I over-use exclamation marks, they've sort of lost all meaning. I am very happy about it, though.

Me and my girlfriend became engaged a few weeks ago.
That is, we officially announced it after two years. Via Facebook.

Facebook is the official definer of relationships.
With that in mind, congratulations.

Also congratulations to Sarge.

On the other side of the coin, I'm single, also a positive event or occurence. :P

I know someone going to that! On the incredibly small chance you meet them avoid everyone from bognor.

In other news, I got bored the other day and wrote a little script that makes these:

So, my sister's semester at sweden is over. However, while she was there, she received an e- mail about an opportunity to do lab practice in france, from july to december. She went for it and she was accepted, so now she's spending six months in paris, doing lab practice. :O
My mom and my aunt will be visiting her next week to help her find an appartment in Paris, they'll stay with her until she starts practice in about three weeks.

Well, my dad wanted a new kitten, and who was I to argue? :p

Sable isn't thrilled about it to say the least, but that's normal. It'll all work out, and they'll be like sisters in a few weeks.

Not sure where the little thing is right now, actually. I think she went behind the couch and turned on her cyborg kitty cloaking device.

Edit: There she is, all crashed out. Big day.

An addendum to this law requires you to add a caption with a witty remark, further increasing the "aww-factor" of the kitten's cuteness.
You're strongly advised against using improper grammar and orthography though.

4 long days at SpaceX down! I work from about 8 to 7, 11 hours a day with some random time for lunch. This is going to take a little adjustment. :P They have flexible hours where you show up and leave whenever you want, with no record of when you were there, no time sheets, no nothing, you just have to get your stuff done. Which puts a lot of pressure on you to work long hours because they give you a lot to do.

They set me up with the most amazing computer ever:

30" LCD
150 GB Intel SSD
3.20 GHz Xeon Quad core
12 GB RAM
nVidia Quatro something 1024MB
one of those logitech 3Dconnexion 6-axis spacial manipulators.

It's crazy fast for normal windows tasks, and when I run the gazillion polygon CAD model of the rocket engine I'm working on it updates the view after only like half a second. I tried loading the whole first stage of the Falcon 9, but after about 15 minutes I cancelled because that was just taking too long, even on that machine...

And I can't tell any of you guys what I'm doing though because that would be breaking ITAR and my NDA ;) But it's a pretty killer place.

Now I'm going to go enjoy my 3 hours of free time I get per day. Whoops that's half gone.

I'll have the place to myself and rent is about what I'm paying now for a house with 7 roommates. :D I've already got a key to the place, and can move in when I feel like it!

I don't get it. Why would you want a web-tv service that follows a schedule?
Indeed.
Besides, this seems to be an non-official, illicit service, so I rather download all seasons of my favourite cartoon series elsewhere and don't have to wait to see something I'm interested in.

Akuryou13
6 Jul 2010, 04:36
I don't get it. Why would you want a web-tv service that follows a schedule?well the only benefit would be to just turn it on to watch a few shows without the intent of being able to watch it all the way through. Nostalgia, I guess, would be another reason you could use, as flimsy as that is.

either way, it doesn't make much sense not to just allow an individual page for each show on the side of the stream.

or maybe it's less bandwidth or something just to stream? I dunno on that end as I've never streamed anything myself.

MtlAngelus
6 Jul 2010, 05:28
I think it's merely the nostalgia factor, being able to watch it as if it was on tv right now, complete with the old commercials and stuff. Clearly if anyone wanted to watch those shows individually they wouldn't be bothering with this.

I was never too much into Toonami, the only thing I watched there was Inuyasha at midnight like 5 years ago or something, but it was probably a very different thing here in mexico than it was in the US.

I would however watch a live stream of Canal 5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XHGC) as it was back around '93-'95, just to relive those days. But that's never going to happen. :(

I just got my financial aid award letter. Last year I got only enough aid to cover my tuition. They paid the bare minimum because I was technically married at the time and making a ton of money.

This year? this year my award letter is saying I'm getting enough for tuition, then enough for tuition AGAIN on top of that. I've been living on bare bones for a while trying to survive on what money I could make for myself, now the entirety of my living expenses are going to be paid for me BEFORE counting my money earned from my job! :D

It's just structured differently. They dislike grad school because it's not practical, and you're much more effective when just working. People with graduate degrees don't really get paid any better here. We're very much into practical knowledge, which you get on the job more than at school. It's a very hands-on company.

Good news everyone! I got an internship as a 3D modeler/texturer at "Super Sledge". :D
It's a new game company based in Stockholm, and so far they haven't released anything. The company is run by the guys who ran Grin, and they are now working on a first person shooter for PS3.

They visited us at school and were looking for people and they interviewed everybody pretty much. And now six of us will be going there as a group. Soo lucky! I was expecting to have to write some eighty letters to companies all over Europe and spend the entire winter being nervous about getting a placement somewhere. I guess this is the benefit of being at the only game-related school in Stockholm. :p

And tomorrow we will visit them to play through the game and see what their office is like etc. Hopefully we can start already within two weeks. And of course, due to the very secret nature of this industry I won't be able to tell anybody what I'm working on for something like eight months. Oh well. :)

Edit: Replaced some useless info with something more relevant, I hope

Surprisingly little pain actually. Mainly just a bit uncomfortable 3 hours after the fact when the first dose of painkillers was starting to wear off. The quality of surgeon may have something to do with it.

Swelling is starting to go down a bit now, I can actually bite things again!

Apparently, nothing. Just the windows partition had messed up some boot files or something. It doesn't make much sense to me, because the first thing I did was to erase the windows partition and do a fresh os reisntall, and it still had the same issue... :-/

I had the same problem on my PC.
Messed up paging file, erroneous MBR, constant BSoDs, strange HDD behaviour, buffer underruns when burning discs,...

My guess was that the SATA controllers were damaged, because I got the same behavior again after a formatting and doing a clean re-install.
Also when I switched to different HDD as the system drive.

My motherboard apparently was malfunctioning before, as the USB controllers didn't recognize USB 2.0 hardware.

Solution: New hardware.
And a switch to Windows 7 64bit.

I noticed that the old motherboard was bent underneath where the CPU sits, with tiny hairline cracks.
As if someone had pushed onto CPU/heatsink...

So I got my Blu Ray copy of Scott Pilgrim on tuesday. First time I watched it I couldn't really form an opinion on it because my mind spent the entire time comparing everything with my memories of the comic(last time I read a comic before watching the movie, when applicable. This is the second time this happens, first time being Watchmen. :p). So I couldn't really tell if the pacing was wrong or if it just felt wrong because of the missing comic dialogue. However, I loved the casting, definitely spot on; also loved the fights and the music is the greatest thing ever.

Watched it again today, now my mind was able to just focus on the movie, so I can finally say that I absolutely loved the movie. Also there's a lot of content on the blu ray, loving all those extras. The Making Of is pretty amazing, really shows how much effort and love was put into this film.

So yeah, I'm rating it five stars because it's awesome.

Australia 245 (Hussey 93, Anderson 4 for 51) and 304 (Clarke 80, Swann 5 for 91)

Already came down after 2-3 orbits. It was just a test flight, to verify the communications, manuevering, and reentry of the capsule. We have to prove our worth before NASA lets us anywhere near the space station. ;)

Next we have to fly in formation with the ISS and reenter, then do a test docking. Then we're clear to do regular cargo missions. And in a few years hopefully we're start doing people too.

I didn't work on the capsule though, I was working on the rocket's main 1st stage engines. There's the engine we're flying now, the one we're going to replace it with soon, and then I'm working on the replacement for that one. So a good 3 years at least until anything of mine flies. Ah well.

To actually get into OD, Team17 would need to cooperate with them or they would need to obtain an order from some sort of judge. Or they'd have to turn one of us into a snitch. :p

I was in Christchurch for 3 nights for Christmas, and felt 10 earthquakes (aftershocks) on Sunday. I guess it's a positive event since nobody was seriously injured since the main earthquake months ago. Exciting stuff.

One interesting thing is that the shaking for the biggest aftershock while I was there was greater than the shaking for the original earthquake, the difference being that the aftershock only lasted about 2 seconds rather than 40. So it was a much smaller magnitude and most of the damage had already been done.

England won the Ashes 3-1, winning at Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney (all by an innings), losing in Perth and drawing in Brisbane. Alastair Cook made 766 runs in the series, the second highest aggregate by an Englishman in any series. Jimmy Anderson took 24 wickets. But most importantly, it was a team effort, with England racking up scores of 500+ four times and managing to take 90 Australian wickets out of a possible 99 (Ryan Harris couldn't bat in the second innings at Melbourne due to injury).

Not sure exactly what you mean by play well. It feels like you are pulling of a heist, but it's not like a realistic simulation in any way. People who expect SWAT 4 type realism rather than an arcade shooter might be disappointed. Mostly because the police and special forces swarm you in huge numbers and don't care much about self preservation. I'm not saying the A.I is bad, quite the opposite, but we want it to be chaotic with tons of resistance.

I don't know how much I want to or can talk about specifics, probably best to let reviewers do their job. I will most likely defend any faults with a bunch of reasons that don't matter to you. :p

Brink is a good example of this. Having the ability to run and jump in a parkour style is great, but it's been put into a game that's just an average shooter, so the overall experience is that of an average shooter with an interesting twist.

So is this game you're working on actually fun to play or is it just an interesting idea with an alright execution? I feel like you jumping in fairly late in the game would have a more outside opinion on such matters and be able to talk about it more objectively than someone who'd been pouring their soul into it for years.

edit: it's not like every artist loves every piece he does, or every actor loves every movie he's in. Xinos knows more about the game than I do, so I just want his opinion on it. it looks fun from here. does it look as fun from there? or, if he's played it, IS it as fun as it looks?

Finally, E3 is next week, and we are now going public with Payday (http://www.overkillsoftware.com/payday/) :D

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/117/1172439p1.html
The concept of that game looks nice.
Reminds me of the heist scenes in movies like Point Break (1991) and Quick Change (1990), with president masks and clown masks respectively.

Computer game-wise, the only thing that comes close (in respect of holding up hostages at gun-point) are a few heist missions in the GTA series, as well as the Reservoir Dogs game.
Although the latter is more of a getaway game after the heist.
So my internship officially ended two days ago, and the good news is that I (as well as the others from my class) will be hired for the remaining time of the project. Hopefully longer of course, but it will all depend on how well we do.

No, they don't really allow interns to play except on some rare occasions. We aren't getting unpaid to slack off after all, that's a privilege that comes with the job.

Heh, of course I have played it. I do almost daily. And yes, since you are forcing me to say it, I do think it's fun! Absolutely. It might be because the game is constantly improving; AI getting better, assets, audio and level design coming together, or it's because of the stuff they put in the coffee.. but I haven't gotten bored of playing it yet. So that must mean something positive :)

Hmm, mostly optimization stuff actually. There's not been a great deal of entirely new 3D assets to make, but I've made a fair amount. But some specific props I can mention are a telephone booth, riot fence, rooftop water tower, street planters, hotdog stand, a small vehicle... I've also added physics to a ton of stuff which is fun because you get to shoot at things :p
An example of that would be that our art director created a bunch of abstract paintings for the bank, and I added breakable glass and made them fall down when you shoot at them. So you rarely make an entire prop yourself.

But usually it's some kind of optimization work. They had a bunch of old stuff that didn't quite hold up or fit the style.. often textures will be way to big and wasteful, so you want to reduce the resolution to 25-50% but still keep all the details and preferably make it even better ^^. For instance somebody might have made a bookshelf and mapped every side to it's own unique area on the texture, where you might just as well tile the same piece of wood over the entire thing, which can even look better since you can get a higher resolution details in that smaller area.

3D work in games is often allot more technical than artistic, since you got to keep performance in mind and think of clever ways to get as much detail as you can as cheaply as you can. You are constantly thinking.

Oh man, I wish. Like you could shoot up a hatch to reveal a big propane tank inside, which could be used to blow the whole thing up.. *dreams*

But in other news, E3 was last week and things went extremely well. Articles written about Payday since E3 have been insanely (http://www.overkillsoftware.com/?p=361) positive. I don't get it, everything else at E3 must have been terrible. We got something like ten nominees too for 'best at E3'. Beating Modern Warfare 3 on PC Gamer :D
GameTrailers (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/best-press-best-of-e3/716377) nominee. Battlefield 3 got 42 nominees I think haha. But they are a hundred people working with massive EA fundings, so that's kind of cheating.

Edit: Some journalists are getting a few things wrong though.. in the co-optimus article he says you can pick a class and also change class at any time. We don't have classes in a Team Fortress or Battlefield sense. What happens is that you always have a choice of three unlocks to get at next level up, which are grouped into three classes. You can change that at any time, "Ok I want to follow the sharpshooter tree now because that will give me this weapon in 5 levels"
Or you might pursue Support just long enough to get the medic bag and then go for assault. But eventually you will unlock everything.

I don't think having a fan base wins anybody rewards, not in this industry. It can be very dangerous as you need to live up to expectations. I would say that because of their fan base they are under a lot of pressure to make something great.

No, I'm pretty sure Call of Duty still gets nominated frequently for an assortment of awards, and that franchise literally has nothing but a fan base.

It has many things other than a fanbase! Leave "literally" alone!

.. or I'll kill you!

(Abuse of literally is one of my pet peeves >_>)

[Even if you meant the games are useless except for having a fanbase, there are people that hate the game, so it has haters as well as fans, so it can't literally have only fans]

Means the only thing it has going for it is the fanbase. The games do not even try to compete with anything else anymore. LITERALLY. *runs*

Payday will be available for pre orderon September 20'th
Will it be available on Steam?
If so, can you tell whoever is in charge to include some exclusive TF2 promotional items?

For example those clown masks or maybe even that Mac10 with suppressor as an replacement for the Sniper's SMG. :)

I love supporting good developers or indie developers and bonus stuff for pre-ordering is always nice (apart from a discount).
Also, I love how the TF2 community (read: silly Steam forum muppets) complain about all the exclusive promo items. :D

Xinos

Yep, Steam and PSN at the same time :)
I doubt we'll get any TF2 itens though. Sony is in charge of all our marketing, not sure if that's thei thung :p
They did make 80 thousand plastic masks though, some were handed out at comic con. That's like a real life tf2 item thats not related to tf2!

Got a 3DS for the new price and managed to login to the e-shop before the time-limit to get the free games. :3

No games for it right now tho, other than the built in AR stuff that I haven't tried yet. I'll probably pick up Ocarina of Time 3D next week or something.

The 3D effect btw seems pretty lame. I get this odd glare on the screen when the effect is on, too. But who cares, I can just turn it off.

Sorry for the brag post, but, I bought new computer parts this weekend! I am just now done assembling it with a fresh windows installation. Which means I have almost no time tonight play around with it. My old Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 didn't even meet the required specs for Human Revolution, and I've been wanting to replace it for a while now. It's been the component that's held me back the most. So I got a i7 2600K, and I found insanely cheap ram (http://www.inet.se/artikel/5315110/corsair-8gb-2x4096mb-cl9-1600mhz-vengeance-lp) (that's about £55/€60). Doesn't feel like a long time ago you paid twice that for one gigabyte . And I got a new case (Fractal Design - Define R3). Which is muuch better than the one I had. Noise reduction padding, and even with a door taken off it's quiter than my old chassis, which I had to weigh down with a bunch of old books and hard drives to stop the case from vibrating :D

I also managed to break my Antec heatsink because those push pins are horrible. So I'm using the stock CPU sink for now, which is a little unsettling, I don't like my CPU temp being at 60 :/

I'm almost looking forward to playing GTAIV again with maxed out settings than the new Deus Ex. But that's probably because I havn't allowed myself to beleive it can be as good as the first game yet. Scarred for life by Invisible War..
