Okay, I'm fed up with all these individual threads about good things that have happened to people and bad things that have happened to people. It makes more sense to have two threads dedicated to anything that has happened (Pets, computer trouble, whatever) rather than filling the forum up with them. So, this thread is for anything good that happens to you. Consequently, all discussion of everyday things that you feel positive about should be discussed here.

NOTE: AndrewTaylor or thomasp, could you please sticky this thread and the other one? Obviously it's upto you, but if you would like to see OD organised a bit better with less repetitive threads, I think this could be the answer.

Enjoying the fact that my entire class bar three people (including me) dropped Maths after AS level, so my A2 maths class has a whole three people in.

Also the fact that my entire class bar six people (including me) dropped Physics after AS level, so my A2 physics class has a whole six people in.

Also the fact that I don't have to go to school until 1:30PM on Mondays now. And that's just for 2 hours of Computing. Woo.

A good way to fix that is to uninstall Norton Internet Security, then shred the files, then defrag, do a full format, then chop the CD into small pieces, grind into a fine powder and sprinkle over a bunsen burner flame.

Also it reads:

I don't see System 7 file format on there anywhere. I also need a program which can read System 7, one that's compatible with Mac OS (X or Classic).

We've got these old sounds from my childhood which we recorded on our old Performa downstairs, it's my siblings and me when we were like 3 years old. It would be excellent if I could grab a program which could convert System 7 into a modern readable file format, which could promptly be burned to CD. But to transfer the files, I need to put them on a floppy or ZIP disk, which , when formatted for System 7, is incompatible with Windows.

Then we could finally chuck the Performa, which is sitting in a corner and gathering dust.

Yes... but... creating computer games is hardly an "audio" purpose, now is it?

I think the ST was sort of industry-standard for making music on. I read that in an ST magazine, so obviously they were biased, but I think they at least mostly told the truth in magazines back then (Ah, happy days). It could do all mod files every bit as well as Amigas could, anyway, and they were the main thing Amiga enthusiasts would point out when they were claiming the Amiga was better for sound.

Yes. I so nearly hated that game...

It didn't help, of course, that I had to play with the non-Link clothes etc. since my brother had completed it and I didn't want to delete anyone, but about two thirds of the way through, everything clicked, and it was bloody impressive the way it was done. I'm convinced the Zelda series doesn't fit together at all, but frankly I don't care any more.

I live in Leeds. That's how I live every single day.

Edit: In fact, I was told to dial 999 this morning. By a bus.

Not the driver -- the bus has a recorded alarm system. It was "under attack" from a rather indignant looking thirteen year old.

Probably for you, but just because you had one bad experience (or maybe more, don't know) (mugged) do you really feel Halloween is the worst celebration in your opinion? Sorry to hear that btw

personally, i don't see anything wrong with the lighter side of halloween (FREE CANDY!). but the other side... well, like s2k said, it's nasty :p
here we don't have any trouble since halloween isn't a portuguese holiday and thus ppl couldn't care less about it, but there's always kids who go door-to-door in costumes to get FREE CANDY (hey, it's FREE CANDY, can you blame them?). personally, i find it humiliating, but again, it's FREE CANDY. still, being a kid is the time where yelling "i want candy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" at your parents works most of the times ;)

Well, lets see...

Easter: free chocolate. (And something about Jesus)
Christmas: Presents and Joy; bad TV (And something about Jesus)
Hallowe'en: Street crime; kids, palpably without costumes or tricks, trying to guilt you into giving them sweets* (And, in all probability, Ben's dad whining about how it's supposed to be a Pagan holiday if they're quite finished butchering it, thankyou very much -- though in fact, that probably ought to go for Christmas as well).
Bonfire Night: Street crime; fireworks that don't work; often hilarious stories about idiots being injured by holding lit fireworks. (Often these are combined into one big hilarious story) Parkin and toffee apples.
New Year's: Alcohol; staying up late for kids; bad TV.

I'd say Hallowe'en's definitely in the Bottom Two. I mean, it's rubbish, isn't it? I mean, sure you get some chocolate if you're young enough to be trick-or-treating, but if you're not its just annoying, and in any case the money you spend on the costume could buy a huge amount of sweets. I fully expect it to drift by one year and nobody will notice until Bonfire night and suddenly everyone will idly wonder what happened to it, but not really care.

One worse one, by rights, should be "Mischievous Night", but that never really got big enough to show up above the general background level of street crime. Not around here, anyway.

Don't want this to turn into a religious post (think of this as a positive event of myself explaining the nature of things) but here goes I'm catholic so I believe in God (I ignored Run's God FAQ thread) and Jesus

Here is what the holidays in a Canadian Catholic symbolize:

Easter - The Christian celebration commemorating the resurrection of Christ from the dead, after his crucifixion on Good Friday

Christmas - Birth of Jesus, but you are right about the presents and joy

Halloween - Our Pilgrim forefathers well knew of Halloween's occultic roots. In fact they banned celebrating Halloween in America. Halloween was not celebrated in this country until 1845. At that time multiplied thousands of Irish emigrants flooded into New York because of the Irish Potato Famine of 1845-46. They brought with them the old Druid holiday of Halloween. Gradually celebrating this day spread throughout the rest of the country.

Now, to understand Halloween better we must go even further back. I found that the original celebration was not called by its present name, Halloween. But, it began long before Christ among the ancient Celtic peoples (Britons, Gauls, Scots, and Irish). They observed the end of summer with sacrifices to SAMAN (Shamhain). He was "the lord of death and evil spirits". This marked the beginning of the Celtic New Year.

That's a British one, where we "celebrate" the failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament by blowing up millions of pounds in fireworks

I think we're the only country to ever celebrate treason and terrorism like this. Imagine if someone had suggested this kind of thing in America in '02. They'd have been executed, probably. Or held in camp X-Ray until everyone forgot they existed.

No doubt if someone had managed to prevent the (we've got to come up with a better name for 'em) September 11th Attacks, there would be as much celebration as we get on 5th November. And probably the burning of Osama bin Laden effegies.

On a semi-related note, my Grandad's birthday is on Bonfire Night. Which reminds me, I have to post his birthday card...

NB: Essentially for Americans, Bonfire Night is our July 4th, in that it's Excuse To Set Off Loads Of Fireworks Day. Typical Brits, we organise it in a month where the weather conditions could hardly be classed as "ideal"

hmmm... i don't think we (portuguese) have any day to set off fireworks. not that we need do, we (portuguese) set off fireworks in pretty much any occasion we consider special enough to. so, as if the noise of the highway and railway track next to my home weren't enough, i also get fireworks on any special occasion. so you can take it i can't get much sleep those times :p

Last night I got into a large fight with my best friend because he's really really ****ed off at both me and my girlfriend. He was mad at my girlfriend for a really goofy reason which i won't go into right now, and he was ****ed at me because i sided w/ her and not w/ him.

Pretty positive so far, huh?

I was a little nervous when I came to school this morning, but it couldn't have gone better. He wasn't angry at me or her at all. It was surprising, because he can be really high strung and overreactive at times. Knowing him, I expected him to do something like not talk to me for a week, but we were back to how we normally are. :D

However, because of the setup we've got (I'm on wireless), and the lousy, cheap (read: free) router/modem, I get the occasional connection drop, which is annoying for MSN/IRC.

I walked home from school today, and I had the sudden realization that if I completely block out thoughts of everyone in my life who is causing me stress, then the stress vanishes. I am now in one of the best ****ing moods i've been in in a long time. Plus, today marked the 4th week for me and my girlfriend. Oh yeah. My girlfriend puts me in a good mood, too, which is another contributing factor to my jollyness. At the moment, she seems to be the only person who completely accepts me for who i am.

Another positive occurance (also involving her): A few days ago, she and i were helping out at my church. We had finished w/ our current job, and we decided to go and sit in some hallway cause we didn't want to work anymore. Her mom was there helping, too, but she didn't konw that we had left. She wanted ellen (my gf) to be working the whole time. Then her mom decided to leave, and since she couldn't find us in her direct vicinity, she just took all of ellen's stuff, and left, furious at her. I gave ellen a ride home, and when she got home (i found all this out the next day), her mom asked her where she had been when she was looking for her. She (because her mom had wanted her to be working) said that she was working. Her mom instantly bombarded her w/ numerous questions on the details of her work, and she was like "you're lying to me!" so ellen was like "fine. i lied. I was sitting w/ kevin in the hallway." Of course, she thought that was a lie as well, so she's like "how can i trust you?" she then proceeded to give out the goofiest punishment ever. She said that to prove that ellen could be trusted, she had to keep her mom updated on basically every ****ing thing that goes on when she isn't with her parents by use of telephone. Doesn't sound so bad, but there's more: If she's somewhere where there isn't gonna be another parent (namely, anywhere that isn't in someone's house: movie, restaurant, any ****ing place you can imagine) then her parents had to be there. Picture that: Kevin and Ellen going dinner and a movie. How romantic. But wait. who are these 2 people following them around? Holy f***. it's her parents. All i can say is: that would suck something furious. Luckily, she talked to her mom and basically said "how the hell can you see if i'm being trustworthy with this goddamn plan? If you're right there all the time, why the hell would i do something untrustworthy?" she just said it in nicer words, and her parents let her off w/ being grounded for a week. This is especially good because the 2 of us are going ot a concert on december 4th, and if she still had her other punishment, then the deal that her parents set out for her was either she doens't go, or her parents go with us (shoot me now). But now it's all cool, and by sunday it'll be over.

If you didn't want to read that last paragraph, you don't have to, but i just felt like i needed to say that. i'm just really happy right now.

I think she's ungrounded tomorrow, too, and my parents owe me $15, so maybe i can do something w/ her.

Another funny thing that most people probably wouldn't see as a positive event, but i jsut found it so stupidly hilarious that i'm putting it in this thread:

I was playing around w/ a knife in my brother's bedroom, and i was trying to stab it into the end of a pencil (God knows why), but it all backfired when the knife just sliced off a bit of the pencil which flew across the room. The knife then proceeded to stick itself about half an inch into the tip my thumb, and I began exclaiming loudly "oh ****! oh ****! oh ****!" I ran downstairs to wash it out, and my mom was like "what happened?" So i told her that i "cut myself on some piece of metal in brian's room." Not quite a lie, but i also told her that i didn't know what peice of metal, because she always yells at me for playing with knives.

I thought it was pretty funny, except that it sorta hurt. :p

Ok, time for another Zero Seriously Delayed Reaction:I'm convinced the Zelda series doesn't fit together at all, but frankly I don't care any more. The reason the Zelda series doesn't fit together for the most part is because it isn't supposed to. At 800*600 it looks quite crappy, and any higher and I'm in the land of 60Hz. (although 1600*1200 is sweet)

Yeah. Although any 3D graphics card will be able to do better refresh rates than the monitor, so generally it's the monitor that's the only limiting factor, on a gaming machine at least.

And yes, the CRTs can handle very heigh frequencies, at least in theory. On flat panels, espetialy LCD based, it is another story. I have a fairly recent LCD flatpanel, and it still calls me bad names if I try to set it to heigher than 1024x768 at any descent frequency.

Er. Even if you're playing Invisible War, surely it's the monitor that limits the maximum refresh rate you can get. I can use dxdiag to force it to 100hz at 1024, and if you're just commenting on the horrible engine, if I throw it down to 640x480, and possibly lower shadow detail, I can get up to the 120Hz my monitor can do at 640...

You've confused me now. D:

my monitor can go up to 85Hz on 1024x768 or lower. higher resolutions are limited to 60Hz.
also, my card can go up to 2048x1536, though monitor only goes up to 1280x1024.

SargeMcCluck
17 Nov 2004, 23:12
My primary monitor can do 1600x1200@75Hz, 1280x960@80Hz, 1152x864@85Hz, 1024x768@100Hz and anything below 1024 @ 120Hz.
My secondary is standard, so 1152x864@75Hz, 1024x768@85Hz, 800x600@100Hz and 640x480@120Hz.

I usually run both at 1152, so 85Hz on this monitor, and 75Hz on the other one.

I believe Ben has the ATI AIW Radeon 9000 64MB

One positive event I've had was in a dream.

Similar to the magazine PC Gamer, the forumers came together and made their own PC Magazine, Geek World.

(I was flipping to one of our pages to the review section)

To the right side of the page were our picture and a little description of what we are doing:

Everett Lamb - Aside from playing Half Life 2 and Counter Strike source, I've been fairly busy reviewing vga cards and deciding which particular one to get, also at the office, I tend to ignore Alex's laughing at me.

Alex Milburn - My game of choice this month and year would have to be, hands down Half Life 2 I find the enjoyment and entertainment in its game play but also playing friends online, speaking of which I laugh at Ev in the games due to the fact he sucks at Counter Strike: Source.

Ben Paddon - Am I the only one who does not to bother nor touch Half Life 2? geeze, talk about hype and over dominating. If you are wondering what I've been up to, I got my hands on a certain game which I'll get to refer to it as the sim gem of simulation gaming, can you guess what it is kids? Right, it's The Sims 2. In the game I managed to get robbed, got into a fight, my children neglect me and for the finale managed to succeed in getting a fast food job, ah the joy of gaming.

Konstantin K - I'm not really much of a PC gamer, you can refer to me as the hardware informator. Besides that had been spending my time building PCs for colleges and myself, if only I can get my hands on a GeForce 6800 I'll be in paradise instead of working here at minimum wage.

Dan Albano - Was the first to test out the Guild Wars beta and oh man talk about a sweet game, I'm taking about a similarity of getting a million dollar check in the mail sweet, believe me it feels the same. I've enjoyed kicking so much ass my inner geek is in glee.

Ian Dowe - I'm known around the office as the beaver lad (well, you are - Ev) but anyways just needed to let that out. I've been supporting the truck load of free games coming in here, you know... Half Life 2, Guild Wars, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and more and know what? They’re all mine! Mine! *insert evil laughter*

There was two more people of the staff but sadly forgotten whom they are, sorry.

I finally saw Kiara and Avry on AIM at the same time. Theoretically, Avry could download a program that would allow her to use two different AIM accounts simultaneously on the same computer, but I doubt she knows of any such program's existence, and that's way too elaborate for her. Yeah... As long as we're going on about relationships... You guys are really gonna think I'm an idiot.

Kiara... Yeah, she's real. She's the real Kyira. I'm certain of it. I finally have proof. It's possible that the proof isn't proof, but very unlikely.

I finally saw Kiara and Avry on AIM at the same time. Theoretically, Avry could download a program that would allow her to use two different AIM accounts simultaneously on the same computer, but I doubt she knows of any such program's existence, and that's way too elaborate for her. She'd be much more likely just to pretend AIM was broken on one end or the other.

So, yeah, it's real this time, I'm sure of it. I have a girlfriend in New York.
Actually, AIM 5.7 and up allows "linked screennames", which lets a person use two screennames at the same time. There is a button which allows someone to appear offline (they call it "invisible") next to each screenname.

I'd advise, at the very least, pinging her IP with a tracer software like [NeoTrace Express (http://www.networkingfiles.com/PingFinger/Neotraceexpress.htm)]. To obtain her IP over AIM, use Netstat (see [this thread (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18795&highlight=aim)] for more information).

Exactly. If you can't figure out how to work the software, Zero, just send me her screen name, and I'll run the trace for you.

Then again, this has happened when I was 16 for 1 month, and when I was 17 for 3 months, so I'm used to living on my own for quite a bit now. But still, woo!

Hehe. When I was on my own for a month for a 16 it was "WOOOOOOOOO!" and great parties.
When I was on my own for 3 months at 17 the first month was "WOOOOOOOO!" and great parties. The second month was "ugh, so much mess, so much to do and clean". The third month was "Crap, I have exams coming up in a month, crap crap crap!".
Now, at 18, it's "I've got exams coming up in a month, crap, crap, crap!"

So no wild parties this year. And I had one a week ago anyway, and I'm still not fully recovered. Ugh.

Heh. As I said, I only live with my Mum, and I'm pretty much independent. I cook etc when I'm on my own. The only difference is that when she's not here there's more space for other people, no-one wanting me to turn loud music down, and I have to clean the entire house instead of just the mess I make. (Dusting, hoovering, etc).

Living on your own is so overrated though. I'd much rather live with someone I like (roommate, girlfriend or whatever) than live on my own. It gets so damn dull. IMO anyway.

Maybe you dreamt that because a dog was biting on your arm. They've done studies and it often works that way around.

That's always interested me. Your dream always seems to blend perfectly with the little bit of reality, often with a big run-up to the actual thing happening. Is this just my imagination, do I get a delayed sense of the world outside, or is it just some kind of paranormal premonition thingy they're always talking about on LivingTV?

Actually, that happens to me too, but there's no time difference between the sound and the dream, I know this because it happens when someone is trying to wake me up, or when the alarm goes on, and I wake up seconds after that, so I can tell there wasn't really a time difference

Ah, but how many drivers did you annoy by either driving incredibly slowly, or stalling.

When I was learning, I occasionally stalled on purpose at busy traffic lights, especially if someone had been tailgating me. My instructor even threatened to stall the car for me on a couple of occasions :D

Enough:p. Atleast 10.

I only stalled a couple of times and that was when there was either no-one behind me or when it was the very beginning of the lesson and I was learning how to start and stop the car.

i too am taking driving lessons, and have not crashed as of yet. ;)
and assuming i pass my liscence test, i'll have my liscense in about a month or 2. :D

i saw a pretty stupid driving event today when in downtown chicago. a car was making a right turn, and they made it as if there was absolutely no curb at all, when in fact, the curb was about a foot high (higher than most). They rode up the ramp where the pedestrians can enter the street, until their front right wheel was up on the curb. then, instead of backing up and trying again, they just kept going forward until the wheel fell off the other end. the curb was higher than the bottom of their car, so their 2 right wheels were up in the air. the last i saw of them, they were sitting in their car, helplessly trapped in their own stupid mistake. there were a few people around helping them, though, so i think they probably got out fine. :p

you may be sick of hearing about it, but i'm just gonna give you guys a final final update on the ellen situation.

it turns out it wasn't a lack of sleep and stuff, but i suspected that.

she was sorta acting a little wierd again last night, so i called her today, and we had a long talk on the phone. she told me that she had had a dream where she went back to her first boyfriend without telling me. she has been feeling guilty about it all week, even though she didn't actually do anything. we had a long talk about our relationship, and what we were doing right and wrong, and stuff like that. probably the best talk we've ever had. we talked about how neither of us wanted to be apart right now, but whenever it did happen, we wanted it to happen on good terms, and still be lifelong friends no matter what. i told her i wouldn't throw away my friendship with her for anything. apparantly she thought that was sweet. :)

now the 2 of us are closer than we've ever been before, and i'm a lot happier than i have been this whole week. :D

strangely enough, it's also been 2 months to the day that we started going out, so we're gonna have some sort of 2 month celebration thingy on friday (busy today).

i'm really really happy right now. she still loves me.

it was pretty funny, too. she pointed out that we hadn't made out in a while, and i was like "yup." and then she paused and she was like "wow. i really want to make out with you right now." i thought it was pretty funny, and i started laughing.

plus, now she says she feels she can talk to me about a lot more, and be a lot more open.

i'm just really happy. :D

As paradoxal as it sounds, it is actualy something you need to think about. It's not easy, but you have to try to look back at the good times you had with her and feel good about the fact that you had them, without feeling bad about the fact that you don't have them anymore. Think about it, even if you knew it was going to end this way, you'd still go through with the whole thing, wouldn't you?
