatross18 for 210 full hours and counting. Pretty good, for a free game)

Excite truck: I liked the bgm track too, in fact I didn't get an SD card until I was halfway through mirror mode. By that point I was entirely sick of it.:p

Sonic: Not only have they bought back 2D, but they've brought back sonic's classic potbelly and stopped all that crush40 nonsense.

Why games are released in some countries way before others is one of the biggest mysteries of our time...

kikumbob
10 Apr 2008, 18:03
I've always assumed companies do that so's they can focus on marketing the game in one country at a time. I never worked out if that was a big enough reason to do it though.

And according to this (http://spong.com/article/14891/Europes_Smash_Brothers_Brawl_Release_Still_Unclear ?cb=478) article, everyone is confused.

Why games are released in some countries way before others is one of the biggest mysteries of our time...

First of all, some games are made before they're finished being dubbed as dub jobs are usually external to the company and don't start until the game is finished, so it's usually launched in Japan first.
When a game is launched in one country, loads of media is aviable of said games, images, reviews etc, therefore other countries which do not have the game yet do the marketing for free, making articles etc (these are usually the smaller communications since the bigger ones get beta games anyway), with the internet it's even better, since those who have the game do the marketing for those who don't, making the market bigger. This way, no effort has to be done to do marketing pre release (note how games don't usually advertise until they're in the market?), all the pre release marketing is done by gradually launching the game in different countries, and then they can focus on stablishment publicity once the game is out, this way they save money and they let the dubbing companies do their job properly. There's also production, shipping and other less fun stuff that affects the release of the game in foreign countries, but I don't know much about that to comment.
simple stuff really, no mystery.

You forgot the last part, that few people buy two games at once. Nintendo wants us to buy one game first, then the other one. I guess it took more time to translate stuff in Smash Bros, and that's why it's AFTER mario kart here... They'll wait for us to get more money for the next. And you said everything else, yeah.

Yeah, seems quite a lot.well yeah, but the average game is going to have at least as much text to translate. you've got character chat text, signs, tutorials, etc. I don't think that Brawl really has THAT much more text than any other game would have. sure, the trophies are plentiful but the complete lack of text anywhere else pretty well balances that out to be about average, in my mind.

either way, though, it can't possibly have 4+ months worth of text translation. even WITH 5 languages.

The average game (that I'm aware of) doesn't have that much text, though. Only RPGs, and in those cases, they don't need to research other sources. Anyways, yeah, the extension seems more than unnecesary.

I'll post my friends code when I bother to write it down.

EDIT: I love this game! Especially being able to download ghosts online! And the motion-sensing makes driving a lot easier this time.
There's a lot more Mii involvement. The Mii you select as your own can be used as a driver and other Miis on the system appear in some courses, from watching the race from a stand to being sponsors of a track.
Super Mario Galaxy makes a small impact in this game, but not as big as Super Mario Sunshine. Although there isn't a road dedicated to it, Rainbow Road does have star bits floating around, and if you listen closely, you can spot that the backround music was modeled after the game's soundtrack. Also, a certain something awaits you if you have a Super Mario Galaxy savegame on your Wii.
Oh, and the quickest way to get your first unlockable is to beat the Time Trial ghost on Luigi's Raceway.

The biggest update is the bikes, they can do wheelies to gain a little speed for a few seconds and drift differently than the cars. The cars can instead of wheelies get a super miniboost when drifting. (A mini boost is when your tires get hot and go in BLUE flames, super mini boost is RED flames).

The online mode is based on points, starting from 5000, you gain/loose points and only play with gamers of your own skill.

Well, I was just mentioning some of the things not many people know (I've done a master on this stuff), for everything else there's production delays, international shipment and most importantly, delaying it so it fits strategic date which is basically the date were they believe it will sell the most copies (ie: no competition titles on that time window, no inside competition, special gift time of the year etc...)

Well, i've just been playing online on wifi.

The wii wheel takes some getting used to! so for the races, i often use the wii classic controller.

Also, don't forget that you have to send your ghost data to the other people if you want them to see what time you got on a time trial. Do it in the Mario Kart Channel.

Yes, i've already got the channel downloaded.

I haven't tried any time trials yet though.

Added both Shadow and Plasma, but the game still says "you are not friends yet" so I hope the game finds out itself that we added each other..

It should be fixed now, because you appear on mine.
In related news, my friend managed to get on the Continental top 10 times for Maple Treeway. Huzzah!
Also, what does it mean when the wheel sprite beside your name in online matches is gold? Mine is, and I don't know why.

Oh, and Shadowmoon and Wexzuz: don't forget to send me the times on your tracks. I explained how above.

The golden wheel means you used the Wii Wheel a lot.
Just beat Alex' Luigi Circuit time by 5 seconds I think:D I might try to make a good time on one of my favorite tracks.

The steering wheel? i'm crap with that at the moment.:(

I've already got onto the 100 CC grand prix.

Oh Wexzuz, yes you appear on mine, so its fixed now, you must need to restart it to get it working.

Haven't had a game with anybody here yet though.

Shadowmoon and Wexzuz: don't forget to send me the times on your tracks. I explained how above.

Yeah, i'll do it now.

I've been seriously slacking.

I've had the game for almost a week and I haven't even finished 100cc yet.

Also the wheel is the only way to play. I cannot fathom why anyone would use an analogue stick.

I was thinking more of being able to tilt it without having to attach the wheel.

I mean, it works for Excite Truck.

because, its easier to use the analog stick.

but, i do use the wheel at some times.

The analog stick gives better control over the game, but it takes most of the fun.

Ever wanted to scratch your head, and ended up falling off a cliff?

I can't get used to the wheel, so I use the Wiimote-Nunchuk combination.
Also, finished all, 50cc, 100cc and 150cc with Gold Cups, now just to collect star rankings, that should give a star at your name .

And i made a mistake, i'm actually close to finishing 50 cc.

Played online today, and boy are the people good on there! i won about 3 games, though.

In most matches online, i usually come 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.

The lowest i've came is 9th. This is when i used the wii wheel, though!

Yes, you could do that easily. But having a wheel is a lot more comfortable.

Anyway, today I decided that since the Mii is my most-used character, I should focus solely on getting the Outfit B for now.

Oh, also, did anyone else read the news about SSB:B getting free downloadable characters?

! Where? because if it's old, it was uncomfirmed by Sakurai itself. Anyways, with the Wiiware updates coming, this could have changed...

Mind posting where you saw that?

It was from a MiiPlaza newsletter (a few days ago), which I don't have as it was a Wii Message Board message (that I deleted), and I can't find it on their site.
What they said is that as the Wii Shop Channel introduces downloadable content (which is true), there'll also be including (IIRC, four) new characters. As a promotion, they'll be free to dowload the first week of the downloadable content section's introduction, and will cost 2000 Wii Points normally.

There's a channel as well, apparently.

Or maybe it is false. We'll just have to see.....

I'm pretty sure it will be in June, because most sites i've looked on, have said June.

But if it hasn't been announced on the actual website, then it must be an estimate.

One website listed the release date as January 1st 2020. How stupid.:p

I do believe that was an April Fool.

I do believe that was an April Fool.

Maybe there's something behind that, actually. There was some data extracted from the disc, with some incompleted data... there appeared Doctor Mario, Roy, and Mewtwo... Along with "Toon Zelda" (and another slot for "Toon Sheik") "Dixie" (probably Dixie Kong) and something that apparently hinted towards Plusle and Minum, 2 Pokemon like Pichu. Maybe like an Ice Climbers team.

Anyways, that was just Junk data, and hasn't enough to work properly. After finding that, people got paranoid, and was all around stating that there was gonna be an update as downloadable content for those. However, Sakurai sayed in an interview, that the wii has a disc based memory, not a hard drive, so it wasn't possible.

HOWEVER, Nintendo is about to release Wiiware, which is a service that can let you download stuff like games and downloadable content. With that, Smash could now get downloadable content...

I'm not saying it's gonna happen, just that it has chances now.

the reason why plusle and minum theory came up was becuase the spelling of the japanese was similar to the names
:p
