Fun indie RTS game with nice HD graphics and an old-school interface, 8 different game modes, single-player and online multiplayer.
You send out spaceships to conquer neutral and enemy planets to produce more ships.
Very simple, intuitive gameplay, yet great tactical possibilities.

Also has a command-line based retro mode with even more old-school graphics, that you can toggle in-game. :D

Yep, Galcon Fusion is a new game, not made in Flash.

Here's the Flash version directly on the official website, without any 3rd party browser installs:

Jeez Akuryou, what is it with you and people paying money for indie games? Did an indie game developer touch you in a bad place when you were a child?I just see no point in paying for what's offered for free.

in the case of an indie title, a donation is fine and all, I'm just not paying before I know it's worth the money.

hell, I've paid instantaction.com for a few things since joining, even. I was just saying: don't pay for galcon when you can play it for free first. pay later if you like.

Well, I played the free demo on Steam beforehand and was instantly convinced of the quality of the game.
And playing the game in full HD resolution is definitely worth the €8.00.
I wouldn't have touched the Flash version after that.

Heavy Rain is rather delightful. I had thought I was going to hate it but the story is really engaging and the gameplay kind of blurs the line between watching a movie and playing a video game. It gets good once you get past the level where you have to brush your teeth and pour yourself some orange juice anyway.

Just got myself a copy of Assassin's Creed II Black Edition and I must say this truly is an awesome game IMO :D Only played for 30 minutes because of school and work. The addition of the database is quite interesting. It tells you the story of Italy during renessance (sp?).

Kingdom Hearts 2 has win interface/controls but the gameplay kinda fails compared to Kingdom Hearts 1.

Kingdom Hearts 1 with camera controls assigned to right joystick, D-pad to control the little menu in bottom left, more shortcut keys for quick access to potions etc since more shoulder buttons are now freed up and Action commands, but only for things such as opening chests and talking to people, not for battles would be awesome.

Maybe action commands for battles if it involves more then triangle bashing, like triangle to start then follow it with square, circle, x, circle and square etc. and have long chains of buttons required to pull it off.

KH2, however, is actually rather well-written thus far and much less full of "LET THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP BE YOUR LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS SO THAT YOUR HEART CAN BE SET FREE TO DREAM ITS DREAMS OF LOVE AND WONDER! I always preffered KH1 myself. For some reason the slightly clunkier battles felt more immersive. Maybe because the camera was close enough so that you could see what you were doing. In KHII Sora just kind of flies and flips around half the time, it's like he's not even there. Also I preffered his duds in the first game. They look like actual clothes, rather than a jumpsuit with pockets glued all over it. It's like a mass of cloth pretending to be clothes.

Uh, I haven't heard the dialogue for some time. I remember some of it was like that, I can give you that. Maybe it's better to just think of the dialogue as giving an impression, rather than taking it at face value

Does most multiplayer maps have players bases starting in an area only accessible by a ramp? I saw this mentioned on there forums, but would like you to confirm it. Hopefully it changes and gets more diverse or at least the single player aspect ditches that approach often enough.

Oh there's tons, its a multiplayer focused beta with no single player content as they are currently trying to balance all 3 factions (which are available in there entirety), optimize multiplayer maps for optimum gameplay, fix problems with specific hardware configurations and determine a reasonable minimum hardware specification.

The only thing that bothers me is the time limit on the demo, and the camera staying too close to you when you're parachuting, it totally blocks the view. That said, maybe that's adjustable but I just haven't found the option?

I'll probably get that game but I really doubt I'll actually get around to completing it. I expect a lot of dying/failing due to trying crazy stuff that is both dangerous and completely unnecessary yet awesome. :p

I'm playing it on the PS3, and yes moving the right stick zooms the camera out but only when you're looking upwards. If you start to look downwards it zooms back in. I don't know why but it really annoys me. :p

Actually, the objective is to stretch. Or rather, to help girl stretch so that she can reach out to more planets. You help her by stretching yourself, and reporting the total distance you stretched to the sun.

It's also sort of a sandbox. Not much to do in there other than eat stuff, stretch and get entangled in those spinning things.

You can also explode and then proceed to eat your own ass, but I haven't managed to do that. YET.

The people who I were playing against were pretty decent, i'm just pretty good at most of the maps. I camped in the big building in Derail, got the harrier and then got the chopper gunner, then I was 5 kills away from nuke, so killed 5 more people. I think our team had pushed into their spawns or something because only 1 person tried to get me, and they kept getting blown up by my claymores.

As for Wasteland, because i'm pretty good with the Intervention, I got the harrier strike fairly quickly, and then when the chopper gunner came everyone was helpless.

It seems pretty farfetched buy getting a nuke 2 times in a row is actually easily possible

So I bought Left 4 Dead 2 a few days ago (when the price dropped enough).
The Jockey and Charger are very annoying (I can never seem to kill the Jockey either...) and the gauntlet type events are interesting, if a bit too common (and very tense in versus).
I find most of the characters unlikable - they seem somewhat stereotypical and aren't developed much past that. I kind of like Nick, but he's a bit of a dick really...

It hasn't really introduced anything new though so I don't think such a quick sequel was merited.

The Jockey and Charger are very annoying
Agreed. Especially because they can very easily cause environmental deaths in Versus, and the game LOVES cliffs! Especially that one part of one of the campaigns where the entire level is on a bridge with loads of hiding spots.

Aside from that, they're really far more annoying than they are actual threats. Which makes them even worse.

I find most of the characters unlikable - they seem somewhat stereotypical and aren't developed much past that. I kind of like Nick, but he's a bit of a dick really...
Also agreed, and I'm pretty sure everyone feels somewhat the same way. A lot of L4D's charm was that its characters are somewhat Average Joes with ordinary, but distinct, personalities. L4D2's characters are just cookie-cutter in every way.

It hasn't really introduced anything new though so I don't think such a quick sequel was merited.I'll agree it was quick, but it really has changed a lot. All the different infected, weapons, panic events, campaigns and gameplay tweaks make it play completely different from the original, specially without all the corner camping.

I'll agree the characters are disappointing though, even if they got actual TV actors now.

Have you noticed how things like Wyverns Tear disappear from your inventory whenever you return to the village, be it after a quest or hunting in Moga Forest? Theres a message that appears telling you why but it only appears for a shorter time then the "returning supplies" message thus making it very hard to catch and read, especially with small E's looking like O's.

Yeah, it happens with the ones labeled "account items" in their description. They are also the items that you are asked to deliver on some quests, so I guess the reason you can't keep them is so you don't cheat those quest by bringing some of your own supply. :p

Bought Mass Effect off Steam when the offer was on - £3.24. Not that good, but I didn't expect much - the shooting is rather poor (although the auto-aim might be nice for those with console controls) but I can't shake the feeling that gameplay would be significantly improved if it adopted a first person perspective. The rest of the game is just running around and it really doesn't matter what perspective is adopted for that (although I can orient myself much more easily from a first person perspective).

Also bought Dragon Age Origins and the expansion (not as cheap), but I haven't played it much. Rolled a Mage and have to guess which magic tree will prove most affective later in the game - I hate it when games pull that **** (which is basically all RPGs), where you have to guess without any prior experience on which abilities will prove useful and which will be near useless as the game progresses.

SMG2 and MSMBwii are both much more challenging than thier prequels and they both contain the Super guide sooo...

Speacking of tutorials, the Pal release of Demon's souls comes with a booklet containing a complete guide to beating the game, complete with cheap boss strategies (stand here and the boss can't hit you!) and sage advice about killing yourself whenever you come back to life to prevent random stangers from doing you in mid-level.

Sony would not publish the game without a gamefaqs guide in the same box. What I'm getting at is that Demon souls is not a very well designed game at all.

I've only watched Yahtzee's review, but it sounds like a terribly designed game.it's designed to hark back to the days of extremely difficult games. it's extremely WELL designed for its purpose, but that purpose is to remind people of games before there was an established "good design" for games. Demon's Souls can't be called anything worse than TMNT II, Kid Icarus, etc, and it should get extra points towards the good design side simply because it's doing it on purpose where those did it on accident.

and even then, I picked up the controls pretty quickly and the levels never once confused me. not a single bit of bad design in the game, it's just designed so that not everyone will like it.

Old games didn't add an extra challenge upon death.
I get where it's coming from though. Older games tend to be more challenging than newer ones, but often for different reasons and seldom for the right ones.
Then of course there's the fact that most people don't want a really hard challenge - they want to win. Obviously that's what your last point is hitting on.

Akuryou13
30 Jun 2010, 17:45
Old games didn't add an extra challenge upon death.that's actually not exactly the way it sounds. it counts when you actually DIE. as in, most of the game your character is a ghost, but after beating a boss monster you resurrect until you die again. it's that death that makes the level you're playing shift towards Black World Tendency. Thing is, it takes about 6 or so real deaths to go Full Black (deaths as a ghost don't count) and even ON Full Black the monsters aren't THAT much harder to kill. the biggest deal there is that a couple new monsters spawn and those are rather extremely difficult.
I get where it's coming from though. Older games tend to be more challenging than newer ones, but often for different reasons and seldom for the right ones.I agree. games like the two I mentioned are frustrating due to the poor, unbalanced gameplay resulting from companies that didn't really know how to program a hero or an enemy in such a way that makes the game fun to play. Demon's Souls keeps that level of difficulty, yes, but it uses modern design. You die a LOT, but it's all in such a way that you know exactly what you did to screw up. Each death becomes a learning experience to better equip you for the future. I spent 8 hours on the first level, but once I'd beaten that one, every subsequent level got easier and easier as I learned how to read my surroundings.

You can have challenging level design in a game with a sensible tutorial
But the tutorials in SMG2 are completely sensible?

For the large part the tutorials are there if you need them, but if you don't you can just run straight past them.

You don't have to talk to the jump-spin bunny, you don't have to watch the video posts and you certainly don't have to actually watch the DVD. The only time the game stops for a tutorial is the first time you pick up each power up or motion stuff like fluzzard, I.E when your controls are suddenly different.

The super guide is awesome because if you don't need to use it you will not even encounter it.

This is exactly the kind of thoughtful, inclusive design that games need.

it's designed to hark back to the days of extremely difficult games. it's extremely WELL designed for its purpose, but that purpose is to remind people of games before there was an established "good design" for games. Designing a game badly on purpose doesn't excuse the bad design. Nobody liked the overworld in No More Heroes.

Also 'old school charm' doesn't exactly translate to an incredibly intricate and long RPG.

I'm cool with the game being hard. I'm fine with dying having harsh consequenses. I get that having every monster be able to wreck you very quickly leads to a very tense game.

I'm not cool with the game being nigh-unplayable without a guide. The titular demon souls are consumable items that are only revealed to have any other use hours into the game. The symbols representing weapon types are incomprehensible.

When the official guide to the game tells you to sequence break to get better equipment early and purposefully handicap yourself to avoid the games online component SOMETHING HAS GONE VERY WRONG.

Akuryou13

I'm not cool with the game being nigh-unplayable without a guide. I COMPLETELY disagree here. I had no issues at all without a guide.

The titular demon souls are consumable items that are only revealed to have any other use hours into the game. The symbols representing weapon types are incomprehensible. these points we can agree on. had I known the demon's souls were useful in the beginning that 8 hour marathon of level 1 would've gone by much faster, and the person who came up with the symbols for the stats had to be high.

When the official guide to the game tells you to sequence break to get better equipment early and purposefully handicap yourself to avoid the games online component SOMETHING HAS GONE VERY WRONG.here I'm not sure what you're referring to by "sequence break". the online handicap thing is also completely unnecessary, as I played the entirety in online mode without issue, so I can't see why the people who wrote that guide said to do that. granted, this guide that came with the euro version was entirely fan-created, so it can't exactly be held up to industry standards. of course there's something to be said for a company who uses a group of fans to create their official guide, and criticize away on that point, you'll find no argument here.

I was only aware of the reduced maximum health. Adding extra challenge when the player has cocked up is generally not advisable, particularly when instant, unpredictable deaths seem to be commonplace.

Akuryou13
30 Jun 2010, 19:48
Wait, what?lol, ok fair enough. the symbols for stats was a fairly minor thing, so I'll dismiss that entirely, but the lack of explanation for the souls is rather important. you hardly need an entire guide made for that one point, though, and you DO eventually get told what they're for once you can spend them towards stat points (which is when they're truly relevant anyway).

I was only aware of the reduced maximum health. Adding extra challenge when the player has cocked up is generally not advisable, particularly when instant, unpredictable deaths seem to be commonplace.the "reduced" maximum health is more like the inverse. your reduced health plays more like an overall maximum health with the ACTUAL maximum being more like a bonus for completing a boss, as you'll never keep that extra health for long. and, as mentioned, the difficulty doesn't go up unless you die numerous times in the same level after beating a boss in that level or using a resurrection stone. it's actually a pretty negligible inclusion.

Eh? That fight was really disappointing for me, mostly because the first two Bowser fights are exactly the same for no good reason, and even though the third and final one spiced up the patterns a little, the fact that the core mechanics were identical to the last two fights just made it annoying. His final form, which with all the build-up should've been awesome, was insanely easy, even easier than the first boss in the game. I don't know if that was a fluke or something but it really wasn't the best note to end the game on.

However, all of this is completely made up for by the second fight against Gobblegut. One of the funnest boss fights I've ever played; I burst out laughing because of how absurdly chaotic it gets. Also, I agree with you entirely on Slimy Spring and Throwback.

Well, IIRC that seems to be the norm for 3d mario games. Bowser fights have allways remained the same throughout the game, only spicing things up on the final fight. Variety would have obviously been nicer, but I can't say I was disappointed, I was expecting that.

And yes, the final fight was **** easy, but so was the whole game so... :p
I just really liked how he pops back after you defeat him once, and the whole setting of throwing meteors on his face to keep him from reaching you.

Flaming Gobblegut is nuts indeed, but so far the thing that gave me most trouble is Luigis Purple Coin Chaos on Mario Squared galaxy, probably didn't help that I was playing as Luigi :p. Actual number is 242.

There's more than nine special world stars and they count towards the first 120.

The other 2 are the final challenge and it's daredevil comet.

I'm currently at around 15 green stars, I'm hoping the last level is all it's cracked up to be as it's kind of a grind so far. For every fun to get to or well hidden green star there's three boring obvious ones.
