Courier-Mail link doesn't seem to work for me...

Gamed.nl (http://www.gamed.nl/view/31305) (Dutch) gave the DS version an 8.5

DS version: Gamepro.com (http://www.gamepro.com/nintendo/ds/games/reviews/132528.shtml)
4.75/5 ( = 9.5 )

And another nice one
DS version: 1up.com (http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3162501)
9.0

I got my copy of NGamer, the UK's number 1 unofficial Nintedo mag.

They gave the DS version 85% and said:

"Crammed with strategy action stuff to play on your own or against friends. It's simple, it's retro and it's extremely hard to put down once you've started. An excellent package on DS."

That's just the little summary at the end of the review.

Quick translation of pros en cons
Pros:
* Vereint die besten Features der Serie (Unites the best features in the series)
* Gute 2D-Präsentation dank beider Screens (Good 2d presentation because of both screens)
* Steuerung erlaubt schnelles und effektives Handeln (Controls provide quick and effective handling)
* Interessante neue Waffen (Interesting new weapons)
* Umfangreicher Onlinemodus (Extensive online mode)
* Viele Editier-Möglichkeiten (Lots of editing options)

Cons:
* Keine echte Story (no real story) (wtf?)
* KI zielt teilweise zu präzise (AI is too precise sometimes)

And they gave us an award for the multiplayer :)

RealVG bumped both their scores up by 1 point, so the DS now gets a 9 and the PSP gets an 8.

And Ben's always complaining about mark inflation :p

But fair enough, these games probably deserve it.

I played the games a bit more last nigth and this morning, and felt 7 and 8 out of 10 was a bit harsh considering these are the best handheld Worms games to come out since WWP Ngage.

Although getting the guy who runs the no. 1 Team17 fansite to review the latest worms games probably wasn't the least biased of opinions...

Just a hunch.

Team17 made Kingpin. That sucked. They also either made, published or co-funded Miami Chase, Full Contact, The Speris Legacy, Alien Breed 3D II: The Killing Grounds, Apache, Phoenix: Deep Space Ressurection, Worms Forts: Under Siege, Worms Open Warfare DS, and Army Men: Major Malfunction. All of these games are, IMHO, not fantastic. Spadge even told me himself during an unexpected bumping into in London last October that Army Men wasn't a great game.

There's being a fan. There's being a Fanboy. And then there's being a Real Fan - someone who appreciates good output but has the guts to say that something is bad. I fall squarely in the latter category.

I refute that Kingpin sucked actually. It was a budget game that played an OK game of Bowling, just like it set out to do. It also went to the top of the charts!

As a developer we haven't too many skeletons in our closet and sometimes there are additional reasons why we develop certain titles. It's true that in other circumstances we wouldn't have chosen (if that's the right word) to develop one or two of the titles. The games industry periodically throws up difficult periods for independent developers and in those times you're left to develop what publishers wish to publish - simple as that, particularly if it means survival, which is a strong word, but the only one that actually has meaning - ask many of the indies that went under.

BTW Team17 didn't develop or publish Miami Chase. Andreas, Rico and the group responsible for our early hits developed it prior to the formation of Team17 and it was placed with Codemasters for their budget range.

Well it's subjective opinion, isn't it? If everyone liked the same things we'd live in a very boring world indeed. I personally found Kingpin to be rather dull, but then I know people say the same thing about Arcade Pool and its sequel which I rather enjoyed.

Which is pretty much what you told me at the time. I believe your exact words were "If we hadn't made Army Men we wouldn't still be around today" and in that regard I'm glad it kept you guys ticking over, as it were.

The Team7 logo is displayed in the intro, which I'm aware wasn't any sort of formal name for Team17 during the Early Days, but I generally choose to lump it together with Team17's Amiga titles. That being said, the reason I didn't like it was because the first time I played it was about three or so years ago, and it's not a game that ages well, I think...! The games press raved about it at the time, though.

It's perhaps telling that the earliest games I remember playing are New Zealand Story, Bubble Bobble and the Thundercats game, all on the Amiga. Miami Chase wouldn't have appealed to me then, largely because it wasn't a platform game (although I did like Pipe-Mania).

I enjoy writing reviews from time to time for Nintendo's NSider forum, and here's my take on Worms: Open Warfare 2 for DS:

The official nintendo mag gave it 87% :D

Here is its comment on the game:

Open warfare 2 cleans up the glitches of the first game and throws in loads of new features, inlcuding online play. Its the same old worms at the core, but it's the franchise at its best.

To keep this thread for "official" reviews only, I've created some polls for forum members to give their own score for WOW2.

And, if you've played the DS version, go here: http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34048

I have found the only You Tube video review for the DS version.

Not sure if this would really count, but it is nice for feedback in video form.

I saw a review for WOW2 on Gamecentral on Channel 4 Teletext. They gave it 7/10. Much more improved than the previous one which got 4/10. I think it was the DS version.

The GameSpot review is finally up.

http://www.gamespot.com/ds/strategy/wormsopenwarfare2/review.html
http://www.gamespot.com/psp/strategy/wormsopenwarfare2/review.html
They're both exactly the same review though.

It got a 7.0, which seems reasonable, given their bias (which I mentioned above). These two sentences pretty much sum up the rating:
"There are lots of weapons, plenty of single- and multiplayer content to
dig into, and enough customization options to really hook established fans. At
the same time, efforts to diversify the Worms experience aren't mind-blowing,
and the game doesn't go out of its way to reel in new players."

I think that's fair enough, though as an "established fan," I of course rate it higher.
