Can you solve my puzzle before The Amazing Jamjack? (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=612045&postcount=48)

Ohh! I love logic puzzles.

let's see...

A1=A2/2=A3/4
A2=2A1=A3/2
A3=4A1=2A2

A3-25=3(A2-25)
A3-25=3A2-75

So 4A1-25=6A1-75
2A1=50
A1=25

And if A1+X=3A3-75 (where X=Value of health crate)

A1+X=12A1-75

Then X=11A1-75
=275-75
=200.

So there was 200 health in the crate.:D

I think.:-/

No, the following is the 'Scottish Sheep Joke'

A mathematician, a physicist, and an engineer were traveling through Scotland when they saw a black sheep through the window of the train. "Aha," says the engineer, "I see that Scottish sheep are black."
"Hmm," says the physicist, "you mean that at least one Scottish sheep is black."
"No," says the mathematician, "all we know is that there is at least one sheep in Scotland, at least one side of which looks black from here!"

An astronomer, a physicist and a mathematician are on a train in Scotland.

The astronomer looks out of the window, sees a black sheep standing in a field, and remarks "How odd. Scottish sheep are black."
"No, no, no!" says the physicist. "Only some Scottish sheep are black."
The mathematician rolls his eyes at his companions' muddled thinking and says, "In Scotland, there is at least one field, containing at least one sheep, at least one side of which is black".

Yeah we shouldn't be arguing about this because there is no way we are going to change eachother's opinions and we are both going to think the other an idiot for their belief

And I come to this forum to post things like "i listened to the microphones today" and "that's a funny cat picture" not trying to justify a school of thought I don't even subscribe to

Okay this is not stupidity on the forum, but I still need to vent this out.

So this customer today calls because his line is suspended because he had a past due balance, and wanted me to reactivate his line and he said he would pay in a week or two or something. But I coulnd't activate it because the balance was a bit way too high, way above my limitation to give temporary credits. Also because we are not allowed to give temporary credits to reactivate a line when it's a non-paid disconnect, unless it's a life or death emergency.

So I told him so.

He then proceeded to complain that we are wasting his time, because yesterday he had called, and was told to go to the store. He went to the store, and they told him:
"Yeah sure, just pay us $25 and we'll reconnect your line."
So he paid $25 that were never posted in the acc, and his line was never reconnected. Someone else had already credited him those $25 on the account before me, so that was done with.

So anyway, we are wasting his time. We. Because we LIED to him at the store.
Ok, sounds about right. Except, that the guy has called around 12 freaking times in the past 4 days, and the answer was allways the same: "WE CANNOT REACTIVATE YOUR LINE, SIR".
So why the **** does he go about saying we are wasting his time? He is the one that, despite being told it cannot be done, keeps calling again and again, wasting his own time and our time too, only to keep getting the same answer. And then he gets lied to by a guy at the store, he just buys that rather OBVIOUS lie, and then complains. Seriously. The worst part is that I cannot point out to him that he is the one wasting his own time... and I have to "apologize" for something that is his own ****ing fault.

In short, I love my job. Yes.

In chronological order: A rep on the phone probably got fed up with the customer, and just refered him to the store to go complain there, even tough there is no way in hell he would get help at the store. Then, the guy at the store totally stole $25 from him and told him his line would be reactivated with that. After that, some other rep who got called by the customer about an hour or so before me gave him a $25 credit for this issue.

I thank god every day I don't work front desk.

and btw, we also have a VIP membership club thing, so after stealing large amounts of money from drunk people, they'll come up to the front desk and start flashing their cards to be sure we know exactly how important they are, because everyone knows that being a VIP makes rooms and money appear out of thin air.

incidentally, don't EVER go anywhere and get a VIP card and then think that anyone in the place actually gives a **** that you're a VIP.

In short, I love my job. Yes.

I used to get calls like that all the time when I worked at NTL. The only difference is I was allowed to be honest. I had a lot of calls that went along these lines:

Me: "Hi, you're through to Ben at NTL Credit Control, how can I help?"
Customer: "Yeah. Hi. Look, I know I haven't paid for my services since about the time the collapse of the Mayan Empire, but if I promise to pay you before the planet is invaded and subsequently dominated by Rylocks, would you switch my services back on today?"
Me: "Well, no. Seeing as you currently owe an amount equal to the national debt of a small country, and seeing as entire civilizations have risen and fallen since you last paid your bill, I'm afraid we can't switch it back on until such a time as it's paid for."
Customer: "WHAT?! THAT'S DISGUSTING! SOME GUY WHO WORKS AT THE ABATTOIR I SOMETIMES VISIT TO INHALE MEAT FUMES SAID THAT IF I CALLED I COULD HAVE MY SERVICES BACK ON!"
Me: "Nope."
Customer: "Get me your Supervisor."
Me: "Sir, by sheer luck of the draw, you're actually speaking to a Supervisor."
Customer: "Oh, Expletive Deleted! Well, get me your Manager, then."
Me: "What makes you think my Manager will see your nine-figure debt in a completely different light?"
Customer: "..."
Me: "You can ellipsis all you want, we're not switching your services back on."

On my last day, I took a grand total of three calls. I had a very similar customer who refused to accept I couldn't switch his services back on despite the fact that the last time he paid his bills it was in guineas. He basically shouted at me for about five minutes, after which I quote one of the last episodes of classic Doctor Who: "My theories appall you, my heresies outrage you, I never answer letters and you don't like my tie." That was fun.

Also, replying to all these posts & PM's where I've had to explain why I closed it, the time that's taken, I could have deleted the posts and reopened the thread :rolleyes:

Then you're wrong.

It's not a verb. Using it as a verb is wrong. However, in context it's perfectly clear, and that lends it meaning. If the rest of the English speaking world adopt this new use of the word "third" then it will become a verb. But at the moment it's just an error.

AndrewTaylor

Well that's a very popular school of thought. Some say we should encourage the language to evolve. Others say that that will destroy some of the nicer aspects of it (such as subtle distinctions between words which are lost by the constant misuse of both). Me, I've not decided. I tend to venomously oppose some misuses of words and not care at all about others.

The point is: the verb "second" comes from the Latin "secundus" meaning "next" or "follows", not from the ordinal number "second" (which obviously comes from the same root). Using "third" to mean the second seconding is nothing more than an incorrect back-formation. If you don't care about being right as long as you're clear then go ahead and use it. I don't really care, and I'm not sure what I said that made you think otherwise.

I don't use it, myself, mainly because I think it sounds a bit naff. There are real words I eschew for the same reason.

bloopy
30 Oct 2007, 22:55

Your all busy eating the chocolate you got from halloween, so when you speak, you have to be shown eating choclate, and having the word "munch" in brackets after every 2 words when your eating. and you should argue with the rest of the forum news staff that they arn't sharing, and if they do share more, you say that they get extra pay! then theres some newsy stuff [that I hope will be somwhat related to me, even though this situation is unlikely], then at the end they are holding chainsaws, and coughing, and one of them says well? you are surounded by them.
