the reason why plusle and minum theory came up was becuase the spelling of the japanese was similar to the names
:p In what way? Is plusle/minum close to the phonetic Japanese of player? Because as far as I know you can't actually write Japanese using english words in any other way. :s

http://www.mialbum.cl/documentos_personales/6312557996-149591651-835-9298-1025.jpg

It would be a good pairing though, don't you think? Plusle's name orginates from "plus", and minum's from "minus". Just incase you didnt notice that..

mind = blown! What really blew my mind was that about half an hour after my post I was playing Pokemon Emerald for about an hour, in which I caught a minum and was challenged by two pairs of trainers who used combinations of plusles and minums. Take into account that these were the first encounters that I had of any of these pokemon in the game and you cant get a bigger coincidence than that.

guess I'll go ahead and post mine here as well.

Mario Kart: 4639 9378 4871

edit: anyone else finding that with the 4 new racers on the track that everything is overcrowded? every time I hit a banana I lose 3 places. a turtle shell is 5 and if I get hit by a bomb or fall off the course I may as well restart the map. the bad part is all these things happen 3 and 4 times more often than any other mario kart games. I'll be in first place by a HUGE margin, then I'll get zapped by lightning which throws me off the edge of something just to respawn where a turtle shell is coming at me and then get punted across the road by a heavy person, which sets me in 12th. this happens in some form or another in every single race. I can be completely destroying my competition but a series of overly-populated and inconvenient items will put me back to last.

I completely agree with you, I don't think the AI is any different, it's just that it gets quite overcrowded, and with items like the blue spiny targeting the leader, it can be quite hard maintaining the lead.

I generally find it's best to hang back a bit until the final lap as you get rubbish items when you're first anyway.

And also, what is the deal with the completely made-up times that appear after the race is finished? I have counted how many seconds after me the person in second place crosses the finish line, but according to the times he crossed a good few seconds before that!

And also, what is the deal with the completely made-up times that appear after the race is finished? I have counted how many seconds after me the person in second place crosses the finish line, but according to the times he crossed a good few seconds before that!well the game doesn't let the AI finish anyway, so I assume it records how far behind you they were when you crossed the finish line and post that time. haven't actually tested this theory yet, though.

cyph3r
29 Apr 2008, 09:24
I suppose that makes the most sense, although it is a bit wrong when you actually see the player cross the finish line if he isn't too far behind you. Still, having an exeption to the rule for how it calculates the race time isn't exactly good game design...

Can't say I quite agree with you there Aku. Except for the brutal tracks, such as Rainbow Road, getting a REALLY bad turn of events is nearly always counterbalanced because of those really powerful items you get nearly all the time when you're last, such as the Golden Mushroom.

Anyway, I'll add you once I get back to my Wiil, although I haven't been playing Mario Kart much.

Even though it's crowded, and it's easier to get sent back, it's also easier to climb positions. (well, except when you get literally BOMBARDED by all 11 people: blue + blooper + lightning + pow + rain of stuff being sent to you has happened to me D: included guy with star over me)

Akuryou13
29 Apr 2008, 23:10
oh I agree it's easier to climb. much easier to climb. you get back to position 12 and you get items like the bullet bill that send oyu screaming abck up towards the front. unfortunately, I always get to about position 6 or so and then become stagnant. at 6 you get a few nice items but almost nothing to actually get you back up in the front of the race again. you can slowly crawl your way back up but you're also in the middle of the pack surrounded by every other racer on the field. I normally end up with enough weapons to gain a few spots, only to be knocked back into 12th again with another series of spammy weaponry.

the part that bugs me, though, is that normally the knock backs are inconveniently timed. on 150cc, the grand prix becomes entirely random. the winner is just whoever happened to manage the higher positions more often than not rather than the person who actually did the best job at recovery. there's almost never the same winner twice in any given race of grand prix. 4 different people will win the courses once each. as I get better at the tracks I tend to keep first place slightly longer, but that doesn't stop me from getting sent back to the end of the line randomly without being able to do anything about it...

One thing I noticed is that the CPU sometimes... SAVES their items. I got beaten more than once for being red shell'd at the finish line... :(

But it's not bad, and this very not-badness, this actual possession of competence, lifts it above a lot of the competition in the "gaming webcomic" sector.

I actually find with Penny Arcade that strips usually either fall completely flat or are brilliant. And the number of the latter just seems to keep on increasing as the years go by.

Which surprises me, as I am not very in touch with the gaming world. Though looking back on it, most of the jokes are pretty accessible anyway.

Hoo-ray, more "cute and cuddly are not good for gaming" articles!
Really, how did these kind of people play games before the Playstation came along? Just about everything was designed for family fun then.
Actually, why do people keep thinking that the now-mainstream games were the standard for videogame history, when Mario and Pokemon and The Sims are pretty much the kings of games? (the only three game franchises to sell over 100 million games)

Come to think of it, the library of next-gen games is HUGE! How do people manage to play all of the good 'hardcore' games enough to give out about the games they don't like?

How to start...let's see. I'm ****ed off that Smash Bros Brawl is going to be released in June, but at least we have a solid release date *Shakes fist at America and Japan*. My brother got Mario Kart Wii and I've been having a go at it. Good, solid fun, in my opinion. The Wii Wheel feels natural in my hands, and Rainbow Road is HARD in this Mario Kart. Although the way some of the courses are done make it feel like a extreme sports game.

It's getting more violent as the series continues. The first two weren't very violent, granted you could shoot zombies head off and such but they didn't actually introduce blood to it until future perfect. It was also originally a lot more cartoony with the character design. But they seemed to have scrapped that a bit in the later games. I hate that because T2 had some of the best characters and concept art ever in existence. I guess that was EAs take-over. T4 apparently will have realistic characters with cartoony faces.

so....I purchased the Age of Conan collector's edition and it comes with 5 guest passes for friends to join you in age of conan. I, being a loser, have no friends to give said passes to, and so I offer them to you guys. no idea how many or if any of you at all are into MMOs, but if anyone's interested PM me. I doubt it'll be a problem but if more than 5 request the passes go to people I like more :p

So... the guest pass is like getting the game for free? Or just a trial?
I would presume it'd be a 1-month pass.

Is this one of those subscription based MMO's?
The price of an 'Age of Conan Playtime Card' is $29.99 for two months (or $14.99 a month), which is in line with the industry standard

What are the recommended or minimum specs?
I would presume the minimum requirements wouldn't be very high, considering it's a MMORPG.

Am I making too many questions?
Yes. Just like I'm making too many answers.

Do you think I'm pretty? :(
Normally, I'd say that depends on the viewers opinion on what is beauty, but for this case it's universally accepted that you are not!
Oh, except for Metal Alex, he thinks you look alright.

You left out the question mark.

As for me, I'd give it a shot except for that I have my second-level final exams coming up that won't be finished for another 34 days. Oh well.

So, anybody checked out the Penny Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com/) game (http://www.playgreenhouse.com/)? I have played through a fair bit of it and I must say I am loving it. The humor is obviously one of the best parts. Being of a point and click nature, it is literally swarming with little odds and ends that give you messages, with most at least garnering a smile, and some being down right hilarious. And the conversations are consistently top quality and are PA humor at its best.

The graphics, while not phenomenal, work well and add to the whole tone and style very well, and are colorful and nice to look at. Pretty much everything besides the actual world you move around in is in the style of the comic and is perhaps his best work to date, with everything looking very nice and stylistic.

The fights are a turn based affair, you select your weapon with the character you want to use and click on the enemy you want to attack, and then you have to wait for that character to "recharge" as it were to attack again. By pressing space at the right time you can block enemy attacks, and if you get it just right you get to counterattack them. There are also special moves which if you pull them off deal a lot of damage, and you can use items on yourself or enemies which have various effects. After fights your characters gain experience and get powerful as they gain levels, gaining new moves and and better stats and such.

Of course, the game is not perfect; it seems virtually impossible to run out of items, which makes the fights which are already not terribly difficult easier, and while there is a lot of great fluff, honestly it is a bit lacking in terms of actual substance gameplay wise. Despite this though, there is something just inexplicably fun about it all. The fights, the smashing stuff open, the running around clicking stuff...'tis just an enjoyable experience.

So yeah, that was my mini review I guess, despite having not finished it. I urge you to go and download the demo and give it a try, even if you are not a huge fan. I understand it is definitely not everyone's tastes, but ya never know, might just surprise yourself. :)

We lasted three, one of which was me ¬_¬

Motorstorm I played for 100+ hours. And then still occasionally saw things I'd never seen before. Things that drew a genuine "woah..." That shouldnt be possible in a racing game...

Excite Truck shows all it has in half an hour, and is dead by about 10. 10 hours is pretty damn good for a shooter, but poor for a racing game

Possibly, but it just looks so slow. Where's the "going so fast the scenery blurs"? Where's the "holy crap I'm 200 feet up in the air?" Where's the points for driving through trees?

I mean, look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzXQy9sLMeM&feature=related
And then this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzXQy9sLMeM&feature=related (with sound off for a fair comparison)
and then say which one feels more zany, more manic, more... exciting.

And I'm pretty sure I've spent a lot more than ten hours on it. I'd still be playing it now if I wasn't all "Damn you Canada Gold and Platinum in Super Excite Mode! Damn you to hell!!! All I want are two S-Ranks to unlock Mirror Mode and then I would play the game a whole bunch more, but noooooo, you won't let me have them, no matter how hard I try...".

Besides, I hate this trend of valuing a game's worth based on how long you can play it for. That's accountant speak (although I did mention how I'd played AWDS for over 200 hours in my review of it. But that's just to convince others to get it, because it's awesome, even if it is horribly broken at times and probably the weakest of the four AW games in terms of both gameplay and story. Actually, that may be a good reason not to trust how long I've played it for...).

Multiplayer's not much in Excite Truck, granted, but it's still a fantastic adrenalin rush in single player.

Screen blurs when you boost (seems reasonable), Its just not as... overdone as some games (Im looking at you, Burnout). And there are a few huge ramps in the game (maybe one on most tracks) but again, in moderation: they dont kill the entire rest of the track just to shoehorn in another long falling session.

Excite Truck is a glorious arcade racer. What the game lacks in content it more than makes up for in being completely ****ing awesome.

One does not stop playing excite truck after ten hour because you've 'seen everything the game has to offer'. No, you go back and s-rank that *****. Then you do it all over again in your favorite truck because damn the firefly is fun to drive.

in regards to the multiplayer, I've played 100s of hours of it. Find yourself a worthy opponent and the spartan split-screen mode will be all you need. Nothing beats launching yourself 100 feet in the ait, doing a 1080 then super truck smashing your opponent from above a stone's throw from the finish line.

I am wondering what Motorstorm 2 will be like, because I can't think of how the gameplay can change very much. I'm mostly expecting it to be a change in graphics, tracks and physics, just like in the Need for Speed series, than to make any fundamental change.

Ah, I found a non-torrent one. I'll wait until a Mod approves of it before sharing the link, as I don't know about this forum's policy towards sharing freeware stuff three days before it's released.

But it does kick ass! It's only got 25% of the items the full Creature Editor will, but it's still fun!
So far, I've created these two:

Sizes are a bit off: the second one is considerably smaller than the first.
Picking names is hard.

It also has an avatar maker, but the filesize is too big to use on this forum:

Oh wow, only my fourth creature in before I got that "They shouldn't have made me a god" feeling.
Behold, my latest creation:
http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/1668/hiboratustf4.png
Yes, it is fat. As in, really really fat! In fact, it's really just a spherical blob of fat! And I didn't even give it legs, so it can only move by waddling.
I've also got a rolling animation of it, just in case you were skeptical about how fat it really is...
http://img49.imageshack.us/img49/5631/sporegif20080614172936ey0.gif
Oh, but the best part is it's attack. It attacks by raising its arms in the air and just flopping on the enemy! And any body structure it once had instantly disappears, as it turns into an actual blob! And to top all that off, the smile of it's mouth changes too, leaving it with a facial expression that makes it look like it's in agonising pain! Every time! It's hilarious!

Oh, and the third creation was this:
http://img378.imageshack.us/img378/4104/dioargamuskn2.png
It reminds me of a catfish, only evolved to cope with being above water. And also much bigger.
When I started making this, my first intention was to make something really tall, much taller than this thing came out to be. A few things later and I had a basic shape like this. Then I attached the fin things while trying to think of a way to improve it, and that led to using the fish angle. What I'm getting at here is that it's actually really easy to come up with unique creatures, and it'll just come naturally!

I'm sorry, were you expecting something else?honestly, he has a point, PB. it's duke nukem. the only reason the series was popular was because it was a funny shooter back in the day when funny was the only thing required for a video game to be good. it was 3D and you could shoot stuff. that was new and interesting enough for that time. bring it into today's world and you've got a pretty standard shooter with nothing interesting to sell it.

I don't think he's criticizing that Duke Nukem is a generic sci-fi shooter, just that it took them forever to make a generic sci-fi shooter. But I'm still withholding judgement for the final release because every info 3D Realms shows is instantly outdated. (they claim that gameplay is 6 months old)

Though yeah, give how boring and insipid and stupidly serious every sci-fi shooter has been, I really don't care if DNF joins the pack as long as it stands out with its humorous and cheesy style and tries to liven the genre up.

I actually would like it somewhat if it went over the top and made fun of the genre a bit, and that's exactly what I expected Duke Nukem Forever to do, but all I saw in that video was a generic FPS with the main character mumbling to himself.

I kinda expected a gameplay video to show Duke, each hand wielding a minigun that shot missiles with chainsaws on them, shooting down armies of aliens that would each explode into gigantic clouds of gore and money, all the while smoking a cigar, making out with a stripper and shouting out witty phrases about how the aliens just had their asses handed to them... I've heard about that too, but it's not going to come even close to the number of Wiimotes sold. That's because, unlike the Wii, the PS3 wasn't exclusively made for that controller so games that do use it will be very, very rare.

the wiimote will likely influence the next gen of consoles. you aren't likely going to see even the next xbox without motion control. better get used to the idea now cause the idea is too good to pass up completely, for better or worse.
I don't know, the current PS3 motion sensor seems to get very little to no attention. I expect that Nintendo will still be the only ones to have a proper Wii-type console for a few generations, while the other two stick to the regular.
It's like with FPS games, instead of trying to add innovation, they all do the same stuff, and mabye add in some slightly innovative gimmick. Especially the weapons (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StandardFPSGuns), which is particularly bad for shotguns and flamethrowers, as the sitandard versions of these in video games are nothing like their real-life equivelents.

I can't speak for microsoft, but sony is a reasonably obvious convert and nintendo can't really go back on their best-selling anything ever, so they'll likely stay with motion control. I can see MS going either way, selling the normal controllers to keep traditional stubborn gamers how they want to play or going with motion controls to enable them to make more off of cross-platform games.

also, yeah, but I'm hoping that devs figure out how to make good games with motion controls after fiddling around a bit with it. the control is there and it's accurate enough to make at least SOME interesting games, just devs so far are crap about it.

edit: and this fact is both a for and against argument for the motion controls. adding to my indecision regarding MS's most likely move.

Yes, motion sensors on a football game apparently has the potential (and is already factual) to improve the depth of the game, add complexity to the things you can do offering overall a better playability.

That's a step forward. However I'm still against have no alternatives to motion sensors, until I'm proven wrong, I don't see how it wouldn't make games like Metal Gear or Final Fantasy worser or simpler.

After the first trailer for that, I was hoping that they were just holding out on showing some non-running segments in order to focus on the fast stuff, but that longer trailer makes it look like that's... it.

Is the game going to be nothing but a movie of Sonic running really fast everywhere, occasionally making you press a button to give the illusion of control?

Sheeze lawheeze, the original games were platformers, not adrenaline-pumping racers. Everyone, even the fans, seems to forget this.
The main reason the recent games are so crappy is because the platforming is bad, enemies provide no challenge unless they're unbearably cheap, the story takes itself far too seriously for a game that's about talking animals searching for gems, and worst of all, the levels are unmemorable and boring.

The levels in the original Sonic games were huge (I can't believe the number of branching paths in Marble Gardens), yet they still provide a player with unique experiences throughout. The levels didn't make you go through the same mechanic more than once or twice before putting a new twist on it. It was constantly challenging the player. "Here's a rolling spiked ball! Here's a rolling spiked ball and a big orange crushing platform that we introduced earlier in the level!"

The new games make the player do the same damn thing not only throughout a level, but throughout the game. "Here's a rail! Here's another rail! Here's a level that's nothing but rails!"

I know what you mean. This constant drive to make the games absurdly fast gets on my nerves. The faster I'm going, the harder it is to see what's coming up. The Mega Drive games (and the first Sonic Advance too, although that may have gone too far the other way) understood this and tried to provide balance between the sections where you could run as fast as you liked and more normal platforming. The thing about having him going fast all the time is that there's no middle ground: everything either tends to be "I could do this in my sleep" or "Holy cow, bottomless pits everywhere".

There are one or two pleasant exceptions to this: the Huge Crisis level from Sonic Rush controls this balance pretty well, providing a constant level of threat and pressure without descending into frustration (even then, it relies on the rather unnatural concept of the "enemy room" to break play down into speed and non-speed. The old games didn't have to do that, mumble grumble).

super_frea

In the original sonic games, whilst there were some small sections where you could for example, hold the right button, these were very short and would usually be disrupted by spikes or badniks that would come and **** you in your face no matter what speed you were running at. Keeping you on your toes. This trailer here makes it seem that if you run fast enough you can take out enemies just by running at them. If it is as Pigbuster suggested entirely speed based then surely that would render any enemies entirely obsolete? In the sense that you can simply batter them out the way by running, really, really fast.

The levels in the original Sonic games were huge

They were it's true. Every 3D sonic game level I've played has only had one path, giving me no reason to play through again. Not only that but these single paths were frightfully dull. It was simply run. jump run, run, run, jump, jump on someone's head, jump, run, run.To be quite honest I don't think I'm ever going to like the 3-D Sonic games because they don't have the charm or the originality of the originals.

ALSO, they've introduced a ridiculous amount of new characters. Cream, Big The Cat, Silver, that bird thing from Sonic Riders, Blaze The Cat. I really don't like that. They should have stuck with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman in my opinion.

...and Cream can go die.

Also I liked Sonic Rush as a whole. The boost thing was cool and the way you had to do tricks in the air to get your boost back was, well interesting anyway. So If they've got that in Sonic Unleashed then I'm hoping that'll be a really good thing.

There's no way they'd be able to have more modern games without interesting characters! A change in times meant that games generally needed a proper story and character interactions to be good, and just having four guys wouldn't work.
Case in point: there were a lot of complaints in Sonic Heroes about Team Sonic's story and characters not having substance. Including some from Paul.

Whoa, finally a new age sonic game where he can actually run FAST.

You can't say that in order to make modern games they need more characters. Yes they need interesting characters, but as far as I'm concerned none of the new characters are interesting. They should spend more time developing the characters they've got rather than thinking "Right sod Sonic, Knuckles etc, I've grown tired of them and they don't have much of a personaility. Let's just make a new EXTREME character like Shadow and Memphiles" or whatever his name is.

Silver is a very good example. He's not interesting and doesn't have a personality at all. Apparently "Although seemingly serious in nature, an interview states that Silver is somewhat immature. During cutscenes in Sonic the Hedgehog Blaze mentions that Silver is naïve several times, and also states that "He gets insecure when he's alone"" So he's seemingly serious, yet immature and insecure? Wonderful.

On contrast we have Sonic the extreme hero, Tails the young, somewhat dopey, friendly sidekick, Knuckles the hot headed, muscular guy and the villain Eggman.

Shadow is Snake, Mephiles is Liquid, Silver is PHYSICS ENGINE, Blaze is FROM THE FUTURE, Tails is a kid, Knuckles is a patsy, Sonic is EXTREME, Cream is a new dansel in distress, Amy is a schoolgirl, Big is Homer, etc.

Well, I agree that a lot has been taken away from the Sonic genre. I do miss the days of my Megadrive.

Also, I wish they'd used the lock on cartridge thing they did with S&K more often, or had developed it. Plugging an old game into a new one to use a character from the new one in the old one rocked solid awesomes.

if you're somewhat like emo just less pathetic and such that makes you either goth or punk. if you're not happy with either of those then figure something else out to call yourselves. emo has already been claimed by the likes of simple plan *cringes at having to utter the name*

Christ that's wrong :p

Emo = music scene that evolved out of hardcore punk in the 80s, originating in DC.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=a5anwOSCuNc - THAT is emo.

You have to remember, the majority are idiots. They give new things labels, despite being almost entirely unrelated to what the genre originally was.

Another example, to a lesser extent, would be glam. Loads of people think glam is stuff like Motley Crue and bollocks, when it's not. Glam is stuff like Slade and T-Rex.

Anyway, to drag this back on topic -

Well the fact is that is what is commonly associated with emos today. At the end of the 1990s, the underground emo scene had almost entirely disappeared. However, the term emo was still being bandied about in mainstream media.

The general understanding of what an emo is now, is much different to what it use to be.

You have to remember, the majority are idiots. They give new things labels, despite being almost entirely unrelated to what the genre originally was.entirely irrelevant. a word doesn't mean something just because of what it originally meant. the term "gank" in an MMORPG was a combination of the words Gang and Kill. to "gank" meant that you took a large group of people to kill a small group of other people or a single person. what it means NOW is to kill someone in an unfair manner using cheap tricks of some variety.

I don't CARE what emo used to mean. it's irrelevant now. emo now means people who go around wearing black make up and black clothes cutting themselves and acting like the world is the most depressing thing ever. that is what an emo is now. it's common knowledge. you can argue about what it USED to be all you want, but that's not how it is anymore. if you disagree, you're wrong. it's that simple. if you don't believe me, then google it, go to wikipedia, or find any other method of searching for the meaning of the term.

also, I absolutely hate everyone who owns an xbox 360 for being able ot play banjo kazooie....I sincerely hope it sucks rabid goat balls :p

It looks a whole lot more cartoonish. In the original games, she looked more like a regular bird with a humanish personality, while in this one she's got a really long twig neck, a humanoid face, and four long feathers on her head that makes the rest of her look bald.
