Well, the lesson I learned was that if they insult you it's because they can and that you should not dare answering back. Not sure if this is what I was supposed to learn, but if you didn't know, the infraction system is pretty generic.

I think that the way it works is that if a mod says something with an offensive tone, calls you names and then you proceed to answer in the same style you get what is known as an "infraction for spamming", whilst if you literally spam the forums with irrelevant information you don't really get much of an infraction.
Not sure if this is working as intended, it's from my own experience.

Whatever Andrew or Thomas did, it must have been hilarious. Any chance of seeing it?

my god....has yakuza never even HEARD of an online game? I mean, yeah, custom rules happen everywhere, but you'd think he'd realize that worms is no longer played hardly at all in any normal scheme.

I mean, if I didn't already know that and tried to play wormnet, all I would see is "shoppa" "proper" and other such and just click one randomly cause there was no alternative.

But seriously, he doesn't want anyone here to like him. He just expects his points to be treated at least equally despite his history and the manner in which they are put. Yeah, when it comes to knowledge about Worms and online communities he certainly knows a damn sight more than I do and I'd say that he's probably somewhere high up with being one of the best. He convinced me about stuff before in #worms when he argues in a calmer manner and I certainly respect his opinion.

But it's the way he says it. I just find it really difficult to look past. Even when he's right I sometimes can't take it seriously at all. Which is a shame.

Yup, that's the heart of the issue. Even if you excuse it in part because he's Spanish and in part because he's been around Worms for a really long time, he still crosses the line far too easily. I know that and he knows it, he even sometimes tries not to do it, although obviously he'd never admit it. But eventually a Plasma comes into the thread and it all goes to ****, heh.

To be honest, most of you guys give him enough of a chance and for the most part don't disregard his saner and more informed posts before even reading them. It's a decent status quo that keeps him on the safe side of getting banned and everyone else mildly entertained. But I guess for him to want to get involved and respected here, everyone would have to treat the contents of his posts this fairly, and that's just not going to happen on a large forum like this.

"Your petty rules of morality and ethics do not apply to me, for I am a god!"

I dunno. It seems to be the axiom by which Plasma lives his life, and if you take that as an axiom then his answer does follow logically.

EDIT: that reminds me, is there a technical difference between morality and ethics, or are they just two words for the same thing?

MtlAngelus

Quick, someone tell me what kind of warped logic is he trying to pull here.

I suppose it's because of the purpose he uses that for. People who have tried to eradicate the Grox have run into the issue of having systems that are out of reach, which I doubt was intentional and is probably an effect of the slightly random placement of systems. So it's more of something to overcome this limitation of the game.

I think there is in some contexts (ethics involves committees), but not in general parlance.

Yes, but the post was about WormNAT not working, implying that the person cannot host (rather than WormNET not working, implying the person can't get onto WormNET at all). Moreover, the person mentions an event in ingame chat.

Maybe Valve should use this as their sales pitch for the Source engine.

If im gonna make worms 5 i'll just probably use the source engine
Reason?
benefits:
easy to use
physics are tweakable like valve did to portal
online multiplaying is easy
smooth particles are now available (they are demonstrated in team fortress 2)
turrets guns already pressent

disbenefits:
its up to the developer to make the gameplay (its up to team17 on how to pressent turn based gameplay at the souce enigne)
weapon scripts also the same thing as being (i know some ideas for easy scripting for some of the weapon physics)
destructible maps and arenas are not yet pressent at the source engine(needs the game developers to tweak the source engine heavily [you can review the frost bite engine fo some reference])

other ideas: i would make also a ps3 version because its sixaxis can help on some weapons that features control (super sheep parachute jetpack)

Well, I make an hyphotesis, that could be the most logical. Which main event is there in August? Simple, the Gamescon 2010 in Cologne, the 17th August to be exact.
In my opinion, seen that this game is both a return to PC games by T17 and they're coming back with 2D, they'll be there at 100%. And guess what? They're revealing all details right there, few days before the launch of game, as they did with Alien Breed Impact for PC.
Why Gamescon you think? Well, there is the cybermania games competition and the final tournaments of QuakeLive (rated as one of the best free online FPS), where an Italian like me is a finalist.

Remember...this is just only an opinion.

Emphasis mine.

What's wrong with the explosions in WR? Additionally, the new physics are more attractive to me than the old, unrealistic ones.

WR is more casual concerning its customisation. It's actually pretty limited compared to Armageddon, however it's fine to me - the simpliest mode, the common deathmatch, is what I play Worms for, after all. WA is completely characterized by the Ninja Rope anyway, isn't it?

Or? Which of these three items, do you think, is the one used most in WA?

a) Bazooka
b) MB Bomb
c) >>Ninja Rope!!<<

I love it when people try to use the "it has more realistic physics" arguments with worms games - what part of blowing an annelid up with a bazooka or sheep or pigeon is realistic!

I think we lost the realism argument somewhere around the part where worms were given eyebrows.... or eyes....

I don't get why he suddenly thinks that WA's physics are unrealistic. (Unrealistic in the Worms universe)

In fact, they're basically the same.
Projectiles have parabolic trajectories, the center of gravity is at the bottom of the screen, etc.
That's how it always worked since 1995. And even in earlier artillery type games.

The only thing that has improved physics-wise are the bounces of grenades which now work correctly, as opposed to WA's pixellated ricochets.
Although, this good feature got completely messed up by the ridiculous collisions/friction tweaking, which causes ludicrously looking grenade shots and spot-on sitters. :P

Other than that it's just merely an issue of getting used to different engines and settings therein.
Nothing about one engine being more "unrealistic".

Xinos
29 Jan 2011, 16:17
Could it be that the explosions sound more realistic in Reloaded?
They feel a lot punchier, could be because of improved sample quality though..

Lex
29 Jan 2011, 18:28
"Realistic" is not a term which can or should be applied to Worms. Of course a game where the explosions appear below the actual point of detonation is unrealistic. That's what makes it fun. I bet Thurbo's never heard of "explosion bias".

Xinos, what you're noticing is the obnoxious screen-shaking associated with explosions in that game. In case you're wondering, no, it's not a good thing.

By "lately" do you mean "since 2001"?

I mean, I admire their attempt to resuscitate Alien Breed, but in doing so they've completely neglected the "shoot 'n' explore" aspects of the original, opting instead to go with a "Go here! Okay, now go here! Now go back there again! Now here! There! Back to A! U-turn, u-turn!" style of gameplay that is so incredibly, remarkably dull.

The only good Worms game that's come out in the last decade has been the DS version of Worms Open Warfare 2, which was developed by someone else and built around the W2/WA/WWP game engine.

Squirminator2k is true.

Squirminator2k

Here's the problem - Team17 were one of the leading developers for the Amiga back in the 90s, with more critical hits than flops. In the early-to-mid 90s they dabbled in the PC market by publishing Epic's SilverBall and allowing third-party ports of games like Alien Breed and Superfrog (ports that, by the way, are terrible - Superfrog for MS-DOS cannot actually be completed), but they didn't properly enter the PC market themselves until 1995 with the release of Worms - a game that, by the way, was co-produced by East Point Software, who worked on the PC prot of Superfrog and the GameBoy/SuperNES/MegaDrive versions of Worms.

Since then it feels rather a lot like they've been playing catch-up.

They got very lucky with Worms 2 which did a very good job of implementing the sort of tweakability that PC gamers loved making use of at the time as well as an exceptionally well-implemented online mode. But things started to turn sour as Worms Armageddon went into development. It may be the strongest game in the series, but it's not without its flaws - crippled tweaking of settings, an ambitious but ultimately flawed online ranking system, and, ugh, a single player mode that must be played in order to unlock stuff.

Online play in Team17 titles since then has been a hellish nightmare, and it seems absolutely baffling that something so integral to modern gaming seems to be such a difficult thing for the company to wrap its head around. From the broken GameSpy implementation in WOrms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem right the way through to Worms Reloaded's incredible delays between turns and unnecessary pauses before and after crate drops.

And lest we forget the titles that they've put out in between Worms games. While Lemmings for the PSP/PS2 was, in my opinion, a huge success for the developer, other titles such as Army Men: Major Malfunction and Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust have been... well, less great. I once asked Martyn Brown about Major Malfunction and his attitude was that it paid the bills and got them the funding to develop W4M and Worms XBLA (my memory of that conversation is fuzzy at best, so apologies if this is an inaccurate representation of Spadge's view of the game). That may well be the case, but the quality of the game is so unashamedly poor for a developer that could do no wrong in the eyes of so many not 15 years prior. It's remarkable.

So what next for Team17? As I've said, I admire their attempts to revive old franchises and to breathe new life into Worms after the damage done by the 3D entries in the series, but they seem to be content just being adequate. They used to be so much better, and it feels like they used to hold themselves to a higher standard.

I've been a fan of their games for most of my life. The old Team17 logo with the orbital ring around it is forever burned in my memory, connected to so many brilliant moments with my dad, my friends, and even just buggering about on my own on the Amiga. But this last decade... the company just feels broken. Whatever soul or spirit they may have had in the 90s vanished long ago.

I haven't really been playing much in the way of Worms games lately - I had WA, but that was only v3.0. Worms 3D and WFUS were fair cracks at the 3D whip (I never tried W4 though), and WFUS did have an interesting quirkiness to it. I have however bought the two iPhone versions of Worms. While the original was tending more towards Worms 1, they really did an excellent job on Worms 2 Armageddon on the iPhone. It's not dissimilar to worms of the olden days, I think, and is a pretty good game for a mobile platform.

Personally I quite like the new Alien Breed. Despite the more linear nature, there's still plenty of helpful stuff you can find if you bother to search for every nook and cranny, it's evolved a lot since the old days while staying true to the original, it's extremely challenging (even in co-op) so every shot counts, and it's still got a huge level of polish for a console port that's barely 10 bucks. I'm really satisfied with the team's work and response on that one, specially during the beta.

Worms Reloaded, well, erased all my saves during a Steam Cloud mishap. :p But Worms has always just been another fun multiplayer game I can play with friends, and it still does that just fine (and Steam is a huge improvement for setting up games). I don't really feel it's that great or that terrible and I don't care either.

30 Jan 2011, 16:24
I agree with what S2K is saying completely. It's hard to understand how the broken parts of the game can still be broken in with every new installment of the game. The flaws are so obvious, and it's just stressful to see them get ignored over and over. The production needs to be absolutely solid in today's market of small download-able games, people have shorter attention spans than ever, and it's those small annoying issues that make you not want to come back to a game. Worms may have been synonymous with quality once, but reputation only lasts so long.

I think his point is nobody really cares about a game title like "Worms 2: Armageddon", besides being pedantic over it referencing "Worms Armageddon". Which is not true. You could be pedantic that it references "Worms 2" too. Or that it referencess "Worms". Or that it references ":", used in a wide multitude of games. The options are endless.

Well, I was a WR beta tester too.
I became frustrated though, as many annoying bugs have been acknowledged by T17, but never patched to this day. :(

E.g. sheep getting detonated by space while you're on the rope, which makes roping to safety in your 5 sec retreat impossible, since you immediately detach, and in most cases end up in your own sheep explosion.

Genndy Tartakovsky is my all-time favourite animator. Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack and Star Wars Clone Wars are ingenious.
(Oh, I see he has a new one called "Sym-Bionic Titans". Gotta check that out!)

I do also like other animators that have a very similar, if not identical style, e.g. Craig McCracken, John McIntyre, Rob Renzetti or Chris Saviano (and many more of Hanna-Barbera and Cartoon Network).
They all contributed a lot to my favourite series like Powerpuff Girls, 2 Stupid Dogs/Secret Squirrel or Johnny Bravo.

I just like that kind of 1990s animation style.
