Lag or a bad connection. I've seen things like this myself...once, three worms fell into the water randomly. Best bet is to finish the match so you get the rewards and then reset your connection. I'm actually surprised...if you right-click on your Internet connection icon in the bottom right of Windows XP and choose repair...it actually helps you connect better next time.
