The background doesn't matter much right now anyway- the worms do.

Pigbuster told me to add backgrounds, not plain worm sketches. ;)

Edit: Also comments on the worm?

The shading could do better. I'd give an example but I'm a rather lazy bast.

Give it now. (before I edit the picshure to edit and the shading too)

Well, fine.

Shading should be like this.

Worms are Organic, they have organic features and shading. They're not boxes. Even though the back light looks completely wrong on my picture, pardon my crappyness. Mouse, no tablet, extremely rushed.

OK, I'll try it another time.

I made it like this because I followed Splapp's tutorial.

That's also a quite old tutorial. He's gotten way better at shading.

I'm glad your reacting better to criticism now, McMaster.

Keep it up. Its what you need to do.

McMaster
13 Jul 2008, 22:30
Also I need some comments on the shape of the worm.

Is it better or worse than my previous pictures?

Shadowmoon
13 Jul 2008, 22:33
You are improving slowly, and i thought that pic was better than your past ones.

McMaster

You are improving slowly, and i thought that pic was better than your past ones.

So improving slowly is really bad, and you thought it would be better than my past ones?

Shadowmoon
13 Jul 2008, 22:46
No. What i mean is that you are starting to improve now. Thats good, not bad.

And that picture was better than your other pics.

McMaster

No. What i mean is that you are starting to improve now. Thats good, not bad.

Oh, I messed up with your previous post. :o

That one is clearer, thank you. :)

Shadowmoon
13 Jul 2008, 22:51
Also, when i said "thats good" i didn't mean the picture was good. I meant that the fact your starting to improve is good.

the shape of the worm is actually reasonably good. the shape of the hat is decent enough to pass.

the shading, as stated, needs work, but the example given already was exactly what needs to be done. aside from that I think the sun thing is the only issue.

McMaster
14 Jul 2008, 11:43
I'm going to edit the picture right now.

I'll fix the sun problem and I'll try to make the shading like .JeT's example.

Edit: I edited the picture. I added the cloud in front of the sun, and made the shading backlight. I didn't add all those details on the shading, because I couldn't make them good.

Doesn't matter, I quite like it now!

The shading is ok, the sun is ok.. The shape of the worm doesn't imply much detail, so the shade and backlight should be simple..

Nevermind, in other words: You executed it fine... I'm just babbling.

McMaster
14 Jul 2008, 13:21
Also I got puzzled with the shading and ruined the mouth a bit... :( If you zoom, you can see it is bad.

What details should the worm imply?

What details should the worm imply?I can see the mouth problems un-zoomed and it's not all that bad, really. the shading is much better! I think it's a tad too far into the worm, but not enough to base a serious complaint.

nice work on that part!

Also, that pic was much better.

You don't know how to do shading?

I figured it out. It's pretty much like MSPaint.

If I could record, I would make a guide.

Shadowmoon
14 Jul 2008, 17:42
Do you just make the part you want to shade, and colour that part?

Akuryou13
14 Jul 2008, 17:48
just look up shading tutorials, shadow.

mcmaster's technique is about as basic as shading gets. it shouldn't be hard to find someone who's already recorded a step-by-step.

McMaster
14 Jul 2008, 17:59
Do you just make the part you want to shade, and colour that part?

Yup.

I coloured with various colours the parts I want to shade, and I made lighter and darker versions of the worm's colour and added it to the right area.

It's easy. ;)

I have one thing to announce.

I will stop doing art for a while. That's it.

Until I start doing art again, I accept requests.

I've got two requests to do.

1. Shadowmoon
2. super_frea

I'll do the request Shadowmoon did at the start of the thread (he didn't know that I didn't accept requests that time) and I've decided to do SF's request. (Paul.Power example (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=656695&postcount=141))

An optical mouse will arrive to my house soon, so I will start to do art again.

For now, here's the last edit of my previous pictures, with better shading without mouth problems and cloud shadows, and I call it "McMaster on Sunset":

http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/5299/mcmasteronsunsetbf3.jpg

This time I made it using DirectX 12 and OpenGL 5.0, with SOTAG (State-Of-The-Art Graphics), a program which can combine many powerful rendering engines, including CryEngine 5 and the next-generation Source engine. The icing on the cake is the effects which are made from a studio which provided special effects on many famous movies, and the cherry is Advanced Shading Techniques.

Enjoy!

Is his hat hovering behind him? Because it certainly isn't on his head.

In fact, if the eyebrows are casting a shadow but the hat isn't, it's probably some massive, ornate and goofy looking tower that's really far off in the background.

Whoops! I didn't set the AST to do that! Thanks for pointing this out!

I'm done with this picture. I've edited it two times to get that result. The next picture is when I get an optical mouse.

Maybe if I use 1998 techniques my pictures will look better? :p

actually, it's not even that. even the clouds are projecting really tiny shadows onto the ground that make absolutely no sense. so even if it WAS a tower it would have a shadow as if it were a hat.

Not a problem if it's BEHIND the sun. Someone make the calculations for the height.

actually, it's not even that. even the clouds are projecting really tiny shadows onto the ground that make absolutely no sense. so even if it WAS a tower it would have a shadow as if it were a hat.Maybe it's a really, really big worm, to the same scale as the clouds. Then the small cloud shadows and the goofy-looking tower make sense.

Maybe it's a really, really big worm, to the same scale as the clouds. Then the small cloud shadows and the goofy-looking tower make sense.yeah but then you've got the problem that the sun is below the cloud and yet the shadow is cast on the ground that's also below the sun :p
