First of all, this isn't a competition, it's just a thread to try to get people here to use paint in a way that you make detailed art rather than a scribbled piece of rubbish. Make anything you like but spend time making it, as they can take some time.
Secondly to actually know what to do, you need to read the tutorials, and I also suggest looking at PixelDam, which is a website set out as a town in isometric view where people make houses/shops/garden/whatever and add it on. Some of them are truly spectacular and must've taken ages to make.
[ Tutorial 1 ] (http://www.pixelfreak.com/v3/en/tutorial0.html) This is the tutorial I used to make my first pixel art building.
[ Tutorial 2 ] (http://www.natomic.com/hosted/marks/mpat) I haven't gone through this one myself but it came up on google and from looking at a couple of pages it should be helpful.
[ Tutorial 3 ] (http://www.deviantart.com/view/2866522) This one's reasonably useful too.
[ PixelDam ] (http://www.x-panded.com/pixeldam/index.asp)
Just have a look at these blocks at PixelDam:
[ Serene Watergardens ] (http://www.x-panded.com/pixeldam/blockinfo.asp?bid=203)
[ Castle ] (http://www.x-panded.com/pixeldam/blockinfo.asp?bid=208)
These aren't meant to be 10 minute jobs - the longer you spend making them, the more it pays off (although, do keep this thread active by posting things you have changed to whatever you're making). Let's see what all of you can come up with:).
Some of you might have already seen them but here's a couple I made. The first is the one I made when I started using the tutorial, and the second is one I did more recently after I started doing pixel art again.
NB: These must be done in paint (or any other similar program which doesn't use anti-aliasing or whatever it is).

Question 1: I still can't find anywhere a nice guide to drawing cylinders in Isometric 3D (I'd like to know how to draw cylinders because, of course, I want to make 3D isometric steam engines). Any ideas?
Question 2: Why Paint exactly? If we promise not to do any fancy effects, what's wrong with another program (One, for example, that actually has a rational approach to object and layer selection)?
double post edit
Case in point. I admit that the Q1 had a square boiler casing (not that this is a Q1). But square wheels?

I've not done it in pixel art much (and when I have I've just winged it), but isometiric cylinders are a pain. Vertical ones are easy, as the circle is just squashed, but horizontal ones need a skewed circle, and that's not easy to draw. I think the best way is to do it a bit at a time, starting with the top and bottom of the circle, and the sides (where it's the same as a square, I suppose) and filling in the curves afterwards. We were asked to do it by first drawing a circle with a compass and taking measurements to be mapped onto isometric guidelines drawn with a 30/60 set square.
But that's from tech drawing class, not pixel art class.

Heh, we just cheated and used this template one of us found in a cupboard, saved a LOAD of time.

1. I'll have a look around
2. Any program which doesn't have anti-aliasing will do. I just couldn't be bothered to try and spell it:p
It's looking nice PP.
[ Tutorial 4: Circles in Isometric ] (http://videotuts.webcindario.com/videotutos/videotut7/isometric_circle_paint_matriax.html)
If that doesn't help much then improvise. That's what I did on the weird green thing I did on the rounded edges (although it took quite a while).
Another Tutorial, this one looks like it's very helpful and contains a lot about pixel art. Also note that for some reason clicking onto the next chapter will take you to the previous chapter and vica-versa. So click previous chapter to go to the next chapter:p. This tells you how to texture, create shapes, shade spheres, and even drawing people. I think this has to be a must read tutorial, infact I'm reading it now and that's why it's taken so long to edit this post...

Well, I'd say draw the circles inside the squares and clean up the squares afterwards...

But if you can see the tops of buildings, you must be looking down and you can't easily see the sky from above. Unless they're really tall buildings, I suppose.

Why does the top of the worksurface change colour halfway along? Oh, and you should fix up the top-right line in the kitchen. But you're definitely getting somewhere.

Anyway, PP, the guy who did the 5th tutorial couldn't do the circles right. Have a look at the plates and the base of the chairs on the kitchen (Chapter 6). They look like they're tilted towards the 'camera'.
Anywho, after seeing that kitchen, I think I might try one - or maybe a whole house altogether (although no doubt, I'd give up half way through).

Anywho, here's my kitchen so far. It's far from finished, as you can see. I may not even make the cupboards wood after the trouble I had with texturing them - it just made them look like a wood colour which has lines going across it:rolleyes: So far I've given it a granite worktop and notice the slight gradient on the oven and compare it to the hood above it.

My first pixel stuff!!! :
Star Worms
20 Aug 2005, 14:19
Nice start, try and work on the lines - they don't look quite right. Constructive criticism: In some places on the cylinder it is more than 1 pixel wide. There's also a pixel missing from the top of the brick wall, and make sure that all the bricks are the same size. Very nice shading on the cylinder, but I think the colours on the sphere are too light/dark compared to eachother to make the object seem smooth. Try making the dark colours slightly lighter and the lighter colours slightly darker. Nice grass, but I think it could do with a few more light/dark pixels.
Edit: Also on the brick wall on the right hand side at the top corner, there is one pixel too many on the vertical line. This shouldn't be there because you only include the pixels which run along both lines (which is the edge of the wall which shows its depth (the one which is going across 2 and down 1)). Although that pixel is included in the vertical line, it is not incuded in the other line. If you can see, it makes the line go across 2, down 1 and across 3. Try and avoid these little things because they're more noticeable than you may think.
double post edit
Also, middle lines on the left and right legs of the table need highlighting because they are facing the light.

Rather than using black lines for the roof tiles/brickwork, use a darker colour than the colour on the surface. So for the roof, use a dark red for the tiles, and then highlight it with a pale red.
Edit: Actually there isn't enough room for the highlighting on the roof, so just use the dark red where the black is.

They are. If that house were looked at from any other angle the roof would look rather daft.
Oh, and there shouldn't be a highlight along the top edge of roof-tiles. Roof-tiles are applied overhanging at the top, so rain water runs off them and onto the next tile, rather than building up between tiles where it might leak into the attic. Details.

The sides of the big pizza shop are at 45 degrees, not 22.5 as all the other buildings in this thread are, and while that's not wrong, it would be if it were put in the same picture as all those 22.5 degree lines. You have to be consistent in any picture.
Well, unless it's a rhomboid pizza shop. And a huge one at that.
Oh, and the letters should really be drawn on the side using lines at the same angles, otherwise it looks like they're sticking out of the wall on little flaps. You can't just doodle anything in pixel art and expect it to look realistic; it's far more like technical drawing than sketching.

What you've done there is really more like drawing a worm using only lines at certain angles -- that's not really the same thing as isometric drawing. An isometric would mout be something of a pain to draw, because it would still have to be curved. Your best bet would probably be to draw an isometric "skeleton" in a lighter colour and then flesh it out. And then, only if you've had a bit of practice with pixel art.
What you call 'skeleton' lines are normally called construction lines.
AndrewTaylor
24 Aug 2005, 13:22
Yes, that's the correct term. Thanks.
It's been about six years since I did technical drawing class, and a couple of years even since I've had to use it for anything important enough to warrant bothering with construction lines. I generally just wing it and it turns out OK.

Areas to improve - the brickwork and roofwork. For the bricks, don't make them all inline, shift each second line across a bit. The roofwork should just be like the brickwork but at a different angle and with different colours

Does the remote not need a line of sight to the TV, then?
I thought it was a sort of wireless, motion sensing lightgun.
AndrewTaylor
11 Aug 2006, 22:48
Apparently not. I know there's a sensor strip you can put under your TV for it. I don't know what that does. There's a light gun in it, so that needs a line of sight, but then, it would. But by the look of the golf demo, some part of the motion sensor doesn't.
My guess -- and that's all it is -- is that the tile/motion sensor (the two are equivalent) doesn't need a line of sight, but the absolute position sensor (insofar as such a thing can exist) does.
Paul.Power

Does the remote not need a line of sight to the TV, then?

I don't think so.
You put a thin-strip-thingy on the top, and then it can figure out where the controller is in space, and can detect it's movements.
So it doesn't have to face it, but I think the black sensor on top has to be open. For instance, when using a television remote, you can hold the thing backwards and you can still change the channel, but cover up the sensor on the top, and it doesn't do anything.
