You don't have to pay anything to transfer virtually all (Including virtual console) of your digital purchases from the Wii to the Wii U. You only have to pay if you want to be able to play the game on the Gamepad display and customize the controls. If you don't want those features then it is 100% free process.
Oh, that's good to hear.
How is that done?
Will your old purchases show up on your new WiiU account and you can re-download them?
Or do you just copy the contents of the SD card?

You do a transfer process through an SD card if I'm not mistaken. The problem is that they are still tied to the Wii mode within the WiiU, so you can't just launch a VC game directly, you have to switch to Wii mode and then launch the game.

IIRC, they now use an account system on the WiiU too, instead of downloads being tied to the Wii console before.
Can I re-download those games on the WiiU again?
Because how would they know that I legitimately own the game, if I simply copy it from the SD card?
Couldn't I then copy games from anyone's Wii SD card?

The in addition to the WiiU's wii-mode-locked virtual console WiiU has it's own virtual console, with support for gamepad play but games cost a little more.

It's just a mess.

Well, this is how I understand it: If you purchased VC games on the Wii, the method to transfer them to the WiiU isn't simply copying them to an SD card. You have to run a transfer process, not sure if it requires you to download an application on the Wii or something. It does launch some specialized software that will copy all your files to an SD card(displaying a lovely animation of little Pikmins carrying your data to a spaceship or something) ready to be imported to the WiiU. You then insert the SD card on the WiiU and complete the process. After that, the games will not exist on your WiiU account, but rather within a virtual Wii account that exists within the WiiU itself, which as far as I know is tied to the console and not to your WiiU account. Also, you will no longer have access to those games on the Wii they were originally on. Basically, it's a bloody mess. Also, I don't know if it's possible to import data from multiple Wii's to the same WiiU, but my guess is no.

From my understanding, it is not possible to transfer these games to the WiiU account itself, you just have to buy them again, although I think they were offering some discounts, maybe for a limited time... something like that, I forget. Or maybe you can pay a fee to transfer them to the WiiU, not entirely sure. All I know is that it doesn't work the way you would expect something in 2013 to work.

Also, on the subject of WiiU accounts, games are still tied to the console. If you, say, accidentally explode your WiiU into an irrecoverable mess and proceed to buy a new one, you can retrieve your account but you won't be able to retrieve any games tied to that account. Nintendo could in theory change this later, but right now that's how it works.

The Wii U has 2 operating systems, the Wii operating system and the Wii U operating system. When transferring games from a Wii console to a Wii U console the games are transferred to the Wii operating system on the Wii U console. You can redownload the games as much as you want from the Wii operating systems Shop channel without any fees.

If you want the same games on the Wii U operating system (and the ability to download them from the Wii U operating systems shop channel) then there will be a small fee (Heavy discount over the original price, for games you transferred). This will also unlock new features like controller customization and gamepad display.

Yes the transfer is done via SD Card and a special application you download from the Wii shop channel to both the target console and the source console.

Edit: It's not hard or confusing, it's a very straight forward process and will become easier to comprehend once you own a Wii U.

They still tie your purchases to the console?
It was a strange and bad choice back in 2006 for the Wii already, but for 2013 this is just a joke.

Another question:
Do you actually need any WiiMote(Plus) controllers anymore?
Or can the whole UI be controlled with the new game pad?
What about the new WiiU Pro controllers?

I'm thinking of getting a WiiU and eventually want to sell my old Wii stuff.
Naturally, I'll get a better price if I also sell all the old games and controllers with it.
E.g. Wiimotes, MotionPlus attachements, nunchucks, wheels,...

I will probably get Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for the WiiU together with two Pro Controllers for classic arcade fighting action.
Thus, I figured that the nunchuck controller is obsolete, and if I can fully control WiiU's interface with the touchscreen game pad, preferably with the Pro controllers, I would have no need to buy new MotionPlus WiiMotes at all and could sell the old ones off.

Another question:
Any speculation when the new Mario Kart would come out?

MtlAngelus

I honestly have no clue what's going on in terms of controllers. As far as I know you can use all the WiiU functions with only the Gamepad, but I don't know if some games might actually require you to use a Wiimote. Local multiplayer games will definitely require you to have some Wiimotes lying around. Some might even require a Wii Remote Plus (or the Motion Plus attachment on a regular Wiimote). Nintendo Land does, at least. I don't know if the old Classic/Pro Controllers are supported.

Looking around, it appears you do at least require the old controllers to play original Wii games, as the Gamepad is not supported while playing in Wii mode. The new WiiU Pro Controller is also not supported by Wii games.

No idea when a new Mario Kart might be out. I don't think they've mentioned anything about it.

Keep the controllers, sell the rest. You'll still need them for the Wii Mode obviously and they also make use of motion+ controllers in Wii U games. Monster Hunter Ultimate can use the Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro and Pro Controller (The first 2 are tethered to the Wiimote)

Nintendo continues strong with regards to backwards Compatibility. Wii U can play almost every game the Wii can plus more, and the Wii has insanely awesome backwards compatibility, even compatible with Sega systems! And yes, I know they use emulators, but it works so damn well in comparison to the software emulation we get on Xbox360 and brief hardware emulation, software emulation and then no emulation on the PS3.

Wait... wait...

He was referring to the virtual console, the fact that you can play Mega Drive (Genesis to Americans) and Master System games on it - but ones that you download from the shop, and through an emulator. Dreamcast support would have been awesome but unlikely ;)

I just set up my Wii again with the intent to restart my vapourware Wii Linux distribution. Sooooo much nostalgia. I've got it all up to date as much as I feel like (I still kept my 3.2E system menu but I got my shop channel up-to-date). I have, however, had to order a component cable - I forgot that my TV doesn't have composite and I don't have a SCART adaptor on me! For now I plugged the composite into the Y port of the component input (aka the green one) - this gives me at least a black and white picture (albeit very noisy where things would normally have colour), and is usable enough but I wouldn't like to play games on it like this ;)

I just learned that New Super Mario Bros. Wii U can NOT be played with the new Wii U Pro Controller.
Albeit this new game does not utilize any motion controls, it requires a Wii Mote for multiplayer.

I really hope that Nintendo add support for their new controller in a patch, or I will not buy this game, and furthermore, may not buy a Wii U at all.

It's the same for the game Nintendoland, which is bundled with the console, which requires a Wii Mote for several multiplayer games as well.

Makes me wonder why they didn't add accelerometers to the Wii U Pro controller, so that it's basically a Wii U Game Pad without the screen and fancy (read useless) gimmicks.

So far, the only game I want is Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
The next Mario Kart hasn't been announced yet and Nintendo might f*ck up the controls for that too. :P

Ridge Racer: Unbounded is a silly game with a silly name but is somehow absolutely no fun at all.
The po-faced opening cutscene gave me the bad sort of Mirror's Edge flashbacks and the game's gimmick is startlingly dumb (earn Boost to drive through walls!). Worst of all the tracks are repetitive. Repetitive in that they are literally strung together from the same blocks used in the rubbish and shallow track editor.

Although I have to admit it would be tempting to dress a couple of characters as Ganondorf.
I have read a few reviews and all of them said that the port was done well.
The game supposedly runs almost always at 60FPS, and unless you're a competitive player or intend to play online, this shouldn't affect you.

A few background polygons and textures have been removed or reduced.
Also, this World Tekken Federation is not supported.

But you get several Nintendo costumes, a game mode with Super Mario items, plus all of the DLC characters and stages are available for free from the get go.

The Wii version is the most complete version of TTT2 so far, plus more.
And nothing wacky, since you don't have to use those costumes and have the exact same game as on the other consoles.

I'm only interested in the Nintendo WiiU because I won a Wii a few years ago and my kids like Nintendo's Mario games (Mario Kart, Mario Bros).

Speaking of Shinobi things I didn't know about, guess there's a new one out on the 3DS. Reception has been fairly mediocre, but pretty consistently passing, and I guess the most common complaint is that it's hard as balls, but it looked to me like Shinobi 3 with 2.5D and much more sophisticated combat, so, I was sold. Picked it up at a pretty big discount from Amazon, which for some reason I feel a little bad about, but oh well.

If I'm being honest, not sure! iirc I tried out Revenge of Shinobi and wasn't a big fan, but I loved Shinobi 3, and it compares fairly evenly to that. It's a hell of a lot harder and more reflex-based, and the presentation seems a lot less up-to-date, but I'm enjoying it enough to stick with it.

e: the fort name is Badashes the Bloated Problematic Bowels of Stench.

Yeah we have a wererhino problem (http://i.imgur.com/95tPs41.png)

I'm not sure where the first wererhino came from, but I think one of our own was turned into one when the first one bit his leg off and he inexplicably survived. He killed quite a few dwarves when he turned. I think we were only able to take him down once he turned back. Looks like he was buried respectfully as a dwarf instead of a monster.

Hard to say if there are still more wererhinos among us, though. Worth noting that the necromancer escaped alive, so there's a reasonable chance we haven't seen the last of the undead menace either. All this has been so much that I barely have any idea what I should even be doing with the settlement. Most of the guys with useful jobs were killed off, so I need to sort out who's doing what.

Oh yeah, Pikkul was killed by the second wererhino, so now none of my dwarves even have nicknames. Unprecedented.

Creatures Of The Night are the the best thing to happen to Dwarf Fortress in ages. Way better than Forgotten Beasts. That were cool in theory, but most of the time either too easy that they're not entertaining, or too hard that they're not worth fighting.

Say, in DF-related matters, have anyone else tried out Gnomoria? It's like a visual Dwarf Fortress, still early in development, considerably less complex and hard-to-play but also a lot less features, and constant updates? It's pretty great.

edit: Trying to find the place in adventure mode now, without much success, but the more recent adventure mode improvements are pretty cool anyway. I was travelling with a couple of humans but they kept being stupid. I lost my hand to an alligator while trying to save one of them, and then later he drowned himself while trying to fight badgers. After finding him dead on the bottom of the river I went looking for the other guy and he had been pretty much totally torn apart by alligators and/or wolves. The alligator what killed him came out of the river after me and I tried to strangle it 'cause I'm a wrestler but I couldn't get a good grip so I managed to get my dagger out of my backpack with my one good hand and stabbed it in the guts and it slunk off into the night so now I'm sitting here next to my campfire and I can't even stand up because my leg is gored and that may or may not be permanent so I'm just waiting here next to the fire in the middle of the night with my dagger at ready pretty much totally expecting to be killed by a night creature or wildlife. Punctuation.

e: Just savagely fought off and messily killed an entire pack of dingos while crawling back towards civilization.

e: I'm sort of realizing that crawling back to civilization on a mangled leg, dagger clenched in my only remaining hand, is sort of making this character an incredible badass. (http://i.imgur.com/SKQ2NLH.png)

e: Unbelievably, after a solid day and a half of crawling through the wilderness, and brutally killing everything that challenged me, I made it back alive. (http://i.imgur.com/TfpuTnJ.png)

Mewtwo appeared in Smash Bros during Generation 2, appeared in Generations 3 and 4 as a catchable Pokémon, and got its own unique move and appeared as a major character in one spin-off in Generation 5. No, it was not only notable in Generation 1.

The man is The Silver King. I'm not about to hunt a lavasioth and call it a career. Nay, I struggle through the G** tier by mydamnself so that I may confront the Yama Tsukami. Don't care about G***. I just wanna see this guy. He's supposed to be spectacular. And something of that size would be a proper crescendo to a hell of a hunting career.

Just finished the rathalos, and before that, the rathian, lavasioth, and the shogun ceanataur and terra cotta shogun ceanataur simultaneously. All that's left is the copper blangonga, which is a little exciting. And it means I'll have seen everything except the ukanlos, 'cause forget that thing. G** is punishment enough for a lone hunter.

I played Pokemon Red on my PC not too long ago*; I actually enjoyed it. I played through that and the remake of Gold (Heart Gold or whatever silly name it has) and I felt like both ended too soon; Gold in particular had pacing issues, very little actually stood out due to the rapid progression (squeezing two worlds onto one gameboy cartridge incurs penalties I guess).

I like going through old games from my childhood...
Played Doom a few weeks back, with a mod to make the weapons more even in power, far better controls and a *lot* more gore.

I suspect the graphics are very much geared towards 3D (Oooh!) explaining how odd it all looks, I don't mind the reused overworld and this is also the first time a Zelda game (since the DS has come out) uses BUTTONS for moving, rolling & attacking!

Don't forget it's like 8 months away from release so there is plenty of time to tighten up the graphics. It's Nintendo. They release information about a game when it's damned well ready for information to be shown about it and not a moment sooner.

Besides, I don't see what you're complaining about, I quite like the look of the game. It's somewhere between the more recent handheld games styled after WindWaker, and the original LTTP graphic style. I think it suits what they're going for perfectly.

As to the world map thing, do we have an image of the world map? They said it takes place in the same world, but they didn't say it was exactly the same parts of the same world.

And even if it is, who cares? That is NOT enough to write a game off. A lot can be done by revisiting the world of LTTP at another time, or even at the same time just with a different plot. The writing is what's going to sell the game, and we don't know anything about that yet.

As far as I know there is no world map released yet, there is however a series of screen shots comparing segments of LttP overworld to the footage in the trailer Nintendo released.

Link looks pretty reminiscent of the manual art from Zelda 1. I dig it.

The over-world thing is interesting. I doubt it'll be just a 100% identical recreation, there's a lot of scope for messing with peoples expectations. I wonder if the Dark world will make a return.

Edit: I just occurred to me that there's already been ] a sort of LTTP sequel that used the same map but featured a new story and dungeons (http://zelda.wikia.com/wiki/BS_The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Ancient_Stone_Tablets).

Yeah but that was episodic and limited to Japan. Yeah there is the bslegends website that has a patch to combine the episodes in to a single ROM that you can play from start to finish in a single sitting but eh (I might be thinking of BS Zelda though...).

Some of my favorite puzzle games are those that deal with navigating 3D spaces in 2D, so I'm already in love with the concept.

And while I don't long for the return of stylus controls, I do hope some of the note taking puzzle design returns from the DS Zeldas.

Yes, I was thinking the exact same thing. It should play like N - The Way Of The Ninja but with more of an emphasis on momentum, but it... just... doesn't.

Man I love those three games. It's a shame Investigations didn't quite hit the same high, and Apollo Justice was frankly a bit of a let down.

Oh yeah, the gameplay was great. The 3D evidence and forensics stuff as excellent and the sort of thing previously only seen in the bonus case from AA1. The story was a real let down though, and not just because of what it did to Phoenix.:p

Why is it only Nintendo understands the importance of backwards compatibility? Unlike Sony and their dead end cell processor, Microsoft have literally no excuse.

If you want me to upgrade to your shiny new box make it do everything the previous version did and more.

Also I bet 360 controllers won't be compatible with the thing despite the new ones being functionally the same. The biggest change is that they've re-named the back and start buttons.

Microsoft says the new controller is designed to work closely with the new Kinect, "allowing the two to be paired automatically to create seamless player syncing." That synchronization will be enabled by Wi-Fi Direct technology that pairs the controller with the new system.

I'm guessing this is why the old controllers won't be supported. The new ones also have vibrating triggers. :p

Because Nintendo largely reuses their old hardware so keeping backwards compatibility is probably fairly trivial, while Sony and Microsoft have ditched it all for "next-gen stuff".

At least their new x64 architectures bring them closer to the PC master race. :p

Sony had backwards compatibility, it cost them too much to keep though so they did something smart. They kept making PS2's, essentially they turned the PS2 in to what you'd call a stand alone add-on for the PS3. So they had backwards compatibility the entire time, it just cost you a small fee and some physical space in your living room if you weren't an early adopter.

Also I think the PS3 still fully supports PS1 games? Even if it doesn't the PS2 does.

Sony isn't new to the whole backwards compatibility thing, heck I'd go so far as to say that the PS2 being backwards compatible with the PS1 is what caused the PS2 to achieve such a large audience base as customers (both new and old) were buying in to 2 markets (PS1 and PS2) with a single console purchase (Huge bang for your buck). I know I'd probably have gone with one of the competitors at the time if there wasn't backwards compatibility.

And yeah, the fact that both Microsoft and Sony are moving towards more traditional CPU's should prove to be excellent for PC owners.

philby4000
25 May 2013, 15:20
They continued selling PS2s because people were still buying them, that has nothing to do with backwards compatibility. Nintendo kept pumping out Famicoms until 2003.

I'm aware of the PS3's PS2 BC: hardware for early American and Japanese units, then emulated for EU launch units before finally being removed altogether.

tl;dr: he's probably comparing the tight restrictions on what you can do (possibly including the always-on speech recognition thing if that's a thing?) with the absolute control of The Party in said book - they could monitor your every action, and sentence you to death for merely thinking about committing crimes. Moreover, they maintain a tight control on all media, ensuring people can read only what The Party wants them to read. It's probably this last bit to which the most parallels are being drawn as opposed to the death sentence bit ;)

Addiction. :(
Just like nicotine, heroin or catching all Pokemon.

Often I only bought a bundle for a single game that I was interested in.
IIRC, I never paid more than ~8€ for any bundle, so even for a single game the price was always good.

And true, in the early days, all of the games in those bundles were quite good, but later on, more and more fillers were added.
And at one point, the different bundles started to repeat games, which frankly was only a matter of time.

Wow.. I just realized I didn't give an opinion on BLOPS 2 (Black Ops 2) that just isn't not happening! it definitely has the best campaign it just is epic and has a good storyline, also has a level where you step into a room and dubstep starts playing, and Multiplayer is also still enjoyable, killstreaks are fun, overpowered and its kind of easier to get good games and nothing beats playing in a full party of 6 with constant orbital VSAT.. and Hardpoint is also a nice new game mode, the only thing I dislike about the game is the lack of specialist bonus and M.O.A.B killstreak which made MW3 so fun to play and rush on, and also the ammount of bullets needed compared to MW3 to kill someone, just doesn't seem as fast.

And with COD Ghosts coming out, and its by Infinity Ward, I honestly don't see a COD killer this year or any time soon :p

And I can see disagreement but I honestly think for CoD to be killed on consoles the FPS that kills it needs to be fast paced... that's why everyone plays it, I don't mind Battlefield but can't be arsed trekking the whole map to find someone.

Pretty much the only thing I see that could kill CoD on consoles is... Activision themselves. They have a horrible tendency to ruin their own IPs.

Yes, I'd agree with that. It's also why I emphasised consoles earlier - for PC, Loadout (still in beta) has the same appeal but is a much better game!

Or, at least, better than I remember CoD being. I haven't played any newer ones.

I had a little trouble having it to work, even with DOS emulators. It's pretty much an abandonware, no one cares to make a version that runs on newer OSs.
Though I'm no fan of point & click I still recommend just for the story alone. It's a very dark old gem.
