Some games help you so much that you think the tutorial is over when you actually just beaten the game. I can easily see Braid being like that if a larger studio had made it, because it would be more important that anybody can play the game. A small company, like one person, can afford a smaller audience and make the game really tricky.

That's actually the only reason games are so easy these days, they cost so much to make that publishers need to be sure anybody can play and finish them.

Well, personally I agree with them on this: I like being able to get my money's worth, which doesn't really happen if you get stuck early on.

To be fair to Braid, that hasn't really happened given it cost £3.39 and I've got a fair way into it.

But the thing is, this is moving the goalposts:

"Braid is really intuitive!"
"Iiiiii don't think so."
"Well actually it's meant to be tricky so ha!"

Scribblenauts stilll gets major props for concept, but the fun is leaving it very rapidly. The controls are unforgivable. It's making the challenges next to impossible. I dunno what they were trying to prove by making the entire thing stylus-only, but ugh. Why the hell can't we use the control pad to move like in any other game ever?

*awaits pointless argument*

The simple challenges that don't screw you completely over with shoddy controls are still fun, though. Example, had to bring a baby back to a king and queen. After experimenting briefly with the nearby sleeping stork without success, I finally just stuffed the kid into a suitcase and hobbled back with it.

I then took the lesson to a later, more challenging puzzle -- I had to transport a princess, so I zapped her with a shrink ray and also used a suitcase for her. Perfectly valid response!

Edit: Also finally just got around to beating Bionic Commando Rearmed, but am disappointed to have not gotten that third BC unlock -- I probably have to do it in Ultimate Meatpile Train Suplex Mode, or maybe even the freshly-unlocked Supreme Thunderpoops Train-Eating Psycho Hyena Speed of Sound I Have Bazookas for Teeth and Yo Mama is Fat Mode. Which means I'm probably never going to bother.

Rock Band 2!

Non-Guitar Hero guitar took some warming up to, but the better part of my problem with it was actually screen calibration. Feels pretty good now. Haven't tried singing or drums yet, mainly been sticking to bass.

I'm afraid of the Rock Hero and Guitar Band games because new ones are released so rapidly. And I don't need a bunch of giant controllers laying about. :p
Yes I know old controllers work with newer games, but it's becoming like the Sims expansions if every major band is getting their own Guitar Hero game.

NeverWinter Nights 2. The story writing seems hugely improved, with there being more room to get involved with individual character stories and impact the outcome in various ways. It's also great you can now gain character influence and things. That asides, it's terrible in so many ways.

Zero72
19 Oct 2009, 19:58
I'm tempted to get Brutal Legend, but I need to watch my budget. :-/

Edit: Really, really frustrated with RB2's calibration situation. Drums and guitar do not work ideally on the same calibration, which is made even more annoying by the fact that it took me a good hour to arrive at the guitar's ideal calibration.

e: Found a pretty happy middle-ground calibration setting, now I'm back to loving it. I was particularly amused when Munkee and I were invited to do a high-budget music video shoot and we were both shredding on Spoonman with all these graphical filters all over the whole thing, making us basically look like laser outlines against a white background. It's all the customization and sheer personality that help me enjoy it that much more. I kicked over a camera, Munkee destroyed his guitar during the finale, fun stuff.

Playstation Home needs a lot of work. ...That said, I just hooked up with a couple of my ex-coworking friends in it, and we had the fortune to find an unoccupied bowling lane, where I spent entirely too much time and stayed up way too late. I had a lot of fun catching up with the guys, and it was a pretty fun environemnt to do it in. So, for what it's basically supposed to be, it shows promise.

I might even consider dropping 5 or 6 bucks for one of those nifty apartments.

Tekken 6, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Dungeon Crawl (crawl.akrasiac.org).

And since I traded in a spare copy of Arkham Asylum for its full value in gamestop store credit, Fallout 3 and Bionic Commando PS3 are there on the shelf waiting for me to get around to them, and I still have roughly the value of another decent, oldish used game left on a card. :p

Tekken 6 is highly satisfying in its intended vs-figher way, but the mostly-mandatory campaign mode is a colossal pain in the ass and an almost entirely badly designed thing which would probably only be tolerable with a competent human player 2, because the AI helper is not only an annoying character but also a stupid ****ing **** *** the *** over **** ** ***** without ****** all over town.
Arkham Asylum does everything right.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is pretty fun by yourself, but WAY fun with, say, your actual brother. Too bad he lives out of state.

And Dungeon Crawl is punishing, even by roguelike standards, but any game where you can play as a vampire that fights by distilling potions out of dead things, vaporizing them and then throwing them as vicious poinonous potion bombs has to be pretty fun.

Bare fundamentals, neato shoreside wave crashy effects (http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/8637/belchthunderthevio18reg.png).

Stone is a rarity here, but otherwise it's pretty neat. We have lots and lots of wood, which can be used in most of the same ways.

FutureWorm
12 Jan 2010, 08:31
playing the demo put the idea in my head of buying the game, actually. it really is like a rhythm-oriented warioware, especially when you get to the remixes, which combine multiple stages into one song. i don't really have any complaints with it so far, after clearing all 27 main stages and a few bonus stages, except maybe that the ping-pong level is ridiculously ****ing difficult. still, you can skip over any stage that is giving you too much grief, and that's the only one that was unduly challenging.

also, every once in a while, you'll get the chance to unlock a special extra feature, such as hilarious written "diaries" or the opportunity to listen to the in-game songs on a jukebox. however, each of these challenges requires you to complete the entire stage without a single error. this is possible on some of the easier stages, but some of the later stages - especially the bonus stages, which are faster and longer versions of the main stages - are extremely difficult to pass, let alone perfectly. furthermore, you only get three tries until the chance disappears.

so yeah, that was the only area where i thought the challenge level was perhaps a bit higher than necessary, but it doesn't really take away from the fun factor, because unlocking those extras isn't a necessary component of the game. and there's definitely a sense of accomplishment once you do manage to clear a perfect. what's more, it doesn't feel like grinding, as playing through each individual minigame of warioware for 100% completion does.

Fillmore's moving right along (http://i.imgur.com/rzcD9.jpg). Finally caved and started putting some industrial zones on the far west because the residential zones were just too dang far from the ones across the river, but I'm keeping the density light, so pollution is very low and the supposed transportation problems have pretty much vanished. There's also finally a bit of traffic on the river, income is finally stable without having to take impossible levels of literal trash from the neighbor (in fact, the incinerator is now outpacing the town's trash output at a substantial rate), crime is next to nil in most of the city, and aura and land value are looking great. Life is good!

An alien "attacked" moments ago, but it was just a single saucer which skirted the edge of town for a bit and flew off harmlessly. I do wonder if it might just be a warning of assaults to come, though.

Edit: I just saved and quit on November 11, 1955. Help me think of something to commemorate. Something I can name after Doc Brown. Maybe a landmark, preferably something resembling an old town hall or courthouse with a clock on it, but I'm not sure if those can be renamed.

Sharing a world and a pretty sweet house with Munkee and Ray, we've discovered an unbelievably, incomprehensibly labyrinthine cave complex under a desert, and I've begun work on a second House Made Totally Of Glass, this one on a much grander scale -- already bigger than my first one, and not even half done yet. It's pretty cool if you're a person that doesn't get splitting headaches from steroscopic 3D.:p

That and calling it 'slightly improved' is selling it short! The whole game has been given a face lift, from the textures to the character models, everything that was a flat sprite in the original is now a 3D entity by necessity. It looks very nice indeed! An improved portable version certainly beats the jankyily emulated Gamecube re-release, not to mention my N64 game Pac got left in the sun for a year and now suffers enormous cutscene glitches that make it unwinable.

It's really no different from buying a HD re-release of a game you've already played or even a Blu-Ray of a film you already own on DVD (or even VHS).

Well, for one, it looks pretty as hell.

Another thing is that the 3D doesn't give me headaches. I experienced some minor eye strain the first couple of hours using it, but after that my eyes adjusted or something. Been playing with the 3D cranked all the way up since then with no problems, and I'm really enjoying it.

The only thing about the 3D that really sucks is the very limited viewing angle(the motion controls on this game when aiming/looking around are awesome, but almost impossible to use when 3D is on without losing the "sweet spot"), and the very noticeable crosstalk when looking at anything with a high contrast. For example, looking at anything that is bright or luminous against a dark background will give you (faded) triple vision of that object.

Also having the maps and menus on the lower screen make a really big difference. The only thing I wish they had done is to allow you to also map items to the control pad, which isn't used for anything.

Oh, and I never finished the game, only got halfway there. So I still have half a new game to enjoy with pretty 3D graphics. :p

It's really no different from buying a HD re-release of a game you've already played or even a Blu-Ray of a film you already own on DVD (or even VHS).ah. fair enough, I'd assumed it was like most of the other graphical upgrades you see where you get slightly higher resolution textures and it pretty much just looks the same. I only played a few minutes worth and only in a small area. Deku Tree entrance, specifically.

Deus Ex Human Revolution. Just :cool:indeed. It is fantastic

Been playing Blur multiplayer after nabbing it on a Steam daily sale and I'm having an awesome time. I love racing games where I can shoot at the competition, and despite the real cars it's still a very mindless arcadey racer. Plus it has its own multiplayer framework with full online and LAN support (a rarity in PC games these days) with lobbies and ranking and up to 20 players in a race. :D

I really can't believe it didn't sell well and sank Bizarre Creations :( I can easily find ~200 people playing in the PC version anytime.

I bought it too over a year ago, because it's one of the only racing games that still have split-screen multiplayer. Even 4-player split-screen on PC, which is pretty much a rarity.

And yeah, I like arcade, vehicular combat racers, which also have a good physics engine, so you can play the racing on its own too, not getting bored fast without the shooting.

That's why I still love Acclaim's Re-Volt from 1999, which I think is the best racing game ever, followed by Apogee's Wacky Wheels from 1994. :D

"Over the past three years since our purchase of Bizarre Creations, the fundamentals of the racing genre have changed significantly. Although we made a substantial investment in creating a new IP, Blur, it did not find a commercial audience. Bizarre is a very talented team of developers, however, because of the broader economic factors impacting the market, we are exploring our options regarding the future of the studio, including a potential sale of the business."

It probably didn't help that they released Blur alongside ModNation Racers and Split/Second too. :p

Speaking of Re-Volt, there's a bunch of guys who got their hands on the source code of the XBox beta version (Re-Volt Live), which was abandoned after Acclaim went bankrupt in 2004.

The guys have already released a few betas and alphas for the PC version with many bug fixes, compatibility fixes and a few new features.
They are also planning to include a split-screen mode, since the Xbox beta also included code for it.

More Re-Volt goodies:
About a decade ago, I extracted, converted and compiled all the "lost" additional cars from the Dreamcast version and several PC demos into a pack for the PC version.

While I enjoyed Blur as a splitscreen multiplayer game, I couldn't get anywhere in the singleplayer modes. It's unbelivably sad we'll never get another Geometry Wars though.:(

Split/Second was a complete blast (besides the punishingly hard time trials) however! While I haven't played it in months I've still got it's amazing electro-orchestral soundtrack (http://soundcloud.com/split-second/sets/split-second-soundtrack) on my MP3 player. Too bad Disney disolved Blackrock Studios. Split/second 2 could have been something special.

I've gone from an HP Elitebook 2530p (Core 2 1.86GHz & Intel GMA 4500MHD) to some Asus with two 2.4GHz procesors and a GT 540M. From something that can barely play anything, to a laptop that can play a shocking amount of new games, especially as it's only a 13" chassis.

I'm currently finally playing Deus Ex: HR. My question to you all is:

While I'm reminicing about cool racing games: Full Auto was a magnificent mash up of Burnout and wipeout with a SOT style rewind meter and destructable environments, Jak X was was a legitamately good kart racer with a great singleplayer campaign, and Burnout 2's boost chaining system has yet to be bettered.

And there will never be a better motion-controlled racer than Excite Trucks.

Skyrim was very good but it sort of lacks closure. I stopped playing after ~90 hours and having beaten the main quest, which is worth doing as it takes you to a lot of cool places. But the game doesn't really end, the main quest is over just like any other quest.

But overall it was a great experience. I got to see many neat (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/612717265868961004/C97736A9654112BA462B6FE9E7950E2C7F367E22/) places, and I even conquered some tall mountains (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/612716583476087885/9F42D518EEFB8DE72AD1CD39540CCE62DFA6E417/). There were many great characters to meat, and some encounters left me feeling thoroughly confused (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/558686660297243065/E4F5FA5841C2A7326FB24EC85510116776ACB828/). But for the most part I got to make meaningful decisions about what happened in Skyrim, and I even got to help people in great need (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/558686660297252173/4BF51D6B89FF7CA71BB674BCF763FF06E3CDD966/). However, all good things eventually have to end. After many exciting adventures and fought with many terrifying foes (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/558686660297763979/56700488B1B1F5E40126A34C59465B38B530477C/), my horse that I had with me since the start of the game suddenly died (http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/614970636794992482/94B588A1A062DC20E9DC4BE8D77EDFC521D6489F/) without warning (when fast traveling I think). I felt it was probably his time to go. He had been with me for probably 70 hours, so I didn't load a previous save. And then many days later my companion, who had been with me for nearly as long, fell to her death in a boss battle near the 'end' of the game. This too felt important for my character's story so I committed to it and pushed on. I had pretty soon saved the world from certain destruction, but I had lost my friends that had been with me up until now. I got a new companion but it was just not the same. I felt like the game was over, I could no longer continue playing with that character. *tear*

I will eventually revisit the game, probably when they release dlc. It feels like I only scratched the surface of the game. :)

I'll play D3, yeah. But there's so much I've missed on with having a crappy Intel integrated as my only graphics card. I got jerky framerates with KOTOR and KOTOR2. They're pretty old, in gaming terms. So much to explore now!

As for Skyrim, I imagine I'll enjoy it. I loved Morrowind & Oblivion.

Bioshock is worthwhile.
I stopped playing Fallout 3 soon after leaving the bunker because I could not stand the basic mechanics of the game and the UI infuriated me.

My problem with Skyrim and Oblivion was that the gameplay got very repetitive very quickly and once you've done the Dark Brotherhood quests, you've done the most interesting quests in the game. But yeah, if you enjoyed Oblivion and Morrowind, you'll like Skyrim (presuming the simplified stats system doesn't hurt you in some weird way).

There's also Starcraft II if you like RTS games.
The Mass Effect games are pretty good too, but ME1 has the most retarded inventory and equipment system possible and again, gameplay gets pretty repetitive.

Personally I've always had more of a fancy for Flatout than Burnout, though I only tried its last open-world bretheren and that sort of thing really didn't appeal to me.

Flatout seems to be much more the kind of game that is really silly and wreckless and rewards the player for it, while Burnout just makes the silly wreckless look cool. Maybe I just played the wrong games in the series though.

I would recommend the Assassins Creed series, which I'm quite a fan of. The oringal Assassins Creed is horribly repetitive and would have been enough to completely put me off if it weren't for people telling me AC:2 was loads better; and it really is. It's maybe worth playing the original for the story (since the games are heavily story orientated) or perhaps just read its Wiki entry or watch a YouTube play-through instead and skip straight to AC:2. AC:2, AC:Brotherhood and AC:Revelations are all great games. And I'm pretty physced for AC:3 in October.

On an semi-related note, I've a list of games I have not touched as of yet, which I am intending to get through now that my final year project at Uni is completed:

Half Life
Half Life 2 and subsequent episodes
Bioshock
Deus Ex
Mass Effect
Uncharted
Skyrim
Batman: Arkham Asylum

Probably not in that order. ;)

Burnout is an interesting series in that it's all over the place. Paradise isn't a bad game, and it's comendable how much free DLC and suport it recieved after launch but it's point-to-point racing essensially forced you to learn taxi driver levels of knowlege about an imaginary city in order to win.
Also they didn't let you restart failed events until months after release, forcing you to drive half way across the city just to have another go.

The games with actual tracks are generally a lot more fun! in order:

Burnout: An awful punishing game! It's selling point was it's detailed crashes but participating in one would practically lose you the race. Crashing also halved your current boost meter (which filled painfully slowly) so the better you were doing the more you were punished! a 'Burnout' was performed by using all your boost meter in one go, your reward was having it half filled again.

Burnout 2 Point of Impact: Sublime! Less punishing difficulty and a faster growing boost meter made this one a much more fun to play, but it's true genius lay in the new improved burnout system: Your reward for a burnout was directly tied to how dangerously you drove during it. Drive dangerously enough and you're rewarded with a full bar. Getting a good chain going is amazingly exciting and intense.

Burnout 3 Takedown: At this point Criterion got bought up by EA so say hello to EA Trax, and the everpresent DJ. This game completely threw out B2's boost system, and instead let you use boost as soon as you earnt it. This was the first game game in the series that made it imposible to perform the titular burnout.
The game's big gimmick was 'Takedowns' i.e. forcing your opponents to crash by ramming them. Takedowns were the big boost earners as performing them would enlarge and fill your boost bar.
Not my favorite entry in the series, but a fun enough game regardless.

Burnout Revenge: The only traditional burnout in HD and it will remind you of that fact ("if you haven't played burnout in HD, then you haven't played Burnout at all!": the game's intro). Ironically availiable in SD on the PS2 and Xbox.
Very much in the B3 mold, the game added Traffic checking, which turned the previously dangerous same-way traffic into deadly weapons and is quite silly. A lot of emphasis on takedowns with a bunch of new varieties like vertical and traffic checking.
While it originated in B3, this game was the first to use the 'Crashbreaker' in races, opening the floor to even more takedown variaions.

Burnout Dominator: Bit of a wierd one! Developed by EA UK, but credited to Criterion regardless. Criterion were close to finished with Paradse at this point, so naturally this only saw release on the PS2 and PSP.
Like B3 and revenge, Dominator let you use your boost as soon as you earnt it, however letting the bar fill rewarded you with 'Supercharge boost', which would (finally) reward you with a burnout if used all at once and the chaining system made a welcome return.
This game basically played as the best of both worlds, combining B2's emphasis on chaining with B3/Revenge's emphasis on combat and made either one viable (although traffic checking was mysteriously absent).
This might be my favorite in the series, had it been released on the gamecube or the Xbox. As it is the PS2 controller is hells uncomfortable and the loading times are ludicrous.

But I liked the soundtrack actually, and the takedowns were a lot of fun, except in rated Road Rage events where you needed a crapload of them. Still, I think I completed everything.

Been holding out on buying them and waiting for a super pack with them all included because currently @ 320x4=1280...
I'm not sure exactly how much more it will add to the game overall.

Does anyone here know if and when an offer on these packs will be available on xbl ? And/Or if a super pack (containing all 4) is planned ?

Oh man, I was addicted to that game for the longest time. I clocked over 300 hours by the time I finally gave it up. I still regret that I never managed to complete my perfect armor, goddamn rare charms are too rare and not very fun to farm. :c

They are fun to farm if you have friends to play with online!

I've now got my Lagi armour full upgraded (not the Lagi+ though, which I will get at some point for the Awakening skill) and I'm working on a bunch of others. But yeah, getting the right armour spheres is a real pain, especially later on when you basically have to do 5/6* city quests to even have a slim chance of getting them.

I think I've probably clocked far fewer hours than you did but I could be wrong. I've been lucky enough to have 3 other hunter friends who I've hunted with regularly since day one. I'm finally starting to catch them up in terms of HR and stuff.

Man... I can't wait to get home and kick some Agnaktor butt for those last few claws...

Well, the best way to farm for timeworm charms is afaik to just go mining on the lava map on a high level quest I think. Basically, mine all the spots, then wait a couple of minutes for them to respawn, repeat the process until time runs out, complete whatever quest you were on at the last second, and then be disappointed when none of the charms you got is the one you were looking for. I don't think even having friends around would make it any less boring. :P

You're making me want to give it another shot tho. I guess I could plug my Wii back on. I wonder if it still works... :p

Unless you are extremely lucky, it will take you forever to get the Horns from the high level Lagiacrus. Also yeah the Volcano area is the best place for farming all types of armor spheres, all types are farmable offline, online LR and online HR.

Still Pokémon Sapphire. I'm a bit stuck in how to get to Lavaridge Town, but I found Fallarbor. I think that's the wrong order though.

I didn't get Worms Golf yet... as it was only on offer to apple users/people. I will likely be picking it up very soon though. ;)

I did get Worms Reloaded (with all the dlc) and WUM from steam during that time. I'm really, really enjoying these games. What great value and really good fun they both are ! :) THANKS T17

Did you play the N64 one at all prior? From what I've seen the Reloaded version while looking a lot better, censors too much for me to be interested in trying it.

No, i've been after the game for years but it's too expensive. The cartridge alone is going for around £100. So i settled for the xbox version. I am very aware of everything that's been censored and i'm not happy about it. What's the world coming too.

I've always been a fan of Rare's games particularly Banjo-Kazooie & Banjo-Tooie so i had to play this eventually.

Just completed it, it's a good game.

I both own and have completed the N64 version, and I can confirm it is an excellent game. The graphics are easily the N64's finest - up to near-Gamecube standard - and it is completely uncensored, with the exception of the F-word, which while bleeped is still discernible. A fantastic piece of software and well worth a play if you can do so.

You have about a 40% chance of getting the Horns+ from Lagiacrus if you smash his horns during the fight:

Also yeah the Volcano area is the best place for farming all types of armor spheres, all types are farmable offline, online LR and online HR.
Also, this suggests (to me, at least) that they can only be mined online:

Anyway, I recently got L4D2, Lollipop Chainsaw arrives in a few days and I'll be getting LEGO Batman 2 soon, too, so MH3 is kind of taking a back seat for a bit unless I get pestered to play :P

So it turned out I have misplaced my copy of MHTri, along with DKCR's case. So I'm SOL until I buy the game again, because finding something in my house is about as likely as finding Waldo in a place where he is not actually present.

I'm playing Worms (well, duh, everyone is) and Portal 2.

Portal 2 is the best game ever. If I were you I would buy it without question, or look up reviews and videos of people playing it. Whatever... suit yourself!

Final Fantasy 7, for the first time. The writing is a lot better than the later games, but geez the battles are boring! Is it just because I'm this early on, or are they always going to be brain-dead "Don't do anything but attack and heal" affairs?

Angry Birds Space - PC version.

I'm downright impressed! Wouldn't have thought that Angry Birds could possibly be that fun, the variating gravities each level are a nice addition. Most importantly though there is a feature that approximately shows the trajectory of your bird when you are taking a shot. Not sure if that's normal for the PC versions but it's great and makes it all less a game of luck, other than the boring iPhone versions :)

Most Final Fantasy game battles are like that in my experience, but there are some rather interesting boss fights coming up, along with some of the most bizarre creatures I think I've ever seen in a game. And FFVII's slabs of pure plot are marvellous beasts. Great game.
