I've been playing a lot of Meteos lately, and I'm pleased to report that I've broken the 400,000 points barrier in Deluge mode with Smogor (Grannest) and Aetheria (Brabbit). Also, precisely half my planets now have top scores past 200,000, and only four still haven't passed 100,000 - Pyros (Hotted), Vortinia (Gigagush), Hevendor and Gravitas.

I got Civ IV and Lego Star Wars II DS for Christmas, and I've played both of them a fair bit too.

I tried that a while ago and kind of drifted away from playing it after I found I needed to track down a specimen of that one dude's favourite species and bring it to him whilst the descrption he gives of its star system is incredibly vague at best.

Played enough of it to get a good laugh out of this (http://www.angryflower.com/moreco.html), though.I didn't really consider it a priority to check that out, though I think it means it's one of those spots with a huge star in the middle of lots of little stars.

I keep playing it for the hilarious conversations with the aliens. "We're the Ethics police. Justify that costume... Immediately!"

And yes, planets in combat and Sylandro Probes are incredibly annoying, they both pop out at the worst times.

And yes, planets in combat and Sylandro Probes are incredibly annoying, they both pop out at the worst times.

I made it a priority to find out what their deal was, and I tracked down the Slylandro not long after the Zoq-Fot-Pik. (Hint: it's well worth your time.)

Pigbuster
23 Mar 2007, 01:14
To get rid of the probes you have to examine a planet at one of the stars in the very top-left.
And the planet is one that you usually don't examine, since you can't mine them.

I tried that a while ago and kind of drifted away from playing it after I found I needed to track down a specimen of that one dude's favourite species and bring it to him whilst the descrption he gives of its star system is incredibly vague at best.

The system is at the top, above Ur-Quan space. It's one of the 2 yellow stars that is somewhat surrounded by other stars (the other stars sorta look like a snake opening its mouth really wide to eat the yellow ones)

The most significant annoyance I've had was letting the Zoq-Fot-Pik (my favorite race so far) die because I ignored their distress signal because I'm stupid.
So I started over from an old save and wasted a day of work. Bleh.

So I started over from an old save and wasted a day of work. Bleh.I've allied with them, but their ship is rather crap imo. Plus I can't figure out how to get the Ur-Quan and Kohr-an to stop fighting to "save" them.

Yeah, their ship isn't too great. I just like the species.

You can save them if you go to their planet and kill a Khor-Ah when the Earth captain tells you that he received a distress signal.

After that, the Kzer-Za & Khor-Ah will keep fighting, but the Zoq-Pok-Fik won't dissapear.

Not really. There are many more people playing BF2.

Well, if you want to play online reasonably you need a legit CD key to be able to play on ranked servers to get promotions, awards and unlocked weapons.
Without that, the game would only be half the fun.

I suggest you get this:
http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/3308819/Battlefield_2_The_Complete_Edition/Product.html
Game with all expansions and booster packs for a low price.

It really is a pity that EA game just wants to squeeze out money and released BF2142 only 1.5 years after BF2 and only 4 months after the latest booster pack.

I've played the demo and read some info and think that it has some nice new smaller features and improvements that would have better fit into a patch for BF2.
The whole futuristic weapons & warfare has been done to death with games like Unreal Tournament and Quake.
Boring.

Well, I've tried out BF1942 and BFV too and must say that BF2 is better in any way.
The commander and squad features alone make it a great game and the unlocks, ranks and awards keep it a steady challenge.

Also, the nightvision, teargas, gasmasks and flashbangs from the Special Forces expansion are awsome and the night maps are one of the best in the game.

Pokemon will be returning to my DS now.

Of course, just after I ordered it, I learned that the fan-translation will be incompatible with the actual cartridge due to the large amount of hacking involved. P!ss.
So I had to print the 74-page script translation, which pretty much emptied out my black ink cartridge.

A small price to pay for finally having MOTHER3 in my hands. WOOTANG.

This game is simply fantastic. The videos of gameplay don't do it justice. You really need to play it to see how awesome it is.
This has to be one of the most entertaining games I've ever played.

Clover Studios definitely picked a good game to go out on (only now I'm even more pîssed that Capcom disbanded the team. You can't disband a team after they deliver games like Okami and God Hand. It's against the law or something.)

Hey, that's where I was stuck for ages! I'm not the only one! I eventually got through it, though, after much head-slapping by Dan.

Okay, the first thing you need to know (and the thing I kept missing) is that, back in the room with all the exploding barrels, the ladder goes down below grating level to this tunnel lit with a red light. This leads through to the room on the other side of the bars that are in the pipe room. Trouble is, there's no way up to the actual exit, which is on the far side of the room to where you came in. But while you're here, break all the planks and boxes in that hole in the ground with your crowbar, so that only the round cable drum things remain.

Now go back to the room with all the pipes (i.e. through the red tunnel, up the ladder, along that big horizontal pipe onto the platform with the high voltage warnings and down that short corridor). There's a little red release wheel on the big yellow vertical pipe in the middle, on the far side from where you are now. Pipe-hop down to it (it may take a little while to work out) and twiddle the wheel to fill the room with water. Now, get back to the surface (try not to drown, there are some medikits in a box in the room if you get stuck) and back to the now flooded "exploding barrel room". Go down the ladder there, and through the red tunnel. You are now in the room on the other side, and there should be some floating cable drums in there with you. If not, go down to where they are, and poke them a bit until they float loose. Now, usinging the cable drum(s), scramble and jump your way on to the far side platform. Yay! On to the bit where they introduce headcrabs (not counting Lamarr) for the first time.

That's an awfully long explanation for saying "go up the ladder, across to the next room, down the pipes, pull the valve, backtrack".

are you SUPPOSED to know who Kleiner or Vance are in HL1? cause I never ran into them. or Barney? any idea about him?

how about why the vortigants decided against slaughtering everyone? is there an explanation for that or did we just take that as fact upon playing HL2? I mean, I kinda killed their queen brain thing that worked all the portals there. shouldn't they hate humans?

hell, what even HAPPENED in HL1? an experiment blew up, but what was the experiment? what was the purpose of Black Mesa?

where the hell did the Combine come from?! how about the guy with the white hair and the beard who runs the combine in HL2? where the hell was he at all?

where the hell did the Combine come from?! how about the guy with the white hair and the beard who runs the combine in HL2? where the hell was he at all?

I'M CONFUSED!!Having done some serious reading around on Wikipedia last night, I have some answers.

1. Barney was a security guard at Black Mesa. He also stars in his own game, Half-Life: Blue Shift. Kleiner doesn't appear in HL1, but Eli Vance does (although he has dark hair rather than grey).

2. The Vortigants were slaves to that queen brain thing, so they're quite glad you killed her (although sometimes they get a bit melancholy when they see you, given you also killed a ton of them). They also hate the Combine because one major theory is that the Combine took over their real home world, forcing them into refuge in that Xen dimension thing. So they've allied with the human resistance against the Combine.

3. The jury's still out on what Black Mesa was actually for, but rumour is that it's all part of the G-Man's mysterious plot.

4. After you defeat that queen thing, a whole lot of dimensional ripping and stuff happens. This allows the Combine through.

5. Dr. Breen is The Administrator from Half-Life 1. He negotiated Earth's surrender to the Combine following the Seven Hour War, which occurs right after the end of HL1. As a reward, the Combine made him the guy in charge of Combine interests on Earth.

Finished Portal a few days ago. That was the best ending of any game, ever. Currently chipping away at Episode 2, just got the new car and the upgraded physics are nice, though the thing still steers like a toy wagon.

The first localization of a 15-year old series in Japan, MLB Power Pros (aka Power Pro-kun), has come out of nowhere and landed on Wii and PS2. I'll be picking it up for Wii today. IGN's review here (http://wii.ign.com/articles/825/825828p1.html), it's seriously worth checking out if, say, the Mario sports games and/or Albatross are the only types of sports games you generally like. It's great stuff.

But yes, it seems to be a great class for both the way I prefer to attack and the way I prefer to defend. Attacking, I can just run into a group of enemies and twirl around manically, setting people on fire, without really needing to aim. Defending, I can hide behind a corner and torch anyone who runs past.

I'm really warming to Pyro.

*b'dum-tsch*

But yes, it seems to be a great class for both the way I prefer to attack and the way I prefer to defend. Attacking, I can just run into a group of enemies and twirl around manically, setting people on fire, without really needing to aim. Defending, I can hide behind a corner and torch anyone who runs past.yeah, I'm kinda lovin pyro myself :) ambushing is fun

edit: oh, and Paul, you're required to be the Pyro! what with your inflammable baby lotion and all :p

Last night Matty, Dan and I had an absurdly epic game of TF2 on some custom map (We were all on the same team, with some random people against some other random people. Something about the map made it very difficult to close out, and the creator had failed to impose a time limit, so we were fighting for what felt like an hour over this one map. The five control points kept going back and forth: we'd get them down to one control point, then they'd get us down to one control point, and so on. Eventually, after a titanic effort, we won.

Incidentally, it was here that my new love for the Pyro class was kindled *gets shot*

I don't think I'll be flaunting this little episode in the OO Dwarf Fortress thread, but it's definitely worth publicizing in here.

While adventuring around, I found, in a dwarven fortress on the very northern edge of the map, surrounded by haunted wasteland crawling with zombie predators...

STAB STABBY STAB STAB... stab. Phew! Stab, stab.

Now for the incredible part.

Nobody cared.

Seriously. This whole fortress is packed to the brim with other dwarves, more than a few of whom are other survivors of the Forum Fort, to include even AndrewTaylor the sheriff. They all looked the other way on my messily killing Iguana in the middle of their hallways. A marksdwarf even decided to accompany me on my adventures.

How... utterly perfect.

Team Fortress 2 (kicks major ass, and looks amazing)
Crysis Demo (Fun, but I need to get used to it more)
Oblivion (Also fun, very very vast)
Unreal Tournie 04 (Just had a quick blast on it, still one of the best FPS's, but TF2 is better)

And Half Life 2, Episode 2 (whenever the duck it decides to freaking download it all, it's taking ages!)

I'm enjoying MMZXA a lot more now that I've gotten more into it, although I still have to skim through major dialogue exchanges faster than I want to just to make the voice actors shut the hell up so they don't ruin every single line (I mean, even something like "Oh, there it is") with their horrible, horrible... er, voices.

Still, I've unlocked some pretty friggin' sweet transformations.

I love how the game doesn't babysit you at all.

It actually gives the basic concept that is required to beat the boss in the level the boss is in, so by the time you reach the boss, you have the concept down pat. You just need to figure out how to apply it to the bigger enemy.

It's a much better way of doing it than, say, having someone send you a message through a communication headset saying "YOU HAVE TO JUMP ON HIS WEAK POINT DO YOU THINK THE WEAK POINT MIGHT BE THE BIG FLASHING BALL I'M NOT SURE I THINK YOU SHOULD TRY IT DID I MENTION YOU HAVE TO JUMP ON THE WEAK POINT!?"

The bits of Super Mario 64 that I've played relied on the same principle.

Unfortunately, being the sort of person who tends to avoid enemys when he can rather than actually kill them, this leaves me a bit stumped when it comes to the boss battles. "Oh, ground pound the plaster on his back..."

I got hooked on Knytt stories a couple of weeks ago. Once you exhaust the expansions it becomes really hard to find decent levels to play.

I've played a lot of the levels at www.knyttlevels.com and they range from great to horrible.

I recomend Colours, Station 07, Scrolly Polly and Gaia (makes sure you get the latest version) from that site.

I also recomend 'Don't eat the mushroom', although it's not on the site I linked. Google it. And set your 'internet humour' tollerance high before you play it.

Anyone else know any good levels?

Melon
12 Dec 2007, 17:28
Don't eat the mushroom (http://nifflas.ni2.se/forum/index.php?topic=1451.0) can be found here

If you want to grab the official expansion pack "A Strange Dream" then it's here (http://nifflas.ni2.se/index.php?main=02Knytt_Stories&sub=04Get_More_Levels), It has a level called "An Underwater Adventure" and it's fantastic. The 3rd party levels expansion pack is OK to, although I wasn't a fan of "Afar".

Otherwise, there's not really any that philby hasn't mentioned already that I'd advise. I thought I'd have a shot at making my own, and I made a small test level that works a bit like the game Soul Reaver, whereby you have two dimensions and can swap between the two. Works OK, but the big mass of switch objects creates a small lag when moving between rooms.

This week I have mostly been playing Phantom Hourglass.

I found a nice little exploit. When you've got the yellow beacon in the Temple of the Ocean King, instead of proceeding into the next room, each time you use the beacon to enter the temple just come back out of the door you drew the Tri-Force on. Now draw an hourglass on the big red door, go in, collect the contents of the yellow jar, come back out of there and draw a Tri-Force on the door again. Now you are 30 seconds better off than you were when you stepped into the beacon to enter the temple. Unfortunately, doing this and then stepping into the yellow beacon again doesn't reset your time with the extra 30 seconds, though I have a theory I am yet to try; if you go from the start of the temple to the red door and collect the yellow jar prior to stepping into the light to set your time you will already be 30 seconds better off. If you then repeat the above after re-entering the temple through the yellow beacon you could potentially add a whole minute. I'm very tired so I don't know if this makes much sense.

This may be well known but I have made an effort not to read anything about this game online yet as I heard it was quite easy.

If that's the 4-star difficulty with the Divas, I didn't bother getting to the end. I failed JJF about 32 times on 3 Stars, but suffering through Canned Heat just isn't worth it on 4 Stars, and September was proving next to impossible as well.

To you and anyone who owns a PSP who has some spare cash or gift cards now that Christmas has rolled around, I'd recommend tracking down a copy of Monster Hunter Freedom 2 if you can. Not an exceptionally hyped game, but you play as an adventurer and go out slaying monsters and you get to use their hides in making armor and stuff. You also get to wield BIG-ASS HAMMERS.

It's kind of like Diablo II if you cut down on the adventure element and ousted random maps in favor of adding an actual in-depth combat system. Definitely my favourite game on the system so far. But yeah, might wanna invest in a memory stick first.
