Apparently you can drop a lit match into jet fuel and it won't ignite. I personally haven't tested that theory.

On Mythbusters (this ep (http://www.thetvdb.com/?tab=episode&seriesid=73388&seasonid=29482&id=343014&lid=7)) they tried to light a line of jet fuel with a blowtorch, if I recall correctly, and it wouldn't light. It wasn't until they lit it as a fine spray that it ignited; it requires a lot of oxygen to ignite.

Air out of a compressed can is only for a moment or two, a vacuum cleaner can keep going for quite a long time - enough to build up quite a lot of static on something it's rushing past. Modern components do have fairly good static protection (whereas it used to be very easy to fry ICs), so it may or may not be a problem anymore but I remember reading warnings against it.

What Matty said. So long as you allow sufficient time for any static charge to disperse safely (i.e. not while the PC is on) I can't imagine this causing a problem. It wouldn't be much charge anyway. Certainly not enough to cause any arcing or cool stuff like that.

It doesn't matter if the PC is on at all, though, to damage a chip all you need to do is apply a voltage larger than it's designed to be protected against to the wrong pin. Old CMOS used to be protected up to about 2.5kV, which a vacuum cleaner can easily exceed. I'm fairly certain modern ICs are much better protected, but considering how much it'd cost to replace your motherboard it's not worth the risk.

Just take into account that cheapy unbranded (or some brand that has a terrible/non-existent website) is often terrible. I used to order it all the time, and it often arrived DOA, and otherwise often died after just a month or two, didn't perform very well, and was, well, horrible.

I have yet to figure out why, but no. that isn't always the case. some games actually run better windowed.Well the theory is that with a full-screen game, your hardware only has to worry about rendering that one game, but with a windowed application, your hardware has to occupy itself with both the game and everything else that's going behind on your desktop, including any other similar applications. Unlike typical applications that have to play nice with everyone else, most modern games are designed to use up all your resources while they're running, because screw new-fangled concepts like "multi-tasking", so any kind of windowed/task-switching can lead to performance hits.

Of course this is a non-issue with lightweight games or if you have enough resources to waste or you're using virtualization/emulation or you just got lucky, and if you task-switch a lot it can compensate. But in general it's a good guideline to follow.

I suppose it's about the strength and unpredictability of the internet. That's why I was behind it anyway. Funny thing is I don't think I'd even heard of The X Factor until a few months ago.

It's going to be tedious and/or amusing next Xmas as everyone tries to push a different song. So it's hard to imagine we could repeat the feat.

X-Factor is set up so that over the weeks of its airing it builds up suspense and support for/from the public, and ends ultimately with the most popular contestant releasing a song in the week where record sales count to the Christmas No. 1.

The clever, carefully-planned campaign for the Rage Against The Machine song was no different. As Cowell has said in the past "The British public have spoken/decided."

Besides, Joe Mcwhatshisface was featured in an article in The Sun where he was quoted as hating the band and song, saying it was rubbish, and pictured throwing darts in to a picture of RATM's lead singer against a dart board. Not the best or most curteous way to start off your career.

FutureWorm
21 Dec 2009, 03:16
dude i follow on twitter summed up the whole thing quite well: "Congrats RATM fans: you robbed Simon Cowell's company (Sony) & gave it to RATM's deserving company: Sony."

Presumably by buying the songs that they like, the British public are making the Christmas #1 happen. Well, apart from this year, obviously.

My sister insisted on it being a Mac mostly because everyone she knows has a Mac, she likes the OS and she hates Windows based Laptops because her last one (a toshiba laptop) pretty much became a steaming pile of crap within two years of purchase. :p

My sister actually had to go get it, because she has an american visa and I don't. But still, it was my christmas gift to her, so to speak.

My sister left today for Uppsala, Sweden, she's studying a semester at the Uppsala University(she's majoring in Biotechnology).

I wanted to go drop her off and maybe stay a week with her, but it's expensive and I don't have my passport. :p Plus there were logistic issues: My brother left to Cancun today(bachelor party for one of his friends) and he'll stay there the whole weekend, and we are currently upgrading our office at work which means we can't both take the same days off because someone has to be here supervising the work.

I'm kinda scared for her, she's never lived by herself, and the climate change is considerable (lowest temperature I remember getting here is around -4°C, back when I was a kid. It hasn't gone under -2°C since 2004. It rarely even goes under 5°C.) Here's to hoping she doesn't freak out(she was kinda freaking out at the airport already). :-/

That box set is in no way legitimate. A number of those items haven't been released on DVD yet by Disney. A number of those items aren't even Disney-owned - Daffy Duck? Tom & Jerry? And why would a Disney classic boxset contain terrible straight-to-DVD sequels, or the Recess movie? Or Underdog?!

I'm sure Disney's anti-piracy team already know about this, but I'll pass it along anyway. I still know a few of the guys there.

are those as painful as they sound?
No.
Two injections with the local anaesthetic are basically the biggest pain during surgery.

Right now, I still have a feeling as if my left testicle had been squeezed in a too tight pant, nothing that can be treated with analgesics.

I had not bruising or swelling and no bleeding at all, since the surgery was the non-scalpel method (NSV). Instead of two incisions with a scalpel, only a single small hole is punched, through which the vasa are pulled out. The hole isn't even stitched afterwards.

All in all, going to the dentist or a bad hangover are much worse.

It is, but with only 70-80% chance of natural insemination to work.
Also, it'd cost several thousand bucks for such a microsurgery, which no insurance would pay.
(The vasectomy cost me €480)

So, you should consider vasectomy as a permanent contraception solution.

Is the pain from when you dived for cover from the explosion?

The only explosions present were the pyrotechnics. There were this blazes of fire that would go off during key moments of certain songs, and boy did they pack some heat. I was standing about half a football field from the stage and I could still feel the heat when they went off. Pretty amazing. The straining of vocal chords occurred mostly during Master of Puppets, One and Nothing Else Matters. Oh and Seek and Destroy, but only because it was the last song and Hetfield asked the audience to give their best, you can't say no to that man. :p

It looks pretty nifty on PC. That said, the main reason I want it on PC instead is not for the graphics but for more precise controls. It can get kinda difficult aiming at things with the Dualshock3, I suspect I'll have a much easier time attaching things to other things with a mouse/keyboard. :p

I thought the target-assistance was pretty good, actually. I mean, you won't get any headshots from vaguely aimed reticules but go into shoulder-cam and popping skulls is pretty easy. And vaguely aiming in enemies' directions and unleashing a clip of bullets seems to work just fine :)

Besides, I prefer to kill them by dragging them behind a moped or letting a helicopter spiral out of control and land on their faces.

edit: just checked out the video - it looks very nice, I must say. My only comment would be that I've not yet seen water (the demo area doesn't have any) but other than that it looks almost identical on the PS3.

Selling gifts is technically illegal too, but seeing that Valve themselves offer 4-packs, I doubt that they'd enforce that.
Or maybe they're really so naive that they believe someone would buy a 4-pack and give it away to friends for free...

The waiting lines can be pretty bad, but the counterpoint is that if the lines are really short, it's only because a lot of people don't have the opportunity to be _in_ those lines because they have no healthcare...

However, I've never heard of anyone with a potentially fatal disease having to wait. The waiting is more for things like vasectomies or gastric bypasses, etc. etc.

O_o I just read a full argument against the healthcare reform. they argue against the benefits (providing health care to those who cannot otherwise obtain it) by saying that this new system is socialist.

that's all they say. that is their ENTIRE argument. no reason given why socialism is a bad thing, just that it apparently is so obviously bad that it needs no explanation.

the poster's proposed solution to the healthcare issue? stop healthcare providers from being sued because those lawsuits are (apparently) the entire reason poor people can't afford the care.

Isn't it just that America's fear of communism also became a fear of socialism as the right-wing powers of the time branded the two as one and the same? That's why Obama is regularly called a Marxist, even though he's not even a socialist - wanting socialised health care doesn't get you there (neither does wanting say, socialised education).

Socialism has just become such a dirty word in the States.

it doesn't. the new laws include nothing about a public healthcare option or any government-controlled health infrastructure. rather, it requires that all americans purchase a plan from a private insurer, which will actually benefit the companies – the day after the new legislation was announced, health stocks went up a fair bit. it also puts in place some restrictions on what health insurance companies can and can't do, but it's far from the progressive reform a lot of us were hoping for

arguing that this system is socialist is like arguing that our car insurance system is socialist. the idea that anyone has a "right" to not get health insurance is ridiculous on its face

I'm gonna wait for the inevitable bugs to be worked out a bit before I have a go at another forum fortress or something, because I miss doing that. For anyone who doesn't keep up with this: DF hasn't had an update for years, now. He overhauled the entire material system and combat and sites and ohmygodohmygodohmygoddddd.

I bought this beauty of a software instrument a few days ago. Damned glorious. I can get inspired with pretty much any patch chosen at random.

I just had a phone interview with SpaceX and it went really well!! :)

If you're not familiar with SpaceX, they're the coolest private space company out there. They haven't launched any people yet so they aren't quite as well-known as Spaceship One, but spacex is far more sophisticated. They focus more on satellites and space station resupply which just doesn't get as much publicity as the tourism.

You can't find ANYthing to do, and even if you do, good luck actually killing anything with the combat where it is.

Also there's apparently a fortress-eradicating temperature bug which basically turns the whole thing into a microwave so all of your dwarves suffer horrible blood-belching boiling deaths.

We got a new fridge and a stove, they just arrived yesterday. Fridge is now functional and we have to wait for a technician to come adjust the stove.

Our old stove broke like, ages ago but we hadn't bothered replacing it because we had a tiny electric one and we don't cook much, but then that one nearly burnt a hole on our kitchen table when making christmas dinner and then proceeded to stop working altogether. We weren't actually planning on getting one either until we were at the store choosing a new fridge and decided we should get both.

Our fridge just recently broke, but it's not the first time it does that, so we figured it was about time to replace it, plus it is OLD and the new one probably consumes a lot less energy, which is good I guess.

I assume that's not the Rolls Royce Merlin engine... :p (for those who don't know, the Merlin was a 27-litre, 1000 horsepower V12 piston engine used on the Spitfire, among other aircraft - with superchargers, it hit over 2000HP!).

Sounds like a pretty awesome internship. The closest I ever got to anything like that was some summer work experience doing maintenance on the BAe 146 aircraft - a plane known for its mechanical problems, particularly with engines. Nicknames included the "Quadrophonic leafblower", "the only aircraft with five auxiliary power units - one on the tail and two on each wings" and "four oil leaks connected by a random electrical fault".

A problem I was having where the music volume fluctuates on my PC got particularly bad today. I Googled it, and learned that a common problem is "sticky stuff" on the circuit board of the volume control doofer. Opened mine up, found "sticky stuff", cleaned it off using awesomely handy eucalyptus oil, and it seems my problem is solved.

well they both heat things, right?!
Yes, but quite differently.

The oven delivers the heat through convection and thermal radiation equally from the outside.

The microwave delivers microwave radiation, which can penetrate materials and heats in spots from the inside.
It can only heat polarized molecules, which means it will heat the water in the food, but not the dish it's in.

Putting (pointed) metal objects in a microwave oven is a very unwise idea.

Apple fixes black status bar for x64 Windows!

It only took 4 years and 11.5 months but against all odds Apple finally found the will to fix Quicktime on x64 variants of Windows.

You can now play Quicktime movies embedded in websites and actually see the progress bar and volume controls! So be sure to run out and grab that historic 7.6.6 update!

What's next? Correct gamma support? We can only hope.

I never thought I'd see the day!

just got back from a gallery opening at the college I might be transferring to. their art school must be absolutely terrible at teaching painting/drawing because all of the art on the walls was pretty much terrible. somehow a guy got hosted in the gallery with a pencil drawing that was all disproportionate and wonky with terrible shading.

on the positive side, however, the sculpture work they had there was absolutely top notch. someone had a hornet made out of steel plates that was absolutely terrifying. definitely a better school in terms of sculpture.

and a few days ago my contact at said school offered to get me a talent grant to help me attend. definitely looking like I'm going to end up over there instead of where I am, but I am SERIOUSLY happy I came here first to learn drawing basics. cause seriously, those guys SUCK.

Sounds like their art schools could use a merger, taking the drawing/painting departments from your current school and the sculpture department from the new one.
