When Amy turned me down when I was about 18, her two main reasons were the fact that we'd be a long way apart if I got into Cambridge, and that she'd be the sort of wild spirit who'd drag me down and mess my academic career up too much. Since she then fell in love with someone who lives in Vienna and my academic performances went in the toilet at Cambridge anyway, I can't help feeling somewhat miffed. The best one I ever heard was a couple of months ago. I went out with a friend of mine just after his exams ended, and me, a mutual friend of ours, his girlfriend, and her friend Naomi (if you follow) got ahead of the group (as they were on the slowest pub crawl yet recorded) and we were sat in the Original Oak in Headingley talking. I was liking Naomi more and more, and eventually we left and went on somewhere else. I had to go home so I took the opportunity to ask her out.

"Also I'm moving to Italy."

I would have thought she'd have mentioned that sooner. If I was out with friends and also moving to Italy I think I would have at least hinted at it.

The problem is that I've only seen one side of the story but went right on talking anyway. If had a greater knowledge of what this person is like, I could offer a more substantial view of the matter. All that I know about is what happened before, and I am basing my response on that.

Because Zero hasn't given me a great deal of information about the subject, aside from the "we're trying to work it out" thing, for all I know she could be lying through her teeth. If she did it before, why wouldn't she do it again?–such is my train of thought. That's really my biggest frustration: I haven't heard enough to truly know what's going on.

I'm genuinely worried that BitTorrent has dropped the two torrents of The Thief and the Cobbler and the 3rd Digimon season for no reason whatsoever.
The files and folders are all still there, right where the were at the beginning. They aren't complete, but BitTorrent doesn't seem to like reading them anymore.
Also, I can play back the things that are fully completed, which I'm not supposed to be able to do until the download is finished, which BitTorrent seems to think that it is.
And they've both been going for a number of months now.
DAMMIT.
I hope it gets back into gear tomorrow, but I'm not too optimistic.

I'm going to be taking physics next year.
I'm actually not that bad at science, but there are some things that make my grade go down. (I took chem last year, I'm taking physics next year)

1) I'm not very good at learning from textbooks. There were multiple times when I tried to read a chapter and I just couldn't understand it at all, and my teacher would then give us a lecture on the day before the test, and I'd understand a lot better. I learn a lot better from lectures than from other things.

2) The teacher I just talked about had a liver problem during the last half of the school year, and we got no one but substitutes to take her place. Many of them just assigned the work without telling us much about the subject, and since I don't learn well from textbooks, I was screwed. It's a good thing that we had the chance to take a credit/no credit, as I had an A, but I think it went down to a D.

I have now not ONE, but TWO songs that have come up my dreams that I loved, but forgot when I woke up. The one I had a week back, which was some sort of boat/city fanfare, I DID remember quite well, but I focused on writing down the rest of the visual stuff in the dream, that I forgot the song by the time I was done.

The one I had last night was some kind of orchestral piece, that may actually be real. I got a bit of the song down immediately, but that was the finale of the piece. I can't remember the beginning or the middle, nothing.

It's really depressing. I loved both of the tunes, but they were in my dreams... and I can hardly ever pull stuff back from my subconscious. It makes me feel hopeless. I'm telling myself every night 'I want to hear that song again in my dream tonight", so I'm hoping that if I do that long enough, they'll both come back.

It's normal to feel like that, Zeor. It's the loss of any kind of potential relationship but you just have to let go regardless of how you feel right now. You're not in the right state of mind to immediately reconsider reversing your decision. After a few months you'll have gotten over it completely. I speak from experience.

Buster, leaving you to copy down information from text books is not teaching, it's an excuse for the teacher to do a crossword and drink coffee. Learning is something that I think requires more than just reading; practice and association with different experiences and senses is key to successful retention. The quality of your education is very important and if you think you aren't receiving decent quality teaching you should complain. If you do, they'll likely come back at you with short staff levels and illness as their reasons so you should be prepared with evidence.

A Uni friend of mine who's doing his PhD lost his Chemistry supervisor during last term. He was only thirty-odd, and they were very good friends. So although I don't know what it's like, I have second-hand experience of it...

My maths teacher died of cancer a few years ago. Such a shame, she was a great teacher - The first person at our school to get straight As at A levels.

I find the best way is to get a bit of tissue just wet enough that it doesn't sting your eye, and nudge the lash to the corner of your eye. When it can't go any further it bend up off hte eyeball and you can grab it. It did for me, anyway. I'm not promising anything.

I have to go to bed now to go to work in the morning, but I was away all day and really want to catch up on everything I could have been doing during the day. Also, I don't want to go to work in the morning, especially because I have to use earplugs and a face mask while I blow compressed air at the insides of really dusty student workstations at the University Of Waterloo (where I work). It stuffs up my nose despite the facial mask, and gets in my eyes and all over the lab where I have to do it. My headphones broke last Thursday in the middle of the day, so I couldn't listen to any more music for the rest of the day, and cleaning computers with a super-loud air compressor is an insanely dull and bleak job, especially with no music. Now, I don't have any headphones to go to work with tomorrow, so it'll be bleak and horrible all day. I don't care about proper order-of-thought or paragraphing for this post.

Bah. I wish I could get back to more interesting computer work. Cleaning them with compressed air is not my idea of a computer job, though I suppose it still has to be done.

Pretty much all because of age. I am covered untill I graduated highschool under my parents heath care provider. However if I go to collage the I still am covered, but I guess I took to long getting ready for collage...and we received the notice that I am no longer eligable. Which sucks. I've been having back/neck pains alot...and who knows when somthing could happen.
I currently have $100 or so to my name. yet I have bills that have to be paid...and I get a paycheck every two weeks. That makes it more difficalt to save money for things I need. And to add to that probelm I'm only getting one or so days on the schedual to work.

Some lanky druggy stole an inverter from our shop today. I saw him stuff it up his jumper so I informed my assistant manager. We followed him around but we didn't confront him before he left. "Why?" You might remember the mention of the online entity Pi a good few pages ago in either of these infernal threads, or maybe a different one, but anyway, she's coming up again, because I can't get her out of my head for like the third time. Even though I barely ever talk to her. Ugh.

We actually had a rare chance to talk for a few hours last night and catch up on things and discuss life in general. I guess most of this part can be skipped, but towards the end, she said she considered me a strong person. This, somehow, is the single most encouraging and empowering thing I have been told in a very, very long time. I sat there with tears standing in my eyes because I couldn't believe somebody -- let alone she in specific -- thought that about me. And it's inspired me. I still don't feel like I'm very strong, but when I remember her saying that to me, it makes me want to be. It helps me try to become what I've always wanted to be. I've been trying harder to keep my chin up and my chest out, to put in that extra step, to smile more often... etc.

Why is this going in the negative events thread, you ask? Well, I just broke up with Avry because I was sick of the distance, and now I've gone head over heels for someone else with probably more distance. Damn it to HELL.

She'll be moving to Virginia (bordering Pennsylvania on the South, a drive of a good few hours, but nothing horrible) for college later this week, and she directly invited me to drop by and visit her for a weekend some time. Needless to say, the thought sends my head into the clouds, but there again, I'm conflicted because I always expected Avry to come see me.

But I suppose that boils down to that I just really didn't / don't feel much for Avry anymore.

Well, the Federal Elections Tribunal did a recount of some percentage of the votes(I think it was 10%... not paying much attention...) and the recount ended pretty much the same. Now Lopez Obrador is threatening on staying there forever.
Also, several restaurants in the area where the manifestation is being made are reported to be closing down soon because of a lack of customers, and some plays in the area's theaters are also ending seasons earlier.

Couple more little annoying body gripes: I have a really bad sore under my upper lip, and I knocked a nice little divot out of at least one layer of skin on the end of my left thumb at work today. With a screwdriver.

I got ***ed. This woman called in to change a new phone she had purchased over the phone, she didn't like it after all and wanted a different model. She was still in the 30 day exchange period which ended tomorrow, so I sent her a return kit so she could return her device and then attempted a warm transfer to Telesales to get a new one. Warm transfer means explaining stuff to the person you are transfering to before you hit the transfer button.
So there I was explaining, and the woman who answered me tells me that they can't send a new device if the customer hasn't returned the other one first. I explained that given I had just sent the return kit, it would take 3 days for the customer to receive it so by the time she sent it back she would no longer be in the 30 day exchange period, so I asked if something could be done about this. She puts me on hold for a couple of minutes and then gives me a phone number where I could get help with this issue. The number seemed oddly familiar but I still wrote it down and ended that call.
Then right as I was going to dial the number she gave me, I noticed that the number she gave me was... customer service... and I am customer service...

No, banana peppers are pickled pepperoncinis (I think), and the form one usually eats them on a sandwich is when they have been cut up into small slices. You can buy them at a grocery store and they come in several different colours in the same jar: yellow, red, and green. They don't taste much like jalepeño peppers, but they're quite delicious! They are slightly spicy. Some people would say they're very spicy, but I wouldn't say so.

I know it sounds whack but the more you share your feelings with each other, the deeper and stronger your bond will be. The deeper and stronger your bond, the more stable the relationship.

I am sure I have heard of hormone-supressing pills. They are more common for females, however I have once read about a similar drug which causes spermatozoids to not grow a tail, and thus making it impossible for them to get to the ovary. Not sure about their price/availability, but I heard they are quite fail-proof if administered correctly (although administration must start around a week before any actual, err, contact). Either way, just go to your local pharmacy and ask the guys there, or ask a qualified doctor.

Ya know, I know I said I was just about done with my problems in this thread... but I 'ought to let you guys know how everything is getting wrapped up here.
One out of the two care takers that watch my father has become too sick to watch him. She has quit, and will be offically done after October. The other one's husband has just died not to long ago, he was also a good friend of mine, and cannot expect to come over here from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm every day...6 days a week to watch my father. (If we would get diffrent caregivers that we didn't know, they would just rob us blind, like the ones before these.) Even though I have requested every Tuesday and Thursday off work, I still don't think that would work. Because of collage comming up and well...basically life and general. I'm being forced to make the fun choice of watching my father or living life. Even though it's pretty safe to say that I couldn't really watch him, no one thinks it should be my responsabilty. I don't care what anyone says, there is a moutain of guilt there. But basically what is going to happen is that he will be put into a nursing home. Where his wife and son might drop by to visit for a while, depending on theyre busy scheduals, as he kind of just sits there and waits to die. Thats ****ed up. Majorly. I don't wish that on any person, ever, yet it's happening to my father. But with him gone, there goes the care givers, and someone to kinda keep an eye on the dogs. Who knows what may happen. If worst comes to worst we might have to sell the dogs or somthing jacked up like that. I doubt it...but who knows.

My Mum's in a similar situation. Well, I say "similar" - it's nowhere near as epic as the problems your Dad is having. But she's diabetic, it's quite bad, and she can't really do much - some of you may know about the surgery she had last year. She's requested home help and been declined on several occasions, so it basically falls on my sister to take care of my Mum, which isn't fair. I moved out before Mum's diabetes got worse - that makes me sound bad, I know, but we didn't know what would happen... would happen. I go over to Mum's every now and then to help out but sometimes she just breaks down while I'm there and it's very difficult to hold her together and convince her that everything will be okay. She's so low right now...

I know we're not in the exact same boat, but they're pretty similar - made by the same manufacturers at least. I can't imagine for one second that your father would be happier at home with the constant care and attention of someone who loves him but doesn't want to be there all day than he would in a home with professional care and that same person coming by every week to tell him about the great life he's leading despite everything.

At least that way he could live vicariously.

Well, the morning wasn't that good...but could the day get better today?
I had plans later that day to go see a girl that I had liked and had told me this over the phone : "Yeah I would like to hang out like we planed, but I'm kinda hanging out with my boyfriend. Could we do it another time." Why was that so bad? Because a month ago she had told me when I attmepted to ask her out: "I see you only as a really good friend and nothing more. And it's not that I don't want to date you, it's just that I don't want to get into a relationship for a while."

Then I'm just hanging out with a good friend of mine, trying to forget about the day when I run into another girl who I had worked with at Target. I had always liked her, and I always felt there was somthing mutual. She was up there to get a job app. I was just feeling better and I was in the mood to get in a nice conversation when non other than her newly to be engaged main squeeze walked up. Well that put a damper on things, especially when they started making out infront of me on the spot.
And when I thought the day couldn't get worse than that, down to -3 for me.
Not that there is anything wrong with the people and what they did. It's just been not fun on my part.
That was yesterday, and today I found that yet another girl who didn't want to get into a relationship with me has another boyfriend.

Probably the only thing that makes solitude so difficult is when it seems like everyone around you is happily coupled up. Seriously, everyone in my workplace has a significant other. Of course then I also get to thinking about, for example, the two (or more) guys on the Something Awful forums who are in their late forties and have never had a girlfriend. On the one hand, schadenfreude; no matter how bad you are at something there's always somebody worse. On the other hand, I can just imagine I'll be in the exact same damn situation 30 years from now. And frankly that scares me.

That sucks Slick. I usually only make it as far as having people (stupidly) telling me "you'll have no trouble getting a girl" or "everyone eventually finds someone".

Closing down not just Credit Control's best call-centre, but what has been voted the company's best and top-performing call-centre, will probably not improve the customer experience.
Nor will handing over our duties to an inexperienced group of idiots who, even now, are calling us for help and advice.
And I'm quite sure having fewer people able to answer the phones isn't an improvement, either.

Let me tell you a story about a private school. That school is De La Salle, and they are the white building at the bottom of that picture.
The private, christian school lived HAPPILY with the islanders.
Well, maybe not too much.
They wanted to EXPAND.

And so that building got larger and larger as they took more island space for themselves. Now, the map shows the size of the school currently.

Now, the De La Salleans suddenly realised, THEY WERE OUT OF ROOM.
But unfortunately, all they had was a football practice field, not a genuine stadium, and there was no place to put it!
GOD FORBID the high school children have to go play their dumbass game on a stadium THAT ISN'T REALLY THEIRS. They have to "borrow" another schools.

But that wasn't good enough. "WE WANT A STADIUM, DAMMIT. THE GREAT LORD GOD-JESUS WANTS HIS CHILDREN TO HAVE SOME ALL-AMERICAN FOOTBALL ON A GODDAMNED HOME STADIUM."

Quite some time ago, the islanders created a new bridge over the train tracks, and they also created Grove street (the road right in the center of the map.)

What a street it was! Though narrow, it created another route across the island, which is rather essential.
Not to mention that if there was ever a train, all the islanders would have to do is drive up it and over the bridge!

But back to the current day, the De La Salleans suddenly had an idea.
"RIGHT THERE! RIGHT THERE IS WHERE WE'LL BUILD OUR BIG USELESS PIECE OF CRAP!"
They had decided on a place for their piece of crap (also known as a "staydiuhm"), RIGHT ACROSS GROVE STREET!

But oh, the islanders didn't like this! For one thing, the loss of grove street!

For another thing, the planned stadium would have many seats, tall bright lights, and loud speaker systems, and all less than a block away from one of the islander's windows!

And for another thing, and the biggest thing of all, would be the HANDING OVER OF ****ING PUBLIC PARK LAND TO A ****ING PRIVATE SCHOOL. PUBLIC. PRIVATE. ANTONYMS. THEY CANNOT BE INTERCHANGED, CITY COUNCIL.

The islanders rejected the idea! So what would De La Salle do?
Why, what any good natured, true Christian would do!

SMEAR THE HELL OUT OF THEM.

Since De La Salle had many connections everywhere (The newspapers, the park board, the fire department, the city council, every god-damned place in Minneapolis...) they were able to do many things!

They just plain insulted us in the local paper (Including trying to make it look like we are bat-**** insane rather than eccentric. Personally, I ****ing love how our neighbors have a chicken farm. That is awesome, so shut the hell up and report on news instead of a hate-story. Oh, and he said that all of our houses should be bulldozed into the river I ALMOST FORGOT. :( )

They formed counter protests! The islanders had a party is support of Grove street, and it was a rather nice affair, with folk music and the like.
But De La Salle wouldn't have that, NO. They made their OWN protest a block away, with cardboard signs, and a band and drunken dumbassery. One guy yelled at one of my neighbors, who is black, "WE'RE DOING THIS FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU!"
They spread the rumor that the we're racist, you see.

Oh right, THEY SPREAD RUMORS!
The aforementioned RACIST.
The "rich snobs", showing that they don't know how a co-op works (The island has both rich and middle-lower class people, I am of the latter.)
The worst of them all, SQUATTERS. They spread the rumor that we never pay taxes, and boy did that imbed itself into people's minds. We've always paid taxes. Ironically, De La Salle tries to dodge taxes itself, I think.

Well, what else to say, really? The stupid park board has approved it today, and now that nice field will be replaced with their "FIELD OFF DREEMS LOL".

Well, actually, we're going to sue them for the public-to-private land thing, and that might be held up in court for a while, but the idea of our last shot being entirely in the hands of just one judge isn't appealing.
He'll probably be a De La Salle graduate.

After being assured our jobs were not being outsourced to India, we started receiving calls from "NTL India" askign us to take payments they're not authorised to take. This started about a month or so ago. We get calls like this:

Me: "Hi, you're through to NTL Credit Control, my name's Ben. Can I take your account number, please?"
Guy: "Hello? This is Parvinder calling from NTL India? I have a customer on the line who wants to make a payment?"

(Note that these aren't questions - for some reason the Indian call centre staff seem to think that you're supposed to end every sentence by going up an octave with your voice.)

Me: "Okay, what's the account number?"
Parv: "It's 7? 5? 4? 3? 2? 9? 9? 1?"
Me: "Er... that's too short to be an Acco-"
Parv: "2?
Me: "Ah, there we go."
Parv: "Yes, it is Mr Dupree on the line? He's passed DPA and he wants to set up a Payment Plan?"
Me: "Right. Firstly it's his wife's account and there's no password so he couldn't have passed DPA. Secondly, even if he could have, he needs to speak to Churn [special side of Credit Control for customers who have over 60 days of outstanding bills]. His wife will need to call in and speak to Churn. Shall I give you the number?"
Parv: "Okay, shall I put him through?"
Me: "Well, no, because I can't help hi--"
Parv: "Okay I'm putting him through now? Thanks for calling NTL?"
Me: "I can't help the guy, it's not--"
Mr Dupree: "'Ello?"
Me: "Ah, Hello Mr Dupree. Is your wife available?"
Mr Dupree: "No, she's onna loo. I wanna sort out this bill."
Me: "Right, because the account's in her name we would need to discuss it with her. She'll need to speak to the Specialist side of Credit Control. Can I give you their number for her to call them?"
Mr Dupree: "Nah, just put me through, I'll 'ave a word wiv'm."
Me: "I'm afraid they won't be able to discuss the account with you."
Mr Dupree: "Why not?"
Me: "Well, it's your wife's account. Due to the Data Protection Act we can't discuss the account with you without her authorisation."
Mr Dupree: "You wot? We've been married for 3 months, mate. Stick your f**kin' Supervisor on."

Yes. We get loads of these. I nearly walked out of work last week because every call I had was like this.

Well, there's (fewscarce) rumours going on, but nothing close to certain. But's that's how things start, isn't it? :-/

And Pigbuster, I feel your pain too, altough it was the goverment deciding to run a elevated metro system trough the middle of an avenue that runs next to my neighborhood, instead of doing it underground, with pathetic, unrealistic, unproven excuses, and an obvious case of OBVIOUS benefit from a relative to the governor who happens to run a company that just happened to have recently bought this thing that is particularly useful for building large pilars.
Also while several other construction/architectural companies that were running for the job had pretty much concluded that building a metro system, either underground or elevated, wouldn't really solve anything, also stating a better, cheaper idea would be to reinforce the bus system...
Oh and did I mention releasing a bunch of cheesy commercials to make people think "we"(people on strike) were causing "them"(people watching the ad) to waste their taxes because we wouldn't let their awesome project to be worked on?
Also worth mentioning: several people made a camping strike right at the point where the avenue gets to my neighbourhood for about a month. At one point the goverment stated they would agree to have another talk with them later that week, to try to reach a common ground(read:get them to accept the elevated system), then the next day after the announcement, around 4 AM[also worth noting, they let the media know before so they had enough time to get there with their cameras to capture the whole thing and print it all over the first page/early broadcast in that day's news] suddenly flooding the place with over 100 heavily armed cops (read: the people who stayed overnight in the camp were like... 7? Obviously unnarmed too, and mostly composed of old ladies) to have them removed by force, and everything they had set up there( A nice tent, fridge, stove, microwave, tv, etc) being thrown around and eventually crammed into containers, that they left in some grass area in the avenue(as some sort of trophee, also left unprotected against rain or anything that could have obviously damaged the stuff) with cops watching over it for a couple of months till the juridical process was settled before it could be given back.
Then the company that was in charge of the project tried to sue the "whiners"(they actually referred like that to the people on strike in local newspapers) to get them to pay some ungodly millions of moneys they suposedly lost trough the whole month. Actually threatened to take their houses away from them etc.(can't recall what happened with that)

Oh and don't get me started on the Forum of Cultures or whatever it's called that is being hosted in my city next year. All courtesy of the great governor Natividad Gonzalez Paras, which is the same hero that brought us the elevated metro system.

Oh and the giant mexican flag that cost about $100000 US that sits there in a hill that has no real purpose and was only built because some primary school kid suggested it in a letter to the president because he tought a giant flag is something to be proud of. And the thing has ripped, gotten stuck in funny ways and lost colour countless times.

Oh, oh, and the stupid string based or whatever you call it bridge that was built across a almost always dead river(only lives to it's name around September), that was stupidly expensive because the governor at the time (Fernando Canales) wanted to make something to be representative of the city(architecturally speaking) that wasn't necessary at all and could have been made a lot less expensive with a regular design(that was really what the river required).

There was a huge one built in Alaska a while ago that, IIRC, wasted a ton of money to connect to a remote island with only a couple people on it.
It's called the "Bridge to nowhere" by the locals.

Yeah, I was really freaking stupid to let my hopes get that high over the whole Pi thing. I took it fairly gracefully at the moment because I was not alone in the room, but the emotions I set aside then are kind of gradually resurfacing. I'm back at square one once more, more or less. That edge of having the motivation to improve myself as a person is lost, along with most of my general energy, it seems. I've gone back to feeling like life is knee-high mud I'm stuck slogging through. When I let the rest of my life go like this, it just feels like my damnable job swallows me back up again.

I've only spoken with her -- on AIM -- once since. I usually lose my nerve every time I try to.

How could a program crashing ruin your keyboard?
I mean, I'm not doubting you, but why would it do that?

I once crashed my PC by unplugging a pair of headphones.

Windows is weird, and crashes if a slight breeze blows on it.

I've had problems with Macs, such as random kernal errors occasionally and my parents' iMac is on the fritz since we never ran some sort of reparation CD that we're supposed to use every month, but ruining a keyboard... that's just weird.

If my Zen's Removeable Disk function worked on Kubuntu, I'd never log into a Windows machine in college if I could help it.

The general media hotkeys on my keyboard, including a handy volume control knob, just stopped functioning at one point after a fairly nasty crash.

Another time my graphics card drivers got completely corrupted and wouldn't uninstall, or reinstall (because they were already installed). That was fun.

While we're on the subject of computers, one of the lads on my floor in uni halls was having problems getting his brand new out-of-the-box-last-week Dell Inspiron laptop to connect to the uni network. In the network setup prefs, it was saying that there was no ethernet cable connected to the card even when there was. The wall socket and cable were working fine on my PowerBook, so that wasn't the problem.

In the end, we called computing services and they sent a techhy over (who also owned a PowerBook :D). We realised that there was a fault with the card - enabled in BIOS, Windows thought it was enabled, but the Broadcom controller was saying it wasn't. Tried reinstalling the drivers and all that nonsense, but nothign worked.

Eventually, we found out that the network socket wasn't making a good connection with the motherboard - to get it to work, you have to pull the cable upwards in the socket :confused:. Also, his PCI (or whatever its called) card socket is bent, so you can't get any cards in.

Brand new computer - almost totally useless!


And for the record, I've never had a single kernel panic on my PowerBook - I've had it for about 14 months
