View Full Version : PSP Demo?

Did anyone try clicking the link in the homepage of W:OW 2? It only brings me to the mobile version of the game. Does T17 have any plans to release an actual demo?

If it is a dowloadable demo like i previously said, then yes, very likely. But more likely from the www.wormsopenwarfare2.com website.

I wonder if there are any DS magazines that come with "demo cards" a la demo discs?

Silly question, really. I mean, there are fewer demo discs now anyway...

Okay, first and foremost, a lot of people in this thread need to learn to form sentences properly. Really. it's really rather sad to see so many people with such a poor grasp of grammar and setence construction. I will forgive people for whom English is not their first language, but only up to a certain point. I'm sure that even in your native language, only one question mark is necessary.

Secondly, asking questions with rather obvious answers is a bit stupid. "Do we send off for a PSP demo disc?" is rather obviously answered with "Of course you bloody don't." Sony didn't spend all that time implementing downloadable demo support for the PSP so they coudl waste money sending out UMDs, did they? Really. that's just silly.

As for the DS demo, I don't think it's likely but hey, it's be nice.

Gah!

Stupid PSP firmware update!

Wormetti
17 Aug 2007, 18:59
It works fine on 3.52 M33 (unofficial custom firmware). The music in the demo is extremely repetitive but fortunately you can lower the volume to nothing before you play.

There is only 1 map. You can play pass the PSP with 2 players or you can play against one AI opponent. Worms have hats. Each team has different coloured worms (green, blue and pink skin).

These are the only items you start with and there are no weapon/utility crates:
Bazooka (infinite)
Grenade (infinite)
Shotgun x 2 (unusual to limit shotgun ammo)
Mine x 2
Fire Punch x 2
Blow Torch x 1
Jetpack x 1
Dynamite x 1
Electromagnet x 2
I'm looking forward to the full game, this demo doesn't show much but at least it's better than nothing :)

The demo can now also be [downloaded from Dream17 (http://dream17.co.uk/softography.php?id=110&s=downloads#id90)]. Because we're nice like that.

Wormetti

You can adjust the fuse on some items that don't have a fuse (like the mine). That extremely minor bug was fixed in the update for Worms XBLA. I hope all the relevant fixes made to Worms XBLA are applied to the full version of WOW2. I can't test for the "drop multiple weapons from a rope glitch" or the "thin-airstrike" glitch since those items aren't in the demo.

Nice to see the AI thinking time has been reduced compared to the original WOW. The worms have more expressions and thought bubbles. Barrels still don't leave fire but they do send you flying if you intentionally blowtorch one.

An AI worm used the blowtorch (didn't hurt anyone) and the game thought it was worthy of a replay. Sudden death started soon after that.

I hope this isn't the final build of the game...

There are many problems like the following:

-Mine has adjustable fuse which doesn't even work anyway
-Health crates can only land on the upper parts of the map (if this is part of the gameplay, well that just sucks)
-Crosshair isn't aligned properly (you have to aim a little lower)
-Grenades stick to barrels
-Worms bounce and slide too much (sorta like slippery mode)
-No sound when back flipping

I haven't played W:OW 1 so I'm not sure if some of these are intentional.

I also read that this game will feature downloadable content. If this is true, can some of the Teamsters tell us what kind of stuff will we be able to get.

Cagnazzo
19 Aug 2007, 20:41
Well I just downloaded the demo today and it does appear to be more along the lines of a tech demo - sounds missing or inaudiable, grenades sticking to oil drums (which don't explode in a shower of flame) and some conspicuous lag when the items are placed on the map lead me to believe this.

I'm sure the final product won't be like this - if it is it'll take some work getting complacent with it.

I cant answer for any possible minor bugs, but crates never did fall through land. That's a gameplay feature. They hit land and stop. It means you have to be up top and vulnerable if you want to pick them up.

I disagree about the crosshair, I think its bang on.

The worms slide exactly the right amount (far closer to the original games).

If you had seen "many" more problems why didnt you list them?

in my native language i'm allowed to place one or three for emphasis. same goes for exclamation mark, and i can also combine these two punctuations.

i distinctly remember, in earlier titles, crates teleporting into sub-terrain areas, even in non-cave levels.

Rattlehead
20 Aug 2007, 11:10
I didn't mention the other problems because I was thinking that since it is a demo, they were intentional.

Such as:
-Blocky background (compared to the W:OW 1 screenshots I have seen)
-Very short and repetitive BGM
-Recycled worm sounds (the same worm voices are used for different events)
-No slow-motion worm voices during replays

Other things I've noticed that might be part of the gameplay:
-Replays happen even when nothing spectacular has happened (very rarely)
-Dynamites go through worms
-Barrel explosions hardly do any additional damage (place a dynamite on a worm on top of a barrel = 68 damage only)
(unless barrels are more of a "pushing" tool than a "damaging" tool)
-Mines, compared to other weapons, have a higher max damage radius
-Camera doesn't focus properly on the new objects that have been added during the "Bermuda Triangle" event
-During a replay, when you pause the game then resume it, the slow-motion effect disappears

EDIT:
-Grenades bounce when placed (like a dynamite) on top of worm

I tried it again, and this time it didn't bounce off... silly me.

Another thing that bugs me is that I've heard from other people that there was hardly a load time in W:OW 1 when starting a map, is the load time only in the demo because of a hardware limitation (memory card instead of UMD)

Luther
20 Aug 2007, 11:29
i distinctly remember, in earlier titles, crates teleporting into sub-terrain areas, even in non-cave levels.

Crates would teleport into cavern levels, otherwise they would drop from above. The teleport method of spawning a crate was mainly reserved for scripted sequences, like mission pickups.

The point is that you must expose your worm when collecting a crate. Evil, sneaky Darksiders that dig in and hide their worms dont get crate drops as easily as the noble Lightsider. The price that the Lightsiders pays is vulnerability to strikes and being blasted or bounced into the water.

I'd like to address some of these issues that you guys have mentioned, things aren't as bad as they first seem -

Blocky backgrounds - The landscapes are at the same resolution as W:OW1 so I can't see how they would be blocky, infact different sized landscapes have been added to W:OW2. The tall landscapes give a different type of game.

Very Short, repetitive BGM - Yes, the BGM was shortened and looped to make the demo size small, same goes for the worm sounds (we picked the smallest speech bank).

The slow-motion voices do work, it seems that if you pause the game and come back the pitch resets - which is a small bug really.

Dynamites are placed away from the worm so that it doesn't get stuck inside them, therefore if you place a dynamite directly in a worm it will push it back out. This solves situations where worms can get stuck and cannot move, which is far worse.

As for the other things said about the game, some are design issues (not really my bag) and others issue are really minor. Every game I've played have a list of niggles and minor points that aren't exactly how I'd like it, and it's easy to focus too much on them sometimes. The important aspect is having fun and enjoying it and the positives usually outweigh a number of minor problems.

The demo really is a small subset of the full game, we have got so much content in this version. Glad to see many of you are enjoying the demo, I look forward to the release... :)

three umd demo disks on my table shipped from sony underground to my house free of charge say that you're wrong again. want to go for best out of five?
And how many demos are on those discs? Is there just one? As a fellow Playstation Underground subscriber, I... yeah. Your point is moot, good sirrah.

Blocky backgrounds - The landscapes are at the same resolution as W:OW1 so I can't see how they would be blocky, infact different sized landscapes have been added to W:OW2. The tall landscapes give a different type of game.

I think the blockiness is more noticable in WOW2 because we're not looking at hulking great Aztec pyramids or towering Big Ben or a sinking ocean liner. We're looking at a pirate ship which has rope attached from the mainsail, etc. A thin line is going to be far more noticeably pixelated than a large green leaf. It didn't bother me, personally - I'm aware of the console's limitations.

Very Short, repetitive RGM - Yes, the BGM was shortened and looped to make the demo size small, same goes for the worm sounds (we picked the smallest speech bank).

I must be the only person in the Universe who likes the demo music... :o

If it was longer it wouldn't be so bad, it just got on my nerves after hearing it repeat so many times. It won't be an issue in the full game, they just had to keep the demo file size down so people with 32MB memory sticks could play it.

i think it's vary little off target. here is what i did: i used the blowtorch and mad a tunnel then steped back in the hole. i then fired it(with full power) and it went a bit down hurting my worm and hiting the floor not the wall. Also when i use the shotgun i aim it right at my enemy and it mostly misses. but when i aim a bit up it hits right on.

Well the demo was alright, but it didn't give a good picture of the final version. The weapon selection was wayy too limited, they should've used the standard scheme for the demo and added more new weapons to it. Not to mention you can only play one map, which can't be randomized in any way.

Next time please make a 25-50+ MB demo for those of us who bothered to buy a proper Memory Stick instead of using the crappy 32MB stick which comes with the console :P I own a 512MB memory stick myself and I find it a bit annoying that devs always shrink down the size of their demos. And I doubt anyone uses the 32MB stick for anything else than savegames + some music tracks.

I mean, I might as well play the original W:OW, the demo doesn't have much new stuff in it except one new weapon, a different landscape + background, and one music track. Shouldn't the demo showcase new aspects of the game instead of being more of the same? Anyone who has played the original OW won't find anything interesting in the demo. And new people who haven't played the game before might get a bad feeling about the product after they have played the demo.

On to the good stuff...the full game sounds really neat- can't wait to use all of those weapons seen in the weapons panel and make my own levels plus play online. Liked the music selection, it fits quite well to the level theme. The track could've been longer though. The idea of changing weather/background/etc was fun too- I hope all themes ulitize it. Thank God for letting us have teams and colors again :D

it was kinda hard thinking about it but it was useful in repel mode when you are far from enemies and they try to shoot you so the funny thing about it is the bullets that the enemy throws goes back right at him or the direction of the bullet shot from high angle goes to his own men

atract was a differen story though but i put it in the enemies footing and it seems that the mines goe after him :D

but the stupidest thing i done with the magnet is putting both attract and repel together with a barrel close together and when shot will cause a gigantic explosion thats the time when i won the high flying reward

Does anybody know if Team17 is going to release another demo of W:OW2? Because I definately think they should make a new one with a different map and fixed bugs. Demos are about interesting the uninterested so that they buy the game when it's released, and to be honest, if I judged the game by playing the demo I definately wouldn't buy it, even being such a big worms lover. But anyway I'm sure the actual game with be completely different. And I'd definately be reassured if a rebuilt version of the demo was to be released.

Company forums are a place where people can freely vent their spleen. They function a bit like a Complaints Desk. If you look at somewhere neutral, such as NeoGAF or the Penny Arcade forums, you'll see a far more positive response to our games. Its just the way it works. Also, some hardcore long-time Worms fans know EXACTLY what they like and complain like hell if you change something. They're the vocal minority and this is where you'll hear them. Of course, those same people can be very useful for finding bugs that have slipped through the net... once you filter out all the ranting opinion.;)

I dont think its a bug. If its a draw, it takes you to a diff map with a few blocks and one worm from each team.
