I'm thinking I didn't have swine flu now. I had all the symptoms except for vomiting, but now I'm fine (except for a cough). The online system said I had swine flu and should take antiviral drugs.

correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the symptoms of swine flu pretty much the same for any major illness up until the point where the last symptoms kick in and you have one extra beyond normal flu/cold/whatever illness?

right, but not that often these days. I've heard a fair number of swine flu deaths.

Only because people make a fuss over it.
The majority of swine flu victims experience very mild symptoms. It's only a small minority it kills.
More die from seasonal flu each year than have from swine flu I think.*

Basically, you either suffer marginally or die.

of course it may just be a side effect of the general panic surrounding the disease.

In the earlier days of the outbreak, some suggested it could cause a cytokine storm, that's were your immune system basically goes crazy and kills you. Hence those with a stronger immune system would be more likely to die.

But the younger people who I have heard of who died have usually had medical problems or something. Similar people probably die from typical flu, but nobody gives a damn.

That's exactly what it is. Regular flu simply isn't newsworthy. I don't know which flu is killing more these days, but I imagine older strains of flu find it harder to spread as people develop immunity.

I'm hearing about how flu vaccines have a corporate agenda behind them, so the media has reasons for trying to make us panic. One interesting thing is that flu vaccines are supposedly less effective in unhealthy people, ie. the people who are likely to die from flu. The main reason for a healthy person to get a flu shot is to stop the spread of the virus rather than to protect their own life.

We're told to stay clear of hospitals and doctors if we have the flu (unless it's serious).

Walking into hospital with a contagious disease they can do nothing about is going to do wonders for already poorly patients.

For the benefit of getting some advert-free channels (BBC channels), we have to pay stupidly high sums of money to a waste-of-time government corporation that will then spend most of that money sending threatening letters to students who don't have TVs trying to scare them into buying a TV license.

Just write them a letter saying that you don't own a TV, radio or watch iPlayer.

Or just be polite and inform them. You know, spend 2 minutes to stop them wasting the money you keep complaining they waste, instead of being unhelpful and as such, assisting with the wasteful spending.

Seriously, the BBC is world renowned for it's quality. If you really don't own a TV, just let them know and it's okay. If you do, stop feeling entitled to TV (it's not a right) and pay up.

iPlayer's fine as long as you don't watch the live stuff. I also believe you don't need a license if you just listen to the radio.

Or just be polite and inform them. You know, spend 2 minutes to stop them wasting the money you keep complaining they waste, instead of being unhelpful and as such, assisting with the wasteful spending.

After less than a year, they start sending the letters again telling you that you're watching TV illegally. The letters they send (and I've had many after living in uni halls for the last four years, without a TV, and only watching non-live transmissions on iPlayer) basically say you're guilty until proven innocent and are usually of a very aggressive tone, and get more aggressive as the academic year progresses. And involve phoning a 45p/min number (if I remember rightly) to attempt to get yourself listed as not having a telly.

The thing I hate about the TV license is that they don't do a discounted rate for students living in halls of residence, where each room has to have an individual TV license, whereas a shared house with 5+ students living in it can get by with just one.

For the record, I don't mind the TV license, I just dislike the way they bully students into buying one when they most likely don't need one.

I had a TV but I never watched it, so I had to lie to them about me not having one. I'm not paying a license to play on my PS2 and GameCube..

I had been sharing the place with some classmates and one of them, David, had just moved out, so I told them it was his TV. Totally not expecting them to call me up one morning and ask for contact details so they could move the license to him :p
But I mentioned he moved back to his parents so they gave up!

Oh, the drama!

One of our employees(name's Heriberto), who has been working here for over 10 years now, has apparently been stealing from us for the past couple of months.

The guy has never been much of a model employee. He's always been rather reluctant to do his work, often giving a stink eye when asked to do something. It doesn't help that my grandfather and aunts are extremely short tempered people. His relationship with them for almost the entirety of his employment has consisted of getting shouted at, sometimes even for rather petty reasons.

In the past two years tho, this has rather changed. After my aunt died from cancer, my other two aunts hired a salesman. Given he's an excellent salesman this has considerably increased our workload(and income). My brother and I also started working here about the same time, and all this has contributed to change our relationship with our employees. Earlier this year, we realized we needed someone to take care of weighing outgoing merchandise. This was previously done by whoever was in the cash register(either one of my aunts, me or my brother), but with the increased workload it usually led to mistakes because it was difficult handling transactions with customers while keeping track of outgoing merchandise. So we started trusting Heriberto with this task. And he had been doing a pretty good job at it. But yesterday, one of our temp workers(Saul, a guy we hire on a per-day basis depending on how much merchandise we receive) told us that Heriberto sent him to deliver merchandise to someone we haven't sold anything before without writing it down, and later in the day saw him go over there to charge for this merchandise(he told us this because he thought it was fishy and didn't want to get involved in any problems).

Heriberto took a day off today, so we sent Saul over to the place he delivered the merchandise two days ago to charge for the merchandise "in behalf of Heriberto". Meanwhile, our salesman was there pretending to be a customer and recorded the conversation. The guy who received the merchandise said he would pay later because he still hadn't received full payment for it. Our salesman jumped in at that point and started interrogating the guy. Apparently, Heriberto has sent him merchandise at least in other four occasions. Another of our employees also confirmed Heriberto has been doing fishy stuff for a while even with other regular customers.

Needless to say, we're letting him go tomorrow. Problem is, we also employ his brother and his father(who is nearly retired. They both have been employed here longer than Heriberto), who will most likely make a fuss about this. My aunt wants to just fire all three of them. Whole thing is just a shame, really.

So I've been noticing that one of my harddrives has been acting up over the last two months, give or take some time, and I suspected it to be my windows disk because my OS would freeze randomly and when Photoshop does it's cache dump all programs lock up for a long time. Then the other day I got bluescreens whenever I tried to boot Windows 7, but my Vista still worked which is on the same drive. So, I bought a new harddrive yesterday to replace it before it completely breaks down. I backed up all my stuff to another drive, took it out and replaced it. All done, I plug in the power cord to my PC again and the power supply dies! Awesome timing! So now I gotta go buy a new one. :(

Xinos
11 Dec 2009, 23:07
Well the new PSU seems to work. Though when the computer is supposed to restart it makes a BLIPP sound just as it shuts off and doesn't boot again, so I need to press the power button. Not sure if that has anything to do with the new problem, which is that my computer now overheats and reaches 90 degrees C. Wooho! I had to remove the heatsink to swap the PSU's and I think that ruined the thermal paste. Patches of it was stuck on the heatsink and some on the CPU (it was already applied to the heatsink when I bought it, so it was probably not very good). At least now I don't blame the new PSU anymore for 'randomly' shutting off the computer.

Tomorrow I'll have to buy some of that stuff then, and I'm also gonna check my eyesight because my glasses are crap (these glasses, they do nothing!).
It's gonna be awesome not having to squint at everything :D

SargeMcCluck
11 Dec 2009, 23:10
Thermal paste is always applied to the base of a heatsink, it's not a sign that the paste is low quality. However, you should always remove the paste and reapply fresh when you lift the heatsink off of the processor.

It's cheap to buy, though. Don't put too much on, that can be just as bad as too little.

I have no problems loading my win7 partition tho. Umm...

*cough*

So all the drama with my g/f is over. Well pretty much. We said f*** off to all the people wanting to tell us otherwise. Annnnd she got kicked out of the other place she was staying because we decided to continue seeing eachother.
So she lives at my house now, which has caused me to pretty much move out for the time being so she has a room and place to stay.
So I've been staying with sort of a 'friend of the family' - that is a lonely old man who likes to talk. I have to drive about 40 extra miles every day if I want to see her or be home to get away from the guy I'm staying with for right now.
So no complaints really... it's just a lot harder than it has been financial wise. My job is going down the ****ter.... and I've been looking for full time work for a looooooong time.
I've been trying to do Home Theater installation... but it's just that no one is hiring worth crap.

So my life has been turned upside down and inside out with living conditions. I don't really mind it... I can handle it. But it's hard. And even though things are harder in this aspect now, it's a lot better than hiding our relationship and being miserable every waking second of the day.

I need a job badly... I'm even really thinking by the end of next week I'm going to go back to my old factory job making Guitar Strings and beg for a job back... even though that job sucked big time... i really need the money and I don't even care if it's second shift. :/ I need it... and badly.

Today, I decided to go trade some 360 games for some PS3 games.

I took a bus, got off just outside of the central metro station. The place I was going to is a couple of blocks from there.

So there was me, happily walking, when suddenly I spot something brown-ish on the corner of my eye. It was large. I focus my sight and... naked fat crazy lady. X_X

She was just walking there, naked. She looked angry. She then crossed the street despite the stoplight being green, causing several vehicles to stop, also possibly burning their drivers's retinas in the process.

Cucumbers, courgettes, peas (or, to be accurate, a pea pod, the peas themselves are seeds) and many more vegetables are actually fruits. If it has seeds, it's a fruit.

However, this is all botanically. In the culinary arts, however, they are for all intents and purposes, vegetables, and this includes tomato.

Computer suddenly turned off. Turned it on again: turned off during the BIOS. Finally got into the BIOS setup - CPU temp 105C. Opened the case, the case fan is spinning at about 180RPM (was so slow I could count the rotations). On my old, crappy laptop.

Also, while that was happening, an eBay auction that was ending soon went up from £25 to around £100 and out of my price range. Damnit!

Take the side of the case off.
Find a household fan.
Done.

SargeMcCluck
28 Jan 2010, 11:15
Hah. That'd work if a case fan was broken, or something. However, a household fan cannot even approach a tiny amount of the cooling power of a heatsink & fan. The CPU hits over 100C within 30 seconds of turning the PC on from cold. No household fan will change that.

Alien King
28 Jan 2010, 11:20
I missed the CPU bit.
There is something clearly wrong with your case fan though if it rotates a mere 3 times a second.

Were you referring to the fan actually connected to the CPU over the heatsink?

SargeMcCluck
28 Jan 2010, 11:27
Yes, the fan that is directly connected to the heatsink made a loud noise, then my PC turned off. I managed to check the CPU temp, and it was far too high. Then I opened the case, and saw how slowly the fan was turning. I removed the heatsink, and tried turning the fan manually to see how it felt, and there was extreme resistance. I took the fan apart, and can't figure out _what_ is causing the resistance.

Anyway, I'll just buy a new heatsink in a few days.

Actually, no. Having to travel to Dundee on a Wednesday morning from Warwick Uni for one match at 1pm sucks. That sucks a lot.
It really sucks because we'll have to repeat it for Glasgow the following week if we beat Dundee.

One match is 9 fights - 3 for each weapon (foil, sabre and épée). Team event, first to 45 in each weapon. Basically, I'll travel 375 miles for 3, 3 minute, bouts. Maybe 6 if I have to do the épée too.

So, I checked the mexican PSN store and found that the offer is apparently also available, but alas there is no option to add funds via a credit card, only through psn prepaid cards. Unfortunately, psn cards are not commercially available here, you can only order them through sony's website or calling a call-center, and then instead of giving you the code they send you the card, which takes days to arrive.

The offer ends wednesday as far as I know, and I won't be able to get a card till friday, because the guy I know who brings stuff from the US only goes on thursdays. D:

I'd heard about that sort of thing being a sign of a stroke and whether my age is likely to have one of those or not I wasn't playing around. I immediately ran off to the nearest hospital.

I stayed there all night to be told that it's most likely Neuralgia (basically a pinched nerve), and that I'm going to have a nice fancy doctor bill to pay for just to find out it was nothing to worry about.

on top of that i'm now stuck without any sleep waiting for the financial aid offices to open at school because I got a call yesterday at 3 (while I was in the middle of a 3 hour class) that if I didn't go pick up my financial aid check (that I was unaware was even AT said office) before 430 they were going to ship the check back to the lender.... so now I've got to hope they haven't done so just yet and that I can catch them before they do. otherwise I either drop out for a quarter or have to figure out a way to have my lender reissue the check.

That's what has happened to our political system. Most people don't bother thinking for themselves, they just associate with a party for historical reasons because maybe that's how they were raised, and they follow that party without question. It happens on both sides, but dominantly on the republican side.

So basically politicians claim it's socialist because the insurance companies contribute to their campaigns if they say that, and then the groupthink'd public accepts it without question.

socialism is somewhat of a nebulous concept though. define what you mean by "socialism"

By socialism I mean .. socialism. Not communism like American media makes it out to be.

Hey, guess what? Sweden has been run by a very socialist group of politicial parties for about 85% of the time post-WW2. It's not exactly a COMMUNISTICAL NIGHTMAER!

Labour in the UK is a socialist party. Okay, New Labour (post-1997) changed hugely, but still, again a lot of the time post-WW2, the UK had a socialist party in power.

I'd define modern socialism (as opposed to say, pre-1900 socialism) as ownership of some key industries (schools, rail, mail service, healthcare to name a few), and tax funded welfare systems. Add to that regulation of the market, and social freedoms (gay marriage, right to choose, etc.). Private businesses exist and are privately owned, as can capital.

I know that when you read about socialism in books or on the intarwebs there's a list of a million varieties of socialism, but I can't think of many countries you'd identify as socialist but not communist that don't fit in to my above definition.

He has "mentioned" cancer?
How about he sends you to a specialist to actually "check" for it?
I suggest you do that as soon as possible.
Many, if not most cancers have a good chance for healing if detected in early stages and treated appropriately.

And a good advice:
Stick to orthodox medicine!
Don't use any of those alternative, voodoo practices!

A few days ago I saw a report on TV of a gynaecologist here in Austria, who was using a crazy method of pumping ozone gas (!) into the patients abdomen to cure (!) cancer.
He based all this on a single (!) publication of this method made by a veterinarian (!) who researched this on guinea pigs (!) and said himself that it is not to be used on humans.
The last patient died because of heart failure during that ozone pumping shenanigan, in a clinic that didn't even know that the gynaecologist was doing this in their house.

Another case here in Austria from over 10 years back was with a little girl who had a tumor the size of melon (!) in her abdomen, yet, her parents still stuck with a crazy faith healer who tried to cure the tumor with his magic hands, although she was having severe pain, and was dragged across Europe, hiding from authorities.
In the end, social workers and the police forcefully took the girl into chemotherapy and she still lives today.

On the bright side:
If you should ever have to go through chemotherapy, you wouldn't need to worry about hair loss. ;););)

If someone tried to kill themselves, is that a negative event or an unsigned event? Anyway, that's apparently what my doppelgänger's been up to. He's a guy I befriended who happens to have the same first & last name as me, though I don't know him that well. I was last hanging out with him less than a month ago. Sounds like depression & the stress of his job in the navy has got to him. Spending weeks at a time confined to a boat when you're having trouble sleeping can't be good. I don't think I'd been around him enough to notice any signs though.

I've got a rather distant relative [an obscure sort of cousin] who's just returned from his maiden voyage on a large cargo vessel that was having all sorts of naval fun around China and what have you there. He vowed never to do that sort of thing again, to hell with the four years of education and training he was required to complete, and is now looking for a new direction in life. So yeah, I'm beginning to imagine such life can't be easy, even less so if it has to do with a branch of military at the same time.

You eat bad omens for breakfast, though, Bloops. Or scare them away with a combination of haircut and utensil music. Keep it up.

http://www.krgv.com/news/local/story/Cartel-Suspects-Killed-in-Shooting-at-Tec-de/MnT0_u8MLU6bj9i54bsjiQ.cspx

Basically, members from either the CDG or the Zetas have been blocking several roads around the city for the past few days. Some people are rumoring that they are just trying to deviate attention from something else. As of right now it's unclear why they have been doing this.

There was also a shooting yesterday early in the morning, it happened in front of the Tecnologico de Monterrey, the largest private university in my city. It's where my brother studied, and it's also where my sister is currently studying. Good timing of hers going to sweden this semester I guess. :p
Two people were killed, allegedly members of the Cartel, and one soldier was injured by a grenade.

edit: Turns out the two guys that died were actually students. Just innocent bystanders. :/

a soldering iron and some wire
You should also get some flux (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flux_%28metallurgy%29).
Makes your solder joints much cleaner and you need less solder tin.
Also, it's essential if you're gonna work on circuit boards.

bonz

There's flux in the wire :o
Ah, yes, but from my experience, the results are still better if you apply the flux to the spots you want the soldering tin to go.

It prevents the tin flow away and literally sucks it by increased surface tension, which greatly helps with solder joints close to each other.

On the other hand you can also mess up the results big time, if you get flux to unwanted areas.

4 things I don't want to have to deal with right now, especially concurrently:

1) My computer just blew up. Smelled awful. Now I need a new one.

2) Finals are coming up. I'm supposed to be studying, but

3) Rocket competition is coming up, and we have to finish our rocket SOON. If we don't get our rocket engine done within two weeks we can't test fire, and they probably won't let us launch. And then we have another week after that (finals week...) to finish making the structures before we have to leave for Utah for the real deal launch.

4) The girl I was unofficially dating last year who is now studying abroad and with whom I have been in a state of limbo but there being a possibility of us picking up where we left off when we returned, she pretty much told me off and said we shouldn't hang out when she gets back, pretty much trying to kill any chance of us resuming.

I was starting to get used to 2 and 3, and then 4 came at me and that wasn't optimal timing. But then 1 happened, so I have to deal with 2 and 3, with 4 weighing on my shoulders, and with 1 making my life a royal pain in the ass. :P I guess that's life though, eh?

I had to stay up all night without any sleep to finish a class paper last week, and now my internal schedule is royally screwed up. Ever since then I've gone to sleep at 6:00 AM and wake up at 2:00 PM or so. It's annoying.

And the paper didn't end up being very good at all anyway because I didn't give half a crap about what I was writing about. Which is probably why I got a C in that class.

And I completely forgot to do class evaluations this semester, which is annoying because I had actual feedback for once, namely how one of the classes was one of the best school experiences I ever had.

:(

The good news is that most of the "do I really WANT an animation degree?" depression/angst I had last semester has evaporated due to having a killer idea for my final animated short. So.

For the last 2-3 years the animation students of MCAD have been gradually making a sort of mural on the walls of the crappy animation studio. We'd draw things on the wall in pencil and it made up a big collaborative cluster**** of wonderment. It wasn't an "official" mural or whatever the hell, but that really didn't matter.

AND THEN.

THE ****ING COLLEGE PAINTED OVER THE ****ING THING AND NOW IT'S ALL ****ING GONE AND I'M SO ANGRY RIGHT NOW I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO AHGUHGURHGUHADKHGOHEIUGHROGHGHFISGHLKFJHKFHGKJLCNV K

I don't actually know any details or anything (such as HOW painted over it is...) but I don't care. Ugh.

For the record, this college doesn't have the best track record with its animation program. The studio itself shares a big space with a bunch of private studios that painters etc. use, and it's not an enclosed space either, with openings leading into hallways/upper floors/etc. Which is usually nice, to have rooms flow into each other. But right on the floor above is the cutting area, where people trim paper/board/flat stuff down to size, and sometimes that stuff gets REALLY LOUD and oh lorrrd. We try to bring things in like a TV or chairs to make things more comfortable for people who are rendering stuff (and there is ALWAYS something rendering), and it always just gets taken away by someone because we have to confirm it or some such bureaucratic bull**** that is completely pointless Bhbhbhhhbhhhhhhhzzzzz I just want a damn room that's quiet and comfortable and with walls that we are allowed to doodle on if we damn well want to.

bonz

Things like that suck, and are usually totally unnecessary. Our first project at school was to make board games which all ended up getting thrown out over the christmas break. The classroom they were kept in was ours until the end of the year when the old students left and we could take over the computer hall. Nobody told us they were going to clear the place out over the break, and they could have easily just moved it to storage, but no.

SargeMcCluck
2 Jun 2010, 10:22
The thing is, that sort of stuff is usually not somebody intentionally being a jackass. In the former case, places often have set dates (say, every 10 years) when certain rooms get painted - they order painters to do it, and the painters are not going to go to the room and then question what they're being paid for. In the latter case, similar things but with the cleaners. If cleaners had to ask someone in charge every time they found something, they'd have to work 24/7. It still sucks when stuff like that happens, but it's not often somebody intentionally thinking "I WILL DESTROY THAT MURAL!"

SupSuper
2 Jun 2010, 22:19
It's still completely inappropriate for an environment like that. Sure, they're getting paid for it, but if that's how much worth the students are compared to their precious painters or cleaners or whatever, it doesn't say a lot about the place. It's like if you worked at an office where cleaners would just randomly come in and clean out all your work in papers, whiteboards, bulletin boards, etc.

Oh wait, that's my university... Yeah I hate that kind of **** too.

SargeMcCluck
2 Jun 2010, 22:30
Thing is, who do you blame? Blaming the cleaners would be dumb, they get terrible pay, and they don't have the time to keep asking their employers "Should I clean this? This? This?", and most employers would get fed up even if they did have time, and hire new cleaners. Blame the people employing the cleaners? They're probably not wanting to ruin everything, they just say "go paint rooms a, b and c" and it happens.

MCAD works differently. The painting/nail-hole filling is always done by school students on a work study job whenever I see it, and they should've known better. Maybe the school hired other people for the summer painting job, but I've never seen that kind of thing, so I don't know about that.

Considering where he lives, it's the most likely scenario. Would also explain why the police nor the army are willing to do anything. Other than being part of it that is, sometimes the perpetrators are members of the police/army as well, either by their own account or sometimes allegedly working for the cartel/ los zetas. It's all a complicated mess of corruption and sh1t, really. You can't really trust anyone in a position to help.

So I guess they know where he lives? If the police can't do anything, I'd be arming my family with tranquillizer guns or something...
I imagine that knowing he is under surveilance would keep him paranoid enough not to attempt this lest he unleash any more attacks from their behalf.

The problem is, once they've extort money from him, they know he'd be the perfect victim for continued "protection" money extortion.
And since they've got a reputation to be ruthless and stop at nothing, he'd have to fear for his and his family's life. :(

Disney HR reshaping their department. Apparently I am unwanted mass. My supervisor fought to keep me because I was the only design fella they had - they bought Adobe CS4 just for me to use - but the word from the Powers That Be was "we'll hire someone later".

F**kers.

Oh my lord, the (sort of) new dA code seems like a great thing, what with things opening and closing within a single page without reloads. Too bad it's absolutely terrible. If I open more than one tab my entire god damn browser slows to a friggin halt.

Web 2.0, everybody! Hope you like having your system slowed down by loads of unnecessary javascript!

Oh, and the categories are STILL miserably awful. Still the most confusing hierarchy possible, still with overlap, still without icons, YEARS after I've already complained about this. It's the most painful part of the whole uploading process and it drives me nuts. I'm trying to upload an animated GIF that's fanart of Homestuck, but... there's no section for "animation" in the fanart section, and trying to upload to "Other" gives me "You can't upload GIFs to that section" WHAT IN THE HELL IS THE POINT OF THAT JESUS CHRIST. THIS IS THE MOST POPULAR ART WEBSITE ON THE INTERNET AND YOU HAVE THE MOST GODAWFUL CATEGORY SYSTEM HUMANELY POSSIBLE FUUUUUUCK.

...Just needed to vent about that. Sorry. Move along, now.

yeah. I don't know how the hell came up with the categories, but they make NO SENSE AT ALL!

I don't have your slow down issues at all, though.

There are alternatives.

I never got the whole "web 2.0 javascript dynamic ajax techno babble" craze anyways. Just because you're reloading transparently doesn't mean you're not reloading, it just means you're being a lot more complex about it.

So my car insurance goes up because I'm unemployed, but because I'm commuting to my volunteering work it still counts as "Social and Commuting" rather than just Social.

So much for the Big Society

(oh well, at least the insurance company were nice and decided to knock £60 off as a goodwill gesture. Still more than last time, though)

How will this impede your tournament performance? one is forced to wonder.not likely at all. it's my ring finger on my left hand. I doubt it'll come into play in the tournament.

it WILL, however, come into play in the game of Humans Vs Zombies that I'm participating in at school. which starts monday, ironically enough.

I've somehow totally knackered one foot while sitting in my supervisor's office, and I have no idea how. All I know I was in there for two hours, sitting on an incredibly comfy chair and when i came out it hurt like hell to walk
