While we're on the subject I have 2 conditional offers from Leeds and York, 1 interview at Sheffield, I effectively turned Nottingham down by saying I didn't want to go to their "group discussion" day. And I still haven't had anything from Birmingham - it's been 3 months since I sent off my UCAS Application. Sure, if they want to wait until they have all the offers in, that's their decision but some people won't be able to go on the day they set. For a start I have to go to Leeds and Sheffield during half term. No doubt they'll be really annoying and invite me on one of those 2 days...

And that's got absoloutely nothing to do with the fact that aplications are down 40% because of the introduction of top-up fees.:p

Transliterating "cøøl" to German, it'd be "köhl".

How is "ø" pronounced anyways? I can't find a good description...

'Ø' isn't like any Russian letters. It's like a German 'ö' or a French 'eux' and almost like an English 'uh'.

Here's a more accurate description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ø

Amongst the English vowels it sounds the most like the "ir" in "bird" or the "ur" in "hurt".

Note that this is using British English (without pronouncing the 'r').

Another guy at the party thought I should go for it but I'm not really sure how I should. I'd rather meet her in person than text her but with the holidays, I'd have to come up with an excuse to meet her. I positively loathe the phone and everything about it. When I grow up, I'm going to have a cell phone (and no real phone), and leave the cell phone on 30 minutes a day. If you really need to tell me something OVER THE PHONE, you can do it then. I would much rather you type an e-mail or contact me over messenger.

Nuts to that. Mobile phones are the best things since personal music players.

I mean, do you people never go out? You can't go out without a mobile unless you plan it with military presicion. Say you're in the middle of town a bit early and the place you were supposed to meet up is really full. You phone your friend and tell them somewhere else. The bus is late. Phone your friend from the bus stop and tell them there's no need to rush. You meet a girl in a bar and want to put her number somewhere that you won't put through the washing machine before you find it. Stick it in your mobile. Even if you can find a payphone, your mobile has all the numbers in it.

Your phone can make food arrive at your door. It can summon taxis. It can do all kinds of wonderful things.

I can't imagine how you could live without a phone.

Dan, regarding keeping people you're not gonna' call in your phonebook: Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. If you keep them in your phonebook you'll know who it is when they call and can ignore it! Genius! Something useful out of laziness at last.

I saw The Divine Comedy in Sheffield last night. Very good it was.

Of course, it did involve standing two feet to the right of my best friend (who I'm pretty sure I am hopelessly in love with), three feet from her boyfriend (who introduced us, long before they were a couple) and five feet in front of Neil Hannon who was singing "Our Mutual Friend" (which is of course one of mine and her all-time favourite songs, and is all about someone introducing him to a girl, them getting along really well, and then her going off with the person who introduced them). That was something of an awkward moment, but then I'm more or less used to those by now, so I have decided not to care. It was a great night, and as such it goes in the Positive thread.

Oh God, so many thoughts, so many thoughts, and I don't know what to make of them all.

I don't know, but lately I've felt some sort of kindness, sweetness from Katie, and I don't know what to make it of. But part of my mind has been telling me that there's something there, and that maybe I have a future after all.

Today. Well, today, Katie and John who is, or at least was or something - I really don't know and that's kinda complicated, but anyways, I witnessed Katie and John basically not getting along well. It escalated to John insulting her, her walking away, and John basically trying to convince her not to do so. And, well, I dunno. So many thoughts. I have a feeling they won't be together much longer. If they still are. I, fact, I haven't seen them together in ages, and when I do I feel a sort of awkwardness - like Katie doesn't want to be around him - and I don't know. So many thoughts. God do I love her. But anyways.

I felt like a had a plan, like a had a method to what I was going to say, but it just kinda fell apart when I tried to express it.

So yeah, I don't know what this means. But hopefully possibly it means what I hope it means. So many thoughts, so many thoughts...

Wow, strange. Sarah told me she was upset because James told her his priorities were: Revision, Games, Her. As Sarah is moving to Norfolk, she's wondering if he can be bothered with a long distance relationship. Personally I hope she dumps him. Not for me, but for herself. He's the sort of person that, if they get together, will lay around in bed until the afternoon, then go on the computer for the rest of the day while Sarah feeds him and does everything - and she doesn't deserve that, she deserves to be appreciated.

I certainly wouldn't say it's a major fall out but it's a hope. The last thing I want her to do is waste her life on him. Then again if I interfere, it could damage our friendship.

Because it's no way to treat someone you love. That's basically what I do, apart from going into town or going to see friends. But if I were in a relationship I would spend as much time as possible with her. A relationship means more to me than going on the computer.

With luck, that's about 70 marks and 7 alphas. Doesn't quite compensate for my previous two exams, but another good one tomorrow and I should be all right.

In a confusing turn of events it turns out that my Harpo comics have been published.

Aparantly the students got their act together and have put out 2 issues without me knowing, with two of my comics in each.

I'm officialy a published cartoonist! I'm right up there with the rubissh strip that ran for 2 issues in my schools monthly newsletter.

It's wierd seeing my stips actualy printed in an actual magazine. And what a magazine it is! Printed in glorious black and white with an illustrious blue cover that proclaims "Encounters- Canterbury Christchurch University's premier creative writing magazine". Or words to that effect. Come to think of It I'm not 100% sure if the title is 'Encounters', But I'm sure it begins with an E.

In anycase, If you ever find yourself in canterbury why not track down one of the 3 or 4 newsagents that sell the magazine? For that 50p investment you'll get at least 20 pages of the finest short stories and poetry by unknown (and not all crap) authors and, of course, a couple of low quality and mostly incomprehensable comic strips about talking cats.

I'm a little bit pleased with myself, if you havent noticed.

Went down to EB to pick up Battallion Wars yesterday (they have a deal going, only in Canada, where every day 2 particular games come on sale for $10). Soon as I got there, noticed Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, and Starfox 64 sitting in the bargain bin for $15 each -- got the first two (since I've played the crap out of Starfox and I need to save cash for Donkey Konga and Jungle Beat which are coming on the $10 sale in a few days).

Battallion Wars is pretty great -- picture Medal of Honor meets traditional Advance Wars. The friendly AI positively sucks, though, and there are times when the lock-on system will drive you out of your head. Worth the $10 at the very least.

As for the other two, I don't think I should have to tell you how much ass they kick. :p

Actually, their recent decline in overall quality has had nothing whatsoever to do with that: the best creative members of their team, the people who created Banjo-Kazooie and Conker and such, split off from Rare to work elsewhere in the games industry (I seem to recall one of them was one of the lead designers on Timesplitters). So while they still take forever to make their games, and they still have the edgy English humor, and they still push the graphics envelope that extra bit, the games just don't have the traditional Rare quality of superb entertainment value.

1. Pakistan will be getting some of their best bowlers back from injury for this match, so it would be cool if we could beat them then as well.

2. As it stands in our recent home/away tussle, the scoreline is 2-2 with two draws, so it's a decider of sorts.

Funny story about microwaves: Maplin sell a cheapo microwave leakage tester that is so sensitive it can inform you of the fact your microwave will likely start to leak microwaves some time in the next thousand years. As a preliminary measure, its beeping signals indicate it's time to take a trip to Currys. However it seems all Currys' microwaves leak. What would you do if you hadn't spent that tenner on our little blue plastic box, eh?

What's wrong with a saucepan on a hob?

We all love cookin' when we're cookin' on gas!

It takes longer and makes more washing.

I mean, you could do that. It's not a major problem to use a pan. But why bother, if you're just reheating something?

I remember when everyone survived without a microwave.

I also remember a golden era when microwaves had buttons on the front and proper, reliable electronic timers instead of these stupid mechanical clockwork-looking you-turn-the-dial-and-it-ignores-you-and-does-whatever-it-wants affairs. Ah, those were the days.My microwave has an electronic LED timer. :)

Well, I did quite nicely for three years with just a toaster, kettle and fridge for company.

(As food-related electrical appliances that is).

Although I did use the bar microwave a few times for those little pastry pizza things...Oh yes, I used the oven in our staircase kitchen a few times to make proper pizzas, as well.

But why bother, if you're just reheating something?

Because it's a more wholesome approach to cooking. It's a less lazy approach and, believe it or not, food tastes better when it's cooked properly.

I'd rather take my chances. There's many more ways of messing up the food when using an oven than a microwave. :p

food tastes better when it's cooked properly.
I'm not disputing that, but I am disputing that food which has already been cooked tastes better if you put it in a pan on a hob and do nothing but heat it than if you put it in a microwave oven and do nothing but heat it. Hell, you could wrap it in tinfoil and put it on a fire or in a dishwasher and it would have the same effect. It's just heat.

If it tastes different to you I'd bet it's purely placebo flavour.

It tastes better when you heat it on a pan than on a microwave, it really does.
But I'm too damn lazy.

Andrew, I was going to use that exact same word ("placebo"). You are absolutely right there. The change is physical, not chemical, in the case of reheating.

I don't see how that's an issue so long as it's yummy!

It's a while since I've owned a microwave so I could be wrong about this, but reheating, say, a sausage in the microwave rather than under the grill will not yield as good a flavour.

I guess it comes down to what you're reheating and how you reheat it.

Oh, and there's definitely something different about coffee when it's been reheated in a microwave. It's just wrong.

Paper plates seem to help some though...

AndrewTaylor
18 Aug 2006, 00:48
I think as much as anything that's because when water evaporates from food in a pan it just floats off into the room. Microwaves are small and that can't happen.

Vader
18 Aug 2006, 11:52
So you admit that food reheated in a microwave is soggier than reheated using an oven or hob?

So, there is a difference in texture and flavour?

So, reheating food in the microwave is rubbish.

Vader 1-0 Microwaves

AndrewTaylor
18 Aug 2006, 13:14
Well, it can be, but the microwave itself isn't to blame for that. I mean, if you reheat a leg of lamb in a pan all you'll achieve is scorching the outside without heating the centre at all -- that doesn't make pans rubbish. You want an oven for that. But if you put sauce in the oven you waste an hour and achieve nothing you couldn't do with a pan, and that doesn't make the oven rubbish. Besides, often you want to keep the moisture in something when you reheat it.

What tool you should use depends what job you want it to do, but yes, I freely admit there is a difference between microwaves and other methods that I hadn't considered before.

Vader
18 Aug 2006, 14:31
Mirowaves are just lazy. There is nothing you can do in a microwave which you cannot do using other cooking methods.

In fact, there is nothing I can think of which is better off being reheated in a microwave than using a more conventional cooking method. It may be faster for some things but it certainly isn't better... ever.

Faster is a type of better. The result might not be better, but the process can be.

Vader
18 Aug 2006, 17:01
but the process is just a means to an end. It is the end result which is important.

A crude example of this is instant coffee. It's faster, sure, but it taste rubbish compared to a percolated cup of Kenyan AA. I'd rather enjoy the coffee than have a cup sooner.

Is it a microwave meal? If so then you are wrong. No microwave meal I ever had was tastier than a freshly prepared version.

No, I know that, and I'm the same way usually. But if it tasted the same, faster would be better. That's all I meant.

My stars, you have no idea what you're missing. Kraft dinner is basic smallish elbow macaroni in a box with a little packet of cheese flavouring powder, and it's great. You can either boil it, drain the water, pour on the cheese powder and mix it in (melts really quickly so it's easy), or you can put it in the microwave in a bowl of water, heat it for [x], take it out, stir it, heat it, take it out, stir it, etc., and I think there was something else you had to do as well.. It's really stupidly complicated for a microwave meal which is why I practically never do it that way, but it does at least taste different when done in the microwave. Inferior, certainly not, but superior, I'm not sure.

Lex
19 Aug 2006, 06:01
Yeah, microwaving KD has always tasted much better for me. It may be because I tend to eat much of the pasta during the stirring phases, making the cheese-to-pasta ratio much-more ideal. However, I'm not sure.
