I noticed after our match that you are ranked #5. I was in utter disbelief at this because you were by and far the worst player I have faced.

Please, when you're losing a game, don't teleport to the top right corner of the cave and then blow torch across the entire map for 32 minutes.

That's called darksiding. It's quite an old tactic, and what stopped you from teleporting in and killing him?

Xilas

There is only one teleport per team and I used mine to get to him in the left corner of the map after traping him with girders. He then teleported to the right corner of the map and used that.... "tactic" as you called it.

Worms has a very large strategy element. Darksiding has been around since the creation of Worms and will remain. When faced with a darksider, actually spend some time thinking about how you're going to get to him.

Darksiding is a tactic. There is no other word for it.

Bunkerbuster is the best lightside weapon :D However sometimes it just doesn't go deep enough :(

My nick shows I have both the light and dark siding qualities when playing worms. :D

What did you think I did? Skipped the go for half an hour? I shot his paths open so that he was trapped and then blasted his face.

My complaint here is that when you've obviously lost, pull out the white flag and let's get on with round 2. "darksiding" your last worm for the sake of prolonging the game is poor sportsmanship.

Maybe sudden death was his only chance at that point.

Just because you are outnumbered doesn't mean you have lost. That's one great thing about worms, if you are decent player, it doesn't matter if you have two worms knocked into the water at the start, you can make a comeback. Sudden death can make a huge difference but unfortunately the default schemes have a really long sudden death time on DS/PSP (at least most of them do).

Any sufficiently advanced tactic is indistinguishable from cheatingSome find honour in sportsmanship.

Some find honour in playing to win.

Some even find honour in both.

And some find honour in not giving a damn about honour.

I felt a bit like you about this at one point, but I've mellowed considerably. Darksiding is a tactic, same as any other tactic, and when you've got no other options, you use it. You might prefer to go out in a blaze of glory, but hey. If you felt that strongly about him being "unsporting" in trying to secure victory over heavy odds, you could have disconnected and given both of you a loss (Now that's an idea...).

OK, I suppose that I'll join the discussion now...

Yeah, darksiding is a perfecty legal tactic... yeah, it's annoying, but it is a part of worms strategy. No way around it.

And unless you have an awesome arsenal of weapons at just the right time, it's the only easy way to survive long enough to do one-on-one, if you've lost all your other worms before your opponent...

I remember one time, I lost three worms in the first turn of a match. My third worm dug into the center of the landscape and managed to (with haste no less) take out three of my opponent's worms. I then dug down to his fourth, and would have won, but a slip up on my part earned a sheep to the face, and I lost...

My point is that even I think it's annoying, but it is a strategy that I use. Not because I like to irritate people, but because it's a good strategy when you have nothing left... and by nothing I mean nothing at all...

Xilas is so good, I should probably pull out the white flag after he's taken his first move. Or what round would you prefer me to surrender on?

The point is, he hadn't "obviously lost". I've won of a few occasions by using this tactic - I love it.

the thing i get upset about is his ranking, its redicilous and im trying to work him down, i just hit 102 in total and 16 in ropes so as i hit #1 in ropes i should win a couple of deathmatches to knock him off the leaderboard.

This is from the creator of worms Andy Davidson. It appears he frowns upon darksiders very very much. Of course non of these "tactics" apply to the handheld version anyway.

________________________

Sometimes it is necessary to use 'dubious' tactics, usually to get rid of persistent Dark Side players.

* Accidently drop the joypad while passing it to them.
* Insult them constantly during the game. This works best if everyone joins in, even if they aren't playing, and will usually result in the Dark Side player storming out.
* Point out that the three-eyed tree is looking more evil than usual. This will un-nerve them, but check that you have a three-eyed tree before trying it.
* Throw various objects at them. This usually starts with pencil's and stuff but can end up with chairs and sharpened Wooden Giraffe's if they don't give in easily.
* Fake serious illness, such as a collapsed lung, if they start doing well.
* Accidently turn the machine off at the mains if they're about to win.
* Throw everyone out of the house - although this can cause problems later if it isn't your house. "

^^^ Lol thats pretty funny.

Anways I use a blend of lightside and darkside. It depends on the situation, your weapons, the map, and where your worms are. Darksiding is a tactic that you sometimes need to use to adapt to the situation. There are counter strategies, work them out and use them. Whining doesn't do anything.

I agree that the tactic is useful. Digging your worm in and then making a few well aimed shots and being able to retreat is strategy. I completely agree with you guys about how a smart player will use that to his advantage to try to even the odds.

In the case I am trying to describe, the player had many an opportunity to atleast try a shot. However, he simply continued tunneling or just letting his turn run out. I mean, how do you get to rank 5 and not know that skip the go isn't so you can watch your worm skip rope for 30 seconds but you actually press A and end your turn? Anyways, beating this guy is worth 55 ranks (I went from 102 to 47). I'll be trying to get in the top 10 in the next day or two.

He was screwing with you while trying to force the game into sudden death. :)

Xilas, what's you're tag on worms? I want to look out for you in the top 10.

I played Hidden Village a couple of nights after you posted your original message, he didn't see too bad to me. I'm sure I've seen his name in one of the Awards lists, like worms killed or lost, and he had a massive score. I think he must have played a ton of games to get so high, which may explain his rank. Anyone know how the rankings are actually worked out? Is it total number of wins, win percentage, points system?

Xilas

My alias on Worms is Lik. I think we played last night.

As to rankings, I played Mike's awesome who was ranked 5th when I was 37th and he won our first match. However, my ranking did not move. When we played again, I won and then I was bumped to 21st.

If you're reading this Mike, I loved our games. It's nice to play someone who knows how to use a rope. Too bad every round started with atleast 3 worms dead in the first turn due to stupid placement (3 worms in between 3 barrels right above the water level - check.)

Are rivals any more likely to meet each other in ranked matches or is it only for "rival matches". If so, whats the point seeing as we don't play none-ranked matches?

Yeah, that's what I did in W:OW1 challenges. the last few were so hard That's the only thing that you could do.

If you check the 'time played' logs you'll see Hidden Village has played for over 60 hours at present, 25 hours more than the person in 2nd place.

Someone needs to get out more :P

Maybe not by your standards, but I think most working individuals would be hard pressed to find 60 spare hours in a week, let alone fill them with videogaming. I don't even get that much time to sleep in a week!

... and relatively it IS a lot, as the next person down the list is a good 20 or so hours behind.

I suppose that would make it a bugger to do. College certeinly strips away my gaming time.
