just wanted to draw someone using a dragonball, and saffya seemed a good, generic candidate for that. bandana added to her sig for the sake of showing it's just a weapon.

I don't really remember the fireball from the game being white, but I'm just being picky. Nice picture.
Although the highlight under the headband seems odd, as it's brighter when it's further from the fireball.

Although the highlight under the headband seems odd, as it's brighter when it's further from the fireball.it's actually equally bright, but now that you mention it, it really shouldn't be. didn't think of that :p
and actually, the 3 colors of the dragonball are there, I just took the liberty of making it shiny (IE making it a Linear Dodge layer) and that turns it whiter than it was. I also used a bit of white anyway to make it look generally better (read "shinier").

Alright, where should i start? *evil grin*
First and more importantly, i like the new perspective and poses you're giving to the worms. It adds more to the pictures than you can imagine.
Your lineart seems rather flickery. I don't know if you're making it directly into Photoshop or whatever with a tablet or scanning then. If you're going with the second option, i'd advise you to ink (digitally or otherwise) your lineart before coloring for the sake of homogeneity (believe me, i know it's a pain, but it turns out for the best).
On the cliff image:
• The hair, which Mr. Pyramid smartly pointed out and gave rather precise instructions on how to correct;
• The worm seem tilted to the right side for no apparent reason;
• The lineart is a bit inconsistant. Sometimes it's too thick and black, sometimes isn't (i know you pointed that out yourself, but i'm talking about thickness here, not colour);
• The background seems a bit poor. Maybe you could add some stuff before the horizon line. This' not very important as most people don't even draw backgrounds but it's something that worth the attention.
• The... cliff... with...the... lair... seems... pointy on the top... or just... weird... i can't quite put my finger on it... the perspective of the bottom part seems fairly right, but the top... there's something wrong there...
On the dragonball:
• The whiteness doesn't bother me... it's seems good.
• There's some weird highlight leaking from the bandana to the worm there. That's wrong.
• The highlight itself isn't very convincing as it doesn't affect the hair, body and scarf.
• And when you prepare a fireball, you leave the bottom hand with the thumb pointing away from the body and the upper hand with the thumb pointing to the oposite direction. So your hands are weird. :p
Good job in general. I particullary like the one with Saffya. Keep it up!

The top gives the impression of being a round structure, because of that sahding, that I think it's the problem, while the bottom gives the impression of being a straight structure
And I'm not sure if I made my point clear :-/

First and more importantly, i like the new perspective and poses you're giving to the worms. It adds more to the pictures than you can imagine.oh I realize. and thanks :)
Your lineart seems rather flickery. I don't know if you're making it directly into Photoshop or whatever with a tablet or scanning then. If you're going with the second option, i'd advise you to ink (digitally or otherwise) your lineart before coloring for the sake of homogeneity (believe me, i know it's a pain, but it turns out for the best).keep in mind that these are still my first few drawings on a tablet. I'm still getting used to the whole "actually drawing" thing.
• The worm seem tilted to the right side for no apparent reason;not sure what you're meaning here.
• The lineart is a bit inconsistant. Sometimes it's too thick and black, sometimes isn't (i know you pointed that out yourself, but i'm talking about thickness here, not colour);where are your problem areas in this regard? the sign is the main culprit of the overly black lines, so if that's where your complaint is, it's probably just the thing I pointed out. aside from that, I guess the worm is a little thicker than the rest, but that's mostly just my own getting used to actually doing lineart.
• The background seems a bit poor. Maybe you could add some stuff before the horizon line. This' not very important as most people don't even draw backgrounds but it's something that worth the attention.it was kind of a last-minute thing and I didn't put the effort into it it needed to be actually good. I'll figure something out to keep me from spending too much time while still making a decent picture next time.
• The... cliff... with...the... lair... seems... pointy on the top... or just... weird... i can't quite put my finger on it... the perspective of the bottom part seems fairly right, but the top... there's something wrong there...possibly you're having trouble with the perspective? it doesnt' exactly fit in with the background at all. in-perspective you wouldn't see the flat grassy area at all. perhaps that's where your issue lies?
edit: the background was a last-minute addition. guess I shouldn't have bothered :p
• The whiteness doesn't bother me... it's seems good.huzzah!
• There's some weird highlight leaking from the bandana to the worm there. That's wrong. under the bandana? it's meant to be a glow reflecting from the bandana, but yeah it's definitely a bit too vibrant there.
• The highlight itself isn't very convincing as it doesn't affect the hair, body and scarf.yeah, I've realized that as well since posting it.
• And when you prepare a fireball, you leave the bottom hand with the thumb pointing away from the body and the upper hand with the thumb pointing to the oposite direction. So your hands are weird. :pcharged many magic fireballs in your life, have you? :p but yeah, I see what you mean. I guess they're backwards. oops!

Actually, the top of that cliff could actually be a slope, not parallel to the ground.
If the gradient equals the perspective, it would look that way.

Could, but then it would be "pointy" like i said previously - and rather unnatural - and the door and the sign would follow the slope degree... I don't think that's what Aku was aiming for here. :p
keep in mind that these are still my first few drawings on a tablet. I'm still getting used to the whole "actually drawing" thing.
Don't worry... mine is too. A tip i can give you is to use the eraser just as you use the pen/brush. People tend to use the eraser just to erase mistakes, but you can use it as a powerful tool to get your lines straight and homogeneous.
not sure what you're meaning here.

When you get the tail right, you make the body tilt... that's not good.

Indeed, it's mostly the worm and the sign. If you spoted that already, i think you'll make the necessary adjustments in the future.
charged many magic fireballs in your life, have you?
I lost the track of how many. But i'm like Dan... my fireballs are puny and weak. I've always wanted to learn the Yoga Fire, though. :P

I had a second look on the image, and all you'd need to do is to raise the horizon and all the background stuff up a few centimeters.
Right now it the whole grass plain and the cliff look as if they were standing on a slope which is descending towards the viewer.
Either that, or they're on a very small planet.

Actually, no, bonz. That is (or at least seems as it was suposed to be) isometric... paralel lines never intersect. :p
I'm saying this cause Aku use to draw isometric stuff all the time, so i suspect it was his intention here. His mistake was to mix up isometric and conic perspect. Isometric does not have horizon lines.
And i believe Aku should drop the isometric stuff as it's artificial and designed to fill some very specific niches.
Isometric does not have horizon lines.
Well, it actually does. Infinitely away though, which is hard to draw on even the widest screen and highest resolution. :)

The shading itself is good. I can't add much to it. Maybe it's a bit too detailed for such a small resolution, but that's more of an option than a problem.
The lineart improved but still look a bit blurred or something. As if you made it with a soft brush or something.

That's about it. I can see improvements. Keep working on it!

The grass looks really bad, and i think you know. The sky looks like it has been taken from elsewhere and poorly resized.yeah, I realize how bad the background is. I wanted to practice it a bit but the result just wasn't what I wanted. possibly because neondragon hasn't done anything with a big, open background so I couldn't look at how to draw a field in her style. It's not bad at all, my only criticisms being that it doesn't looks straight (his 'foot'/tail is at an angle), he's leaning to the left an unholy amount, and his tail looks wrong - there's far too much overlap between his back and the top of his tail. It sort of looks like he's sticking out of an apple... or rock... which he is part of... ummm... visual tip?:

I have to say I really like his brow and eyes. There's room for improvement but they're really cool - not at all wormy in the classic sense yet very fitting to the image.
I wouldn't focus too much on getting things looking anatomically correct - it's a cartoon image after all, so the jaw line is fine as it is, IMHO. :)

Vader did my job pretty damn well up there. I can't say much more than he said aside from: that angle of leaning is, indeed, possible - but only in dynamic situations. Much like people with their legs stretched straight up. You can't hold that position for nothing in hell. Same goes for the worm. I that was an action pose with something going on and a reason for the leaning, it'd be all good.
I agree the brows look nice and the shading of the mouth looks odd. You should've tried to follow the lineart there and properly shade the wrinkled lips (at least i think those are wrinkles).
Your shading is better, indeed, but there's room for inprovement. You should've tried to, first, enphasize the volumes on the picture. You did that on the jaw but forgot to do the same with te brows, the mouth, the eyes and so on. You should always try to shade them properly keeping in mind the volume they'd had in "real life".
Keep it up and remember: Think 3D - Draw 2D

Cool beans, though the right hand looks kinda weird. (Why would he even hold the staff like that? That must be rather impractical. ~_^) And the perspective seems a little odd...I can't pin down an example, but something just seems off. Maybe that's just me and my delirium though.

30 Jul 2009, 13:49
(Why would he even hold the staff like that? That must be rather impractical. ~_^)not particularly. I posed myself holding my own Bo staff to check the feel of the stance before I started drawing. your hand being like that is pretty close to a few hand positions that work rather well, so that position makes for a decent staging position, which is basically what's needed in this pic. I'm not particularly trained with said bo staff, so it may be impractical in a serious fight, but at first glance it seems to work decently enough.
as to the perspective, I'd love to know what's wrong there, if you can find something to pin down. I'm not seeing it myself.
For perhaps the first time in any of your pictures, I think you needed an extra effect. Mainly, the flame hand; its too dull as it is. I only realised it was meant to be illuminating the place when I noticed the shading.
Otherwise, t'is good. The background probably could've been a little more complex, but good nonetheless.

Nice. His left hand could be bigger, though. And maybe the staff should be more ornate if it's for casting earth mojo, but if it's only for combat, at least some cloth wrapped around the middle.
Do excuse my nitpicking, though. :p

Do excuse my nitpicking, though. :pyeah, his left hand bugs me a bit too. wasn't THAT bad, so I just kinda hoped no one would notice seeing as I'd redrawn it like 8 times :p
I somewhat agree with the staff thing, but I dunno if it's worth the effort to put wrappings or something similar on the bottom half :p

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... therefore your eye is WRONG.
Your eye errs most dangerously indeed.

I just don't have an official sigworm because I lack anything that might bear even the slightest resemblance to artistic talent or creativity :p
Therefore I have a few unofficial sigworms which have appeared in various comics, usually consisting of a partially eaten apple and the letters "U" and "M".

That looks pretty good. I like the stylized angular style.
Kinda looks like a fresh cave painting to me :) Looks good, the flatness of it vs the shadows though make it hard to believe it's got depth (hence me thinking it looks like a cave painting). Still great stylistic representation!

So I've been doing a series of video game-inspired low-poly 3D renders, to practice both my modelling and lighting (not so much the texturing as pretty much everything have been lamberts).
Anyway, I did one based on the Hell theme and with the general inspiration of Worms 1. enjoy. Also check out the rest of them at my blog:
