I suppose a roll-over bar is sufficient if you use a sturdy seat and a 6-point seat belt plus a helmet.
No need to go for a 6-point harness. Just a 4-point one would do.

How's the go-kart powered? If you're using an engine, try to mount that as low as possible - that will help the centre of gravity issues.

5hp Briggs & Stratton. And it's going to be pretty high off, actually - somewhere above the rear wheel... It's a bit late to change that now. Fortunately the engine can't weigh more than 20 pounds, so it hopefully doesn't throw everything off too much..... We've also considered putting weights on the bottom if it's too much an issue...:p

That engine shouldn't weigh too much, so you should be OK. Just put a lightweight roll cage and decent harnesses on and you'll be safe :D

I'm moving on friday. Quite exciting, and a little scary at the same time. Our family has never moved before, and now I'm moving to my own place. I just hope I don't get the fever my dad got the other day. Sitting in a car for 6-8 ours and packing/unpacking large boxes does not feel like a fun activity when you're knocked out by a virus.

But, since I've talked to quite a few of my classmates and they seem quite alright, it's rather reassuring. But really, who here says "university"? Things like "I'm going to university" and "What university are you attending?" just sound awkward in this country. Everyone here says "college", but at the same time, all the Brits on this forum say "I'm going to uni" and such.

In the US, saying "university" sounds kinda pretentious, y'know? Or maybe that's just a SoCal thing.

In the US, saying "university" sounds kinda pretentious, y'know? Or maybe that's just a SoCal thing. As I understand it, "university" implies "Ivy League" for most Americans.

"College" can also mean "university" in Britain, particularly for people of my parent's generation and older (as most people doing A-Levels went to sixth form rather than a further education college). To add to the confusion, there are the collegiate universities (Cambridge, Oxford, Durham, the University of Wales) where each university is composed of a whole bunch of colleges spread throughout a city (or country, in Wales' case).

Not really? If you say that you're going off to university, it generally means that you're going to go get a graduate degree (MA, PhD, etc.) in something. But given that there are probably well over 500 universities in the States, it hardly implies that you're going to one of the eight universities that happen to be in that athletic conference.

I only wrote that note because us portuguese don't call it either of those things:
In Portugal the term college (colégio) is mainly used to refer to private secondary education institutions, while Universidade (University), Instituto or Escola Superior are the terms generally used for several kind of higher education institutions.

This seems to be my lineup of subjects:

1st Year
- Linear Algebra
- Diferential and Integral Calculus
- Programming Fundamentals
- Digital Systems
- Computation Theory

2nd Year
- Management
- Operative Systems
- Complex Analysis and Diferential Equations
- Electromagnetism and Optics
- Object-Oriented Programming
- Diferential and Integral Calculus II

3rd Year
- Portfolio I
- Computer Networks
- Person Machine Interfaces
- Databases
- Systems and Signals
- Programming Logic

For anyone that's already been through any of this, tell me: how screwed am I?

In the US, saying "university" sounds kinda pretentious, y'know? Or maybe that's just a SoCal thing. It gets really annoying on things like Facebook. US has a 3 tier school system: Elementary, Middle and High, we just have Primary and Secondary. For people I know at uni, I have to choose I know them at college, even though I've never been to college. Stupid thing... It wouldn't take much effort to just give UKers the option to use university, primary, and secondary schools as options.

thomasp
16 Sep 2007, 19:43
Technically, we have 3 tiers too - primary, secondary and sixth form (which is sometimes referred to as college). 4 if you include university. Mind you, only two of those are compulsory.

Agreed.

I'm starting to think that there's noone out there for me.
I know that's incredibly futile to say that at the tender age of 16.
But...
I dunno. I'll tell you the whole story of the past six months.
I left my girlfriend, of a year, to be with this other girl, who had been hitting on me since September. After a month and a half of knowing me she told me she loved me. I had never met her.
Being a gullbile soul. I believed her. Why? Cos I got in contact with her because I thought she was cute, and I thought "I'd never have a chance!", but I was happy with my girlfriend.
And for about...six months, she had been hitting on me, constantly there, when I got home, it would be her that would be in my attention, and during school it would be my girlfriend.
So yes.
I had enough, I wanted to be with this girl quite badly by the end, so I split up with my girlfriend...
This other girl...never thought I'd be with her...and got a boyfriend. She didn't love him...or so she said, she used to imagine me whilst kissing him.
And. Two days, before I split up with my girlfriend. She fell in love with him.
So I split up with my girlfriend.
To be told, "I can't be with you, I love my boyfriend".

After all that.

It continues.
I stay single for a month.
And I do miss my ex and regret what I do alot.
During this time, she's pretty disdraught.
And as a rebound almost, she gets with one of my friends.
I was fine with it, I wanted her to be happy, and I knew that my friends, who had practically disowned me wouldn't be happy with me trying to get back with her.
She goes out with him, next night, she rings me up saying, "I can't be with him anymore, I'm still in love with you".
And I confess that I still love her...
And then she's presented with a decision, to go out with me again, but she doesn't trust me. Or choose him.
This happens.
A grand total.
Of three times.
Incredible I know.
The third time. Really hit me hard.
It was before the GSCE's.
She split up with her boyfriend, because she needed to concetrate on her studies...but in truth, she still liked me too much.
And during that time then...it was almost like she was making us compete for her.
And well. For a good while i was winning. At a friends camping party, myself and her shared a tent, and well.
We almost had sex. I say almost, because, well quite frankley, after 5 hours of pre-sexual activity, you can get quite tired yeah?
So yeah...we were back on "i love you's". And then...we had an argument two days later. My fault.
And she drifted away from me.
More towards him, each day.
That was painful, truely painful. All my friends, bar a few, wanted this other guy to have her.
Yet he was doing absolutely nothing.
She even dumped him two weeks ago, because he did nothing. : / But then got back with him cos she missed him.

So yes.
My confidense.
Is ZERO.
I have no hope.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE.
Monday! I saw Ross Noble Live! :D

It sounds like she doesn't know what she wants. But you know what you want. You want someone to love, and don't want to lose her because you miss having her. Well, unfortunately, as they say, that's life. It's one big mess of a complicated soap opera, and there's no worse a thing to mess with your head than emotion.

You have to live through these ups and downs to appreciate exactly what love is and what it means to you. It's a word that's banded around and stretched over relationships but because it holds varying definitions in everyone you'll find your idea may never meet eye to eye with your partner's.

And don't be saying you have zero confidence. You put yourself in my position, at 24 and unable to ever hold down any kind of relationship for longer than two weeks. Your age is for experimentation and exploration, don't waste it.

I agree with Andy, just forget it. What you have is an infatuation. Ride it out.

They said the current drivers aren't vista compatible, but then he emailed me a beta driver, which I never found on their website, to use until the official Vista driver comes out. And it seems to work - I no longer get the error - but I'm not convenient with a cable right now so I'll see later.

Thursday is here, which means, Day Off!
But wait, what? Oh yes I have to go to work!
Because they have scheduled a training for today!
And I just learnt this YESTERDAY.
And they're probably gonna set my day off this week on saturday, which is not a good thing since saturday there's not many calls getting in and I enjoy getting paid for doing less work. :p
So they set my day off to sunday, even tho I asked them not to. I mean surely they could change it, no? But anyway, since they set it to sunday, I'm taking advantage on this and have also set my festive day on monday[basically, when I go to work on a festive day, I am awarded a free day off that I can use whenever I want, and I just so happen to have one available], and I will skip work on tuesday and wednesday, just for the heck of it, and on thursday is my regular day off. So I shall be going back to work until friday.
So W00T vacation, b1tches!
This will affect my ranking and I won't get paid for those two days I'm skipping, obviously, but I don't really give a rads ass.
KISS MY VACATIONING ASS, WORK!

I dunno about anywhere else, but around here the news doesn't even pretend to be near the truth. we had a category 1 hurricane hit a couple weeks ago, and it wasn't even a really bad thunderstorm, it was so weak. the news, however, showed all the destruction and chaos left in the wake of the terrible storm...

Pence rhymes with cents, and is the British equivalent. I don't know where "pence" comes from, but "cents" makes a lot more sense with the root "cent-" meaning 100. (centimeter, etc.)

But yeah, it's about $2 = £1 more or less. (£ = alt 156 - I figured that one out with just random combinations. It took forever, and when I finally got it I've never forgotten it)

I am going to actually THINK about who I vote for. I won't just go in the booth and punch in the person I've seen on TV the most. I'll actually pay attention to what they want to do, if they will generally TRY to do what they say they'll do, if they pander to the corporations that gave them money, if they might take responsibility when they do something wrong (That is a big one), etc.

Of course, it feels like a waste of time when the next voter is going to pick the voter that they think looks the most attractive, but at least I can say I was responsible.

Also, the Daily Show is really the only way anyone should get their national news. Nothing like humor to make things less dreary. :p

How do you think they get into power in the first place? Just saying. :p
Now, I'm not a big into politics either, so don't think I'm trying to mock you or anything.
I firmly believe that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Or, in other words, when people vote to get another person... They often assume that it's going to be/get better. It seldom ever does, and along with that a new set of problems come up with that person. Even if you would have an honest hearted person really willing to do some major changes for the best... you see other people in office reject them, and the people lean towards someone else. Mainly because people hate change. Sadly, even if it is for the best, people will always be fighting it.

Ugh, 'society' is a mess.

This is the plural used when referring to a sum of money, as in These apples are twenty pence each. When referring to several coins each worth one penny, the correct plural is pennies, as in I have one tenpence coin and three pennies.

Hey guys, I'm back! :D

I finally got my Internet up and running, after some trouble with my isp were they sent my modem to my previous address and had to send a new one, which took another week. Then with my new package they forgot to include the login and password for activating my Internet. Ah well, I'm just happy it's up now.

I've also just finished my first week at school, and so far it's great. Our first assignment was to create a board game (actually just a non-digital game) in under 48 hours, on a budget of 250kr (~£19). We made a boardgame where you play as pirates, featuring leathal Ninja invasions. We also had a guest lecturer from Avalanche Studios (Just Cause) who talked about the gaming industry and the terrors to be expected from it etc.

But on monday the real courses begin, where I start learning Maya and the programmers C++.

In any case, a very refreshing change from the 14 months of slacking off and letting my brain rot.

It's SQL and nameserver and PHP and cron (I think) and so forth. NFS offer more-or-less everything I need. I think they offer more-or-less everything anyone needs. A bit back they sent me an email that said "we've noticed one of your scripts is being used to send spam. we blocked it before anything much could be sent [they monitor this stuff constantly], here's the URL, look, it's including this file so if you URL hack it in this way this happens, so fix it and unblock it when you have a moment -- if you unblock it without fixing it, though, there'll be trouble". I'd like to see your server do that :p

I don't pay for the mailserver option, as I just use GMail, but then I'd still use GMail if I had my own mailserver anyway, because GMail is basically fantastic.

I made my driving test 8 years ago, when I was 18. 20 hours of theoretical classes and 20 hours of driving.
I passed both tests on the first try. Piece of cake, really.

I have to add though, that I have been driving cars since I've been 14.
Once we took the old, soon to be scrapped, car of a friend's dad, which already had the battery removed.
We started it with jump leads (<--not the great webcomic of the same name) and went for a ride through the woods in the mountains, always with the fear of stalling the engine.

Which we eventually did.
So we let the car roll down backwards and started it again. :D
O'course, it takes us longer to learn this side of the pond, for we are AWESOME and have MANUAL TRANSMISSION.
Manual transmission is the way to go.

A thing that I once already asked AT, but forgot:
Is the layout of the gearstick the same in right-hand drive vehicles?

In left-hand drive cars we have a layouts like these:
1 3 5 R 1 3 5
|-|-| '-|-|-|
2 4 R 2 4 6
Which is convenient, you can pull the stick towards your knee when shifting the lower gears (and reverse gear).
In cars with the left layout I already find it annoying that you have to push the stick in a quite awkward angle for the reverse.
The right layout is my favourite, because of that.

IIRC, AT said that the layout is the same in the UK, with the argument that it's cheaper for manufaturers to not have to build a mirrored gearbox.

Same layout in RHD cars, with reverse either to the left of 1st or below 5th (if you have a 5-speed 'box)

Driving manuals is much more fun than driving autos :D

they actually don't HAVE automatics where you guys are?! that's just strange. I can understand if they just weren't as popular or something, but simply not offering it?!

thomasp
5 Oct 2007, 16:12
They do in the UK, but they're not as popular because they give poorer fuel consumption, belch out more grammes of CO2 per kilometre (which means you pay more road tax) and cost more to buy. And considering people don't like having to pay the equivalent of almost US$7.50 per US gallon of fuel, most tend to keep their consumption down "a little"

Plus, driving a manual is proper driving :p

That's another thing you guys don't have: roundabouts :p.

I think in one of my early lessons I wanted to go down from second to first, and ended up going from second to reverse.

Whoops.

Did you have to go and pick the gearbox up from the road after the lesson? ;)

Luckily, when I went from 5th to 1st, we were only doing about 30 or so at the time, and I thankfully didn't throw my foot off the clutch, so the whiplash wasn't too bad :D

I drive a manual too! I can't stand automatics... But it seems nobody else here can drive stick...

My gears are like
1 3
|-|
2 4

but for R you press the stick down, toward the road, and then left and back (toward the rear). The only proper way to do R so it's impossible to get mixed up with any of the other gears.

It also appears that the cone clutches to syncronize 1st gear are bad, so I can only shift into 1st from a stop or near stop. Unfortunately I don't have the tools to take apart my tranny, yet tranny shops would cost a lot. And they don't even seem to make parts of old VW Bug trannies anymore.:-/ You can get all the parts to build a new engine from scratch, but tranny parts are way hard to come by, and most seem to be refurbished or rebuilt.

That's not that weird.

Although mostly in my experience 'reverse' is always separated from the others by some little action like having to raise the knob before it'll let you select it.

Weird.normally those cars are 5-speed manuals, and the reverse is on the left, between first and second gears. you push down and move further left from neutral, and end up basically where you're describing. some put it in it's normal place, though, and simply require that you first push down to get there, while others put it even further to the right than the 5th gear.

and it's really not that strange. mercedes are friggin strange. their automatic's have a stick that's about 2 inches long connected to the steering column. you tap it up once to get it to reverse. down once to get it to drive, and inward once to put it in park. after pushing it in any of these directions it just goes back to it's default place.....it's freaky....

I like the sound of those big old pull-switch jobbies rally cars have. They're like big, friendly steering wheel shoulder buttons. Good videogaming fare, that.

Sometimes I wonder if you could make a car that was controlled by a videogame controller, and if it'd be anything like as good.

The diagram in the car looks something like this:

I had that a couple of years ago (well... I guess it's about 7 years ago now). From what I can remember, the nurse said it was either my appendix or an illness I had that caused similar symptoms but isn't nearly as dangerous. I can't remember ever finding out what it was actually, only that the pains went away and haven't come back.

Today I just put up a "Make Love Not Waste" poster above the trash chute to remind people to recycle, and then just now Housing came by and gave everyone a recycling bin for each room! I'd already gone out and bought one, so now I have two, but nobody else had one, so it's awesome.

Interestingly, the recycling bins, both my old one and the new one, are recyclable, so my roommate jokingly told me to put the old bin in the new one.

She was walking past the six form suite with her friend today, I was inside, and she could see in through the massive windows. We saw each other and she smiles, and then I think she points me out to her friend, and then they start giggling, and then her friend tries pushing her closer to the window I think, but she was too shy.

So.
