Guitar Hero 3 and Zack & Wiki.

Zack & Wiki is absolutely outstanding. It pains me that it hasn't sold as well as it should, because it deserves a sequel.
Its puzzles are fantastic, especially in the later levels.

Hoo boy, I'm currently brickwalled by JJF on sweatin', but I think I've almost got it, as long as there isn't another section after the hell that is the bit with the three spinners.

There is. And it's hell. :(

The three spinner part was probably the most difficult bit for me, though.
The worst thing about that game is that the health meter is constantly draining, and in the late game it goes down so fast that missing 5 notes is enough to fail. It even goes down WHILE SPINNING THE SPINNER, for christ's sake.

GH3 is truly one of my favourite games ever.

Zack & Wiki is high on my wish-list, which currently has more titles than I care to recall.

I got Endless Ocean for Ʃmas which I really can't wait to start playing when I get back to the UK :D

GH3 is truly one of my favourite games ever.

If you have any means of getting it, GH2 has a far better song selection and apparently less insane difficulty curve in the higher tiers. I mean, come on -- what other game lets you jam out to the Trogdor! theme? And Misirlou, and Less Talk More Rokk, and Free Bird, and it goes on.

And GH2 was actually made by the team (Harmonix) who came up with the original game -- they split from Red Octane at some point afterwards and so those guys did their best to KICK IT UP A NOTCH for the sequel by adding boss battles and powerups and crap that really wasn't necessary.

Super Mario Galaxy evokes feelings in me I've not felt since Super Mario 64 or either of the N64 Zelda games. It is so very epic, harkens back to aspects of the past series in ways all but forgotten, and is nearly perfect in every way.

I dunno, the deviation from the normal mario games with the addition of the gravity and planet stuff kinda makes it not feel quite right to me. still an amazing game, just doesn't evoke the same feelings mario64 did.

I was so dissapointed when I realized that the songs in the shop at the beginning are the ONLY bonus songs (Apart from Beyond the Fire and Flames).

I mean, Devil Went Down to Georgia was awesome, but I wanted at LEAST some more Metalocalypse/Freezepop/Goofy injoke stuff.
And WHY WHY WHY do they continue to ignore Liquid Tension Experiment's Acid Rain? :(

Still, I quite like GH3.
I'd buy GH2 too if they ported it to the Wii, but I doubt that's going to happen, and I don't want to have 2 guitar controllers that only work for specific versions.

blah GH2 blah

I have all of the GH games on PS2, the Cherry guitar, the Black guitar and the white wireless guitar.

What I like most about GH3 is that the hammer-ons and pull-offs work in such a way that it feels like you're changing strings mid-stream. I also like about as many of the main setlist tracks in 3 as I do in 2; there are loads I would never listen to on a Walkman but absolutely love playing.

In terms of difficulty, playing Hard on GH3 is like playing Expert in GH2 and I never got as far as completing GH2 on Hard, so going back to it now should be a doddle. That's another thing I like about it because it has improved my skill level but still offers a tougher challenge.

Also, co-op career mode is going to be so freakin' sweet. Me and my girlfriend are yet to start as we have been working through single-player, taking it in turns, but co-op is so very much the way to go.

In fact, there's so much I could write about the beautifully intricate and hugely in-your-face changes in 3 that I might as well write a full review.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no expert at the game but it's just so much fun that I don't care about winning or losing, really (although the Slash battle on Hard did give me rage; I think it's that rage which fuelled my victory).

I refuse to buy GH3, partially because Activision suck but mostly because the game's rubbish. It has none of the soul, charm or character of the first two games, largely because it was developed by a different company - a company who's major output over the past decade has consisted of the same Tony Hawk's game with a slightly different title.

Drawn to Life is really fun, but the second boss is a nightmare.

"So I've got to destroy these four pinecone things that are hanging from the Evil Tree Thing, and each pinecone takes three hits to destroy. Getting to the pinecones requires some platforming, and the tree shakes periodically, dropping you back down to the floor again, so you have to be quick. As yet, nothing that actually harms you. But now add endlessly spawning Goddamned Bats (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GoddamnedBats) to the mix. By the time you kill the bats, the tree shakes. By the time you get back to where you were before the tree shook, the bats are back. ARGH"

Picked up Zack & Wiki, loved it. Got to the fourth level or so, where you're required to make constant upward-jerking motions to reel in a giant fish. Game absolutely refuses to detect this motion properly regardless of how I perform it.

Half an hour later, puzzle is completed, absolute minimum score is achieved, wrist hurts. Rest of week: entire arm in bloody agony. Haven't returned to it since.

Also reiterating Monster Hunter Freedom 2. Probably the best PSP game yet. I've sunk 30 hours into it already and I'm not even an eighth of the way through all the available quests. Unfortunately I just seem to have hit a brick wall, as the final 2-star quest features a monster which hammers have no effect on whatsoever, meaning I'm going to have to go back and grind for the materials to upgrade some other weapon class. :p

One of the annoying bits in that game. There are a few times when the motion they want you to do is... unintuitive. :(
I don't think it's even POSSIBLE to reel the fish in the first time, i.e. get the maximum score with it.

It is, however, possible to lure the frog down the water slide, turn it into a bomb and blow the fish up. Maximum score and minimal arm-ache.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2. I'm supposed to kill 10 of these dumb pink gorillas, and I'm doing so pretty easily with my amazingly badass and big-ass katana. I run up to one of them, and rather than roar at me and lunge uselessly at me like most of them do, he turns around and raises his big ugly ass at me. Just as I'm starting to think "what the hell is he doing..." BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAP

The stench lingers for some time and spoils your appetite, rendering you unable to eat stamina-restoring food items.

That was the worst injury I got on the whole quest, no less. One of them charged into me and did like half the damage the big fart did. I even killed a velocidrome without injury -- think big-ass raptor having a bad day. Of course, I did blind it with a homemade flash bomb first, so maybe that doesn't count.

What a great game.

That's pretty much all it is. The positions are flipped and mirrored, they're smaller and they appear faster.

Not too much of an issue in the early stages, but when you have to handle the massive run of tiny, rapid beats in JJF... agh.

Personally I'm going to miss Andy & Co., but I guess I'll put that aside if they've managed to improve the game balance.

EDIT: Funnily enough, it came out in Europe today.

Right, let's take a look at this unit list.

Gunboats look nice, even though they're taking on the difficult task of replacing the (very very awesome but still not broken for some reason) Black Boats. They cost 6000G, can transport one infantry, and carry one round of ammo that they can use against other ships. Still, pity they can't supply stuff any more.

Dusters look neat too, essentially filling the open Assault Plane slot in the roster, although I can't help but worry that they make B-Copters (still my favourite unit :p) kinda redundant.

The Anti-Tank looks a little overpowered, but I guess it still costs nearly twice as much as an Artil so hey.

Battleships can now move and fire on the same turn. That's realistic, but it doesn't half change things.

Suddenly Aircraft Carriers are direct combat units, but they make up for losing their massive missile range by becoming mobile seaplane factories.

APCs are now called Rigs and can apparently build temporary structures.

The Flare looks interesting as a sort of Anti-FoW Tank.

A lot of old units cost a bit less, but Infantry cost a bit more.

Hmm. Lots of stuff.

Striker
25 Jan 2008, 21:16
Yes the changes are really nice. Gunboats actually are useful, they make up there cost with that one attack if against the right kind of unit. Plus they navy needed it's own "Cannon fodder" like copters are for air and infantry are for ground.

basic infantry cost more(but mechs less). This is probably to prevent the old "infantry + arty meatgrinder" strategy.

Medium tanks are slightly less powerful then they were before, but only cost 12000

Fighters no longer one hit kill bombers. Makes missles seem more powerful.

The ubertank of the game is probably only as powerful as the neotank, and much more vunerable to helicopters

Anti-tank is somewhat anti-everything(besides planes, yes, they actually hurt copters good too.) But they only have the range of an arty. Infantry make up their cost very well against antitank. Rockets work too.

temporary supply bases are 7 kinds of awesome when going on the offense.

Theres no uberly unbalanced CO abusing like colin/sashi from previous games.

Dusters are cheaper planes and somewhat good against soft targets. They are pathetic against armor. Copters keep a good niche through that.

Seaplanes are like the stealth planes of dualstrike without the stealth. They hit pretty hard against anything but need refuelling every two turns. (Personal Peeve: Why is the red seaplane modelled after an A-10? That is certainly NOT a carrier plane.)

Some major differences with the actual gameplay (not units) to note are:

All building provide cover/fow.

FOW is lifted and stays lifted for the rest of the turn when a unit drives by it.(you can scout a whole forest with one air unit potentially, this counterbalances the above.)

Both ground AND NAVAL units can travel on/under bridges.

This is the game changes i can think of right off the back that people wouldn't know from screenshots/most game reviews.

Now back to playing it some more...

Go ahead again, daimyo hermitaur. Make my other day.

This one's made out of shogun ceanataur, which is what a daimyo hermitaur is when it sucks even worse. Ergo, this armor was stupid hard to get, and I'm just way more thrilled than I should be to have it. I'm keeping the hermitaur armor, though, because it offers better defense -- this one is more offense-oriented. It's so pointy all over the place that it actually makes my weapon sharper, and, with a little buffing from Decorations, somehow makes me better at sharpening weapons that have dulled. Also, the hermitaur armor, despite overall much better defense, leaves a couple of glaring elemental weaknesses that this one doesn't. Well, now I feel like all my bases are covered. Oh, and I look more badass than... A really, really badass thing.

This, unfortunately, didn't work. It's either because the Pod imbedded in it (rendered invisible) dragged on the ground, or, more likely, the engine was way too damn heavy. I tried a couple of different levels of torque on the wheels, too. I'll have to give it another try with a few changes.

http://g.photos.cx/gm_construct0004-a2.jpg
Attempted a spectacular stunt car jump. Untested thruster on the back of the stunt car was too strong, causing me to overshoot the barrels. Haven't re-attempted because the vehicles crash GMod periodically, which sucks unbelievably.

one of the very most popular among all Audiosurfers, Dragonforce: Through the Fire and Flames.ok, THAT level kicked ass.

my complaint about the game in general, though, is that while the movement of the tracks reflects the movement of the song very well, the blocks that you need to collect completely don't. it seems rather random on the songs I've played so far. occassionally it gets it right, but most of the time it just randomly sets the blocks without any concern for tempo.

Well Audiosurf is both a rhythm and puzzle game. With all the difficulties and gamemodes, the block layout probably has to be more fluid so the game doesn't get too predictable.

There's an awesome amount of Frank Klepacki tracks on the scoreboards. :)

just playing AudioSurf on the song "Someday" by Sugar Ray. the strong, steady bass of the song makes for a freakishly disorienting course. the blocks aren't particularly challenging as the song is fairly slow but the level keeps jolting constantly and sending you at super-speed for almost unnoticeable bursts. was a very awkward course to play.

anyone have any other song suggestions to try out with the game? things you've played that make for particularly interesting courses?

Road Rash III on Sega Megadrive. It's such an awesome rush, a really fast-paced and well-balanced game with good controls, and yet sometimes you're barely in control at all. Such as when you get kicked across the path of an oncoming car, or you're sliding madly around a corner and you barely pass the car on the outside. The near misses and the bad luck of the opponents make the game hilarious at times.

I could tell you which levels those are if you can't bother.

I was more than slightly confused by your hint because I did have green flags on all of those spots, and because I had already unlocked two of them in other game modes; thanks for the hint, because I probably never would have found the last one, having pretty much left SE to rot after completing it. :p

Last thing I was up to when I played was having some regular Brawls with the AI. It sucks. Loudly. It's almost more merciless to the human player than Level 11 of Classic mode where all 3 of the other guys are supposed to be ganging up on you. They don't give damn one about anybody but the player. I don't even mean they're all headed straight for you like drones, I mean they actually make coordinated, deliberate efforts to surround you.

I'm only at this so I can chip away at some of the unlockables that can only be gotten from that mode, then I'm going back into single player mode where single players belong.

I've yet to do a 3v1 battle against some level 9s but I get the feeling it won't be NEARLY as easy as it was in the other 2 games.

and as for them coordinating attacks on you, it's always fun to have one send a random missle/plasma ball/other projectile somewhere away from everything just to have the other 2 chunk you into said projectile.....overly-accurate computers ftw...

Old Newlands (whee, oxymoron). It's changed a bit over the years, what with replacing the old coal power plant, decommissioning the old landfill, the rise of land values, and the introduction of high-tech industry. This is where most of the rewards like my house, the courthouse, the city hall and that weird statue live.

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/227/newernewlandsdb1.png
Newer Newlands. Home of the university (that conveniently fitted into a big rectangle of road that I wasn't sure what to do with) and the awesome microwave power plant.

Newest Newlands, home of the newly developing railway system (Eventually I'll probably have to build subways and some sub/rails to service Old Newlands) and the port.

http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/3848/thebitwedontlikepeopletxz0.png
And finally, the stuff that the City Beautification people would rather you didn't see, but you're going to see it anyway. The jails, the Maximum Security Prison that helps the budget tick over, the giant landfill, waste to energy incinerators and recycling centres that cope with the garbage we get from a highly lucrative Neighbour Deal, and an army base. And, uh, a park. Yeah.

Dan might post his city at some point. It's twice the size of mine in terms of population.

I haven't been dethroned on any of the songs I played yet.
The reason is that the ID3 tags of most of my songs are formatted badly or are missing entirely. :p

Also, I'm playing The Ship (http://www.theshiponline.com/) again right now.
I didn't realize how much fun that game is when I bought it 1.5 years ago.

Whether you wanted it or not, an update of how Newlands is coming on:

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/8886/newlandsupdateee4.th.png (http://img529.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newlandsupdateee4.png)

Notes:

1. Past the 100,000 population mark, whee.
2. Over the river, whee.
3. Zoned some areas of high density residential in the old town area and got a few skyscraping apartments, whee.
4. Built the Geyser, Medical Research and Science Centres, whee (although commercial is still being very sluggish).

In terms of the game itself, everything is running fine: budget is perky, all services are doin' fine, high-tech industry is going great... but there are one or two Matters Of Civic Pride:

1. Newlands' slogan may as well be Built On Other People's Rubbish: we have a deal with one of our neighbours where they give us a silly amount of trash (>20,000 ktons) for a silly amount of cash (>2k simoleons) every month. Take this away and the city would implode on two counts. Firstly, this contribution to our budget has ensured low taxes and generously funded services for generations, and without it we would quickly be plunged into the red, necessitating lots of service cuts and tax raises to ensure that the city didn't go down the toilet. Secondly, this rubbish is our main source of power, thanks to a battery of six Waste to Energy Incinerators, whose contribution to the grid dwarfs our supposed "mainstay" the Microwave Power Plant.

Okay, so why would I ever want to stop this life-giving deal? Well, firstly as I say it's a Matter Of Civic Pride. In-game it doesn't amount to much, but from my point of view, imagine what the tourists will say. "Newlands: The Garbageman City"? There's also the whole self-sufficiency thing. Oh, I dunno. More pertinently, a large amount of the money that I earn from this deal goes into maintaining the said W2E battery: every 70-odd years, one of them (sometimes two or more) gives up the ghost and that's 25,000 simoleons (or 50,000, or whatever) I have to pay for a new one. Even with all the money this deal brings in, I'm never going to be rich. Without it, I could probably decommission half the W2Es. Finally, six of them so close together produces a cloud of pollution so dense that it makes coal power look friendly. I could space them out, but somehow I feel that would be worse. At least with them in their current ghetto the rest of the city is fairly safe. The third worry is more "what if something goes wrong? What if they explode when I'm not expecting it, or garbage supply naturally exceeds demand as my own city grows? Then the deal cancels and I get a chuffing huge penalty fee. Am I better off just cancelling it for free whenever the other mayor asks for a change in terms?". So that's it for garbage really.

2. As I say earlier, commercial just won't develop. They've got an army base, a science centre, a medical centre and stupidly low taxes, but the C indicator (the odd spurt aside that really gets covered by re-developing abandoned buildings) remains steadfastly inactive. In one sense, it's no big deal: I've got enough demand for high-tech industry that I can plop it down right next to residential and not really care about nimbyism. But it is a Matter Of Civic Pride. I'll never have a downtown at this rate. And it's downtowns and city centres that give a city soul. Without one, Newlands is basically just a happier version of Milton Keynes.

Related to this is the issue of land values, which refuse to go past medium. It's not a massive deal: poor people have got to have somewhere to live, and they're well-educated, healthy and safe poor people. In this sense, my city is a socialist utopia. There's also a sizeable middle-income bracket that I have no problem with because they power my high-tech sector (that's my guess, anyway. I know that this is the case for SC4, but I'm less sure about 3K). But it would be nice to have some rich people. Any rich people. They'd make the city look a little classier somehow. The one annoying thing about the low-income houses and shops is that they, well, look ugly. Maybe I should change my tileset :p.

When all's said and done, the low land values are probably the fault of the Giant Prison, which I know depresses land values and I probably could get rid of and still have my budget look healthy. In terms of money, the prison is now a drop in the ocean compared to the trash deal. So yeah, maybe that's the answer.

Thoughts?

I've even got mailed about being beaten on really obscure game music, even OGG files!

Paul.Power

The year is 2275. Steam trains rule the railways of Newlands (they always do in SC3K. Not that I'm complaining ;)).

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7615/newlandsupdate2275xj9.th.png (http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newlandsupdate2275xj9.png)

Notes:

1. The city is now slightly too big to fit into the window at the furthest zoom level! There's a little bit of light industry hiding off in the south-west.
2. An airport has been built where the maximum security prison once stood.
3. Every time I decommission a W2E, I build its replacement slightly further from the city, slowly taking all the pollution towards the northern corner.
4. We're getting some big commericial skyscrapers going.
5. Lots of money, even despite having to keep replacing all my W2Es.

Only one problem, really: the RCI indicator is starting to go a bit haywire. Up until now it's been a fairly straightfoward "Residental and industrial booming, commercial flat" - there's been the odd wobble, but on the whole that's how it's stayed. Now suddenly the three indicators keep jumping up and down. For example, at the time I took this screeny it was Res' turn to take a dive, and Ind and Com were both clamouring for attention.

I've also still to attract any high-wealth residents.

EDIT: 2300

http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/6411/newlandsupdate2300tm7.th.png (http://img259.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newlandsupdate2300tm7.png)

The first major new thing is that big square of Res and Com, built on an artificial hill and with water around it. It was at this point that Randall Shoop appeared and told me that the Sims wanted a stadium.

"Okay, Randall", I said, "how do I build it?"

But he was mysteriously silent, in that enigmatic way of his.

After looking it up online, I realised I must have missed the Below Average Bowlers petitioning me for it, so I went over to the Meet screen to see him. I could now build the stadium.

Well, other than the whole 75,000 Simoleons thing. Irony is, I had the money - but that was before my Massive and Slightly Pointless construction project. Still, I took out a loan (my profits are strong enough that it isn't a problem) and got it. The good news is, the stadium seems to have stabilised my RCI meter again - although commercial is still moribund.

GRRGHHRGHH

I saw that Slick was "Online", but there was no way to tell him "HEY! I'M HERE! LOOK AT YOUR FRIEND LIST! DON'T LEAVE! NOOOOOOOOO"

I don't mean that it should be a huge intrusive display that shows up during a battle. I think a little icon in the corner that shows up when a friend is online would be invaluable. (And you'd be able to choose if it shows up during a "With Anyone" brawl or not.)

That would be a lot better than staring at your friend list until something happens, or having to set something up in MSN or something.

...

Now that I think of it, though, there IS a little comment you can have by your name. You could make it something like "LET'S GO: Wednesday 8pm Central, YA DIG?" and then it would work out fine and dandy and stuff. It's better then nothing.

The new Gold Rush map in TF2 is good fun. Played through it three times on both attack and defence: won (i.e. got all seven control points) two out of three on attack and all three on defence. I'm not sure how, but I somehow managed to get 14 points in one life as a Pyro: mostly through captures, I think.

There were also a lot of Medics around trying to get these new achievements, naturally (when I first went on, my team had six other players, four of whom were Medics). Still, makes a change from none at all, and it did make the game flow better.

The unusual thought processes going on in my slightly bent mind led me to remember the demo for Critical Mass, which was a little space warfare turn-based strategy sort of thing from back when Windows 95 was the norm and computers themselves were pretty new to little old me. Not the most technically impressive thing ever, but deep in simple, engaging kind of ways, and very addictive. I assumed that it was abandonware by now.

Instead, I found Critical Mass 4.0, which was released some time last year. (http://www.windowsgames.co.uk/critical.html) The game has been under development for eleven years. The newer version has somewhat updated graphics (woo, triangles in more than two colors) and a handful of new ships and missiles, along with easy-to-use editors so you can design your own ships and missions. It was a bit pricey at $20, but I sprang for it, for nostalgia's sake, and maybe just to support the guy. I've already designed an Arwing (http://g.photos.cx/arwing-bd.png), which is, as it should be, a very high-end, expensive ship which moves quickly and is well-armed.

Action-packed super gameplay screenshot. (http://g.photos.cx/OHSNAP-62.png)

It was a quiet day in Gravelpit. Nothing was heard but the calm noise of sentries being built, medics charging up, and snipers standing ever so motionless.

Until... they came.

At first it seemed like an every-day run. A few were killed, a few died for it, lots of bullet fire. But then they wouldn't stop coming. They kept growing in numbers, coming from every hook and cranny. The more we took down, the more followed. Nothing could stop them. They stood tall and strong, grinning gleefully as they marched through our defenses. Spies merely poked them, snipers merely bounced off their thick heads, pyros merely made them smell funny. It was a disaster.

Before we knew it, points A, B and C were taken. It all happened in the blink of an eye. Nobody could believe it. Nobody could stomach it. Nobody could react... until it was too late...

Yesterday I finished LostWinds having collect all 24 statues.

It's a beautiful game. It reminds me of so many other games in a really good way. I really like the big open platform world; it reminds me of Super Metroid, stripping away the barriers of "level 1", "level 2" etc and allowing you to access areas you couldn't and further explore areas you could the further you progress. I also really like the simple Wii Remote gestures; they make me pine for Okami on Wii but they're also so very well implemented that I suspect Okami may fall short of its brilliance. I found the puzzles a little simple but they reminded me of Zelda enough that I could forgive their simplicity and lose myself in the process, using lateral thinking and often bending the rules to create shortcuts. The design is adorable through and through, not just visually but also interactively; the way the whole world seems affected by your pointer but the real action is limited to the plane on which you walk.

If you don't own this, go and get it from the Wii Shopping Channel. It's frookin' magic.

Incidentally, I reckon the future episodes will be cheaper, since you've already bought all (or at least most of) the assets and you'll basically be buying additional code and level structure (and a few more assets - bosses, new enemies etc). I could be wrong, though.

Instead, I've just picked up this smaller, but just as addictive alternative called Harvest: Massive Encounter. It truly gets massive later on. Love the B movie feel.

I recently brought paper mario on the virtual console. It's quite fun so far. Although it's not nearly as great as SMRPG.
Paper Mario seems just a bit too easy.

I was going to say that, but for some reason I didn't.

Probably because I was inevitably going to link it to cricket (http://leftarmchinaman.blogspot.com/2008/04/new-zealand-vs-england-complete-series.html)

Mostly yes.

Except I have been overcome by an unusual desire to see some poor creature be brutally murdered and devoured by a giant two headed reptile thing.

:p

Yeah, the leaked version is the free one, with about 1/4 of the parts available in the full ($10) version.

I've only put up a few things (http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=usr-Munkee79) so far, because I'm reserving most of my final design decisions for when I can actually use all the parts. :p

Seriously?

I think the editors look more fun than the actual game. :pthe part of the game that looks fun to me is the making the creature and seeing how it acts in the game itsself. then the rest of the RTS elements add to it till it's worth actually paying money for. i'm not paying $20 on top of the $50 the game's going to cost at release just to play with the creator for a little bit.

now, if I can get a hand on the free version, you're damn right I'll be playing around with that :p

Been a while since I worked on my SC3K city, but here, have an update:
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6743/muchlaterfull1cd9.th.png (http://img208.imageshack.us/my.php?image=muchlaterfull1cd9.png)

Notes (part one, because my arms are tired):

1. Old Town. What it says on the tin, this is where it all began. It's also where my house, the town hall, the courthouse and a lot of other civic buildings live.

2. University Lake. The name of both the largest lake in Newlands (well, it's a... lake with a university near it) and the waterfront bedroom community next to it.

3. Downtown. The first proper area of downtown (i.e. high-density commercial) zoned in Newlands, set around the focuses of the medical centre, the science centre and the stadium.

4. Twinlakes. Two small lakes that are sort of perpendicular to each other form the basis of this community. The construction of the stock exchange here has also led to the construction of some high-rise commercial nearby.

5. East Harbourside. Newlands seaport and environs, mostly industrial but parts of it are slowly being rezoned as residental and commercial as my industrial sector begins to scale back.

6. Newlands Utilities. AKA "the bit we don't want you to see". The army of incinerators and W2EIs that take silly amounts garbage from our neighbours in Coffers Corner and keep the city's budget afloat. One recent change has been the slightly dubious switch from Waste to Energy to conventional incinerators. You don't get electricity from them, and they pollute more, but hey, they're a lot cheaper to replace when they go kaput. To compensate for this sshortfall in electricity production, the city is switching from microwave power to fusion power - more expensive, but much, much more cost-effective.

7. Newlands Village. Symptomatic of trends in Newlands recently, Newlands Village began life as a light industrial estate. With the rise in population and the tipping of the commercial-industrial balance in favour of commercial, industry has fallen out of demand somewhat and many industrial buildings have become abandoned. So the plan has been to bulldoze the abandoned buildings and rezone the blank squares as residental or commercial, depending on demand. The village is now an eclectic mix of high-wealth residental and commercial, and high-tech industry. Well, at least people are close to their jobs.

8. Newlands Airport. Does what it says on the tin, basically this was a redevelopment of an old landfill site with a view to boosting commerce in the city. Didn't really work. But anyway: planes!

9. Central Heights. Newland's first real planned community: built on an artifical hill surrounded by lakes in an endeavour to raise land values, this square grouping of residental and commercial has gone on to become a focal point for the city.

10. Northside. More light industrial estates, originally built to provide jobs for the residents of Central Heights. As with Newlands Village, this is slowly being redeveloped as mixed zoning as industrial demand declines.

11. The N1 Corridor. In many ways, the N1 Highway is Newlands' biggest (hopefully only) white elephant. It sees little use, and it doesn't really go anywhere, stopping short of downtown while also managing to go right round Central Heights without really servicing it. Given the effectiveness of Newlands' mass transit system, the highway could even be called superfluous. Still, at least it serves as a focal point for development, although I can't develop it too much without venturing into the high pollution areas around Newlands Utilities.

12. South Harbourside. Ironically rather younger than locations 7 to 11, South Harbourside was the first community to be founded on the western side of the River New. Mostly a mix of industrial and residential.

13. Newbanks. Growing out from South Harbourside, with the boundary marked by the country club and a windy road, Newbanks was the first real attempt to get upper-class housing going: riverside properties, country club. Didn't work brilliantly, but the middle wealth houses are pleasant enough.

14. Factory Heights. Growing out from South Harbourside in the same way as Newbanks, but for "residential by a river" read "industrial on a hill".

15. Varleytown. Because if you haven't named at least a part of the city after yourself, you aren't doing it right. Another planned community, with an avenue leading up to North Cross.

16. Lakeline Drive. A windy road that runs down a land bridge between two lakes, Lakeline Drive is the city's first real example of trying to work with a piece of geography rather than barge round it. Low density residential.

17. The Horseshoe. The second real example of trying to work with a piece of geography rather than barge round it. A semicircular road that travels around a lake on the edge of the map. Mostly low density residential, with some commercial and industrial mixed in.

18. North Cross. The newest community, North Cross is based around a series of crossing railway lines laid in before development began as a sort of "placeholder" for things to come. The diagonal nature of the railways constrains development somewhat, but it looks interesting, which is the main thing.

Just played a fantastic game on 2fort in TF2.

I was a scout, and somehow I was able to run to the enemy intel without being seen by anyone. I grabbed the case and ran all the way out of the enemy base, but there was a huge firefight on the bridge, and I think the sewer was being attacked as well, so the only way through was to jump over the river. I leaped as far as I could but it wasn't enough.
Then a sniper shot me in the back, which nearly killed me but also propelled me into the air, giving me just enough distance to barely land on the other side and run into my base.

It doesn't sound nearly as good in writing, but seriously, that was the coolest thing I've seen in TF2 so far. :D

My latest accomplishment seems to be sniper feuds! An enemy sniper kept headshotting me on CTF_Turbine, so I switched to Sniper and got back at him! After a while of this, he walked over to my side just to whack me in person so we ended up gunfighting. As Snipers! And after a while of this, he got fed up and switched to a Sniper Spy (even though I was the only Sniper so he was pretty obvious) just to backstab me!

Hilarity in a can.
