Yeah, that'd be the best.

We've decided this several posts ago, remember?
I think 30 replies/ 300 views is the best choice
I agree.
I don't mind what the figure is set to.
I guess the final decision is up to APJ

3 people don't make a decision. I was expecting a bigger response.

As you may have noticed, once we've suggested 30/300 the thread gone silent. This shows, that the people who visited this thread afterwards(Apocalypse, S2K) simply don't care what the figure will be set to:-/

I'll be honest- the Hot Thread thing doesn't really interest me. I mean 30 to 300 sounds reasonable, no complaints from me etc. etc., but it's not something I've been losing sleep over.

APJ
27 Jan 2004, 16:20
its been altered anyhow to 30/300 to allow those loosing sleep over it a peaceful night.

My sleep depends on what i eat for supper, not on what happens in the internet. Besides, i'm not the one who started this stuff:rolleyes:
thomasp suggeted to change the number of views/replies required to make the topic hot only to bring the thread back ontopic. I've suggested a number, people agreed. Now i just reminded you that you need to change it:)

Squirminator2k
27 Jan 2004, 16:58
True, but did you bring it back up again... do you recognise this voice?Hmmm, APj, it doesn't look like that the hot topic settings have been changed.

Let's not drag this thread down, shall we? We should get back to what matters - making this forum a better place to visit.

27 Jan 2004, 17:24
I didn't realise the hot-topic feature was ever used anyway. Do people seriously find it useful?

Personally, i judge a hot-topic by the number of posts it has. I can work that out quite quickly with the number. If it becomes 'hot' as a result of views, then that's more of a "misleading title" topic.

Down the bottom of most of the pages, there is a popup menu which lists all of the forums.

- Add forum jump to member.php.

- Add ">members" to the navbar.

- Show the sig limits on the Edit Profile screen. Have a php or javascript checker if possible.

- Make the WA Beta Support forums into proper visible forums, so that they appear on the forum jump, and so that it's actually possible to search them.

I was going to suggest PMs and vB3, but I won't for now. Even though the pop-down search thingies are super-cool.

thomasp

vB3

I think the final gold version isn't far away, and I seem to remember that APJ said he wouldn't upgrade the forum until the final version of vB3 (rather than release candidate versions) was released.

However, I reckon APJ will have left before the stable, final version of vB3 is released.

Just a suggestion, APJ, but perhaps you could create a 'Forum bugs and suggestions' forum, so as any bug reports regarding the upgrade can be kept in one place. (Psydome suggested having a suggestions forum).

I think if a suggestions and bugs forum was added (as one subforum), then it would make life easier for the mods and administrators, as they would be able to pick out what needs attention, rather than having to wade through the oline orgy spam.

Make .MID a valid file extension in the attatchment field! It's annoying having to zip up any midis I post to the forums. Midis are tiny files that are hardly worth zipping, and it would make life easier for anyone both putting midis up and downloading them if they could go up without the bother of zipping.

'The 100% off topic thread'Yeah, I'd love one of those, but that would rack up everybody's post count a bit too much... I think a 100% offtopic thread would eventually become the biggest on the forum because of the desire of off-topic-ness in this forum.

Well, if we'll get enough demand we can make it ourselves. It will still be T17 related, because the offtopic also *might* be T17 related(at least that is what we'll say to the mods). If more people will join on this the thread will live, and it won't affect our postcount(posts in the Online Orgy don't count)

Actually, that is protection against spamming in different places rapidly or using a bot to flood the forum. There's a seperate filter which says something like "This post is a duplicate of a post you made in the last 5 minutes". But I agree, both should still be kept.

Please, please pease please please PLEASE, Sel, put a Quick Reply box down at the bottom of threads! It is an absolute LIFESAVER for us 28.8 kbps users. It doesn't have any buttons, so it loads in about half a second, and since the attatchment options are now on a pop-up window, they wouldn't take up space... *takes a deep breath in*... it is REALLY helpful.
I mean, half the people on this forum use the tags instead of the buttons, so there really is no point having a whole new page for a single reply...

Do others support this idea?

tundraH
14 Apr 2004, 01:39
Yes, I'd agree. It would only need the text area and a submit button though - all other options should be kept to the full reply page in my opinion.

All of the forum regulars know the tags and smiles, so a simple text box at the bottom with only two buttons - reply and attach - would be great. In fact, my "broadband" is so unstable that sometimes I feel like a cheap dial-up user, so it would help me a lot too

thomasp
14 Apr 2004, 16:04
Another vB3 forum I visit has the quick reply enabled.

And to be honest, it is a lifesaver on my 64K connection, because it's one less page to load when I want to post a reply.

If someone wants to add an attachment, then you just reply in the standard way.

I'm pretty sure the quick reply is a standard feature of vB3

I'm willing to bet that most 64-colour GIFs (which is the colour depth W:A will convert them to anyway), zipped up fully, would fit into almost any filesize limit you care to name, especially fairly open maps. (Complex ones like colour roperace maps would take up more space.)

I don't know what W:A can read, but GIF is a good lossless compression format for things like W:A maps, and you can convert it to a bitmap using Internet Explorer at the same time as downloading it, so it shouldn't be a major inconvenience.

The only thing such users take up is good usernames, because they don't use them, and nobody else can register them. However, the campaign for deletion of old unused accounts failed, so there is no point in starting this up again

They do NOT get deleted - the registered names are still present in the database. Try registering a name which is occupied by a person who joined two-three years ago and didn't even visit the forum after joining. The forum will say that the user with such name exists, despite the fact that his profile and posts do not. Removing such users from the database completely to free up nicknames for new users to take was the actual point of that campaign, if my memory serves me right.

Next time, get your facts right before shouting at someone

Yes, they did get deleted.

Just before he left, APJ deleted a thousand or so unused accounts where people had been registered for more than a couple of months and had made no posts.

The only way a search does not turn up a result for a user (if you cannot register that name) is if they have been banned. Banned users remain on the database, but their names do not show up in searches, nor can you re-register that name (obviously)

I judge by what is happening while i'm here - and i started visiting this forum when i had probs with W:A just before Christmas. I never seen the member count decrease while i was around, so this leaves me to think that no user deletion has been done during my activity on the forum, and that's over 6 months.

Also, the number of completely inactive users has only increased. Just make a search thru the memberlist with sorting by post count on ascending. A lot of users have registered in a few months after the forum being created and never even visited it after registration, and they are still present in the database. This is my point. These users do not get deleted for over three years now. They and others like them are the ones i speak about, and the ones UX shouts about without knowing

The problem with that particularly nasty idea is that more often than not people will register to the forum to post about a technical problem with a game, and once they get the answeer they don't usually stick around. Well what happens if that person has another problem? Or if he wants to reply to a different thread, or become part of the communtiy somewhere down the line? If they come back to log in after Worms Forts goes all purple on them for No Apparent Reason, how will they react to find the username they were using now 6 to 8 months ago no longer functions?

And what about people who "dip" in and out of the forum, such as RastaMahata who usually materialises every now and then to make a few posts and then dissappears? If their accounts are deleted they may never come back - which is a shame especially in Rasta's case, as he's one of those group who actually make sense and is worth having around.

Support technical could be an open room for guests then. That would sault many problems without people taking good names, and we didn't haft to remove accounts either.

And think of the amount of abuse that would get? If someone is banned from the rest of the forum, they would go to the support boards and flood the place with useless spam, and the only way they could be stopped is to restrict posting to registered members.

Further to my post in some thread or other, I still think a forum for introductions and the like as a subforum of OO (with post count turned off) would clear a bit of space in OO, and might stop random introduction threads popping up all over the place. It might also give some of our new users a proper chance to introduce themselves without coming over like... welll, y'know.

Hello (name) and welcome to the forum, it's allways nice to see newcomers :) If you wonder anything you can always feel free to ask me :) Very nice avatar you got there btw ;) I'll give you my phonenumber over PM

1. They don't kill this sites bandwidth because they load from another site.

2. Your not stuck with the size and quality reduction, as you are with attachments.

3. Slow loadtime for images is a really really poor excuse against this, since that stopped being an issue about 6 years ago.

Also, for those interested in vB3.6 development, see this thread on the vBulletin forums: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=186803 - it lists some of the new changes (mainly admin features though), but there are some useful user-features, like multi-quoting, where you can quote more than one user in a post.

Some things hopefully won't be implemented here, like the signature image and the improved reputation system (already a feature in vB3.5) - while reputation may be a nice feature to have, it would bring back more problems of elitism. I also like the look of the infraction/warning system :evil smilie:

Is it just me or is the "New Posts" button broken? When I click it, firefox asks me to download search.php, and if I choose to open that file in firefox, it presents a page of jibberish.

It works in IE though, so I reckon it's firefox's fault. I recently upgraded to version 2, but that was a while ago and the search button still worked immediately after.

Anyway I'm just wondering if anyone else has a similar problem.

Btw, if you want to save up space, check the list of "registered, but 0 posts" list... It's endless >_<
People who don't post within x months, should be removed. If they want to look something up, they should re-register.

Please bring back the "guest" mode back, people can check out, but not post in the forums. Saves space and keeps the place clean. :)

Yes, but that person doesn't have the time to go deleting thousands of user accounts for very little gain in available storage space. Yes, I am aware that vB would do it automatically, but you still need to tell vB what to delete.

Also, it would cause havoc deleting users who have already posted - either their posts would get removed (which would screw up thread continuity - even for archival purposes), or they would all be set to "guest", so a lot of early threads would have nothing but guest users contributing.

More effort than it's worth, I think

Just because there's someone updating the website every now and then, it doesn't mean they have to do things like this - they have their own job to do. Is there anyone to change anything on the forum at the moment? No.

It's completely tactless to suggest something when there's no-one to do it, when there's no problem with space on the Team17 server. Attachments are valuable - it's not as easy to upload a zip or wagame file. They don't take up much space. They are deleted every 6 months or so. Why have you suddenly decided that Team17 needs to get rid of stuff to free up some space? They have plenty - it's been like that since the hype over W3D.

But volc isn't a webmaster - he's a network administrator and has quite a lot on his plate keeping the servers, etc, up and running.

Unlike Sel, volcadmin isn't specifically in charge of the forum, as far as I'm aware, so he doesn't spend as much time on it.

http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=542647&postcount=4volcadmin isn't supposed to run the forum (I presume), and he especially isn't meant to add unnecessary changes to the forum. Everyone in a company has their own job. That's how companies work. Volcadmin isn't a webmaster. Webmasters do all the editing of the website stuff. Team17 has no webmaster at the moment. I presume what volcadmin is doing is editing any news on the main site and just generally keeping an eye on things that Sel would do rather than taking on Sel's old job as well as his existing one, which just wouldn't work in terms of the workload - that would be why they are 2 separate jobs rather than 1. Obviously though I don't know how Team17 runs it or anything but as Sel isn't here and as he was the only webmaster, it's not the right time to ask for features to add to the forum.

There used to be an "Open Discussion" forum back in the old days, but Team17 got rid of it in like 2002 or something. They haven't brought it back, and it's unlikely they'll do so. OO has mostly taken its place anyway.

As Team17 have to pay the bandwidth and server bills for the forum, it's their say as to what goes on here. And, as Futureworm mentioned above, as the community has grown, they felt it was better to just have everything on here sort of related to T17 stuff. Probably best to create your own forum for that, or to find another one using that wonderful resource known as Google.

Now you may be thinking "Did pieman's head just explode with stupidity" well think of it like this: if we had private threads we could have less flaming because the thread creator could leave out people that make him/her mad. just think about it.

I'd considered that, but not in time to include it. It's like a kind of replying version of no-art-in-first-post, isn't it? What do people think?

Also I'd wondered about the backseat modding thing. I don't like people posting "this breaks the rules" all over the place because I'd like to use discretion and not just blindly apply mechanical rules to the forum, and having people pointing these things out where everyone can see them makes that hard, as well as generally generating a lot of useless replies, often overpowering the thread. But then, it also makes it seem a bit like I just don't want a papertrail of public posts everywhere pointing out where I do and do not choose to moderate.

Not that it makes much difference, since lately I've found myself infracting threads without deleting them, or deleting posts without infracting them, so really nobody can see what we do either way.

If you view your user profile page ( http://forum.team17.co.uk/member.php?u=66750 for tal05) it shows you when your infraction points expire. And, as I stated in the fanart rules thread, 10 points are needed for a Being watched status and 20 are needed to be banned. It's then just a simple case of working out when your points expire and how many you'll have left at that time - primary school maths. If when your latest infraction expires, you still have 10 points left, you know you'll have to wait for another infraction to expire to remove the BW status.
