I have another game that uses it :p It's Mario VS. Donkey Kong 2 for the DS, and let's just say the FMVs in it are not pixel perfect... so maybe the quality in the DS version is bad because of the codec...?

the DS version has bad quality?

It could be better, but that might be more due to the bitrate rather than the codec. I wonder if some commercial game will ever use the MoonShell DPG format rather than ActImagine. I kind of prefer that format, as the artifacts are smaller (though you lose some crispness and have a somewhat low framerate - 18FPS or so is about the best you can do for fullscreen).

I've got got lots of games that use ActImagine. Like Metroid Prime and Lunar Knights. Both of those games had brilliant FMV sequences, to the hardware's limits. I think its the DS's low resolution screens that make the FMVs seem a little 'pixalated' for want of a better word.

Considering they only used a 32MB DS card, i'm surprised they had room for FMV at all.

Yeah, I just noticed that 2 minutes of decent-quality DPG video takes up about 9 megs of microSD space. I would imagine even more compression was used on W:OW2 though, just based on how pronounced the artifacts are in some of the clips. I kinda wish they'd make the videos available in mp4 or something like that. Maybe wait a few months to a year though, just to give more people a chance to earn them in the game.

I personally think that using a format that creates larger files is a baaaad idea, for the following reasons:

1. The FMV sequences are neat little addons, but do not contribute to the game in any meaningful way
2. The FMV sequences are certainly not unwatchable, I mean for a 32 MB cart, they're darn good.

But it would be neat if T17 released the FMV sequences (and the theme from them!!) on the intertubes in a high-quality format.

That's what I meant.

Pixellated is not the right word. They have a lot of compression artifacts.

Also, the fact that a game has good graphics says nothing about the resolution of the screen. The screens themselves are 256X192 (I think), and that's very low resolution. Even NES/SNES ran at 256X224.
