Hello again! I returned to the T17 O!

At first here, my art was a fail. I practised drawing worms, until I finally did my first worm in Flash. I want to post it so that I can take advice to make my art better.

Please vote in the poll and tell me what I need to improve to make better worms. Thanks!

(I've also posted and two more pictures, the first one is of my old art, and the second was an attempt to improve my art which was a fail [don't count so much this] and the third is my new one)

(also take note, I haven't added much because this is just a test)

Edit: Also requests will be appreciated soon.

Improved, but it still needs some work. The whole worm is too rectangular. Don't use straight lines, and use the Brush tool instead of the Pencil. Also, don't use the Ellipse tool for eyes, they usually don't look good. Again, use the brush instead.

Actually, your old style was not bad, I liked the round heads. Try redoing it in Flash, but with a better body.

you have imroved a lot

McMaster
28 May 2008, 14:55
Quite members claimed my old style as "sock worms".

I still need practice with the brush. Do you see my second pic? I made it in MSPaint, and it was all made with brush, and the result wasn't good. The lines were weird.

Also for my last pictures, I did them using Splapp's guide, while I was doing my old style all myself.

Also thanks to Shadowmoon for helping me find the curve tool in Flash. In my next picture, I'll use the curve, and I'll try and do some things with the brush.

I don't like making worms with the brush tool because I don't have a certain hand when making lines on the computer, and I can't afford a tablet.

Thank you for your help _Kilburn.

The last picture is the best. But there is still much to be improved on.

28 May 2008, 15:05
I think the corners of the foot of the worm is very sharp. The shape needs definition, because it seems a bit stiff, and the crease should be done more bulgy, not just an upwards V. But otherwise, good stuff, great improvement.

McMaster
28 May 2008, 15:10
Thank you for your post .JeT.

How do you think I should make the crease? I tried to make the one in Splapp's guide.

Now that I've learnt where the curve tool is in Flash, the corners won't be sharp in my next pic.

Also what does "stiff" means? :o

Yes, I have.

Do some hand drawn ones please :)
It is my personal opinion that you can judge an artist purely by what he can do on paper.

_Kilburn
28 May 2008, 15:24
Use the curve tool, but only use it for underdrawing. Create at least 2 layers, one for the underdrawing, and one for the final drawing. Draw the approximative shape of your worm using lines and curves, preferably using a bright color (bright grey is fine). Then, take the Brush tool, switch to the second layer, and draw your final drawing. Add color and shading, and you're done. :)

Hi, McMaster, and thank you for taking my advice and returning.:)

As i said before, the shape of the worm is still off. Its a noticable improvement, but you still have some work to do, and the shape of the worm is very square, i'm afraid.

Look at splapps worms. See how they curve a lot? try and follow the exact shape.

And try and get used to the mouse. It really helps with drawing, honest.;)

I request.

Hello! I have newsies-ish news!

I made another worm in Flash, this time all by brush. No lines, no curves, nothing.

Here it is:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l279/antonism96/WormAllWithBrushTest.jpg

I don't like it much. Also the tail is a little weird...

So, if you don't mind the tail (I was in a hurry and I made it like this), how do you think I'm going with the brush?

Pyramid
28 May 2008, 19:22
The tail is too fat and the neck too thin
I would like to make a paint example but I can't right now...
Just work a lot on the forms and make it more fleshy and gely (I don't know what I'm talking about. I hate english)

Shadowmoon
28 May 2008, 19:33
Tails too fat, and neck too thin.

It looks like superblob.

also, take TIME with your pictures. No need to rush.

you seem to be good with the mouse though.

McMaster
28 May 2008, 19:34
I'll redo one tomorrow.

If I improve tomorrow, I'll start accepting requests.

Also Shadowmoon, I had to hurry because I didn't have time!

All Aperture technologies remain safely operational up to 4000 Degress Kelvin. Goodbye!

And McMaster, you did good with the brush. Looking at your paint picture, i thought it would look squiggly, but it didn't! good job!

With a decent mouse you can do amazing works on Paint

Not necessarily. If you really enjoy your job it is no longer considered work, for one thing. I have a job, and sometimes I do like it better than school, and sometimes I don't. If you make a living doing what you love, then you've done the right things.
And besides, school is kind of work anyway.

Kelster, work can be stressfull for some people. Hackerman hates work, and he says it is, and he's 8 years older than you.....

McMaster
30 May 2008, 10:04
High school is harder than primary. It is no way easier.

You're right.

High School vs Primary School:

1. In High School, we have to stay at school 7 hours compared to 6 hours at Primary School.
2. The lessons are more, different, and much more difficult.
3. We have only one teacher at each subject.
4. The homework is significantly increased.
5. You get punished much more easily than Primary School.
6. After Easter holidays, we have to write tests for all subjects until we finish the school year.
7. It's really hard to get the 20/20 mark, and it is very easy to get the 10/20 mark.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Shadowmoon
30 May 2008, 10:30
High schools in greece sound very similiar to schools in UK......

And my exams start on June 22nd. I hate exams!

we have 1 teacher for every subject too. I do think that happens in most high schools though.

Does the tail need more improvement?

Thank you Shadowmoon. Also I'm going to make a picture all with brush on MSPaint, to compare how I do with each programs.

Back to the thread (The art thread, not the pals chat thread)
Square head are not bad when you know how to make them and use it on your style, like Slick's first style...
In your case I think round heads would be much more apropriaded

The crease on the tail is not just some lines. It must look like flesh

oh hey, the art here stopped sucking so hard, apparently :p

that last one's not bad. the square head can work if you like it (IMO, anyway), but I would also suggest trying a rounded one. the pointy tail also needs to be rounded off, unless he plans to take up fencing in the near future :p

the general shape of the worm needs to be worked into more of a style specific to you, though. right now it's really generic. try out some different body types. the rest looks fine, but the shape itsself is what makes it generic. try to smooth and curve the body as a whole.

How is it?

P.S. I used the tools this time only to correct the eyes and add pupils with highlight.

It's because I used zoom to make the body. The brush was the same, but as I said, the zoom was 200%, and in 100% it looks thinner.. ;)

Firstly: Don't draw one eye and then copy-paste it. It's incredibly noticeable, especially with the variable-thickness lines you're using.

Secondly: Why do your worms have two eyebrows?

Finally: Everything else that's wrong with what you're doing.

McMaster

1) What's wrong with that? Everyone has different eyes?

Plasma
20 Jun 2008, 19:32
Because the body of the worm has an outline while everything else doesn't, because the two eyes on the worm are exactly identical, because the worm is badly shaped, because the muffin is HORRIBLY shaped, because blueberries don't have blood no matter how fun it might be to make something to bleed more red stuff than it's original bodyweight, because even the blood is horribly shaped, because the gun still looks like an umbrella, because... okay, look, I could go on for a long long time. There's a lot of reasons your art sucks, so either start trying to improve it or stop complaining.

also, that worm is a marginal improvement, but you did nothing to fix the body, and it still looks horrendous.

The gun looks like an umbrella. Why? because you got the gunfire wrong.

The new pic: Better, but the eyebrows are wrong, and it still doesn't look angry.

Also, you really need to work on the body. The body shape still looks bad.

You all need to check your eyes.

The body in my new angry eyes picture was bad because my mouse messes me up and I had to use the tools.

Mouse=semi excuse. Granted, it just takes some getting used to, but just look at all Splapp's stuff from January (I believe that's when he got his tablet?) and past.
Mouses just take a little bit of getting used to, is all.

Congratulations on finding the best way to get as many people as possible to tell you exactly that :p

Also, if you can't work with the mouse (I certainly can't), don't do it at all rather than doing it and using it as an excuse later.

Don't be an idiot, McMaster. The people who said that it looks like an umbrella were talking about the gun+what is apparently supposed to be gunfire, not just the item circled in red.
EDIT: Someone posted this before I did.
Anyway, you need an outline around the hand. And you need to add fingers, otherwise the hand looks like a blob that a weapon is sticking out of, rather than a hand holding a weapon.

Yeah, the circled gun doesn't look like an umbrella.

It looks like an umbrella handle.

Everyone talked about only the gun, not the gunfire and the blood.

Everyone who said that should have been more clear.

If the worm's hand wasn't there, it wouldn't look like an umbrella handle.

Alright. The gunfire is what makes the gun look like an umbrella, and the blood splattering looks like you just went crazy with the Paintbrush tool and drew a bunch of... scribbles.

I... I don't even know how you managed to get such a horribly wrong impression of what a line of bullets looks like!
Or how, when I said 'poking', you took it to mean 'shooting at'

If the worm's hand wasn't there, it wouldn't look like an umbrella handle.
Yes it would.

Didn't typing this sentence exert more energy than going back and slightly rewording your sentence?

Also, I hereby put forth a request to change the title of this thread to McMaster's "Art".

He never mentioned the cause, though, and yes, if you need very clear instructions to notice that your gun is actually an umbrella, I think you are a bit dense. It's the kind of thing you need to know if your life depends on it.

I could swear that you people are trying to get this thread locked. In fact, you probably are. Bah.

McMaster, you shouldn't just draw a single worm and post it here. It won't really get you anything in return except for shallow criticism and outright flames.

I mean, you should be able to criticize your own work. You should be able to look at your picture and think "okay then, what would make this better?" You don't need us to look at it. I drew a ton of worms before I actually posted my first picture, which happened to be this (http://img108.exs.cx/img108/515/TT01.jpg).
I've never posted a picture of a single boring worm with no background, as far as I know. Those are sketches, and you should be making those for no reason other than to improve yourself. If you make a lot of sketches you should get a lot better.
Right now you're sketching a single worm and posting it here and waiting for criticism, and you'll never improve at that rate.

Drawing and improving should be fun for you first and foremost. Remember that.
Posting stuff on this forum will only get you bull**** about umbrellas with absolutely NO ONE telling you what the actual problem is (You made the bullet trail look really weird with the thick orange outline. A google image search for "Pistol muzzle flash" gives this example (http://www.mjknightsmilitaryeffects.co.uk/tv%20armourer%20firing%20pistol.jpg). Bullets don't leave trails, really. The presence of a gun makes it clear that something is getting shot at. This parenthesis is way too long).

I do wish this forum could give better advice than "It's all terrible! Change everything!", but that's not really going to happen.

I could swear that you people are trying to get this thread locked. In fact, you probably are. Bah.

I do wish this forum could give better advice than "It's all terrible! Change everything!", but that's not really going to happen.that's easy to say when you've not been posting here the whole time. we HAVE tried to help. on multiple occassions. this is just from page 5:

Instead of adding two eyebrows, you should change the shape of the eye to make it look angrier.
Indeed. But I'm lazy and that was the first image I found when searching "Angry eye" into Google.
Here is a better example.
http://www.webweaver.nu/clipart/img/people/eyes/angry-eyes.gif
You made 2 sets of eyebrows to make it "show anger"

I just tried to "show anger", but instead, I tried without eyebrows at all. And on paint, I got this result.

31604

See how much the eye shape helps?

And yes, I'm aware I'm terrible, but at least mine shows anger too :p

and all of that was completely ignored or responded with intentional ignorance:
I told you that I made this example to show how I make the angry eyes!

I told everyone not to comment on the body for this picture!

P.S. I have also said in two posts (including the one with the picture) that my mouse messes me up. Wait to get better art until I get a good mouse.
You have already posted that.

Also if the tools are crap, then I'm right I blame them!

I wasn't happy with the body, not with the eyes, because I was expecting comments on the eyes.

there's no point in trying to help if someone refuses to listen.
