I think you can get away with a 200pixel-square avatar without it being annoying, and I've posted up whole comics in 9.8kB, but really I don't see the point. Any picture that doesn't fit in 100pixels-square isn't "iconic" enough to be a good avatar anyway, and there's no reason at all for them to be larger, other than for profile-pimping purposes, and we have MySpace for that. (I say "we". Other people have MySpace for that.)

It's not supposed to be about the avatar anyway, correct?well it's sort of like a logo for a company. sure, you COULD have your logo be a full-sized romantic-era oil painting, but it would kind of lose its impact. the avatar should just be a simple representation of the poster in some form. whether it's an icon, a character, whatever. full-scenes work in avatars as long as it's small or animated tastefully, but too much rather defeats the entire purpose.

In addition, changing your avatar every 17 seconds doesn't really contribute to recognition value.
That's why I have basically only used one avatar since 2003 before my current one:

Why aren't there any links to team17.com or the Team17 Shop on the forum? At least the Team17 logo at the top should link back to the website or something. I dunno.

Down the very, very bottom of every forum page, on the right hand side is a link to the T17 homepage.

Dunno why there's no links to anywhere else on T17.com...

I have a suggestion. How about an automatic pm when one of your posts gets deleted/altered by an admin. There is nothing more irritating than realising noone answered your question because they never saw it, due to a slightly obscure wording

I have a suggestion. How about an automatic pm when one of your posts gets deleted/altered by an admin. There is nothing more irritating than realising noone answered your question because they never saw it, due to a slightly obscure wording
Few problems with this:

1. To do it automatically, based on the "delete reason" that's filled out whenever a mod deletes a post (unless it's deleted from the premoderation queue....) would require a hack, and I'm not sure if such a hack exists

2. To not do it automatically would create a shedload more work from moderators to manually send PM's out

3. It will probably attract even more PM's back when people whinge about us deleting their posts.

4. It wouldn't work with edits.

5. It would be quite a load on the servers, particularly if we mass-delete a country-full of spammy posts.

It might be possible to do such a thing via the infraction system and just issue a warning that explains why the post was deleted but this is bad for the following reasons:
1. It'd fill the already-overflowing mod forum up with pointless warning notices. It's all or nothing - we either have notification of infractions AND warnings posted (which is very handy) or neither.

2. We'd have to click even more buttons to delete a post, as we'd have to warn it, type out the reason for deletion, then submit that, then delete the post.

3. The servers would probably blow up, as the warnings would have to have an "expire" time, so it'd be constantly calculating those.

4. People probably wouldn't like receiving a PM entitled "You have received a warning: Notification of deleted post"

A good and worthwhile idea, but we'd have to find a very good way of implementing it which wouldn't cripple the servers or the mods.

No there isn't, because it would place a stupid amount of load on the servers and would probably cripple them and result in a large number of database errors.

I remember reading Zeor's signature and it said something about a custom status? Can someone shed a little light on the situation on what that was about and why it's no longer there?

quakerworm
7 May 2008, 07:32
there used to be custom statuses back in the day given out for this and that. some where given as results of competitions, others for various contributions to the forum. i really don't know why they took these down, but i think it was around the same time that they updated forum software, changed the look, and locked out anyone who isn't registered.

Plasma
7 May 2008, 07:49
The custom statuses were removed around the same time as the regular statuses based on post count. The regular ones were removed due to people spamming to go up in ranks and because they caused elitism. I presume the custom statuses were also removed due to elitism.

Zero72
7 May 2008, 08:13
Pretty much that. Lots of people got them from winning contests back in the day, but I was one of the 8 who were given custom statuses (statii?) just for being cool, and as a sort of celebration thing for the release of W3D, as we were also given W3D avatars made specially by Team17 themselves, in a special 100x100 size which was totally unique at the time. ...Those were the days.

Best part of the story in my case is that Team17 originally only had 7 in mind, but I was tacked onto the list by popular demand. I didn't even know it was going on until I got the E-mail. I felt so honored.

Hmmmmm, about the automatic PM thing... This could be the PM you get if a mod has deleted your thread...

We are writing to inform you that a mod has deleted your thread.

Please don't PM the mods to ask us why. You will be infracted. All the best,

The Team 17 forum.

This could be how it works...

When a mod deletes a users thread, it automatically sends that PM, (i'm just using that PM as an example here) to the user that created the thread. And if they ask you why, they get infracted. Do you think that sounds fair?

If you could make it like that, i don't know, but this will probably be the best way for it to happen.

It's not a question of wording the PM, it's a question of implementing it in the forum and installing the necessary hacks, and considering server load. The PM database is pretty huge and there's enough PM's flying around with infractions and warnings.

A couple of days ago I removed 15-odd posts from a thread using the mass-delete function (which deletes them in one go) - these posts were made by about 4 or 5 users. Now comes the problems: The system will send 15 messages out, as 15 posts have been deleted, and using said example one user who shall not be named will receive about 6 or 7 PM's saying they have had posts deleted. Now, let's say said person has only 3 spare "slots" in their inbox before it fills up - that's 4 messages that are going to be undelivered and must be accommodated for in the hack (thus requiring more processing power to decide if the user has enough spare inbox space to accept the messages). Also, what happens if the person is on Being Watched or their posts are deleted after they have been banned by the infraction system (we infract first, then delete) - those users won't get their PM's and the system will blow up.

In my opinion, it's an unnecessarily complex solution to a problem which really doesn't exist.

Also, that's stupidly harsh saying that you'll be infracted for replying to the PM. That makes us come across even more evil, mean and nasty than we already are.

No, think of the server that powers the forum having to do even more work than it does, making the pages slower to load for everyone. This place has enough "Database Errors" as it is - something like this PM system would only make it worse.

why is there a 20 second waiting time when refreshing the new post page?

To slow down the posting. Example: some people have realllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyy slow internet connections. They will be tempted to keep pressing the button repeatedly. Now, if there was no limit, there would be 20 or so posts (depending on how many times the person pressed it) to delete. Waste of time? for the mods, yes.

Depends. Broadband+ users would be slowed down to dialup speeds, but dialup users would still get dialup speeds.

hmmmmm, just a question.

Is there a limit for the ammount of threads in this whole forum?

Yes, when the server runs out of storage. Got quite a while for that to happen yet tho.

why is there a 20 second waiting time when refreshing the new post page?

Because searches are quite processor-intensive and it's to stop people overloading the poor server.

But also for that reason as well.

The last thing mods wanna do is delete 20 posts of someone who is impatient.

The flood-limit on posts is even longer, I believe. But I can't check it because it doesn't apply to mods :p

I've noticed that IMG tags are not acceptable in signatures.

Why is that? i understand that animations might screw up the forum, but why?

Or is it because of forum server space?

GrimOswald
10 May 2008, 13:09
Some reasons off the top of my head:

1: Very easily abused, you would end up with obtrusive and annoying signatures all over the place (Speaking from personal experience in forums that enable it).
2: It would take longer for each page to load, especially for people with slow connections.
3: On a similar note, it might bog down the server. Not that I know anything about that stuff.

Someone more knowledgeable than myself might give you a better answer though.

No, images never go near the forum.

But an [IMG] signature could, say, let someone get usage stats on the forum, let someone find out IP addresses, and so on. Granted you could do that with an inline [IMG] but nothing like as effectively.

But mostly, it's because it would be[I] incredibly annoying.

Squirminator2k
10 May 2008, 19:14
Also looking at Yauhui's forum (and lots of other forums), people would have ridiculously large images in their signatures and it's get irritating.

thomasp
10 May 2008, 23:20
There's very few forum-side limits on what type of images people might put in sigs with IMG tags. This means that people could put 100Mb images in their sigs and you'd have no real option but to download them, or even have 10000x10000px images. Also, with 30 different sigs on a page (for example), it'd take a lifetime to load all the images even on a 10Mbit connection.

I personally hate forums with IMG tags in signatures, so am glad this one only allows basic vB code.

Online orgy and the national forum say no to this.

thomasp

International is the exception to that rule but doesn't really generate the traffic to make typing the exception worthwhile.

Online Orgy is a tricky one as its topics which are relevant to the community but should ideally be as T17-related as possible. Sometimes if there's a worthwhile topic which isn't related to T17 but is of wide interest to the community we'll leave it. OO isn't black & white - it's a bit of a grey area and we tend to moderate it on a "thread-by-thread" basis.

Mods can't read every thread though, so we rely on members reporting posts which don't meet the rules.

thomasp
30 May 2008, 12:31
This has been mentioned hundreds of times.

Team17 pay the server bills and bandwidth bills for this forum, so they say what is included and what isn't. They don't want to pay for all the additional bandwidth that off-topic forums would create (bandwidth is expensive stuff), so they say they don't want any on their forum. And that's what will happen. Team17 have the final say on anything that's posted on this forum, they can remove anything they want for no reason.

If you want your own off topic forums go and create one.

Erm, is there any chance that you'll change the smiley :p code from :p to :P?

:P is easier because the colon (:) requires the combination of SHIFT and semi-colon (;), and it would be easier to hold SHIFT down and continue to press the "P" key than to release the SHIFT before proceeding to press the "P" key (especially for fast-typers).

And may I ask, how long is the flood control?

thomasp
5 Jun 2008, 12:33
I'd get quite annoyed if it was changed to ":P" from the current form, mainly because I've got into the habit of releasing the shift key after just one press, much the same as if I was typing a capital letter at the beginning of a word. In fact, it's no different to that. Takes me the same amount of time to type :p as :P.

Flood control is at least 30 seconds (don't know for certain, because mods are exempt), and no it won't go down because it'll just allow the spambots and cheechbots to post even more nonsense to flood the modqueue.

In fact, it's no different to that. Takes me the same amount of time to type :p as :P.

Erm, why not add another code for the :p smiley, but not include it in the smilies box?

That way, both :p AND :P can be used for the :p smiley.

Flood control is at least 30 seconds (don't know for certain, because mods are exempt), and no it won't go down because it'll just allow the spambots and cheechbots to post even more nonsense to flood the modqueue.

I wasn't asking for a decrease in flood control time.

I'm just asking because some of my forum members were complaining that the old 20sec flood control which I have set was too long, and with much debate, they finally convinced me to change it to 10sec

 Shad, if you are reading this, HA!

Not an option. If you add a smiley code then that smiley goes into the smiley box. And then we'd have thirteen smilies which is just bad :p

And using the swear filter would just be a recipe for trouble.

How about a new ranking system that detects the amount of succesful threads that have been posted by a user and detects the amount of posts that have been posted by a user and then calculates a rank according to the information. :)

How about a new ranking system that detects the amount of succesful threads that have been posted by a user and detects the amount of posts that have been posted by a user and then calculates a rank according to the information. :)the only way that works is a post rating system. those would work, but if someone suddenly stops posting like an idiot after posting like one for a while, then their status is still horrible. wouldn't be a problem, so much, but if statuses are added people will tend to judge by them in most cases.

not having them hurts nothing, having them makes some issues. I think we should bring back the old team17-awarded statuses, but again it doesn't really serve much purpose.

That would promote the elitism that the old ranks & post counts caused. Plus how would a "successful" thread be determined? Also, not everyone creates new threads around here, they just reply to other threads, and others just spam the heck out of existing threads.

Ranks on forums are generally bad things to have.

Seems fine on GPRS on iPhone's Safari and GPRS is usually hideously slow for me... One thing you can do to improve load-times is to disable avatars, signatures & IMG tags from your userCP, but that's unfortunately a user-setting, not a browser-setting, so you'd then have to re-enable them when you're back on your computer.

Not sure that volcadmin's got the time to create a new vB skin as he does have a lot of work on, like keeping the servers topped up with beer.

FYI, personally I use my phone for the odd photo, sending/receiving SMS and making/receiving phone calls. The phone is capable of far more but isn't as good as most of my other equipment at doing it. For example, my PC is better for RSS, email, browsing, gaming and socialising. If we're talking about portable devices, my PSP and DS are better for browsing and gaming than my phone, my camera is a better camera, and so forth.

The quality and cost pay-offs for having everything on GPRS and in my pocket isn't worth it. If I'm desperate to browse the 'net it's cheaper to pay 20p for 30 mins of Internet Cafe time than to do the same on my phone, or carry my DS/PSP and find a free hotspot.

So, from my point of view CJH was more or less correct, apart from the bad grammar in text messages (I use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation in my SMS).

You rank #3769, and you always will.

Time travelers. Sure, he wouldn't notice either way, but not noticing doesn't mean it didn't happen.

It's not the number of posts which counts, it's how long your posts are.

Girth also matters, apparently.

I suddenly remembered the awards they used to give out. Like Paul's Top Waffler of the Year for having the largest ratio of words per post. :p

They should bring that back along with the special statuses people had. I want my Game Junkie status back. :(

Because that doesn't work here, remember? Multiple spaces don't show up in posts. And most other characters have maximum word lengths before they space off.

I think it's time you considered retiring from Moderator Andrew, you're getting old...

Which browser? It breaks the tables in Opera. Unless you use fit to width.

I'm using a beta Chrome build. It's got as good a rendering engine as you'll find. (The font smoothing in Safari annoys me for no good reason. I think the web should look like the rest of Windows.)

I don't like it because it completely locks up when running JS.

Saay... is there any reason for W:ASO and W:OW2 staying in the New & Upcoming Titles section? Isn't it time they got moved out?

thomasp
16 Apr 2009, 14:06
We generally keep the 2 newest titles in there, so as they're at the top of the forum (at the time of updating the categories :p). And we only really update the categories when a new game is announced.

Muzer
